One scorned boy. His enemy’s straight father. Is it revenge or could this be true love? KADENCEI knew fooling around with Logan McKenna in secret was a bad idea. But nothing could have prepared me for when he decides we’re through and humiliates me in front of the entire college. I’m both patient and petty, though, so when the perfect opportunity for revenge presents itself, I strike. His rich and successful father might think he’s straight, but my inner doll, Kiki, is too beautiful even for him to resist. I’m going to seduce him, then expose him, just like his son did to me. RAFFERTYTechnically, I’m still married, yes. However, that bitter saga is long over and now it’s all for show. Pretty young things often throw themselves at me and I’m happy to enjoy them. There are some obvious differences with bratty Kadence compared to the usual girls. However, the way he’s determined to service me and call me Daddy is alluring, so I decide I can play with him when he’s his alter ego, Kiki. Except this boy creeps his way into every corner of my life and soon I’m addicted. But this could never be anything lasting or real. We both know it’s all a game, right?Make Believe is a steamy, standalone MM romance. It’s the sixth book in the Paddle Creek Daddies series, where it’s always the quiet ones who get up to the best kind of trouble. This book features dollification, very naughty conference calls, hidden wounds and unexpected comfort, gorgeous dresses, and a guaranteed HEA with absolutely no cliffhanger.

TLDR; RAFFERTY MCKENNA IS 🤌🏻🙌🏻

- enemy’s dad
- daddy kink
- dollification
- queer awakening

CW: consensual sharing, cheating but not between MCs (for clarification Rafferty AND his wife have other partners and are both aware, but she refuses to allow a divorce because of appearances)

After a run in with his former fuck buddy at a party leaves him humiliated, Kadence is out for revenge. What better way to get back at him than to fuck his dad?

Kadence sees Rafferty at a kink party and comes up with the plan to seduce him with his doll persona Kiki, take some photos, and ruin the entire family all to get back at Logan. & while I love a revenge plot, and absolutely agree that Logan deserves to be taken down a peg because he’s a giant asshole, the plan was a bit extreme 🤣

Thankfully it gets shot to hell after Kadence agrees to doing a long term arrangement with Rafferty, realizes that he is nothing like his awful son, and falls for him. All good things must come to an end though, and when their little kink bubble imploded… God was it a fucking doozy, but Rafferty was 🤌🏻🤌🏻

He was genuinely such a wonderful character and Daddy/Dom, and despite not knowing Kadence for very long was willing to throw down for his doll when it came to his shit for brains son. Even outside of that, when they were in a scene or at a party, Rafferty never took things too far, and always made sure to take care of Kadence after. Plus he genuinely wanted Kadence as himself too, and did his best to show him what he truly deserved as a man and a doll.

Sure things may have started out disingenuously, but I ended up finding their story to be equally as sweet as it was steamy, and really enjoyed their dynamic—which was hella surprising because dollification is not something I’ve read before, and wasn’t sure I would enjoy, but the power exchange of it all was very intriguing.

Dollification is a newer one to me. I've read it in another context before, usually less consensual, so this was refreshing and I found I enjoyed it this way around. Kiki is a very pretty and sweet doll who just wants to behave for Daddy.
The initial plan Kadence has was to ruin Rafferty and, by extension, his son Logan, who had hurt him. Very quickly, that plan is pushed aside because of the connection the pair share, though Kadence does struggle with the guilt of even planning it.
Plenty of steamy moments, including a scene where Kiki is shared with others. I liked this, and it made sense for where they were at in their relationship.
Rafferty, despite having an awakening fairly late on in life, is open to new things and communicates pretty well with Kadence.
Though it is part of Paddle Creek, Make Believe can be read as a standalone.

HJ Welch is a one-click read for me at the best of times, but add in enemy's father, dollification and a chance for Rafferty to not only have a bisexual awakening but also a chance to take stock of his life and find a new direction. I love the way these characters go all in for what they want.

This book is equal parts snarky, sweet, spicy and downright naughty and explores a kink that I rarely find written about - dollification... especially when it's directed by the doll himself... so well done! I also love that while this book focuses on that kink, the couple move beyond it and explore other facets of their relationship.

While this book could be read standalone, you will really get the impact of the book if you read the previous stories and reading them in order gives you great world building.

Note to self….this book was not for me.

Dollification, I did not know that was a thing. Not my kink but I felt the need to power through.

No stars given because if this is your kink, have at it. Not my kink.

I really need to step away from some social media groups, or be more discerning at the books I decide to read. This was awful.

