Typical story of a straight girl crushing on a gay girl, denying it over and over, trying really hard with her boyfriend, and finally giving in to her attraction

Jess and Sydney's meet-cute is actually kind of adorable. Jess is stuck going to her dad's umpteenth wedding and on the train, she meets Sydney. A train delay turns into a fun chat and they almost exchange numbers. They plan to hang out again but life gets in the way. So, Jess, feeling a bit lost, decides to stick with her boyfriend and try to move on from this whole Sydney situation. And what are the chances that Jess and her roommate are looking for another roommate and Sydney just happens to show up, completely unaware?

So, ever since Sydney moved in, and with all the drama between Sydney and Jess, Chloe, the other roommate, tells Jess she has a crush on Sydney. So now Jess has another excuse not to act on her own feelings for Sydney. But Sydney's patient, and she's got eyes only for Jess. She's gonna wait for things to fall into place.

3.5⭐️This book has many good things. I loved the meet-cute and the fate factor. The chemistry between Jess and Sydney was palpable. The dialogues are witty. The meddling characters—Ben, Pam, Violet—were likeable. Some things annoyed me. Jess's boyfriend is somewhat mean in a caricatured way, although I know it is to make the main character look good and the reader feel guilt-free. Jess staying with him was dragged out a bit too long, even if I understand her hesitation. As a result, I was team Sydney (who is perfect), and I wish she had gone on a date or two to make Jess jealous. Finally, shorter chapters would have made the reading smoother, but overall, I had a good time reading this book. P.S. Chloe and Dana's relationship is toxic, yet they end up together?

2.5 ⭐

I had high hopes for this book, but it turned out to be a bit disappointing for me.

Several aspects didn’t work for me. I struggled to connect with Jess, despite my efforts. Her insistence on being straight, despite clear signs to the contrary, and her decision to stay with a boyfriend who was utterly insufferable, were frustrating. For nearly half the book, I found myself wanting to shake some sense into her. Sydney, at least, was a likable character.

The lack of chemistry between the main characters was another letdown. While their feelings were described, I couldn’t understand where they came from. That said, Ben was a good addition and brought some lighthearted moments to the story. I usually enjoy slow-burn romances, but this one felt like it dragged too long before reaching any meaningful connection.

Now, to the main reason for my low rating: Despite being a relatively short book, these 20 chapters felt unnecessarily long. This made it a challenging read at times. Additionally, the frequent changes in point of view, especially in the early chapters, were confusing. It often took a while to realize whose perspective I was reading until a name was mentioned.

Overall, this book had the potential to be something unique, but it missed the mark. I wouldn’t call it a bad book, but be prepared for a slow and occasionally frustrating read.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for providing me with an ARC.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Very enjoyable and cute romance! I really liked the dynamic between Jess and Sydney, and I'm confused by other reviews saying they have no chemistry. I disagree, I think they have excellent chemistry and the book has a ton of banter and scenes between the two MCs. Sydney in particular I really liked, I loved her positive energy and outgoing personality.

There were a couple of minor things I disliked, mainly Jess staying with Austin for so long, and the conclusion was a bit of a stereotypical Hallmark romance ending.

Overall, however, I think this was a very sweet book. Enjoyable characters, good banter, and fun tropes make this book a solid 4.8/5 stars rounded up!

The roommate is a story about two people with a chance encounter finding each other Back In one another’s lives.

Jess meets Sydney on a train in London and has an instant connection. They have to go their separate ways but plan to meet later that evening on the train. Sydney never showed up so Jess goes along her way.
But what chance- there is an open vacancy in the apartment Jess lives at and guess who ends up filling it?
You guessed it- Sydney.

Despite their initial attraction, Jess is in a relationship and also has never liked women before.

The story ends up being one of friendship, curiosity and finding oneself. It was a fun read overall and I personally enjoyed being able to see the struggle of both Jess and Sydney as they tried to figure out what they wanted and what they deserved. I felt on the page the feelings of Jess questioning who they were and battling everything she thought she knew. On the flip side, Sydney dealing with feelings with someone who was currently questioning themselves but also balancing self worth.

