When May becomes a lady’s maid at sea, she’s hoping for an innocent adventure but instead must navigate rough waters, deadly combat, and unexpected love.
Mediterranean Sea, 1811
May Byam grew up following her father to his work at the ropemaking factory and listening to her uncle’s tales of life aboard a Royal Navy ship. After tragedy and scandal shatter her family, May is desperate to escape the shame that follows her. Despite her mother’s pleadings against it, May signs on as a lady’s maid to the young wife of a naval captain. If she’s going to run, she may as well do it in honor of her late uncle and cousin and where there is food, shelter, and perhaps even adventure. But the frosty reception she receives from the ship’s clergyman makes her feel far from welcome.
Heartbroken young Chaplain Elias Doswell returns to a harsh life at sea, but preaching to disinterested sailors isn’t the escape he’d hoped for—until a captivating young woman boards the ship. However, a case of mistaken identity ensures that he starts off on the wrong foot with the newly hired lady’s maid, who clearly wants nothing to do with him. But the close quarters of the ship forces the pair together, and May begins to see a side of the handsome clergyman she didn’t expect. As they struggle to navigate their deepening feelings, the danger of war with the French looms on the horizon, threatening their lives—and their love.
This romance on the high seas had me giggling and kicking my feet the whole time, May and Elias were SO adorable. That scene where he was taking care of her hair? My life was forever changed.
Across the Star-Kissed Sea is a sequel to Georgana's Secret, and if you haven't read that, you're missing out!! You could read it after this though, because it works as a standalone as well.
It was great seeing some old faces, and meeting new ones too. The storyline was gripping as always, and had me perking my ears up at certain moments that were just so juicy (read: drama-filled), I couldn't stop listening. Speaking of, I think the narrators we got were excellent and my faves out of all the books I listened to so far.
I was gonna say the research is superb, the battle scenes exiting, the writing magical etc, but you already know all of that, it's an Arlem Hawks book, of course everything is perfect.
I'm really obsessed with this world, so Arlem Hawks, I'm going to need you to keep writing sequel after sequel featuring all of your characters, and never stop, okay? Deal.
This is something I rarely say, but I am so glad the author wrote this companion novel.
First thing's first, this book is a companion novel to Georgana's Secret and I would highly recommend reading it first, however, you don't have to. A lot of the characters from Georgana's Secret made an appearance and have a large impact on the MC's arc. Next up is the character development. I thought the author did a fantastic job with the MC having growth throughout the story. She did not instantly become perfect, as she still had to stop and realize that she was falling back into bad habits as shown in the quote below:
Quote: Rung after rung, I descended toward the mess deck, the sun's encompassing light giving way to scattered lantern light broken by trenches of deep shadow. My narrow view of the past was marred by so many shadows, where the light of my understanding could not reach. Darkened by prejudice and grief, I hadn't cared to hold a light up to examine what might lay beyond the edges of my perception when I'd first boarded. Mr. Doswell had made me reconsider. In the light of his goodness, I'd been forced to examine my first impression of him and found someone tender and lovely and accepting. The longer I stood in his light, the more I realized the world was different form my limited understanding.
As expected with this author, the action scenes were great and exciting. I just wish I could go back and reread this book for the first time.

When it comes to maritime stories of the historical variety, Arlem Hawks definitely excels! She definitely does her research and I enjoy reading her books and coming away having learned something new.
Across the Star Kissed Sea is a companion novel to Georgiana's Secret, a book I read some years ago and really loved. While both can be read as stand-alones, I highly recommend reading in order for the best immersive experience and to fully enjoy those character cameos.
When a young woman runs away on a ship to escape her current circumstances, she has an unfortunate interaction with the ship's chaplain that might lead to more than she first bargained for.
Their slow interactions lead them from reluctant shipmates, to friends to so much more. I really loved Elias' sweet temperament and his ability to be vulnerable for those he loves. May had a passion for what she believed in and a courage to do things even when they were hard. The fun, adventurous sea setting, with an action packed plot only made it more entertaining to read.
A lovely quick read that will appeal to many a reader, especially those who love sweet historical romance!
I loved this high-sea Regency Romance! Arlem Hawks’s knowledge of ships and life at sea is obvious, and I made me feel like I was there. I loved May’s fiery spirit and Elias’s steadiness of spirit. I highly recommend this book!
I love a good story set out on the sea and this was another amazing book from Arlem Hawks. I enjoy her historical stories so much and she’s a must read author in this genre.
