Promised to the Highlander

Rate this book
Nessia Stephenson's world was safe until a threat from a neighbouring clan forces her to accept a betrothal to a man whose family can offer her the protection she needs. The real threat lies in her intense attraction to the man who arranged the match—the clan's chief and her intended’s brother, Fergus MacKay.

When powerful warlord Fergus MacKay arranges a marriage for his younger brother, William, he has no idea the price will be his own heart. Fergus is captivated by the wildly beautiful Nessia, a woman he can never have.

When the feud between the MacKay and Sutherland clans escalates, Nessia, William, and Fergus all must make sacrifices for their future. Longing and loss, honour and duty. How can love triumph under such desperate circumstances?

If I could give this book infinite stars, I would. I read a beta version of this book (and will be buying it when it comes out!). Robbins has really outdone herself with this book. From the very first page you can't help but be hooked. The character of Fergus is exactly what you want in a Highland hero. Brave, brawny, and a little flawed. Because I don't want to give away any of this fabulous book, I'm not going to get into the details, but suffice it to say that this is a story that will hurt your heart. Fergus and Nessia certainly don't have an easy road, and Robbins takes us on their journey in heart-wrenching style. To say I loved this book is likely an understatement. Without a doubt the best medieval Highland historical romance I've had the pleasure of reading.

Promised to the Highlander by Kate Robbins is a first reads win and I am giving my honest opinion. This is another one of my favorite topics the Scottish Highlands. This tale begins with Fergus MacKay, s widower and chieftain of clan MacKay, giving his brother William an ultimatum to find a wife or he'll find him one. William ignores the order and finds himself to be betrothed to Nessia Thompson. It's a good match. However when Fergus meets Nessia he realizes she's the woman of his dreams. Sparks flow between them. William is a good, just and kind man. Nessia pushes Fergus from her mind and weds William. Fergus goes to the neighboring clan Mackenzie to make an alliance so he can attach Clan Sutherland. Sutherland's laird is an evil, mean man and he hates the MacKays. While he's away the MacDonald clan disguises themselves and destroys one of Mackenzie's villages. Laird MacIntosh watched the whole thing knowing Fergus is innocent. They go to the king and Fergus is put in prison while Macintosh vouches for him. While he's away, Sutherland captures William and tortures him to death. Nessia is beside herself. She takes poor William and washes his body and dresses him. She says Fergus is coming and won't let anyone take William's body from her.

It’s the rare book that sets its hooks so deeply I find it hard to put down and, even when I must, can’t get it out of my mind. Promised to the Highlander was such a book. Author Kate Robbins hooked me at the start and kept reeling me in page after page. I stayed up past my bedtime to find out what happened next and couldn’t wait to get back to it at the end of the day.

Promised to the Highlander tells the story of the frustrated love between Fergus MacKay and Nessia Stephenson, the bonny lass he’s arrange for his younger brother to wed. The instant they set eyes on one another, the chemistry is scorching. MacKay’s brother, William, is a good man neither would dream of betraying. Both do their duty, but the magnetism between them only grows. Shades of Tristan and Isolde, yes, but with a far more satisfying ending. (Not to mention, a nail-biting plot and deliciously detailed love scenes.)

Promised to the Highlander is Book Two in the Highland Chiefs series. Though I thoroughly enjoyed Book One, Bound to the Highlander, I found the sequel even more compelling. Well done, Kate Robbins!

The first 30-35% was so drawn out that I almost didn't finish the book. This story is about fergus whom we meet in book one... I really wish that it would have started off closer to where book 1 left off.. There was quit a bit if back tacking with the story... The last 60% was so good that I bumped it up to a 4 star read! I hope book 3 doesn't backtrack as much... Freya has got herself in a bit of a pickle.. What will happen?!

This is a spectacular read and recently released book two in (The Highland Chief Series)called *Promised To The The Highlander* by Kate Robbins who is a truly gifted author in my opinion.

This story is somewhat of a triangle. It starts off as there is feuding between clan's and for her own protection the heroine of this book Nessia Stephenson as her father Thomas and Laird Fergus Mackay the hero of this book, arranges a marriage between her and his younger brother William. As the couple who had both opposed this type of union as this was arranged sight unseen which is not unusual in an arranged marriage of this time period.