Ben was a cute aspect to the book. I also loved the way the story wrapped up in the end. Even though the connection is instant, I appreciated how the timing worked in the book. There was no rushed story and there relationship seemed organic for what situations they were in. There also was no big betrayal or third act common trope that was appreciated. Even though there was some miscommunication, it didn’t seem forced and I felt lime in the places it happened- I could see if happening like that in real life.

The Roommate was a very sweet read. Jess and Sydney meet on a train, have a connection but think they'll never see each other again. This is a premise I absolutely love because as a romantic, I'm a big believer in fate having a hand in some romance stories. I really enjoyed the way that The Roommate played out in regard to this aspect.

Jess and Sydney have an undeniable chemistry, and their interactions kept the story engaging. I particularly loved Sydney’s bright and outgoing personality, which balanced Jess’s more hesitant and introspective nature. The way their relationship evolved felt natural, with Jess navigating her unexpected attraction and Sydney balancing her own feelings. Plus, the side characters—especially Pam and Violet—added some fun and warmth to the story.

That said, while I enjoyed the book overall, there were some aspects that didn’t quite work for me. Jess staying in her relationship with Austin for so long was frustrating. He was an absolute douche so it was more from that angle, but it did also hold back the emotional depth between Jess and Sydney. The romance, while super sweet, lacked some of the development I was hoping for—and I think this was because the ending wrapped up a little too neatly without a fully fleshed-out resolution.

Despite this though, the book was still a fun and easy read with plenty of charm. If you’re looking for a lighthearted sapphic romance with good chemistry, quirky details, and a feel-good ending, this is worth picking up.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bold Strokes Books for a copy of this novel. ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

Claire Forsythe’s The Roommate is a heartfelt and refreshingly unique romance that delivers far more than its premise initially suggests. While the setup might seem familiar—two strangers navigating life as roommates—the story delves into unexpected depths, exploring personal growth, emotional obstacles, and the complexities of human connection.

Forsythe has a gift for creating relatable characters, and that’s where this book truly shines. The challenges faced by the protagonists feel authentic, with obstacles that are deeply human and easy to empathize with. Their journey, both individually and together, is compelling, and the emotional resonance ensures readers are fully invested in their story.

What sets The Roommate apart is its balance of romance and realism. While the romantic connection is undeniably engaging, the story also tackles themes of self-discovery, communication, and overcoming past traumas. Forsythe skillfully weaves these elements into a narrative that feels both modern and timeless.

Despite mixed reviews, this book is a standout for its relatability and the fresh take it brings to the romance genre. Forsythe’s ability to blend humor, heartache, and hope makes The Roommate an engrossing read that offers something for everyone. Whether you’re here for the romance or the emotional journey, this story delivers in all the best ways. A must-read for fans of contemporary romance with depth.

As much as I thought the premise of The Roommate was cute, it fell a bit flat for me. The reading experience was still enjoyable because of the fun side characters (I loved Ben!) and the quirky little details about soap and hairstylists and penguins. Unfortunately the main relationship didn’t have enough depth in it for me. By the end, it felt like I just finished a book about two new roommates/friends who went on one fun date, rather than two people who are in love for life. Jess staying with her boyfriend for that long was frustrating (and added to the lack of depth in her and Sydney’s relationship). I’m not sure if I would recommend this book but I would read more from this author because I do see the potential!

This novel. There were parts I liked, and parts I disliked. Overall, the dislike won, but it was not all bad. There were so many elements that I didn’t like in this novel, although to its credit there was usually some minor redeeming elements at play; an explanation or justification was given even though it was very underwhelming. This novel tried, it truly did, and I have to give it some credit for that. It somehow felt very long and dragged despite being a relatively short novel, which isn’t a good thing.

The meet-cute was nice. The overall structure of the novel had a lot of potential. I think the characters had a lot of chemistry….. but that just made their utter refusal to get together more annoying.