I adored May and Elias. I loved that May had to work through a complicated past and learn from mistakes and she grew and took in new information about life aboard a boat. And sweet Elias who wanted to be loved for him. All of the soft and quiet things he did for May had me melting.
And getting to see the Peyton’s too!! I’m so happy they were included in this story and I loved being back on this ship. It’s a short and heartfelt romance. Y’all know I’m a fan of forced proximity and maybe that’s why I loved ocean stories so much?? They get to be together all the time and you get to see a genuine slow burn romance bloom in the best ways. Combined with action and the thrill of wondering what ship was on the horizon this isn’t a book to be missed.
Overall audience notes: - Historical Romance - Language: none - Romance: kisses - Violence: moderate - Content Warnings: life threatening injuries, skirmishes on a boat, loss of life
Georgana’s Secret which is the first book in this series is one of my all time favorite books and I so I was so excited for be able to ARC the second book in the series Across the Star-kissed Sea.
Arlem Hawks definitely did not disappoint! This was one where I could not put it down until I finished it and did so in just a day.
I love that we quickly get pulled into the story and you connect with the characters quickly.
The FMC May is quirky, feisty, and speaks her mind. I love that they start off as a bit of enemies and that at first she doesn’t want to give Elias any notice. I love that she hasn’t had an easy life and that she has to go through a journey of forgiveness for others and as well as asking forgiveness from others.
Then you have the MMC Elias. A Chaplain on a navy warship who is about as opposite from May as you can get. He is soft spoken, kind to a fault, and trying so hard to outrun his nightmares from past battles. He also is trying to move past heartbreak and I love how May gives him a reason to try again.
It was also great to see the previous couple from Georgana’s Secret all through this book and see more of the other side characters as well.
I cannot love this book more and adored every page! I also love that this one was written in dual first person POV which was a first for Arlem and she nailed it!
Favorite Moments: The Bonnet Tending to May’s Hair The first kiss The proposal
Quotes:
“What would it be like to have someone kiss you as the world tuned against you? Someone to draw courage from when faced with the unthinkable?’
“…I hadn’t thought on the comfort of having someone to confide in, someone to share your hopes and sorrows. How much easier to recover from a night of fear and anxiety like tonight knowing you had someone not far away. In body and in mind.”
“You need not be afraid, May.” I’d protect her with everything I had. Loneliness, abandonment, betrayal-these were both part of our pasts. They wouldn’t be any longer.”
Physical Intimacy Level 2 (Non descriptive longer kisses) Zero Swearing
“Across the Star Kissed Sea” is a clean historical fiction/regency. This was a sweet read. I did not read the first book, “Georgana’s Secret”, but it was easy to follow and could be read as a stand alone novel. I enjoyed the at sea setting and learning how life is living on the ship. I don’t know if I could ever live on the ship just because of how sick I would get, but I guess eventually you become used to it. May and Elias were quite entertaining as we see their friendship become more, especially since they don’t start off as friends and take some time to befriend another. I loved their sweet moments together like the new bonnet that is made and the peaches that were left for her. I really like some of the side characters, Mr and Mrs Peyton and seeing their relationship.I enjoyed this book and the adventure at sea.
I was given a copy of this book . I was not required to write a review.
This was a really sweet sequel to Georgana's Secret. 🩷 I loved visiting all the people again, but getting to see it all from May and Elias's point of view. The navy life seems so harsh, so cruel and devastating, all the loss and fears, but it's so inspiring and encouraging to see how tough they all are, pushing through it and loving anyway, embracing life, loving their life just as much as someone with an easy life.
May and Elias had so much devotion to each other, and their sweet bantering and romance was the best. 🩷 I loved how Elias would fumble around with his words and actions and May would always just love him and go along with it. 😅
If you like a clean, regency book full of navy hardship and a beautiful inspiring story, then check this one out! 🩷
*I received a paperback copy for review, all opinions are my own
This historical romance fiction shone brightly, illuminating the resilience of the human spirit. Two souls, once battered by life, rose above their fears. I anxiously supported their journey, praying they'd find the courage to love unconditionally. A beautifully crafted, emotionally charged love story that left me hopeful. I wholeheartedly recommend it to my historical fiction friends. Thanks Shadow Mountain via NetGalley.
I’m a big Arlem Hawks fan, as she always captures the good, bad, ugly, and sweet of historical times. With obvious thorough research and beloved characters, I’m charmed every time I meet one of her books.
I’ve only been on a cruise once and as exciting as it sounds to live on the seas for a time, there are many dangers and inconveniences to be had and I think I’m good with the comforts a cruise ship has to offer.
