From USA Today bestselling author Karpov Kinrade comes an award-winning academy series full of romance and page-turning suspense. "She escaped, but she'll never be free." "Time held no meaning as my mind darted in and out of memories. Past and present collided to create a full-sensory collage out of my playing hide-n-seek with my best friends Luke--who always cheated by walking through walls when he was about to be caught--and Lucy; Mr. Caldrin critiquing my sketches and offering ideas to make them more realistic; targets changing faces, blending into the same person, their thoughts rippling through my mind like waves. Through it all, a demon stalked me from the shadows of my memories, never quite showing its face, but crouching, waiting. And then I dreamed...." Sam and Drake may have escaped the paranormal spy academy that had sinister plans for them, but they aren't free--not with a powerful Seeker after them. As Sam struggles with the ethics of her new powers and embraces a blossoming physical relationship with Drake, Lucy and Luke face challenges of their own. With forces coalescing inside and outside the Paranormal Spy Academy dorms, it's only a matter of time before the fire they started forces each of them to make choices they can't undo. But will it be enough to save them?

Action, action, and more action. That's what this second book in the series is all about! This story is full of action on every page. There isn't a single boring moment. Kimberly Kinrade continues with her great character development. Sam's personality really bloomed in this book. I liked her in the first book but I loved her even more in this one. I wasn't too sure about Drake's character, but I have a respect for him now, the way he takes care of Sam in this book. You also get to know a couple of the minor characters - Luke and Lucy (Sam's best friends), who are both great.
While "Forbidden Mind", I think, focus's around the characters and developing their individual personalities. This one, "Forbidden Fire" is all about the action and adventure. Kimberly Kinrade really lets loose here.

This is one of my favorite lines in the book -

"I don't have to get drunk to know the aftermath doesn't feel so great. Intelligent people learn lessons without having to make all the mistakes"

And the ending - Wow! I loved the ending of this book! Talk about ending with a bang and lots of twists. Great, really great. But it definitely leaves room for the third book. Which I hope Kimberly will consider letting me also review.

This sequel to Forbidden Mind is every bit as good as its predecessor. Once again, I found myself caring deeply, not only for the main characters, Drake and Sam, but also for their friends, secondary characters, Lucy and Luke, still trapped inside the Kids-for-Rent school.

Things have got a lot worse since Sam and Drake’s escape, the school has turned into a prison camp with guards everywhere and harsh punishments. The Principle who was a relatively caring man in the circumstances is now a shell of a man doing the bidding of the cruel Mr Black. While Lucy and Luke struggle with the new regime, Drake and Sam, who has been impregnated without her consent by the Rent- a Kid organisation – luckily it’s Drake’s baby - run from those sent to recapture them.

Add to that Drake and Sam’s difference of opinion on the moral use of their powers, and Sam’s illness as her body adapts to pregnancy and withdrawal from the drugs she’s been fed from an early age, and you get a lot of tension. It’s one of those books you don’t want to put down and I gobbled it up in two days.

The special thing about this book is its questioning the nature of good and evil, not just in terms of the sometimes deadly paranormal powers these kids have, but in terms of the characters. Is anyone completely evil or completely good? And once you understand an ‘evil’ person’s background and motivations, can you still see them in the same way?

I totally recommend this book to all fans of YA Urban fantasy, but read ‘Forbidden Mind’ first. Kimberley Kinrade is an Awesome Indies Author and this book proves that she well deserves that honour.

Sensational, Explosive, Awesome!!!!

I stayed up until the early hours of the morning (2 a.m.) reading this book once I started reading I didn't want to stop so everything was put on hold until I finished and it was worth every moment of it! I love this book! I couldn't imagine myself going through and living through what these kids in this book have. it really makes you think about how eerily similar our world we live in today is so alike with our government controlling us and using us.. Forbidden Fire is explosive! it's action-packed, riveting and so full of surprises you never would have seen coming! get ready to be on Fire because this is one book that you will never ever forget!!!

Sam and Drake are back, joined by Luke and Lucy in the action-packed sequel to Forbidden Mind. Things are heating up for the runaways while the twins still stuck at Rent-a-Kid struggle to find a way to escape, both for themselves and for the other gifted children being exploited by the organization.

While Sam and Drake are pursued by mysterious men in black, Luke and Lucy deal with the militarization of their school and dangerous missions beyond the norm.

I refuse to give anything away, but if you loved Forbidden Mind, you'll be a huge fan of book two. I enjoyed this one even more than the first--this series just keeps getting better!