This got a “C-“ from me, and I’m rounding down to 2-stars.

Nitpicks from me in no particular order:
-Cartoonishly bad boyfriend. I know its a common thing in romances to make the current love interest over-the-top awful to make the new love interest look better (and so we don’t feel bad for the former one), but honestly I always find it lazy and annoying.
-Why did they keep calling her straight? She had openly admitted she was into her?
-This novel somehow managed to have protagonists that were good at communicating sometimes yet also incredibly bad at communicating at other times. “Almost” like it changed moment to moment in order to serve the plot.
-Why did they wait so long to get together, particularly after “obstacles” were no longer in the way (did I avoid spoilers, lol?)? At a certain point I didn’t really see any good reason for the protagonists not getting together other than to drag out the novel.
-There was a side romance, and I hated it. It was objectively toxic and awful from what we saw, yet it was thrown in at the end as something we were supposed to be happy about?

Jess meets Sydney on a train and feels an instant connection. There are just a few problems. Jess has a boyfriend and she doesn’t like women like that, or so she thinks. That’s okay though, as despite arranging to meet again later and missing each other, fate drags them right back together again as roommates.

I really enjoyed this book - it felt a bit slow to start with but the last 20% really made up for it and is what solidified my four star review. The characters were likeable - apart from Austin - and I could empathise with Jess’s struggles in coming to terms with her sexuality. As far as tropes go you have miscommunication, and forced proximity. The book has a good level of spice, however not lots of it. The ending was so lovely and really wholesome. I disagreed with others who felt that the main characters had limited chemistry - I thought their connection was palpable and very clear from their initial interactions. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next one from Claire Forsythe in the future.

I loved the chemistry between the two main characters. It was an instant attraction which I enjoyed. The feelings of the main woman getting involved in a new relationship with the same sex is really well written. It kept me intrigued to see how it ended. I highly recommend anyone to read this book.

Good start. Knew from the blurb they would be unexpected room mates and was a bit impatient for that to start. The first meeting as room mates I felt so sorry for Sydney. Keen to read more.
Dream scene didn't work for me. I enjoyed the book but felt the forbidden longing went on a bit. Enjoyed some bits above a 3, but other bits a bit less, so settled to a 3.

2⭐ | A Promising Premise That Misses the Mark

I really wanted to enjoy The Roommate by Claire Forsythe. The setup had all the ingredients for a compelling slow-burn romance: an unexpected meet-cute, a forced proximity situation, and the added tension of forbidden attraction. Unfortunately, while there were moments that shone, the overall execution left me underwhelmed.

The premise had promise: Jess, a confident woman with her life seemingly in order, meets Sydney, a free-spirited woman who throws her emotions into turmoil. The idea of a housemate situation forcing them to confront their feelings sounded like a great setup for chemistry and tension. Sadly, that chemistry never quite landed for me. The attraction between Jess and Sydney felt more told than shown, making it difficult to root for their eventual connection.

What Worked:

- The meet-cute on the train was charming and set a strong foundation for what I hoped would be a great story.

- Sydney was a bright spot—likable and relatable, even when the narrative didn’t do her justice.

- Ben, Sydney’s nephew, added some warmth and levity to the story.

What Didn’t Work:

- Jess’s characterization: Her insistence on being “straight” felt forced and frustrating, especially when her actions clearly contradicted her words. Her unwillingness to let go of her awful boyfriend, despite obvious issues, dragged the story down.

- Pacing issues: While I love a good slow burn, this one felt unnecessarily drawn out. The push-pull dynamic between Jess and Sydney became repetitive and exhausting by the halfway point.

- Confusing POV shifts: The frequent switching between Jess and Sydney’s perspectives made it difficult to stay immersed in the story. It often took me a while to figure out whose head I was in, which disrupted the flow.

- The boyfriend trope: Jess’s boyfriend felt like a caricature of every bad romance trope. His awfulness was so over-the-top that it detracted from the narrative rather than enhancing it.

