Naoko Takeuchi (武内直子) born March 15, 1967, a manga artist (mangaka), lives in Tokyo, Japan. Takeuchi's works have a wide following among anime/manga fans. She has become a well-known mangaka worldwide. Her most popular work, Sailor Moon, rose to become one of the most recognized manga/anime figures to date.

I have a love/hate relationship with Chibi-Usa. I find her annoying 95% of the time and this volume made me remember that.

Meh. A really weak volume story-wise. Was it necessary for future volumes? I don't know. Maybe? Which doesn't change the fact that I didn't care, most of the time. And I could sum up the story here with one picture:

Volume 3 of Sailor Moon picks up right where Volume 2 left off, with a strange girl pointing a gun at Usagi's head and demanding she fork over the Mystical Silver Crystal.

If you didn't enjoy Sailor Moon's first story arc I think you'll like this one even less. Our villains this time around... I can't think of any other way of putting it other than that they're aliens. The focus on crop circles, new magic, time travel, and alien invasions, it was just a bit too much for me and had me feeling like I was watching a really bad episode of The X-Files. As for the characters, while I appreciated that each of the first few chapters chose a different Sailor Scout to focus on, I still don't feel we got any real depth into their characters. Usagi was particularly annoying in this volume, especially her getting jealous over Chibi-Usa. Chibi-Usa was never a favourite character of mine, and I don't feel she was improved with this reread. I really hope this arc wraps up in the next volume because it's probably my least favourite.

So I love rereading this manga because it's full of surprises, like the new character who doesn't honestly seem to have any purpose beyond being a love interest for Jupiter (which is good enough for me!) I don't remember him from literally any other adaptation and I enjoyed reading about him. I also just love it whenever we get stories that focus more on the scouts/character building.

The main plot though...gosh it's rough. I see the outline of what this could've been. It's weird seeing how much aliens/paranormal activity/science is involved in the themes of this arc, since we've got the Saturn arc next, and also since I always remembered this arc as a very pretty melodrama.

A very annoying melodrama. I mean, everyone has already said it. It's weird that Usagi is so threatened by her old child. I guess you could say that she's still a child herself, and she's not used to having to share Mamoru's attention, and is spoiled and acting accordingly.
And she acknowledges MANY times that it's weird for her to feel this way. Maybe if the author had more time and wasn't trying so hard to push this shit out for season 2 of the manga.

And we haven't even gotten to the weird chibi-usa wants to bang her dad part.
Chibi-usa as a character has always had mad Scrappy Doo energy. Maybe if she'd had a better introduction, but she's really infuriating in this one. She's rude, she keeps wandering the fuck off and making more problems for everyone, and for some reason she can't figure out that her mom is her mom. I think when I was younger I found the fact that's she's 900 a really interesting bit of character work. I remember thinking her backstory was better in the manga. On some level it explains why she's so angry and desperate, but it also makes literally everything else less excusable.

Usagi had not even 14 years before she was expected to grow up and save everyone and be an adult. Chibi-usa is 900 and everyone keeps scolding Usagi for being less emotionally mature? No shit. Chibi-usa is older than literally everyone else there. Maybe she hasn't gotten a bigger body but that should mean something.

Honestly, everyone here is shockingly stupid. Usagi sees her own damn self who is functionally identical to her current self and goes, "who dis" (and it's not like anyone corrects her--they're all really dumb on this). I always kind of gave the story a pass on people not recognising their faces as part of the magic with the transformation, but this just doesn't make a lick of sense.
And I feel better having ranted all this out. Still love the artwork, and I know this is pretty much the lowest point (at least for me) so I'm happy to have gone through it, found some pleasant surprises, but overall be moving on.

So, this volume had the best and the worst so far of Sailor Moon.
The best-
"I am she who governs the door of time and space. The keeper of the underworld. I am Sailor Pluto!"