The first time they all meet Fergus feels as he has been kicked in the gut as the vision in his dreams has just become a reality! One big problem is that she is going to marry his brother William and not him.The other problem is Nessia only has eyes for her betroth's elder brother Fergus as well. So what a tangle we weave right from the beginning of this book! Fergus and Nessia are not aware what the other feels and yet William is quite aware, but thinks in time Nessia will learn to love him eventually. William is patient as he knows her true value and feels that she is worth the wait. Of course both Nessia and Fergus love William and both are honorable and will do their duty as neither would ever betray him either. Fergus does which is the only honorable thing he can, which is to leave the keep to get over his guilt and feelings for his brothers wife. Plus he needs to deal with ugly
Clan business with problems and enemies that always seem to be at his doorstep.

This book at times will squeeze your heart something fierce in some of the more tragic moments and I did shed quite a few tears during this read. Of course when I read a book that affects me to that level I know I am reading a special and spectacular book, that will stay with me long after I have finished the book. I simply couldn't put this book down! Yes, it was that wonderful and I highly recommend you read this fabulous book!

This book blew my socks off there is so much action, suspense, mystery, betrayal , unrequited love and of course love and what sacrifices honorable people will make not to betray the ones they love. A captivating spectacular story does not even begin to cover it. Also there is a story about William and Fergus sixteen year old sister Freya, and the mistakes she makes by falling in love with her bothers arch enemies son Ronan Sutherland. Freya MacKay and Ronan Sutherland will be the main characters in Ms. Robbins next book "Enemy of The Highlander", book three in The Highland Chef Series. I can't wait to read it!

Also check out "Bound to the Highlander" book one of The Highland Chief series. The book that started this fabulous series. You can read all the books as stand alone or in series order, a personal reader choice.

Kate Robbins is a truly gifted author and if you love Scottish historical romance like me you don't want to miss this fabulous book! I recommend you read the entire series as Ms. Robbins books are truly a joy to read! Alba Gu Bràth! ~ B

It all started with a look. Fergus Mackay arraigned a marriage with for his brother William and a neighbor, Nessia Stephenson. When Nessia and her family arrive at Clan Mackay it isn't William that she is looking at. And Fergus is just as much in trouble.

This story is a journey for Nessia and Fergus but also for Fergus' younger sister Freya. It's a story of love and what you would sacrifice for your family.

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for Freya!!

I was provided with a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for a review.
This is the first book I have read by Kate Robbins and all I could think about is WHY have I not found her before? This book is so amazing! I looked at other reviews and it was unanimous that this author and this book are amazing!
I adore books set in the Highlands of Scotland. It’s set in the time period of Stewart reign, so not as common as most Highland books which tend to focus on Robert Bruce and William Wallace. I found the historical plot points interesting and the clan way of life to be well explored.
The heroine Nessia is a treasure. She’s bold and strong and loyal. I totally enjoyed how she was developed as a character. The only challenge for me was that I couldn’t figure out how to pronounce her name accurately and it kind of irked me as I went along, but I appreciated that she wasn’t named something modern in order to make the story more palatable to current trends.
When we meet the hero and heroine they are immediately taken with each other. It’s that visceral pull between two people that is rare and breathtaking. Alas, she has been secured as a wife to Fergus’s younger brother William, who is very pleased with the match. I kept expecting the betrothal to be broken in order to get the romance going between Nessia and Fergus, but I was quite surprised that she did marry William. Immediately I though two things. One, William’s fate was not good. This is a romance novel and clearly Fergus is the hero, so something was going to happen to William. Second, this book was unusual in the fact that most romance novels don’t have the heroine marry someone else and have sex with them. So if you want a tale about virgins slaking their lust with the hero, this story is different than that common recipe.
However, Nessia’s lack of virginity allows for her and Fergus to explore each other without the hold up of maidenly qualms. He’s a brawny man who burns to be with her. Nessia can taste how passionate their encounters will be before he has even touched her. The sex scenes are really well done and very vivid. The book is not over run with smutty embraces, but their lovemaking ties together their relationship and the plot points.
Since there is clan warfare, we get to read about battles and alliances. This isn’t the usual description of practice with a claymore on the tiltyard, but real battles with subterfuge and intrigue. The enemy is evil and his treachery knows no bounds. The secondary characters enhance the plot and play pivotal roles in moving events along.
I still can’t believe I have never read one of Kate Robbins books before. This book is part of a series with more to come. I stayed up way past my bedtime, telling myself just a few more minutes to read, but in the end I couldn’t put it down until I knew how it ended. I was sure there would be a happy conclusion, but I just had to know!
I heartily recommend this book and author. I’m so happy I had the chance to discover her work and will definitely be reading more.