May Byam is desperate to escape a family scandal and becomes a lady’s maid on the high seas, on a ship full of mostly men. Chaplain Elias Doswell returns to sea, nursing his broken heart and trying to find a place to fit in. Immediate impressions aren’t favorable and situations aren’t ideal, but I quickly fell for this duo.
With a war looming, there are moments of perilous dangers and death, and life on the ship is vividly portrayed, but it's the characters and all the many connections and facets that completed my satisfaction with this beautiful Regency tale. Let me just say–I was deeply invested!
I couldn’t get enough of this story. It’s a lovely companion to Georgiana’s Secret and I loved my reading escape.
Content: mild romance; talk of dangers/perils/death; mild+ religion

There is something special about the way this author brings her characters and the setting to life! In the first few chapters I instantly connected with May and Elias, their struggles and vulnerabilities. They are each unsure about what their future will bring, but move forward despite their circumstances. There is so much character growth on their journey at sea. May is such a cactus, and Elias a cowardly lion. I loved seeing them go from horrible first impressions to friendship to more. They discovered important things about themselves and life as the story progressed with the turmoil of the voyage and the danger of war. Highly recommend to fans of sweet Regency romance outside of the ballroom.

desperate to escape her circumstances, may decides to become a shipboard lady's maid. elias, too, wants to escape his recurring heartbreak, so he heads back to life at sea as a chaplain. on the ship, an initial misunderstanding sparks some animosity between the two, but with time, perhaps this first impression can be overcome...
the romance that develops between may and elias in across the star-kissed sea proves to be a sweet one. both of them have scars from the past that impact their interactions aboard the ship, and it's heartwarming to follow their growth amidst the day-to-day challenges, drama, and adventure. it's great, too, to see the pair alongside characters from georgana's secret—i always love the chance to revisit familiar characters and their "happily ever after," especially as they add value to the new romance.
if you want sweet romance and shipboard adventure, definitely pick up across the star-kissed sea! i enjoyed it, and i'm sure that other historical-romance readers will, too.
(i received a complimentary copy from the publisher. i was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions i have expressed are my own.)
considerations: —language: none —spice: kisses only —faith: he's a chaplain —content: shipboard combat, death
I was so excited for this book, and fully expected to enjoy it as much as the first one in this series. I did not. The main female character was so self absorbed and immature. There were so many opportunities May could have taken to have conversations to understand the other characters but she chose to play the victim and assume the whole world was out to get her. I was ready to strangle her and throw her overboard myself. The main male character was so sweet and was way too good for her, and deserved so much better lol. First book I haven’t enjoyed by Arlem, I just hated May and found her so annoying that that it wasn’t enjoyable.
Devastated to only give this 3 stars after Breton Shore, but I didn't like the FMC or the MMC's personalities and the chemistry was basically nonexistent. Maybe she used up all her stores of tension with Maxence and Armelle 😩
-Rich history. I loved learning so much about life on board a Royal Navy warship during the Napoleonic era. -Writing that flowed. It was a pleasure to read. -Great character growth. I loved how May and Elias both grew and overcame weaknesses and flaws. -Consistent characterization. I didn't always love the choices made by primary and secondary characters, but it always fit with who they were and what was most important to them. -It was also fun to see characters from some of Arlem's other books appear in this one. This one could be read as a stand-alone book, but I think it's better after reading Georgana's Secret and Beyond the Lavender Fields. (The ties are stronger with Georgana's Secret than with Lavender Fields, but for chronological order, go with Lavender Fields first.)
This new historical romance whisks us back to the high seas as a young woman takes a risk and signs on as a lady’s maid aboard a Navy ship and has an unfortunate first interaction with the ship’s chaplain.
Although it can be read as a standalone it is a follow up to Georgana’s Secret (which I definitely recommend as well!) It was really neat to have familiar characters woven throughout this story and the prior knowledge felt like it added extra depth to the story.
This author’s books are always impeccably researched and have plenty of heart and this was no exception. I love a high seas setting and all the forced proximity and adventure it adds to a storyline and the author always nails that setting as well. There are great elements of character development as the characters try to overcome difficulties from their pasts while opening their hearts to new possibilities.
Trigger/content warnings: very light elements of ship combat (not detailed), grief. Steam level is kissing.
I loved it. Another fantastic novel by Arlem Hawkes. It had everything I needed. I loved the ties back to the first book Georgana’s Secret too.