The worst- Usagi being jealous of Chibi Usa. It's bad enough when she's just a random child, but even when it's discovered she is Usagi's child Usagi is super jealous. It's downright creepy and honestly tanked my enjoyment of those chapters.

I am enjoying the overall plot with the baddies, and the naming system is fun too. I also enjoy the whole negative energy and tenth planet discussion, as it has some basis in science. If Usagi would get over this thing with Chibi Usa, we're golden.

Mój zachwyt mangą Sailor Moon trwa, ma się bardzo dobrze i nic nie wskazuje na to, że kiedykolwiek się on wyczerpie. Na ten moment kolejne tomy cyklu są jedynymi książkami, które czytam od razu po premierze, jak tylko odbiorę je z paczkomatu.

Trzeci tom wprowadza nam do historii postać Chibiusy, która jest absolutnie urocza. Poznaliśmy już na samym końcu drugiego tomu, kiedy to weszła w tę historię w iście bombowym stylu. Tutaj dowiadujemy się o niej więcej, poznajemy jej historię i rodzinę. Oczywiście, dla miłośników anime oraz mangi sprzed lat nie będzie tu żadnych zaskoczeń, ale cała reszta może naprawdę pysznie się bawić.

Zakończenie ponownie jest takie, że kontynuacja potrzebna na wczoraj, a na tę niestety przyjdzie nam poczekać do jesieni. Ja już totalnie nie mogę się doczekać, kocham tę historię pomimo jej głupotek i mega irytującej głównej bohaterki. Ta manga to mój "kocyk", który zawsze mnie relaksuje i wprowadza w dobry nastrój.

Niezmiennie polecam!

I don't know. I thought the overall story was interesting, and I definitely want to continue and find out how everything resolves. But the whole Chibiusa thing started out annoying and got creepy real fast. I had a hard time with Usagi's jealousy over her and the accusations she made. Even after we found out who she really is. It's all the ick. I just saw someone's review that made it sound like it gets worse next book. Just, why?

I spent a whole summer in high school rewatching the entire English series and it was epic.

Please forgive the rant, but I have no other choice but to. This manga was a roller coaster ride of useless emotions and glory hogging at its worst. First lets start with what this manga ALWAYS talk about (right before the s*** hits the fan that is) Usagi's whirl wind relationship with Mamoru. Mamo-chan has repeatedily stated to Usagi that he loves her time and time again and she gets jealous of a child?! Which is revealed to be her DAUGHTER from the future. And after that revalation she's still jealous of her future mini me?! WTF!! I don't believe this!! Secondly, why are these mangas so far only concentrating on Sailor Moon and Mamo-chan? I understand that she is the manga's name sake but what about the other sailor guardians? Don't they deserve some development? Some page time, love interests too? If your not going to develop them, why have them in the story line along with Sailor Moon in the first place? I was thinking just a while ago that Sailor Moon and the other sailor guardians remind me of a band where one musician is seen as more important than the others. It's a miracle they haven't disbanded yet.

Another great installment in this nostalgic trip. My least favorite character, Chibi Moon, has appeared and in this volume, we get a glimpse of the future and understand why Chibi shows up. I tried not to think too hard about the logistics, because time travel is involved and even detailed sci-fi novels have a hard time pulling that off without leaving a lot of questions. What I'm saying is, don't question the rules of the Sailor Moon universe because you won't get answers. There's also the history of what happened to the Moon Kingdom of the future and that was fun, because I've forgotten most of the plot. As usual, the villians are cheesy, the powers of the scouts are nebulous - new attacks and gadgets just seemingly appear and I guess I'll never understand what their powers really are or where they come from - and Usagi is still adorably whiny and pathetic (and uncomfortably 14). We also get to meet Pluto, one of my favorite scouts!

I love having these big, beautiful, glossy editions and I'm really enjoying my reread of this manga series.

Weiter gehts mit dem Kampf gegen die finsteren Mächte. Usagi stellt sich gemeinsam mit Mamoru und ihren Freundinnen der neuen Bedrohung und versucht das Rätsel rund um die kleine Chibiusa zu lösen. Wer ist das Kind, das ihr so sehr ähnelt und doch so viele Geheimnisse zu haben scheint?

