When Ruby and Sid see a poster about a missing dog, they can’t believe it. It reminds them of an adventure they had, and a little dog they once met. Could it be the same Jack Pepper?
My fascination with animals began when I was aged 8 and a stray cat walked in the back door and decided to adopt me. As a child, I wanted to be a writer and used to dictate stories to my mother, but eventually I bought a laptop and decided I could type them myself. I live in Dorset and share the space around my desk with two dogs, Harry and Coco. MA in Creative and Critical Writing from University of Winchester.
Quite a nice idea for a story but I didn't think it worked. We were invited into sharing the children's imaginative play but I could feel that the class did not engage with it and would actually have been more interested in pursuing the story of the dog itself. It's quite a feat to write the inner play world of a child in a way that real children recognize. It didn't work. They would have been happier with a plainer story about some children finding a dog.
When Ruby notices a poster about a missing dog, she believes it may be the little dog her and her friend Sid had a little adventure with a few years before. Could it be the same Jack Pepper? Ruby was feeling terrible left out when her baby brother arrived, but with the help of Jack Pepper, and her friend Sid, plus a little adventure magic, Ruby finds a way to overcome her battles.
This story comes from the best selling author of A Dog Called Homeless, Sarah Lean, who tells the tale of an extraordinary little puppy, and a pair of adventurous friends. It seems that Jack Pepper may have had a few adventures of his own this time. It is a tale with very real emotions, and as there has been a time or two...or three or four, in everyone’s life where we have felt a little left out, this story will definitely relate to all that read it. Suitable for 8-12 I would say.

This was a fast and cute read that I wish was longer and had finished the story. Not bad for a children's story though I tend to give them more credit than this story does and would make it longer and finish it of like something by C.S. Lewis or Lloyd Alexander than this short ending though I understand why it was done this way. You need to sell more books and this is a Great way to for one to do it. Start a decent story, finish it of for the most part and wait for it to be continued in another book if you want to read that far but let it stay where it is if you don't. The hook is there for another book and it is a nice big hook with a juicy worm too. I just wish it was more in this book. Overall though the book is very well written, amazingly thought out characters, and great fun to read. I really liked it a ton and would have given it a five star rating if it had been longer.
So sweetly written and demonstrates the wonderful imaginations of children Reminds me of the games I used to play as a child Also relatable as I have a puppy and reminds me how delicate they are and how they can impact ones life! Utterly beautiful