While the book is relatively short, it somehow felt like it dragged on, especially in the middle chapters. The obstacles keeping Jess and Sydney apart felt more like plot devices than organic conflicts, and their eventual resolution came too late to feel satisfying.

Ultimately, The Roommate wasn’t a bad book, but it failed to deliver on its potential. Fans of slow-burn romances might still find something to enjoy here, but for me, the lack of chemistry, pacing issues, and underdeveloped characters made this a frustrating read. It’s not one I’d revisit, but I can see how it might work for others looking for a low-stakes, slice-of-life romance.

A very sweet very very slow burn Sapphic contemporary romance set in London. Jess and Sydney meet o the train and sparks fly, but when they don’t exchange info and their plans to met up fall apart they doubt they’ll ever meet again. Till, as the title suggests, Sydney ends up as Jess’s newest roommate. This is a very slow burn with lots of yearning, some witty banter, and a few great scenes that had me giggling. Overall not the most memorable thing I’ve read, but it was cute, and fun.

I felt like the first part of the book was very slow both getting to the point where Sydney was moving in and then especially when it came to the situation with Jess’s boyfriend. I can appreciate a good bi-awakening trope, but Jess’s struggle with her own internalized homophobia was incredibly frustrating. I found myself wanting to shake Jess many times. Lastly, I think the two POVs just read very similar and since there wasn’t a clear delineation between where one POV ended and another began I got confused a few times as to which POV it was.

Jess and Sydney meet on a train and both surprise about the instant connection they make. Jess is annoyed that her father is getting married again and she has to attend Sydney is still hurting over her break up. They both decided to meet again but life got in the way but a chance of fate put them in each other orbit when Jess is looking for another roommate who share with her other friend Chloe love their relationship and is shock when it’s Sydney the woman she can’t stop thinking about. This was a cute read it’s drag a bit with Jess prolonging ending things with her boyfriend but I enjoy Jess found family at work and Sydney relationship with her sister.

This is my first book by Claire Forsythe, and I absolutely adored it. Now, I want to go read her backlog.
The meeting was cute and fun. This book had the push and pull, angsty throughout. Yet, the MCs were able to have some kind of relationship. It was flirty and not too heavy.
The secondary characters were delightful and added to the story. From the co-workers to the sister and nephew, all were intricate. I loved the make-up scene and what it involved..
I look forward to more books by this author in the future.

Thank you NetGalley for the kindle copy!

If you ever judged a book by its cover, as I did with The Roommates, you might be tempted to overlook this one. Let me start by saying: don’t. The cover, which I personally found cartoonish and reminiscent of a young adult novel, belies the depth and charm within its pages. If I weren't tasked with reviewing this book, I likely would have passed it by. My advice to the publisher? Consider a redesign—one that better reflects the mature, emotionally resonant story inside.

The Writing and Narrative

Despite my initial hesitation, I found myself devouring The Roommates in just one day. The writing is engaging and flows, pulling the reader into a story that feels real. The setting is vividly described, lending an immersive backdrop to the drama that unfolds.

What stood out most, however, was the character development. The protagonist and supporting cast were brought to life with such detail that they felt like people you’d know—or, in some cases, avoid. Secondary characters, often overlooked in many novels, are given their moments to shine here. This attention to detail added humor, warmth, and depth to the story.

Character Highlights

Take Ben, the adorable nephew. His presence brought a sense of grounding to the story, and his interactions with the other characters added layers of charm. Then there are Pam and Vi, the witty and spirited owners of the hair salon. These two were a delightful addition, providing humor and wisdom in equal measure. Their scenes never failed to bring a smile, and they acted as a much-needed counterbalance to the heavier emotional beats.

As for the protagonists, Jess and Sydney, their dynamic was… complicated, to say the least. I’ll admit, I didn’t like Jess. She’s selfish, brash, and, quite frankly, a bit of an ass. But that’s the brilliance of the writing: she’s well-crafted and unapologetically authentic, flaws and all. Her imperfections make her feel real, even if I wouldn’t want her as a roommate or partner.