Es war wieder einfach nur toll in die Welt der Sailor Kriegerinnen eintauchen zu können und die Nostalgie von früher zu fühlen. Wer den Anime kennt, weiß genau was ich meine. Sailor Moon und die anderen Sailor Kriegerinnen müssen sich einem starken Gegner stellen. Der Kampf scheint ausweglos und vergeblich. Ich merke auch hier wieder, dass ich mich an vieles aus dem Anime erinnern kann und viele meiner liebsten Szenen bestaunen konnte.

Der Zeichenstil Naoko Takeuchis, die Liebe zum Detail und die wunderschöne glitzernde Hülle des Mangas sind nicht nur für Fans vom Anime ein Hingucker.

Auch dieser Band endet mit einem fiesen Cliffhanger und ich kann Band 4 der Reihe wirklich kaum erwarten 😍 (Sailor Jupiter wird drauf sein ahhh🧡).

I really enjoyed the third volume of the Eternal Edition. It has a great balance of regular earth-based adventures as well as an over-arching narratives that plumbs the depths of the galaxy (not the mention time itself). There's also a bit more character development than there has been since the first volume, I'd say.

One thing I have noticed about the storytelling style in Sailor Moon is that it seems sort of impressionistic in nature. That is to say, sometimes there are abrupt jumps from one scene to another, and everything has a bit of a dreamlike quality to it. It's not that things are underexplained per se, but there are a lot of gaps in a reader might use their imaginative juices to patch together. It's a modern story with some sci-fi trappings, but at its core, this is an ethereal fairy tale that draws prominently on ancient myths. It's quite fun.

This edition includes chapters 15-21 of the original manga.

The plot is still a mile a minute, and I wish we’d slowed down a bit more in order to develop the rest of the Sailor Soldiers, but at least we got a chapter each that centred each one before the rest of the plot kicked in.

There were some lovely moments from the art perspective, but nothing as standout as last volume. Chibi-Usa was an interesting addition to the cast, and I mostly sympathised with her rather than finding her annoying. Usagi actually spends time this volume being jealous of Chibi-Usa in a way that feels frankly absurd, and there are some moments that would no doubt please Freud but I won’t go into it.

It continues to be camp and pretty, and I’m excited for next volume. Go Chibi-Usa!

Oh jeez, I am so conflicted about this volume. Just like everyone else, I found some positives about it, but also there were some negatives that *really* creeped me TF out, or were just really irritating. WTH, let’s just roll with it:

The Positives:
- The artwork is still effing gorgeous. Ms. Takeuchi never fails on that score, and I continue to love the new artwork she made for the covers. *coos*
- Mamoru actually gets some powers. I watched the original DiC translation of the anime back as a tween/early teen, and one of my biggest peeves even then was that Mamoru (or Darien, as he was called in that version) was pretty much Usagi’s/Serena’s arm candy. The man threw roses at people, said a few inspirational or defiant words (depending on who he was talking to), and then pretty much jumped here and there to keep Sailor Moon from getting blasted to dust. Like, dude, you’re the fucking reincarnated Prince of Earth. Don’t tell me you don’t have abilities on par with the rest of the Senshi, if not Usagi herself. Of course, in subsequent translations, we did learn a little bit about his abilities, but my brain is still kind of imprinted on the DiC translation, which only ran through the first two seasons where his sole purpose was to make Usagi swoon and/or angst. But anyway, rant aside, I loved that Mamoru has the power of psychometry, can talk to his sort-of-dead Shitennou, culminating in an actual energy-based attack. Hooray for not making Mamoru useless! Very cool touch.
- Diana, the daughter of Luna and Artemis – ADORABLE KITTY IS ADORABLE!
- Venus kicking all kinds of ass and being the only one of the Inner Senshi who doesn’t get kidnapped and held prisoner.
- Sailor Pluto FTW! So freaking badass, and not to mention terrifying!

