With over six million books in print worldwide, Robert Jordan is an international bestselling sensation. Yet even the most rabid Jordan fans don't know that the blockbuster talent behind The Path of Daggers is also one of the finest storytellers to take on the Old West. Written under the name Jackson O' Reilly, Cheyenne Raiders is a stunning tale of the bravery, and discovery of love in the time of war.
Yale-educated Thomas McCabe accepts a position with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and is soon sent to live among a nomadic tribe in the wilds of Missouri. After saving the life of a young brave, Thomas is grudgingly accepted by the Cheyenne-until he falls hopelessly in love with the beautiful Night Bird Woman. Determined to marry the girl he has seen all his life in his dreams, Thomas must first prove himself by passing the excruciatingly painful and spiritually breathtaking Test of Fire. It is through this initiation that he is visited by a Spirit Vision, one that carries a message powerful enough not only to teach Thomas the true meaning of courage, but to remake the lives of the proud-and imperiled-people he will come to call family.

I thoroughly enjoyed this serious historical drama in the vein of Man Called Horse or Dances With Wolves.

So, written long before the Wheel of Time books. And a western. Just not very good. I gave it 40 pages, but that was plenty. Skip this one.

Pretty decent read but you can tell it’s early work.

Definitely very enjoyable. Now I see where Robert Jordan got so many of his ideas for the culture of the Aiel people in the Wheel of Time series. Should have realized that previously.

Cheyenne Raiders by Jackson O'Reilly is a western romance. The book is set in the year 1837 in the plains of North America. The main character is Thomas McCabe a young man from the eastern US who takes on a job from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to investigate the Cheyenne tribe. However as McCabe is not as corrupt as many of those who worked for that agency were he tries to do more good with his actions. His good heart however leads him into trouble when he falls in love with a young Cheyenne woman named Night Bird Woman. Soon he has gone native in his efforts first to win her hand and then to keep her and her tribe safe. However the man he displaced abhors him and fights to get even with him by any means necessary. I had a few thoughts while reading this book besides just the tragic main storyline. First was that McCabe's Christianity bears much more in common with O'Reilly's own masonic views than with anything I would label mainstream Christianity. Second that in order for love to last one must be willing to give and receive from the beloved when things don't always go right. I enjoyed the story even if I wish it were not so tragic. Reading it helps me see the early work which led to Jackson O'Reilly aka Robert Jordan becoming one of fantasies most prolific authors.

The details of customs of the Cheyenne people come to life in this tale. The story line is compelling. It's a pretty eash read, so if you're in the mood for something light, it's a good choice.

One of my first ventures into historical fiction. This is a great story. It was also my first Robert Jordan book besides the Wheel of Time series. I recommend this book.

It's always a wonderful thing to find a story that will keep me guessing and stressing until the very end.