(Note: The author graciously provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

This second novel continues the exciting story of Sam, Drake, Lucy, and Luke, four teens with paranormal powers, as they strive to escape from the clutches of the sinister organization known as "Rent-A-Kid".

As in the first novel, Kinrade immediately plunges the reader into the action! In this second novel, she also gives us more background on her characters, which of course allows us to empathize with them even more.

Sam (I believe this is short for "Samantha", altough this is not mentioned in either this book or the first) and Drake have managed to break out of a 'hospital' that's really a hidden facility for genetic breeding and experimentation. In the first book, Forbidden Mind, Sam had been impregnated with Drake's genetic material for the purpose of creating a child with superior paranormal powers. Now she and Drake are on the run, constantly afraid of being captured again. Together with Brad, Drake's friend, who is a newspaper reporter, they initially make an attempt to let the authorities know what's really going on at the school, where their friends and schoolmates are being trained to serve the organization's clients, and ultimately, to be bred so as to produce more and more powerful paranormally-gifted children. However, they soon realize the futility of this tactic; Rent-A-Kid has a long arm, and their executives have made sure to make Sam appear to be an escaped mental patient. So the odds are that no one will believe the fugitives' story.

Meanwhile, things at the school have changed drastically. A curfew is now being imposed on the kids, and there are guards everywhere. Whereas, before Sam's escape, the students enjoyed some semblance of freedom, however illusory, now a dictatorship has openly taken over, led by the infamous Mr. Black.

This highly-charged story is a conspiracy theorist's dream; there's just so much going on! Some new characters are introduced, as well. The most dangerous of them is the Seeker, a mysterious man with incredibly-enhanced powers. He is the one who is really behind the horribly oppressive changes at the school. Furthermore, he is actively searching for Sam - with his mind...

Kinrade has plenty of twists and turns, making this book just as much of a page-turner as the first one. Also, the relationship between Sam and Drake deepens, although all is not exactly perfect for them, either.

The plot of this novel reveals the full extent of the unethical goals sought by Rent-A-Kid. These goals are part of the plan laid out by the organization's founder, a ruthless man whose identity is a real surprise to the reader. I know I never saw this coming!

One of my favorite characters, aside from the main four, is someone I really should have mentioned in my review of Forbiddn Mind: Father Patrick, the elderly Catholic priest who has been a father figure to Drake for many years. This kindly man has given Drake gentle, non-judgmental guidance in the past, and continues to help him in these new circumstances, which now include Sam and their unborn child. Furthermore, from the author's description, it seems that Father Patrick may be psychic himself. He appears to read Drake's mind at one point.

Father Patrick is the sort of person you can sit down and enjoy a calm conversation with. Rather than condemn, he will listen to you, and offer you advice without making you feel as if you were the world's worst sinner. Kinrade's characterization here is very realistic, so I'm wondering if the priest is modeled on an actual person.

I'm really hoping that it will be Father Patrick who will officiate the wedding ceremony of Drake and Sam, when the time comes for them to marry!

I also have to mention the fact that Kinrade's villains are very well-done. They're far from being cardboard creations (this is in spite of the fact that the evil doctor, in the first book, was really more of a stereotypical bad guy). Both the Seeker and Mr. Black each have 'a softer side'. We can even feel some empathy for them, due to the difficult circumstances they have both endured. Actually, I have to admit that it's not easy for me to have any good feelings for Mr. Black -- the man is totally emotionless and has no qualms about killing defenseless people if he deems it necessary. There's just one area in which his emotions come to the surface, though. It's an area very close to his heart, paradoxically enough.

The novel ends on an uncertain note, which, of course, has the purpose of partially preparing the reader for the third and last volume. I thought it was handled quite well, however. I certainly didn't get a feeling that it was forced. The events of the last couple of chapters led to an ending that was, in fact, almost inevitable. Still, a feeling of hope shines through, and the reader is left with tangible clues regarding the most likely future outcome.

Kimberly Kinrade has surely penned another winner! Sam, Drake, Lucy, and Luke are the new young adult paranormal heroes, and you will cheer them on as they fight to win the freedom to live their lives as they choose, by their own rules, and not those established by an organization masquerading as their benefactor.

So be sure to pick up this novel (I hope you've already read the first one), and be prepared to feel the fire! Be prepared to jump into the revolution! And, while you're at it, remember that there's another great book coming soon -- Forbidden Life!

Forbidden Fire begins where Forbidden mind ended with Drake and Sam escaping from Rent-A-Kid. Now that they are out they are staying with Drake's childhood friend Brad. Everything seems to be going well until a man breaks into the apartment and Drake is forced to kill him. Soon the three of them are on the run while trying to find a way to help the other kids from Rent-A-Kid to escape.