Sydney, on the other hand, is the polar opposite. Vulnerable and kind, she falls hard and fast, which makes her an easy character to root for. Yet her naïveté is frustrating at times—she doesn’t always see Jess for who she truly is. There were moments when I found myself thinking that Jess almost deserved her (ex-)boyfriend, as harsh as that sounds. But this tension, this messiness, is what makes their story so compelling.

The Romance and Plot

The slow-burn romance is executed brilliantly. With enough near-misses and "almost" moments to keep you hooked. Every time I thought something was about to happen, the narrative would pull back just enough to build the tension. By the time the romantic payoff arrives, it feels earned and satisfying.

The opening of the book also deserves special mention. While Sydney’s willingness to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger might be outside my personal comfort zone (and I’d likely share Jess’s skeptical reaction), it sets the tone perfectly. The banter between them is sharp and witty, immediately establishing their contrasting personalities and the spark that will drive the story forward.

Final Thoughts

The Roommates is a delightful surprise—a story that manages to be heartfelt, funny, and human. It’s a testament to the author’s skill that even when I didn’t like certain characters, I couldn’t stop reading. The secondary characters, the setting, and the slow-burn romance all contribute to a book that’s hard to put down.

So, while the cover might need a makeover, the story inside is undeniably worth your time. If you’re looking for a book that will make you laugh, tug at your heartstrings, and remind you of the messy, beautiful complexity of relationships, give The Roommates a chance. You won’t regret it.

Thank you so much to Claire Forsythe, NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for providing me with an ARC! This review is my honest opinion.

I started this book around three hours ago and have just finished it, I didn't put it down once - it was so gripping and compelling.

Overall, I loved the plot, I loved the characters (except Austin; fuck you, Austin), I loved everything about it.

Jess; I enjoyed Jess's character, I think it was very relatable although she did frustrate me occasionally. She basically thought she was straight her entire life, she is in a long-term relationship with her boyfriend but then she realises that she may not be so straight after all... I understand why she was so reluctant when it came to her feelings - realising your sexuality might not be what you thought it was is overwhelming! I do think she should have had better communication though. Other than that, I loved her.

Sydney; Sydney might be my favourite character, I adore her so much. She was very mature and level-headed, I found her to be a beautifully written character. I don't have much to say about her character because I didn't notice any flaws - she was right to be hurt and hesitant, but I did love how she overcame it and allowed herself to love Jess.

Austin; I have no words for Austin, fuck you Austin.

Chloe; I loved Chloe's character, she was a really good best friend. Although one plot hole is that the other friend that moved out, the previous roommate? She's never mentioned again. I felt bad for Chloe, I won't say why because it's a spoiler but I'm really glad she got her happy ending.

Pam & Violet; they were such perfect side characters, they were so nosy and lovable. Pam, always the mischievous one and then Violet, the more demure of the two! I really enjoyed having these two in this story, I think they just made it so much better.

Ben & Rachel; I don't have much to say about them either - I loved Rachel's sisterly protectiveness over Sydney! It was very realistic. I love reading about siblings bonds in books. As for Ben, he was a sweet side character, I really adored how he immediately bonded with Jess and was so friendly and sweet.

As a woman that loves women (a lot, so much), I think this book was perfect representation for us sapphics. Jess slowly realising her sexuality isn't what she thought it was, combined with Sydney's longing for Jess made for such a beautiful read.

This book was definitely insta-love, although there was a major slow burn for them to actually get together. It was filled with tension, longing and yearning. There was a spicy scene near the end, but there was so much built-up tension before it that it just made the scene more passionate.

I really did enjoy this book, the only reason why I didn't give it a 5🌟 was because I felt the situation between Austin and Jess was too cliche - I think she should have broken up with him much earlier than she did. Other than that, I would definitely recommend it! I am going to recommend it to a couple of friends that I know will enjoy it.