Promised to the Highlander by Kate Robbins is an OK story. It's just OK 'course it's lacking continuity and the timeline is all mixed up.

Nessia who is at the beginning an accomplished archer who brings home the best game at the end does not even remember to bring a dirk with her when she goes to rescue her love. It's like in that almost a year when she was away from home she had forgotten all she had ever learned and she has turned into an housewife who thinks like teenager who rushes to save a world with her bare hands. Although she loved William, her first husband, Fergus' brother, she is crazy about Fergus, but same time she keeps talking about her sweet William, even in her and Fergus' wedding bed.

Fergus is this powerful laird, who is always on a edge to go berserk, who is ready to jump to the worst conclusions always and who has newer loved his first wife and who one moment loves Nessia and other hates her and then again loves her.

Nessia and William where married some six months before he died, but nobody talks about Nessia's possible pregnancies, but after just one night with Fergus and already she thinks she might be carrying his child. And Fergus' sister Freia ... don't start me on that, be course the story of her love life and pregnancy is the most peculiar of all. Same goes with William's death, Fergus' incarceration ... they both rise so many questions and give no answer.

Do not get me wrong, the story was interesting, but it was filled with contradictions, unanswered questions, moments when I felt it's better to turn out my mind since it was insult to my intelligence. It could be much better story if the mishaps could be ironed out and unnecessary information could be removed or helpful information could be added. But it's just in my opinion, so others might like the story as it is, and they have every right too, just for me the story was interesting but not very good.

Nessia Stephenson is furious for her father has promised her in marriage to William, the younger brother of the MacKay family. Neither of the promised ones want this and when they finally meet both realize it could be a good marriage, except for one disastrous reality. For when William’s brother, Fergus, and Nessia set eyes on each other, there is a flash of overwhelming love in that first look. Both decide to do all in their power to avoid following through on that initial recognition of true love! Little do they realize, however, that very soon it is apparent to all but them. Such is the stuff of great passion born to last forever!
Because of an unforeseen tragedy, the Sutherland clan residing near to the MacKay clan are determined to make the MacKay brothers and their women suffer to death. A vow the Sutherlands make begins to be fulfilled. None know that one member of each clan have fallen in love and have vowed not to involve themselves in this useless, bitter feud between the families. The price to be paid will be higher than anyone involved can imagine!
The war degenerates to one group carrying the pennants of a different family, an act that could make the King so angry that he might issue a death penalty as a result. Off to war the men go and the women stay behind, worrying and weeping, each with an untold story and secrets they can tell no one.
As torture, death and conflict grow, so does a secret passion, with some ultra-sexy scenes that add to the palatable tension increasing with each turned page. No spoilers here; Kate Robbins has surpassed her last novel by miles. Great love coupled with great adventure and feisty female characters as well as brave men make Promised to the Highlander a terrific read! Everyone loves a great story, and this romantic and historical novel succeeds on every level! Very nicely done, Kate Robbins.

If I could give this more stars, I would.

Nessia Stephenson's suddenly needs protection against the Sutherland's, an enemy clan. Her father and the Laird of the McKay clan workout a betrothal agreement to protect her and her family. At first Nessia does not want to do this, but her father helps her understand that it is for the best. She must do her duty. To her own surprise, she is attracted immediately to Laird McKay, himself....oops......wrong groom. It is William McKay who is the intended groom, Laird McKay' s brother.

Oh my, when Fergus MacKay, Laird of the McKay' s arranges this betrothal for his brother William, William digs his heels in. No way, no how. Fergus convinces him though, but this Highland Laird is in deep emotional turmoil. As soon as he sees his brother's future wife, every sensation in him is alert and at attention.