Two unlikely people find themselves aboard the Marianne running from something. After a botched first meeting it takes time for them to come to understand each other but that doesn’t stop sparks from flying in the meantime.
Be still my heart. The romance in this book is so tender. The main characters are two deeply feeling people and I loved rooting for them.
Hawkes’ battle scenes always have me so invested. I’m picking up each piece and hoarding it. The detail, the action, the DANGER.
I love a good character arc and I felt we got so many good ones in this novel. Including those of old beloved characters.
The sweet, reserved MMC is underdone, in my opinion. I love that Arlem created this character who was so easy to love and appreciate his journey of growth. As always, I appreciate that we get the naval scene of regency England, not the typical ballroom or house party (which I do love!), but an adventure out at sea. This time our FMC isn’t having to hide her gender (loved Georgana!) and she has quite the strong opinions. The sweet love between these two ♥️ absolutely loved them. If you’re looking for a sweet regency romance, snatch this one up.
Oh my goodness, this book is absolute joy. Elias was such a sweetheart—his gentle nature paired with his insecurities and red hair made him so endearing, and I loved the charming detail of his spectacles. May, the fiery FMC, was a perfect contrast. Her sharp tongue and inability to hold back her temper made her personality pop off the page. I couldn’t get enough of her!
It was refreshing to step out of the ballroom and back onto a ship, diving into the captivating world Hawkes has created. Revisiting Captain Payton and Georgana was so fun; they’ll forever have a special place in my heart. I loved participating in Georgana’s schemes and witnessing her adventurous spirit again. The overarching message of not making judgments about people without knowing their full story was beautifully woven into the plot.
This book is a wonderful sequel to Georgana’s Secret. AND seeing Giles again was such a treat. I highly recommend this heartwarming story!
Across the Star-Kissed Sea captured my attention from the awkward first meeting to the nail-biting conclusion! I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel to Georgana’s secret. Arlem Hawks is known for her meticulous research, swoony romance, and heartfelt characters which all come shining through in this latest book. I loved May & Elias & their sweet enemies to more, close proximity, he falls first romance!
May Byam’s family is struggling after deaths & scandal upended their world. May takes a position as the lady’s maid to a young sea captain’s wife on board the HMS Marianne, despite her mother’s & aunt’s pleas not to go. May wants the adventure, the security, & to avenge her uncle’s & cousin’s deaths. But, her awkward first meeting with the ship’s clergyman gets things off on the wrong foot.
Chaplain Elias Doswell’s suffering from his latest broken heart & returns to the sea. When he sees a beautiful woman boarding, he unfortunately misjudges her & her reason for being on the ship. Though he’s attracted to her & tries to make her stay on the ship more pleasant, he first has to gain her good opinion. As they spend more & more time together, their relationship begins to change, but with war threatening the seas, will their love survive?
I adored Elias! Though he appears the stuffy, well dressed gentleman, he has a deep, caring heart. His thoughtful gestures tugged on my heartstrings. I also loved the way he rehearsed his sermons. His wounded past as well as the horrors from previous battles come roaring back as they face the French.
May is Elias’ complete opposite. She’s feisty, headstrong, & not afraid to speak her mind. Though she struggles with forgiveness & hurt pride she also loves fiercely & is willing to do anything to protect those she cares for.
The story takes place almost entirely on ship & I loved experiencing the ups & downs, dangers, & close proximity this setting affords. I loved seeing the Peytons again! Georgana’s Secret is a favorite & enjoyed the significant roles they played in this book. Though this is a proper Regency romance, there are the realities of war & dangers of the sea present. It’s a heart achingly lovely story full of romance, forgiveness, & gorgeously written scenes that will leave a lasting impression.
Highly recommend to Regency & historical romance fans! Though it’s a sequel to Georgana’s Secret, it can easily be read as a standalone but is more enjoyable if you’ve read the previous book. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.
3.5 stars rounded down. The main girl drove me crazy. I hated how brash and single minded she was. That said, at least she knew she was and she was trying to be better. The story itself was good, nothing too special or intense .
I absolutely adored Elias Doswell. He has definitely got to be one of my all time favorite heroes from a romance novel. If I could change one thing about him, it would be to lessen the number of proposals he had previously made. The rather high number makes it seem as if he just wants to be in love with anyone regardless of who that someone might be. But when I try to overlook this detail, he is adorably generous, caring, and courageous. May was an excellent character as well, although she does make some rather large blunders that irked me quite a bit. I thought about lowering my rating due to her immaturity and rashness. But in the end I felt that if Elias and the Peytons could forgive her, then I could too. This book is ultimately a book about forgiveness so it felt wrong to hold onto her offenses after she had tried to rectify them.