Again, thank you to the author, Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-arc. I am really grateful and I had so much fun reading this book.

Jess Black’s seemingly perfect life takes an unexpected turn when a fleeting connection with a stranger on a train stirs feelings she didn’t know she could have. When that same woman, Sydney Fletcher, moves into the empty bedroom in her apartment, Jess struggles to ignore (and understand) her feelings. Sydney, fresh from a breakup and looking for a new start, is caught off guard to find her new roommate is the person she thought fate brought to her on that train. While Jess tries to suppress (and deny) her growing attraction, Sydney wonders if maybe fate's love isn’t in the cards for her after all. Despite their efforts to resist and just be friends, the bond between them becomes increasingly impossible to ignore.

This book was an enjoyable and well-paced read with a thoughtful romance at its core. The chemistry between Jess and Sydney felt authentic, and I appreciated how their relationship took its time, growing from an initial attraction into a genuine friendship before Jess finally acknowledged her feelings. I’ve seen other reviews that said they were annoyed with the way Jess handled things but I honestly felt like it was more authentic knowing it was the first time Jess ever had any sort of attraction to another woman. Feelings and relationships can be scary and, even though it frustrated me at times, I understood Jess’s hesitation. The alternating perspectives of Jess and Sydney provided insight into both characters’ emotions and struggles. I also really enjoyed the supporting characters and thought they all added warmth and humor, enhancing the overall dynamic without overshadowing the main plot. Chloe’s humor, Ben’s adorableness, Rachel’s wisdom, and Pam and Violet’s nosiness were all integral to Jess and Sydney’s journey. Their first encounter on the train was a charming setup, and the ending, with its romantic gesture, brought everything together in a satisfying and heartfelt way. In the end, The Roommate is a thoughtful slow-burn romance that I would definitely recommend.

Thank you to Bold Strokes Books, Inc. and NetGalley for the opportunity to read to an ARC of The Roommate in return for my honest review.

“The Roommate” is a sweet, slow-burn* sapphic romance. Featuring “straight” Jess and freshly single Sydney. They meet on a train under unrelated, distraught circumstances. For Jess, she realizes her attraction to a woman for the first time. Sydney, however, falls head over heels right off the bat. They end up serendipitously meeting once again when Sydney takes over a room in Jess and her bestie (Chloe’s) apartment.

For first impressions, however, I have to say that the book's cover is terrible and doesn’t represent the quality of this book at all. The cover looks like two childish cartoon dolls. The art looks amateurish and unprofessional. I personally would be embarrassed to be holding this book in public. (Thank god for kindles). PLEASE, I beg, get different cover art for this book before it's released.

Otherwise, I enjoyed “The Roommate.” The book does a good job of taking a popular trope (“and they were roommates”) and making it special and unique. The meet-cute was exciting and fun, and the longing between the two characters felt palpable.

One aspect I disliked was how long the main character, Jess, took to break up with her boyfriend. Her avoidance and discussion of him did feel like it went on too long and became repetitive. Additionally, I feel like the book wrapped up too quickly. I know it’s common in romance novels for the big breakup to occur towards the end, and then they reunite and solve everything right before the end of the book, but I guess I was hoping for something different. Especially since I felt like this book had a lot to offer, especially not necessarily falling into the formula of other books.

I enjoyed the found family aspect of Jess’s work family and Sydney’s close relationship with her sister. I think that Jess and Sydney had a lot of chemistry and when they finally got together, it was a fun relief.

I would recommend this book to any reader of sapphic romance. It’s fun and quirky! A fast read for a cozy night.

P.S. “Slow burn” gets an asterisk because the book itself is fairly short but in the book itself it takes about 3/4 of the way for even a kiss to happen.

This is a book about straight girl falling for an another woman, but denying her true feelings. Jess struggling with her emotions of being gay is something which I myself can relate to, it’s not always an easy time, and I liked that this book didn’t take the straightforward route. I think the slow burn works with this particular type of story.