Also, because I just noticed the book cover - who is the cover model supposed to be? He’s not a 50 year old man and he’s not a 20 year old man who likes to pretend to be a Dolly. Have I read the wrong book? Just checked the blurb and confirmed that is the right cover. That does not look like Kadence aka Kiki or Rafferty.

I’ve read all the Paddle creeks books and this was another sweet addition to the series. I admit it’s my least favourite but NOT because of the writing itself, more because of the kink itself.
I read about all sort of kinks and love to explore the topic through fiction and discover new things I knew nothing about. Well now I know dollification is not for me. I still wanted to give it a try but I think it’s because I prefer vocal sex scenes and, even though I love the idea of people letting go with their subspace choice I don’t really get the appeal for partner when the other person doesn’t move or respond. To each their own of course, and I’d never kink shame. It’s just not for me so I had a harder time connecting with the sexy scenes like I usually do.

But I did love:
- Kadence. He made me laugh in the previous book and I was curious to get to know him and Kiki more! He’s certainly an interesting MC even if I don’t get his kink. He’s kind hearted and I loved that he had some bite.

- Even though we guess what the drama will be from the beginning, I loved how it was resolved. No spoiler but I’m glad Rafferty reacted like he did.

- Speaking of Rafferty it was an interesting book because we finally get to meet the man who’s been described as an as**ole during the whole series because of what’s he doing to the town (and the guy who raised the bully from the previous books as well)

- seeing or hearing about past MC. It always keeps the city alive in my head to see the other guys pop out here and there. Here we mostly had Jessie and Harper.

- I was afraid we wouldn’t get one appearance from Clayton the raccoon but no he just made us wait until the very end ;)

I wish there was a bonus scene or something where we got to see Kiki in the gorgeous dress again because it was such a shame to have such a beautiful outfit/make up spoiled like that!

Some CW that may interest readers:

Rafferty is married (not a loving relationship and kind of open mariage)
And there’s a sharing scene at a club.

I wonder if this is the end of Paddle creek since there was no new MC introduced in this one. Maybe one where Logan finally gets therapy and heal himself and his internalised homophobia? 🤔

Anyway if you’re new to this series, I recommend it! No need to read them all or in order to appreciate one. My personal favourite are Heavent Sent and Four play because no one does polyamory like HJ/Helen!

I was gifted my copy of this book direct from the author.

So, I love Ms Welch, you know I do but she keeps throwing my for a loop!

I never even figured that being a doll was someone's kink, the thought never occured to me and I wasn't sure if I was going to fully engage with this book, simply because it was something new to me. But I jumped in, with an open mind and told myself to give it a go.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd in true Welch fashion, she blew me away!

Kadence vows to get revenge on Logan McKenna and when Logan's father catches Kadence's eye at a party, he knows just how to do it. Kiki, Kadence's doll persona, will play with Rafferty, get pictures and bring them both down and hard. However, rafferty is nothing like his dirtbag son, and Kadence struggles to keep his feelings out of the equation.

Like I said, new to me kink. And I bloody loved it.

I loved that Rafferty wasn't at all bothered that Kiki was not female, but male. He took it in his stride, and enjoyed both KiKi and Kadence, in both personas. I loved that both men found it difficult to keep their emotions out, cos this was just a fling, right? Yeah, right!

But other than the scorching smexy times in this book, there is deep emotion, even they try to keep it out! Kadence never had anyone take care of him, or KiKi like Rafferty does. Rafferty, in turn, never felt the need to care so much about what his doll and his boy needs, right down to taking KiKi's make up off, ready for bed. I loved how Rafferty SAW that Kadence needed that.

It takes place over a short space of time, only a week or two, but these sorts of relationships tend to be very intense, and very quick moving. Sometimes, I find them too fast, but I think for Kadence and Rafferty, this was perfect.

And!

Rafferty's reaction to finding out that all this started as a way to get revenge?? Absolutely amazing and so not what I was expecting! I'm not going to tell you what happened, for spoilers but get your tissues ready! I blubbed!!

I thought that this was the last Paddle Creek Daddies book and I was sad to see it end, but its not and that makes me so happy!

But this was the best one yet!

5 full and shiny stars!