The Sutherland' s reek havoc and Nessia, William, and Fergus are in for the ride of their lives. How will this all workout?

This journey is so emotional and passionate. Moments of laughter, suspense, sorrow and sizzling chemistry. You are on high alert the entire journey.

Kate Robbins is such a talented author. The quality of work she puts out is amazing. I look forward to her next book in this series. Her love scenes do not disappoint and neither does the adventure she takes you on. This was a gift for me and I truly loved it. I highly recommend this book if you love sizzling great highland stories. Be prepared to feel!

Kate Robbins has written another booming medieval Scottish historical. If you are tired of empire waists and London ballrooms, this book is probably your thing. The story abounds with strong raw emotion between a fierce hero, Fergus MacKay, and the passionate Nessia Stephenson, and the obstacles they must overcome--including distrust, an arranged marriage and a terrifying enemy bent on Fergus' destruction.

The story gets off to a stronger start than her first, Bound to the Highlander, and brings the reader right in to the matters at hand in the first chapter. I love how the elements of this story interweave with the first, and it gave the entire world that the author created -- one she clearly loves -- a nice depth. Strong hints of the third book are here as well, which I'm looking forward too perhaps most of all, and creates a wonderful tapestry (or perhaps I should say 'plaid') that really draws the reader in.

I cannot wait until the third book in this series - it's been nicely set up and I hope it pays off :)

Promised to the Highlander by Kate Robbins

Great book, well actually great doesn’t cover it quite right. I hate using awesome all the time and wonderful is not enough. I can say without a doubt that, if you read this book you will want to go and get the first book. It starts out with a betrothal that neither the man nor female are happy about. When you read this book, just start off knowing you will get upset, then you go into fits of anger and happy. You are like telling the book, “NO” this will not do. Then turns into sadness and you’re saying, omg no. Even though, you were against it beforehand. You can’t figure out how it will end and when the end finally comes, it hits you right where you want to be. That, things worked as they did. You’re happy, because your thoughts were being transported into Kate’s mind when she was writing this book. It was almost like she was reading your thoughts. This has everything you want in one book.

When the dark Sutherland clan leader declares open hostility on the MacKays and all of their supporters, Nessia Stephenson finds herself in grave danger. Her father brokers a marriage that will protect her from the marauders with the MacKay himself. But when Nessia comes into his household as his brother’s wife, the MacKay is faced with a force unlike any he’s ever experienced. Nessia is his dream woman come to life, and Nessia seems as much a slave to the erotic force that pulls them together as he.

The forbidden love is always an intriguing theme. While the plot here was not the most original (I guessed the conclusion long before I read it on the page), I was still happy to read this delightful book. The historical elements and the highland charm create a wonderfully romantic tableau in which it is believable for the Nessia and the MacKay to fall in love. With just enough pain and tension to give you a sense of triumph in the end, this is a nice nightstand book before bed.

Nessia was a strong willed woman who could hunt with the best. When she found out that she was betrothed to McKay Clan she was mad as a hornet. Once she met the leader however she fell in love. Too bad she was promised to his brother. Now she must marry the wrong man and help save the clan from another clan wanting to destroy it.

This was a well written novel. The author did a wonderful job of laying out the plot and doing a good job of following through. The love scenes were HOT.

The way the author wrote the characters was fantastic. The heroin was strong and yet showed her vulnerable side so that Fergus could complement her and fill in her weaknesses. Excellent writing. The plot was predicatable but that did not take away from enjoying it.

Fun romp in the Highlands

Fergus MacKay knows he must strengthen the clan and his own lineage, in particular. In the time-honored tradition of the Highlands, Fergus marries off his younger brother to a lady in need of protection from the neighboring chieftain. Despite an immediate attraction to Nessia, Fergus allows the marriage to proceed. Then, when the rival chieftain attacks while Fergus is away for business, the brother must lead the clan, and he ultimately suffers torture and death. A distraught Nessia refuses to bury her beloved young husband until Fergus returns. Eventually, sparks rekindle, but will the tender flame of love ignite or be squelched by further intrigue among the Highland chieftains?

Two independent thinkers have their worlds collide out of necessity.

There is the possibility of war. And the influence of the King in the Scottish Highlands.