And then come…

The Negatives:
- OMFG. Crop circles? Alien abductions? UFOS? *facepalm* Damn, but I do not remember things being this cheesy.
- Chibi-Usa being 900 years old. I remember the first time I read a translation of the manga and being so intrigued by that little factoid (since it hadn’t made it into any of the anime I’d seen at that point). Now… um… Okay, I can get behind something stopping her from aging physically – that’s something that’s been done before. I refer you to Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire, where there was the child-vampire Claudia, a human girl turned into a vampire as a young girl and who remained that age physically, never growing into a physical adult (or, if you’re like me and refuse to touch any of Anne Rice’s books anymore, just watch the movie). The idea that Chibi-Usa is 900 years old but still looks like a 5-year-old is not so far out there. What I can’t get around is that she is 900 years old and still *acts* like a 5-year-old. She’s lived her life all that time, right? She didn’t go into some kind of deep sleep like her mom did when she got crystal-fied. So how the hell did she not learn and grow from her experiences? How does she not have the mind of an adult trapped in the boy of a 5-year-old (which, tbh, is equally as horrifying, but still)? Has she essentially been in kindergarten for the past 900 years, never passing onto the next grade level?
- Usagi being jealous of a 5-year-old, and actually implying that Chibi-Usa wants to do grown up things with Mamoru. My god, but this whole thing just freaks me TF out like nobody’s business. The incest intimations here were so freaking creepy, and this is coming from someone who watched Game of Thrones. And that Usagi continued to be jealous and insecure over her relationship with Mamoru and his bond with Chibi-Usa was really wearing. We saw Usagi go through the whole uncertainty thing when Mamoru was brainwashed into being Queen Beryl’s flunky/possible boy-toy in the first season, being torn about his evilness vs. him being the guy who saved her and made her heart beat really *really* fast. It doesn’t seem necessary to have to revisit that kind of plotline again, particularly when tacking on the incestuous overtones. *shudders*
- Sailor Pluto. I mark her as a positive and a negative. I would absolutely *love* to go at least one season where someone isn’t suffering unrequited love for Mamoru. Or, in Demande’s case, suffering unrequited lust for Usagi and giving us those vaguely rapey hints. Ugh.

So yeah, I’m conflicted, and rather irked by a lot of what came up – and I do recall what is to come up next, since this volume concluded with Chibi-Usa’s abduction by the Wiseman. *sigh* Gotta get through it, and then we can get on to the next season where, IIRC, Chibi-Usa is slightly less irritating.

Fully upfront but I have no idea in starting this review what to rate this volume! I hope I know by the end but this was a whirlwind (and I mean that quite literally) of confusion and emotions and just everything went by so FAST. Honestly this plot took off from the start and never stopped to breathe even once, gave me whiplash about three times, and generally was in such a darn hurry I never got to grasp what was going on for longer then a second before something else was thrown at me and the characters. I don’t know if that was intentional or not but compared to the first two volumes this was like jumping from a regular car driving down the road into a Ferrari going over 100 miles without stopping in between to make an actual transition. Whiplash, I tell you!

Shockingly out of all the characters aside from newcomer Chibi Usa (who I’ll get to in a minute) the only character I felt we sat down with and developed to any degree was Mamoru which I wasn’t expecting at all. Don’t get me wrong, I love Tuxedo Mask (he’s probably my favorite character so far if I sat down and thought about it) and I loved seeing his powers grow and his struggles and kindness, but I was surprised that most everyone else got a bit neglected even with something as simple as page time. Again, was this intentional? If so it seems like a weird choice to sideline almost everyone because of…reasons?