Paddle Creek never disappoints, and Kadence and Rafferty's story was another engaging romance with unique kinks. Kadence was quite a prickly little brat when he met Rafferty, but it came from being abandoned by the people who were supposed to love and cherish him. His initial seduction of Rafferty was meant to be revenge for his son's bad behavior, but once their chemistry sparked to life everything changed. Rafferty was exactly the kind of dominant man Kadence was looking for, stern and commanding but worshipful of his perfect doll Kiki. He paid attention, cared for Kadence, and their sexual chemistry was insanely good. I thought I was going to melt into a shivery little puddle every time Daddy took Kiki out to play, and their caretaking extended far beyond getting each other off and into something much more intimate. I could feel the scars on Kadence's heart healing with each tender moment and quiet bonding he shared with Rafferty, and it was wonderful to see him blossom under the attention and praise. The revenge scheme was more of an afterthought than anything else, and Kadence never took any steps to enact his plan, so there was nothing icky about their love journey as far as I'm concerned. I knew that Rafferty's family would be the biggest hurdle for them to overcome, but despite a terrible misunderstanding Kadence and Rafferty sailed right though it with only a moderate amount of angst that was quickly set to right with a heartfelt conversation.

Kadence wasn't afraid to challenge Rafferty about his business practices, and I do think it gave him a wake up call he sorely needed. Their scenes went to incredibly kinky places, but Kiki and Rafferty were at the center of them all and I could feel the intense love they shared. Rafferty was looking for someone authentic and real that let him express his dominance, and he got that. Kadence was looking for someone to pamper and cherish him who wouldn't walk away at the first sign that a relationship wouldn't be easy, and he got that. I loved their sweet epilogue, seeing them both engaged in the town life and living as their happiest selves together.

When Kadence is humiliated at a party by Logan, his closeted hookup, he vows revenge, and finds his chance when he sees Rafferty, Logan’s dad, at a private party. Here is the perfect opportunity as he basically seduces Rafferty. When getting together again is proposed, Kadence jumps at the chance when it is for an entire weekend. His plan seems set into action, but Rafferty wants longer, he treats Kiki with care and respect, and the revenge idea loses its charm. As feelings start to grow on both sides, possibilities abound until a confrontation and rude awakening bring things to a halt. Is everything lost now, or can the relationship be salvaged, and is that what both want?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and especially the character of Kadence/Kiki. The Kiki kink persona was one I hadn’t read before, that of a living doll, all dressed up, ready to be used in whatever way his “Daddy” desired, showing little emotion, moving as he was placed, and being silent no matter what. Apparently, “pillow princess” is another name for what he does in his kink. The care put into presenting himself as the living doll went way beyond a “normal” getting ready for a “date”, and I found the whole process fascinating. Kiki had this confident, very self-assured, put together aura, totally different from Kadence, who was strong but also feeling unloved and needing validation from those he was with.

I also appreciated the way Rafferty was able to connect and interact meaningfully with both Kadence/Kiki personalities/personas, caring for him and always seeming to intuitively know when he needed something or something was on his mind, acknowledging that he was listening and heard what Kadence had to say, and took him seriously. I liked the way Rafferty seemed to accept his attraction to Kiki, aware enough of himself to not really question what he was feeling, knowing what he wanted and willing to fight for it when KK would have given up. I would have enjoyed much more time with them together as a couple and to learn more about what was happening in Paddle Creek.

A very enjoyable read, kept me involved and left me wanting more.

I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.

I’ve loved all the Paddle Creek Daddies books, the series has such well done characters and this author writes top notch steam. I mean , it’s very good. This story, I loved that it felt a little different. It’s starts a touch dark, as a quest for revenge. Kadence has Rafferty in his sights, setting out to seduce his enemy Logan’s straight father. I thought it was an original and intense premise. It’s shifts pretty early in their relationship, as Kadence starts to see how different Rafferty is from his son. I loved it when the feelings set in, because it’s almost more tense. How could it possibly work out for these two, especially once Rafferty’s son finds out? Logan is always a cloud hanging over their relationship, which added some good tension. It of course does come to a head for the three of them, and in a most inopportune moment. And, let me say, I flipping loved the surprising way it went down! Perfection. The dollification was well explored and unique. It seems a pretty original kink and Kiki and Rafferty have the perfect mix of steam and genuine emotion in their story. Great read!

I absolutely loved this book! Kadence and Rafferty’s story is a thrilling journey that you won't want to miss. Initially driven by a desire for revenge against Logan, who hurt and humiliated him, Kadence sets his sights on Rafferty, Logan’s father. However, as Kadence and Rafferty grow closer, his elaborate plan to ruin the family begins to unravel.

For Rafferty, this relationship is a new and unexpected experience, but he embraces it wholeheartedly. As their feelings deepen, they face challenges that temporarily hinder their ability to express their true emotions. Despite these obstacles, the story culminates in a heartwarming conclusion where Rafferty confesses his love and intentions to Kadence.

