A Primer on Utopian Philosophy

Rate this book
The utopian project lies in ruins, but perhaps in our present moment, there are elements from the history of thought that can provide fresh resources for utopianism. In this groundbreaking introduction, Jon Greenaway explores the work of German philosopher Ernst Bloch, whose complex and challenging philosophy is a primer for a philosophical renewal of the struggle for a better world.

Few people can write clearer and unpack dense philosophical projects as Greenaway can. As a longtime follower of his written work and podcast projects - Ernest Bloch may have earned a new disciple through this primer on his philosophy. Greenaway expertly walks the reader through Bloch's concepts of "not yet" and Philosophy of Hope and truly inspires to continue reading more. If anything, I wanted this primer to be more of an introduction to his work, because Greenaway's voice is both so thrilling and fun at times - when was the last time you could say that about a philosophical work. Short (40 pages) and written in clear language, while still incorporating direct quotes from translated editions of Bloch's work - this is a no-brainer starting point if you want to read about Earnest Bloch.

The author manages to give an impressively lucid overview of Bloch's theoretical while at the same time, situating his ideas in today's sociopolitical climate.

Short book that packs a punch and really manages to make you excited to jump into utopian philosophy

Bonus points for clear yet beautiful prose.

All around a very good read and I'd say definitely more than a mere primer.

A short and sweet book that provides a great summary of Ernst Bloch’s contributions to utopian philosophy. I especially appreciated the recommendations to further work at the end- a great read!

I'm just impressed at how good of a writer Jonathan Greenaway is. Very good introduction. It's so nice to read about something I had no ideas about and actually enjoy it.
