I haven't been reviewing these because it's hard for me to review an ongoing series unless something impactful happens in the plot. This time it did! I don't consider this a spoiler, so I'm not going to hide it, I'm just elaborating on a pep talk and clarifying its symbolism.

Optimus Prime has given up the Prime title to Rodimus. He goes up against Nova Prime who has complete control of the Dead Universe. Nova Prime starts to beat the crap out of Orion to a point where Orion is on his hands and knees and can't go on. Along with the physical beating, Nova batters Orion with unfortunate words of truth, "The Cybertronian race stands above all others and you and me as Primes have a duty to shape that destiny." He goes on to say that the Prime lineage is corrupted and being a Prime stands for that.

Rodimus then bends to Orion's side and says this, "...I never wanted to be Rodimus Prime...Deep down I always wanted to be you. The real you--not Orion Pax...When you became Optimus Prime...the world didn't know the truth about Nova...and the rest. Back then, being a Prime meant embodying decency and integrity and morality and all the sorts of things that chancers like me pretend are unfashionable because deep down they scare us because we try to live our lives by them but we can't. But guess what? You can and you do every day. Thanks to you the word 'Prime' still means decency, integrity, and morality...The world always needs a Prime, but only if that Prime is you."

I'm not going to spoil the come back to this speech because it is epic and something to witness on the page. That speech was simple, but it just about brought a tear to my eye. Ever since Rodimus (or Hot Rod) was introduced to the series in the original Transformers movie, he's always said that he could never live up to Optimus Prime's excellence in leadership in some way or another and demonstrated this hesitation at several moments along the way. For years, fans of Transformers have looked up to and adored the character of Optimus Prime as a role model (even father-figure in some cases), but have never really felt that we could match up to his greatness. But what Rodimus said to Optimus in this issue reflects that situation. Rodimus symbolizes us--the fans--bending down to the side of our hero and reminding him (and ourselves) why he's our hero.

We all want to be Optimus Prime, but its never easy to take the place of leader and accept our responsibilities. That's why the legacy of Dennis O Neil, Peter Cullen, and many others will last forever. We can face our choices, look up, and remember the leader we grew up with.