In the end, Rafferty's heartfelt declaration leads to a mutual understanding that they both desire a future together. This book beautifully captures the evolution of their relationship, from revenge-driven beginnings to a deeply felt, lasting love. It's a wild ride filled with emotional highs and lows, ultimately delivering a satisfying and forever kind of love that Kadence and Rafferty both long for.

“You want to tarnish my reputation? I’ll destroy yours, pretty boy. Just you wait.”

I really enjoyed this book. I was fascinated by the premise of this story. And tense over the inevitable drama and hurt that would happen when the truth comes out after the main couple start having feelings. Though I hated Logan enough for what he did that was so cowardly and hurtful that I wanted Kadence to get him back, I also don't want Rafferty to be hurt from it, as well as them both to be happy by the end. The living doll kink/Kiki persona is a new one to me and I found it very interesting. I really liked Rafferty and the relationship that develops between him and Kadence.

'Where did this perfect young man come from? It’s like someone created him especially for me when I didn’t even know what I wanted, what I needed. He excites me in ways I never could have imagined, but he also pushes me to challenge myself. Thanks to him, I’m thinking outside the box in so many areas of my life, not just my sexuality.
He makes me understand the possibilities are endless.'

So many things in this book grabbed me right from the start. First, I was all in for Kadence getting back at Logan, but the fact that his revenge plan involved a third party made me uncomfortable. However, the fact that this third party was Logan's father made things more acceptable as I assumed I knew what kind of jerk it would take to raise a bully like Logan. That's the genius of HJ Welch. What we actually find when we meet Rafferty is not at all the man I expected. He's dealing with a ton of baggage and has been for years so Kadence/Kiki comes into his life and things take an unexpected emotional turn for both of them. I couldn't wait to see what would happen when the truth inevitably came out and Welch gave me everything I could have wanted for the book's conclusion. A superb ending to this series and my favorite of the six books.

If kink is not your thing then scoot on by, but if kink is your thing then for sure grab this right up. Kadence/Kiki is into dollification and what starts as a secret revenge plot turns into something completely different and Rafferty and Kadence explore and grow together. I really liked how the kink was presented and explained in the book in that it felt really natural - Kiki explained his boundaries to Rafferty in the context of meeting as strangers and then again when they met up again for more. Because of the initial
hook-up premise the book gets spicy real real fast but in the best of ways. Ultimately, things come to a head as expected, but since there’s been enough personal growth in the interim it’s overall handled well by Rafferty. All the spice and kink WITH character development to boot.

Kadence and Rafferty story was intense, hot, and with a side of forbidden. It had secrets, deception, betrayal and hurt.
They clicked beautifully, they were passionate and possessive, they discover new sides and things about themselves, and also they discover happiness together.
I liked Rafferty attitude and actions when truth comes to light, how he fights for Kadence, and how reassuring is when comforting him and revealing his true feelings.
I liked their chemistry and how they complete each other, how they learn to communicate and trust in each other, but most of all I loved the way Rafferty believes in Kadence and is positive he knows his soul.
I enjoyed the read and I'm looking forward to see what happens next.

I loved this book!

This book is amazing! Kadence and Rafferty’s story is one wild ride and an absolute must read! A plan to get revenge on Logan, who hurt and humiliated Kadence, will lead Kadence to Rafferty, Logan’s dad. His elaborate plan to ruin the family will slowly fade away as he and Rafferty get closer. It’s a new experience for Rafferty but one he embraces whole heartedly. Feelings develop but there will be a bump in the road before they get the chance to express them. All is well in the end when Rafferty gets the chance to tell Kadence just how he feels and what he wants. And it’s the forever that Kadence wants too.

I read an ARC copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

Kadence wanted revenge on Logan. So he decides to get it by doing something awful to Logan's father. Only once he spends time with and gets to know Logan's father, Rafferty, does he come to realize that Rafferty is not like his son. What starts out as consenting adults exploring kinks that line up turns into more. But then there is that secret, the motive behind Kadence getting with Rafferty has to be dealt with before they can decide that they want to be together forever. And they do. I enjoyed their story, bumps and all and the things that both Kadence and Rafferty had to work through to get to where they both really want to be.