Then we have Chibi Usa (who spell checker keeps trying to spell as USA, lol). I know most people find her a brat (which, let’s be real, she is, lol) and annoying, but I didn’t mind her and actually felt where she was coming from on feeling alone and unwanted with no friends and thinking no one cared about her. However, why oh WHY did we need the weird “she has a crush on her future dad” plot line?!?! I knew this was coming from hearing about it through the grapevine but still! At least he was EXTREMELY uncomfortable with the whole thing and only treated her as a little girl he cared about, but why did the mangaka feel this was the best way to show that Chibi Usa was “jealous” of Usagi? Just, UGH, I hate this part! I really hope the anime(s) tone this down some (because Volume 4 is somewhat worse in this regard, ugh), but if it HAS to be here at least the mangaka doesn’t paint this as a good thing for Chibi Usa to be feeling or doing which makes it slightly easier to swallow.

…but only slightly.

This volume is messy and too fast paced for comfort or clarity but there were moments I liked and characters I still root for and love even when they’re being over emotional or ridiculous, so I think after all my ramblings and confusion over this stinking plot and its problems I’m going to give it a solid three stars. Not fantastic, not great, but not so terrible I’m calling it quits.

Whew. This volume right here? Best one so far, no question.

Vol. 3 had me locked in. The stakes shot all the way up, and the story finally hit that epic level I’ve been waiting for.

Usagi steps up for real, the Moon Kingdom backstory goes wild, and the whole squad feels more powerful and more connected. And my boy Tuxedo Mask finally bosses up. He’s not just throwing roses...he gets depth, danger, and real purpose in the plot. I was hype.

The last few chapters? Intense. Emotional. Straight heat.
This is where Sailor Moon stops being cute and turns into a full-on cosmic drama.

Easily the dopest volume yet.

This took me a while to read because life got in the way, but holy crap this volume had SO MUCH happening!! And it ended on a crazy cliffhanger! I don’t remember the show being so complex with these sci-fi elements, but I was also a little kid so I only remember the basic plot from early episodes. So many cool ideas happening here. Let’s see what happens next! 😊🌙✨

Die Verzweiflung und die allgemein bedrohliche Stimmung in der ersten Hälfte wurden gut rübergebracht.
Die Beziehung zwischen Usagi und Chibiusa kann sehr anstrengend sein und Usagis Reaktionen wirken nicht immer angemessen. Aber wenn ich mir vor Augen führe, dass sie erst 14 ist, immer wieder mit super wierden Ereignissen konfrontiert wird und ständig den Druck der Anführerin spüren muss, wirkt alles etwas nachvollziehbarer.

"Age has nothing to do with it! It doesn't matter how little she is. A woman's a woman! ......I'm sorry. I think... Something's wrong with me. She IS just a little girl. And here I am getting jealous."

Usagi!?
I'm sorry, but the tone of this volume is extremely strange and all kinds of off after the introduction of Chibi-Usa. For those unaware, Chibi-Usa is the daughter of Usagi and Mamoru from the future. Don't worry about the time travel thing too much. That is the least of my concerns with this.

Usagi's primary character arc of the volume is being jealous of the attention Mamoru gives to Chibi-Usa. And this jealousy is very specifically framed to be romantic.
Usagi... sees a little girl... HER DAUGHTER... as a romantic rival potentially stealing her man.

Huh??

And for a moment she sounds like she understands how absurd that is, only for her to keep blowing up at her boyfriend anyway for allegedly being more into his own kid than her. What. What??
What is happening...?

Furthermore, the age gap between Mamoru and Usagi rears its ugly head again as this volume strongly implies the two have sex at least once. A fourteen-year-old and a "seventeen- or eighteen-year-old. " Right...
Okay.

So, yes, this volume is just radiating bad vibes. And that's not even the only reason I don't like it.
The plot is also really weak.
Way too much of the volume is a repetitive cycle of the villains showing up and kidnapping one of the Sailor Scouts. They appear, Sailor Moon throws some attacks that don't work, a scout is abducted, and Sailor Moon screams in despair as she realizes she lost. Again.