Honor. Trust. Love. These values are held dear to the heroine Nessa and she obeys her duty as a loyal daughter married off to prevent ruin.

What happens next is a complicated journey to find love in a land harried by storms and uncertainty.

Beautiful setting and amazing characters. Fergus is a hero I fell in love with and you will, too.

Enjoyable fast paced read

Very good story. I would have given it 5 stars, except there is a scene where a character is trapped, and throws a knife into his son's shoulder. Then a blade is thrust into his heart . Next paragraph, the same scene, only he throws a knife into the shoulder of the main female character, and then his throat is slit.seems the author wrote two versions, and both were included.I'm sure that wasn't her intent. It won't stop me from reading the next book, because it was still a great story.

If you are a fan of historical romances then this is most definitely the book for you. This is the second book in the set and I will most definitely be reading all the other books. The characters were strong and I absolutely loved the historical background to the story. Based on this book, I would most definitely recommend this series to anyone.

A fun Highlander romance that kept me flipping the (digital) pages. I liked that the author didn't write a carbon copy of the first book's characters and situations, but instead gave us new protagonists with their own engaging personalities and had them face their own unique challenges.

Deliciously enthralling!!!

This series just keeps getting better - action, warring emotions, magnetically charged musings, dampened sensual  yearnings and passionate encounters as well as touching sentiment and that's just in the first chapters. It's intense, frustrating (in a stomach-churningly good kind of way) and addictively engrossing.
Dark sinister plots, lurking danger, pain of loss, betrayal and a forbidden love that although desperately pushed aside, refuses to lay dormant, be denied or extinguished.
The chemistry between Fergus and Nessia is heart-meltingly tender, instantly electric and all consuming yet at first needs to be heartachingly denied due to a promise of duty and brotherly love.
Instantly drawn to Fergus from the first glimpse of him as a boy on the cusp of manhood and in ore of his strength even if he appears pigheaded at times. Fergus, the MacKay, is strong, fiercely loyal and deeply caring with the weight and future of his whole clan on his broad capable shoulders and the worry of long standing feuds, drenched in years of hatrid and suffering, escalating to unspeakable heights at any moment. Nessia an alluring mixture of strength, intelligence, virtue, innocence and fire is the perfect match for Fergus and his need for a partner strong enough to understand the uncertainity and precarious life of a warrior and Clan chief.
This tale runs parallel, overlaps and remains closely linked to book 1 yet it is not neccessary to have read this first in order to enjoy this book but I highly recommend you do. Reading the series in order adds potency to events that occur and a deeper understanding and insight into Fergus and provides a way of fully appreciating the uncertainity of the time. In addition, the further intrigue involved in a subplot regarding Fergus' feisty and strongheaded sister, Freya, adds a deeper layer of intrigue, torn confusion and heartache as her story starts here but links and seemlessly flows into the next chapter book 3.
A rather wonderful array of twists and turns that keeps you truly invested in the leads' fates and that of those they touch upon.  Onto book 3 as it forcibily calls and entices me back to the wildly beautiful and alluring hills of Scotland and into it's dark, harsh and politically unstable depths!!! Rather wonderful!!!

Is happiness just a dream

Can a beast ever find a woman strong enough to love him or will he spend eternity with only the angel in his dream. Sent to marry a wonderful man, but what do you do when you find that your heart belongs to another. Your duty is what you do. Fergus is the chief and has a duty to his family and his clan. Nessia is a beauty never wishing to marry. But when she is betrothed to the chiefs brother she will do her duty. But what neither Nessia nor Fergus ever foresaw was finding the other half of their heart the first time they look into each other's eye. But honor and duty come first, how will they stand it see each other everyday knowing that Nessia belongs to another. The knows what it wants but the head must rule when duty calls.

There are a lot of moving parts

In this series you have characters from all the clans that become integral parts of the story. I like how each book is interconnected, yet stand alone. Fetus and Nessia were made to be together, it's noticed from the first meeting. But duty and loyalty must come first.
Is it meant to be, will she marry who she wants or duty bound. Then what? Fergus as clan chief must not stand in the way but aside to let the Fates play out. Lots of love and loss, fear and bravery and a few sexy scenes.