Kadence was hurt by the hate and homophobia of his ex Logan. His chance for revenge happens when he seduces Logan's Dad Rafferty. But the seduction and revenge crumbles when his feelings become love for the man who totally gets him and his love of dollification. This book is so hot and full of steamy scenes when Kadence and Rafferty fall under each other's spell. Rafferty is definitely cheating on a faithless wife and Kadence has unpure motives but you want them together anyway. Their indulgence becomes a need and you can't stop reading this. I received a copy of this book through Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.

I think HJ is one of the top mm Daddy trope authors out there and this book is another excellent read. Based on Daddy kink but with Dollification which I really find interesting as a reader but don't see many books with it made a great change. I really liked following Kadence as himself and as his alter ego Kiki and felt for him and his struggle with guilt as his plan to ruin Rafferty and his son Logan soon goes awry as his feelings grow. So much chemistry and steamy scenes between Kiki and Rafferty it certainly kept me hooked!

I've been waiting for this story!!!

This whole series is a lot of fun, and its neat to recognize characters from the previous books, but it totally works as a stand alone as well! I love Kadence, and his get revenge by sleeping with my terrible exe's dad is so hilarious, and totally him!

Now, this explores doll kink, which I had not even heard about before, and it's definitely not my favorite, but I liked learning about the kink, and it was done very respectfully- daddy Raff is a consent king! I don't know if I'd want to read another doll kink romance, but if H.J. Welch writes it, I'd probably give it another shot!

Overall, I really enjoyed this gay contemporary romance!

This was the best book of the series and my favorite HJ Welch book so far. I loved absolutely EVERYTHING about this book. Especially the way Rafferty stood up to his son and defended Kadence when he found him there. I would love to have an extra chapter or two with more sharing because that was beyond 🔥. This was also one of the best dollification books I've ever read and I loved how Rafferty just seemed so confident and accepting even though this was a new to him. This book just has a lot of my favorites in it. Ex's father, bi-awakening, dollification, consensual sharing. I would have given it more stars if possible.

Good things can come from bad

I read different things depending on my mood and honestly I wasn’t really in the mood for a Daddy/boy story but I had gotten an advanced reading copy and knew I would have to leave a review. I should have known better because I was hooked by the time I was one chapter in, as I am with most of HJ Welch’s stories. Her strength is really in her ability to make her characters interesting and feel like they could be real. Kadence and Rafferty click and even though their relationship starts out with bad intentions on Kadence’s part you can feel the way they mesh with each other. Another great Paddle Creek Daddies story.

I have never heard of a doll kink before and this story had me fascinated! I love that these stories introduce me to things I had never heard of but with not with a salacious intent. Kadence is a beautiful doll who is looking for the right Daddy to appreciate and love him. When he cuts off things with his closeted sometimes lover he retaliates by humiliating him in front of a large crowd. When he meets Rafferty, the father of his ex, at a kink party he decides he will use him to get revenge against the entire family. But how strong is his willpower when he discovers that Rafferty is the Daddy he has been dreaming of all along

'Make Believe' was sweet, with a little bit of angst and a lot of spice. There were touches of 'Pretty Woman' in the mix where Rafferty contemplated his business strategies. I'm not sure Dollification (sp?) is my thing - I can't imagine just laying there and not being a participant in anything sexual. However, I know the sexual aspect isn't the only thing to that kink.
Kadence and Rafferty had a slightly bumpy start, and I expected more resistance from Rafferty's ex, but overall, I highly recommend this novel for your summer vacation reading!

really good

Really good book, I quite enjoyed both MC’s and the doll kink is totally different, I’ve only read one other book with this particular kink. Now, I will admit I only have it 4stars cause I found Rafferty seemed to change his mind about Kadence all of a sudden. All of his inner thoughts before their last party was about it ending and there was no way he could see a future with him. Plus I’m not one for sharing so that was a bummer to read but it wasn’t overly detailed or long so I could deal.

Rafferty and Kadence ❤️

4.5 Stars ⭐️

First of all, kudos to HJ Welch and the ability to slay the Daddy Dom/ Kink genre. Without giving to much away because this is an absolute must read for fan of this series, let's just say this book was so deliciously naughty I ate it up like a starving man!! It was sweet, snarky and spicy AF, not to mention dollification....a new to me trope, but I enjoyed the hell out of it!!! For a kinky good time, this is a ✅.

Never again

I read book one and I hated it and it's been like half a year and I saw somebody say that this book was really good so I came to read it. I was not enjoying the book, but I wanted to get to the ending because I was invested in the plot. That was a bad decision because that was the most unsatisfying ending i have ever read. I'm so upset. I just wasted so much time finishing a book that i didn't even want to read just because I wanted to know what happened at the end. I want to cry