I felt that this book was really well written and in particular the dialogue was amazing, keeping me hooked throughout. Forsythe has a skill which engages the reader, and I really enjoy this authors this style of writing which flows. Forsythe also brought plenty of humour which had me laughing out loud. The chemistry and attraction between Jess and Sydney is instant and strong but does not come without complications! I was invested in every one of their interactions.

I liked both main characters, but at the same time they are both flawed and human. Sydney was easier to like right from the start, but I thought that Jess’s character development was excellent…at times she frustrated me, at times I sympathised with her, but she was on a journey and I always routed for her.
Let’s talk about the authors side characters. Side characters in books are often overlooked, or don’t bring much meaning, but they are pivotal to Forsythe’s stories. In any of her books I have read she gives us a world with interesting, lovable side characters (here we had Rachel and Ben, Chloe, Pam and Violet) and then she throws in a good villain to dislike too, in this case, Jess’s boyfriend.

Now something I don’t always love is miscommunication in books…but although there was some miscommunication between the two mains at times in this book, I thought that, in this case, it worked. It felt realistic and served the story well.

In summary, this was such a refreshing read…I thoroughly enjoyed The Roommate which I read in one day! I totally would recommend this book and this author has made it onto my ‘must read’ list. I am looking forward to the next book already!

I was completely addicted!

Jess is having the worst day when she meets Sydney who isn’t having the best day herself after a devastating break up with girlfriend. When Sydney isn’t there as they arranged to catch the train home, Jess resides herself to never seeing her again, until she turns up in hers and Chloe’s flat as their new roommate. And now everything is tense.

Firstly, this started with one of the cutest meetings I think I have ever come across and if life is really like this, I want to live there! From that first second of Jess and Sydney meeting I was invested in them, despite Austin, and the fact this was a chance meeting. I really felt for Jess though because Sydney had proved instantly that kindness doesn’t cost anything, which was most endearing, but Jess had Austin and worried about ending up like her parents keeping her secured in that relationship no matter what fleeting feelings she’d had about Sydney. While them meeting again was definitely fate at play, and heartbreaking in more than one ways for Sydney, it was Jess my heart went out to. We got to know a lot about her and her situation that helped to empathise with why she was fighting her feelings and attraction to Sydney so hard.

Jess and Sydney obviously weren’t alone in this story with Chloe, their roommate, and Austin caught up in their not-so-relationship. And the other family members that played a part in the story too, brought new and exciting elements to keep pushing Jess and Sydney together in the cutest of ways. They had this fantastic connection and there was no way they could just be friends, but if they’d had to I was sure they’d have found a way to make that work out and support on another.

Just a perfect, addictive romance that I couldn’t put down. It was cute, exciting, and packed with wonderful moments to make you believe in soul mates and true love.

Claire Forsythe’s last book, We met in a Bar, was only a three star read for me so I was a little hesitant going into this one. However, I decided to give it a shot because the blurb sounded super up my alley, and I am so glad I did! The Roommate has been one of my favorite books this year (and for someone who doesn’t watch tv you can assume I read a decent amount of books) so that’s saying something!

This story started off strong with a great meet cute between Jess and Sydney. Right away you could feel the sparkling chemistry between these two and it just grew throughout the book. Also I think the author made the right choice by making this story a slow burn. It really gave the longing between the two and the angst of the whole will they/won’t they time to marinate, and by the time the two did eventually get together it was electric!

The only reason I’m not giving this five stars was because a bit of Jess’s angst over if she wanted to stay with her douchecanoe of a boyfriend seemed a bit manufactured. Like, the relationship is so emotionally tepid that you haven’t had sex in months and yet you’re holding onto him like a gosh darn toddler in a tiara?!

Anywho, other than that this is a very good book that completely delivers on its premise and I highly recommend you read it while we impatiently wait for Ms. Forsythe’s next offering.

I received a copy of this ebook from NetGalley and the publisher and all opinions are my own.

