Keith Ramsbottom: The Emperor Strikes Back

Rate this book
AD 60. Rome is unhappy with the work of Paulinus, Governor of Southern Britannia and sends an Envoy to keep an eye on him. To distract the masses, Paulinus plans some gladiatorial games but unfortunately, the most dangerous animal to throw people to is one flea-bitten badger.
To complicate matters, the Envoy takes rather a shine to Pulchritude, a local girl and key member of rebel group SORE, and suggests marriage- well, she is nearly 14. The marriage is set to take place after the games and rumours are rife about a special guest, a real fire-breathing dragon- Paulinus’ wife Flavia.
It is time for Keith Ramsbottom, leader of SORE and his clueless side-kick Horace, to come up with a plan to save the day. All they have to do is learn how to be ruthless gladiators in the space of a few days. The clock is ticking. At least, it would if someone would only hurry up and invent it.

Hi there Pixellites,

I’m a moderately-disturbed Brit. I’ve had seven books of non-fiction published with three different publishers under another name.
Luke I am Your Father is a humorous look at unplanned pregnancy, the main character in Gothic Girl 'goes goth' as a way to cope with pressures at home and school and Live Long and Prospero features a bunch of lunatics on a lighthouse facing automation. Rainbow is about a cow that can predict soccer scores and Gagfest UK is about stand-up comedy and a heckler who takes things too far. These books are not part of a series.
The Pixelloverse is currently expanding in a number of different and exciting directions. I've added parody self-help (The A-Z of Kids, Parts I & II), Biblical parody (Jesus: The Wilderness Years), a novel about Shakespeare, a school for geniuses (Smart School) and an ongoing series set in Roman-occupied Britain in AD 60, named after the hero, a would-be rebel without a toga: Keith Ramsbottom.
I love writing (and reading) but hate the self-promotion part of being a writer. I am painfully shy, don’t tweet and there are no pictures of me on the Net. I don’t even have a mobile phone (shock horror!). I do have a Facebook page (see www.facebook.com/scott.pixello).

I’m not a total hermit but for me, the words are the key things, not who produces them. I long to give up my day-job and write full time but for that I need to generate more sales online, which means readers, like you, need to spend some (but not much) of your hard-earned pocket money on Pixello products. I'm trying to write books that could not be written by anyone else. And maybe shouldn't be. I plan to release about three books a year until I run out of ideas, which sadly could be some time (I’ve got about 12 manuscripts at various stages of readiness). Watch the skies.

Keith Ramsbottom (Episode II): The Emperor Strikes Back by Scott Pixello is the second book in the series and one that will continue to have you laughing out loud through many of the chapters.

This second book starts right where the first one leaves off. Keith and his friends, Horace and Pulchritude are still members of SORE and still have meetings in their clubhouse until someone (Horace) burns it down by accident. No matter, after their clubhouse is gone, the kids meet up in different places to keep the Romans guessing.

Near the beginning of this continuing story, the governor Paulinus is suspicious of the kids and is keeping a close eye on them. But, Paulinus is being watched as well. The emperor is not happy with Paulinas and sends an envoy to monitor his government. When the envoy takes a keen interest in Pulchritude for his bride, Keith and Horace must do everything in their power to stop the wedding - including pretending to be gladiators. Hilarious moments ensue. Will the boys be able to save Pulchitrude from the envoy? Will the boys survive the gladiator games? Read it to find out - no spoilers here.

The wry humor and the play on words throughout kept me laughing all the way to the end of the book. Definitely glad that I purchased this second book and am looking forward to the next one in the series.

Keep on writing, Mr. Pixello, this series is wonderful and extremely entertaining!