What makes this worse is that despite being very upset when they're kidnapped, the disappearances of her best friends don't otherwise weigh on Usagi at all as she casually continues her life playing arcade games and getting petty over romantic drama while Mars, Mercury, and Jupiter are possibly being tortured or killed. Her complete lack of concern in multiple scenes not only makes her look selfish but also kills any emotional stakes.

And then we get to the part where time travel enters the story.
Oh boy...
You know, I am at least happy that we are introduced to Sailor Pluto.
That's pretty neat.
The rest of the volume was kind of awful by the standards the previous volumes have set.
It especially doesn't help that the story is completely centered around Chibi-Usa, and I am not a fan. I wouldn't be a fan even if she didn't have weird incestuous undertones with her dad. I just don't like her, and the story is barely even trying to change my mind.

Malgré un scénario simpliste et très tiré par les cheveux, j’ai été happée par ce troisième volume des aventures d’Usagi et sa bande. Cette fois nos belles guerrières en costume marin vont aller dans le futur ! Et ce sera l’occasion pour nous de (re) rencontrer la sublime Sailor Pluto (j’aime ce personnage d’amour), gardienne de la porte du temps.

Les révélations et rebondissements s’enchaînent très bien et les explications même capillotractées, tiennent la route. Tout de même, lorsqu’Usagi et Mamoru découvrent qui est Chibiusa, je m’attendais à des réactions plus vives de leur part. Tout comme la rencontre avec King Endymion (est-ce que je peux quand même dire que je trouve son costume hyper kitch et ridicule ?), la version plus âgée de Tuxedo Masqué. Ça manquait de peps selon moi.

Concernant les dessins et la mise en pages « old school », je suis toujours aussi fan. Ça reste pour moi un véritable petit bonheur à relire. Et que dire de la sublime version offerte par les éditions Pika ?

Bref. Ce troisième tome fait monter la pression. L’histoire se déroule et on la redécouvre avec un plaisir sincère. Sailor Moon reste une valeur sûre du shôjo manga qui vieillit plutôt bien.

Bon, c'était déjà pas mon arc préféré dans l'anime

Encore une fois choquée de la profondeur qui est donnée au personnage de Mamoru là où dans l'anime il sert archi a rien et il a 0, mais alors 0 profondeur. C'est sympa de voir un peu plus ce qui se passe dans sa tête

Aussi, on voit que l'écriture date des années 90 car l'INFLUENCE des théories extraterrestre, des UFO, des crop-circle est très présente et est cool, je trouve ça intelligent de se servir d'un phénomène inexpliqué pour créer une histoire.
Ah, et j'ai ENFIN (et seulement maintenant), fini par comprendre pourquoi Sailor Moon et Usagi sont le même personne. Dans l'anime, ils ont sauté toute la partie explication bref 💀

Bon, j'ai jamais aimé le personnage de chibiusa donc voilà
Et j'ai jamais aimé les méchants de cet arc, surtout le roi de mes fesses qui agresse juste Usagi, ew.

Je laisse 4 étoiles parce que vas y c'est Sailor Moon et je suis pas objective, que les dessins et la mise en page restent incroyables, et qu'on a beaucoup plus d'infos et de world building que dans l'anime.

I was always rather annoyed that they had Chibiusa just delay telling everyone why she was hanging around them. Feels like a lot could've been avoided if she'd just told someone, literally anyone, why she was there.

Anyway, this plot feels unnecessarily drawn out. I enjoyed the first volume quite a bit because it was more episodic. The first real arc with Queen Beryl was pretty well paced, although I never got a clear read on the power scaling. I usually don't care about that kind of thing, but there was so little information provided that I started to have questions. This is the second real arc and it just feels long.

I didn't remember what happened with the Moon soldiers in the anime - I don't remember them continuing to be available when Tuxedo Mask had questions. I also didn't remember him having powers but I watched it so long ago. Maybe I just have terrible memory.

Anyway, this book ends on a cliffhanger, so the arc continues. The art continues to be gorgeous!