(3.5 Stars) A sweet slow burn romance. Jess and Sydney meet on a train and it is instant chemistry. They chat and flirt and agree to meet up again but Sydney misses the train. Weeks later Jess is still thinking about the woman she met on the train. Jess has a fiancé, her boyfriend of eight years so her interest in perplexing to her. When she lets her best friend select their new roommate she is stunned when Sydney moves in. Sydney also hasn’t forgotten Jess but tries to respect her boundaries and relationship. But the attraction is still there.

I like that they can have outings as friends giving them time to know each other better. Side characters like Sydney’s sister and nephew are great. Jess has her salon owners who are giving their input as well. But the book reads slowly. Sydney respects Jess’s relationship so even though they are doing things together they aren’t flirting or upping the will they/won’t they tension. But otherwise I have no negatives other than Jess needs to communicate better. Which she learns to do. I also like how much everything is tied up by the ending.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the ebook and I am leaving an honest review.

Meeting on the train Jess Black and Sydney Fletcher didn’t know each other, complete strangers. But neither could forget the beautiful woman and even though they said they’d exchange phone numbers, time got away from them and the exchange never happened.
Jess really had no business getting anyone's number, she was in a relationship with her boyfriend of three years, and had never felt even remotely interested in women. But there was just something about Sydney, she couldn’t stop thinking of her.
Sydney had know way to contact the beautiful lady from the train so she tried to just forget. It was never meant to happen. But in the meantime she had to find another place to live. When an ad was looking for a third roommate she was excited. Great place to live but little did she know one of her new roommates was none other Jess.
Now they were under the same roof, trying to ignore each other but it’s hard to do in an apartment where things like kitchens were shared. Jess fights the attraction while Sydney could only hope Jess would really start noticing her. A really nice read.

This book is a cute romance story between Jess and Sydney, the characters do have a lot of chemistry, and the side characters are lovable (well…most of them.)

I will say, the main character (Jess) was frustrating. It’s understandable considering the fact that it’s explicitly told why she acts the way she does, however, it felt unfair to her love interest (Sydney) as well. It does an adequate portrayal of being confused by your sexuality, still that does not excuse a lot of the miscommunication the character brings. Additionally, I think it would’ve been great if we could’ve explored the main characters family dynamic a bit more than it just being mentioned here and there.

This is definitely a slow burn, and the spice level is an adequate 3/5! It’s a good book and I do recommend to give it a read, since it is cute and the banter is great!

The reason I gave it 4/5 stars is just the fact that most of the obstacles the characters faced was because it could’ve been resolved with just some communication.

Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for giving me this opportunity to read and review this book!

It started out really wonderfully and spontaneously on a train, but then it took a really long route to its destination.
A bit too long for me to be honest.
After a while there was simply no reason not to follow this attraction or give in to it.
However, Sydney has to suffer for a long time because Jess is reserved and unsure about dating a woman.
I didn't really understand why she kept the whole thing a secret from her best friend, even though she knew about the woman on the train.
Well, this meet-cute, very slow-burn romance is for anyone who likes to wait a long time for something really good.
Because it was good.
It was sweet and flirty and hot at the end.
Well written, but I had trouble warming to Jess.
Quite the opposite of Sydney and Chloe...but that's just me.
It was a nice love story.
Thanks to Bold Strokes Books and Netgalley and of course the Author for the Arc!

I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher Bold Strokes Books. All opinions are my own and are given freely.

I really enjoyed this book. As someone that is bisexual I found Jess’ struggle with her sexuality accurate, even if her character was annoying sometimes. It can sometimes be hard for individuals to come to terms with their own sexuality even if they are surrounded by positive queer people. So I liked the push and pull and internal struggle Jess went through. I thought the chemistry between Sydney and Jess was fantastic. I enjoyed the relationship building between them. Sydney was one of my favorite characters and offset some of the annoyances from Jess. I love a good queer romance and I thought this was super cute. I do wish Jess had wised up just a bit sooner.