I definitely plan to read more from this author…I think she did a wonderful job of portraying love and forgiveness in this story. It was quite a gripping book! Definitely teared up a few times.
I told myself I wouldn’t do it, and then I went and did it, and read the sequel. Why?!? This took me forever to read. The author does a very good job creating a super interesting story but in both of her books that I’ve read, one of the main characters has literally no personality at all. Elias was the issue in this book. I needed more from him. Do better Elias. 2.5 stars
-Dual POV -Takes place mostly at sea -Characters with flaws and baggage -FMC that has a lot of character growth -Cinnamon roll MMC, you can't help but root for him
This is my first book by this author. This was the sequel to Georgana's Secret which I would like to read. I was still able to enjoy this book without having read that one but it would be fun to read Dominic and Georgana's story.
Absoluely stunning. This is a sequel to Georgiana's Secret, but as someone who has bought the book but hasn't read it yet (I know, I know...I need to read it!) I loved every second of it and still followed the story without knowing what happened previously.
The romance was amazing! I loved reading about Elias' inner thoughts as he fell for May, and his inner turmoil as he determined how to move forward in his love for May. And the first kiss, be still my heart! It was so precious and the perfect way to show off some of the amazing things you can see on an ocean.
The setting of the Marianne (naval ship sailing on the ocean) fascinated me. From the perilous sea storms, the tight order the captain had to maintain with his crew, and the creative moments to steal away some romance, it made for an interesting read.
Thank you to the publisher for the advance copy of this book. I also purchased the audiobook because the book was that good. A review was not required.
Across the Star-Kissed Sea is perfect for readers who enjoy historical romance with a unique setting, a dose of history, and complex characters. Arlem Hawks hits all these and more in this story set on the sea (and I learned I’m very glad I didn’t live at sea in that era!). I didn’t connect with the two main characters as much as I have with others in Hawks’ books, but I loved seeing familiar faces and getting even more excited for future stories. This is one to add to your TBR! 3.5/5 stars
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
You can say whatever you want about this book, one thing is certain: the title and cover are just gorgeous. These, and the fact that I loved Arlem Hawks's previous books, made me grab this book as soon as I saw it.
Sadly, it fell a little short of my expectations. I had really enjoyed "Georgana's Secret", the first book in this series, so I hoped this one would be as good. I rather liked the way Elias Doswell, the chaplain, was portrayed here: a blushing, blustering young gentleman who feels rather cowardly due to PTSD. That's a rather unusual combination for a character, especially for a man, so I found it very refreshing. His love interest, May Byam, also had a rather unexpected personality: very fiery, she didn't let anyone walk over her, and could even be hurtful towards others when she was angry and hurt — not your typical damsel! Unfortunately, I found that her personality grated on me and there was little character development, or at least her change of heart was a bit abrupt and rather unrealistic. I understand how both characters' personalities could theoretically complement each other but I didn't see it in the book, I don't understand why they loved the other (apart from the lack of better candidates, perhaps!). I enjoyed the apparition of Georgana and Captain Peyton, however, it kinda broke my heart to see Georgana withdrawn, secretive and unhappy. When we meet characters from previous romances, we want to see them happy!
As always, I enjoy books that take place on historic ship, so that was very nice. The other settings of the book, on land, are more blurry.
Overall, a good read but that fell a little short of my expectations, maybe because the author wrote it at a challenging time in her life. I'll still be looking forward to reading other books by Arlem Hawks, because I loved her other books.
This gave me a bit of reverse Pride and Prejudice vibes, but if the story floated on the sea. And I especially love the sea. Maybe I just see a bit of Austen in everything I read?
Summing it up: May hires on as a “lady’s maid” for the captain’s wife after her father leaves her in desperate circumstances. She has a most unfortunate first encounter with Elias, the chaplain.
Elias is not the stodgy chaplain he appears and I could not wait until people discovered his insides. He was so real. His inner turmoil was filled with humility and I dare you not to fall for him.
This story was exactly like being on the ocean with ups and downs. Happy enchanting magical moments then heart wrenching times that were necessary, but grabbed my heart strings and threw me overboard.
Although it stands alone, it’s also part of a series and the characters are still an integral part of this book.
Rhyme: When first impressions leave Elias lacking, will he ever get a second chance with May? Can their adventures bring love or will Elias let his fears get in the way?