Drake is determined to help both Sam and the others at Rent-A-Kid by using his mind control. Sam is firmly against the mind control, especially since Drake took control of her mind during their own escape. The Seeker, the man in charge of the paranormal school, is getting closer to them while Sam and Drake are beginning to drift apart.

Meanwhile, Lucy and Luke have joined with a group of teenagers to plan a rebellion that will lead them to their freedom. Unfortunately Mr. Black is now running the campus and there are armed guards around every corner. When Lucy and Luke are suddenly re-activated and sent on a mission hey know something isn't right. Will they be returning to the school or is this their final mission?

There was a lot of action and fighting in this book. The characters really began to come alive and become individuals. I was able to see how each of them feels and how they react to situations. I was scared for all of them as Sam has a feel that something bad is coming. I kept hoping that Sam and Drake would reach the school and reunite with Lucy and Luke and help with the rebellion.

The end reveals a huge twist that centers around a a secret Sam learns about her family. It is something that will change her life forever. When the teenagers finally rebel and try to escape many lives will be lost but will it be worth it? The book ends in a cliffhanger and I can't wait to see how the final book finishes out this fast paced, paranormal thriller.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 unicorns - I loved it!

Wow!! This book is even better than book 1. So much happening in this book, too exciting to put down! You learn answers to questions you had in book1, and you got answers to questions you didn’t even know you had. There is more violence in this book and some graphic (just wanted to make you aware). You know me, and I will not give away what happens in this book because I refuse to ruin your own journey into this awesome book. It does contain battles, lots of drama, family reunions, new friends, and lost friends. Kimberly does a fantastic job pulling you into the story and making you connect with all the characters you love.

I absolutely recommend this story to fantasy, sci-fi and paranormal book lovers alike.

This was a bit darker than the first one as the other para-powered kids rebel against the people who are trying to control them. Sam continues to struggle with what she is and what she can do. Are her powers evil? Or does it depend on what they're used for? Some parts of this book were wrapped up a little too easily for me but leaves me to wonder if these things will be picked up in book 3. A fun and engaging read.

It's actually pleasant how quickly this story passes. It's just action-packed from the beginning to the end. The characters are represented much, much better this time around. Drake, however, is just so easy to hate despite being the main male character. I couldn't even pretend to like him at all. Lucy, however, becomes a much more relatable female lead now that she has a voice and some better representation. The plot continues to thicken in a very unexpected and enjoyable way.

I have to give this book a 4 out of 5 because it's better than the first book, but both of the main characters are out for me. I'd have loved if Sam was much more like Lucy. I'd also have preferred if Drake was actually likable. Despite the love lost between the characters and I, I continued because the story was getting really, really good.

Karpov Kinrade do not disappoint.

First, I want to humbly apologize for misspelling Kinrade with Kinkade on former posts. I have read many of their books and definitely know the husband and wife name.
Anyway, This second installment is really good. I never put it down once started. I am definitely engrossed with all of it.
As far as Paranormal Romance goes, it has many things to think about, especially pertaining to choices that may be considered wrong, if they are for the right reason. At what point is evil truly evil? It also touched on redemption from others, but also for ourselves.
That's it for this one. I am entirely too excited to begin the last book.

Forbidden Fire was an incredibly exciting continuation of the Forbidden series! I loved how the first book in the series left off. It left room for lots excitement in book two and it certainly didn’t disappoint. While there was a bit about this second book that I did not like, it kept me on my toes!

Forbidden Fire brought Lucy and Drake together–in person this time–to help defeat the evil organizer that’s taken over Rent-A-Kid, a school that harbors kids with super paranormal powers. I was really excited to see how their relationship would pan out now that they were able to interact with each other in person rather than through their mind talk. This was perhaps what bugged me most about the book. Instead of their relationship continuing on, growing, and both characters learning together as a team and a couple, Sam struggled to communicate basic things with Drake let alone what she was really feeling inside. This made me slightly angry with Sam and feel sorry for Drake. I could understand where Sam was coming on, the things that went down in the last book was enough to shake anyone to their core but Drake is so open for being there for her, to help support her through all the turmoil but she failed to open up to him a lot of the time. Sam was such a strong character in the first book but in this book she was definitely more broken and while I have faith she will find strength again, it was hard to read from her point of view at times. However, I really loved Drake in this book! He has so much resting on his shoulders, the most important thing being keeping his girlfriend and unborn child safe, but he kept strong. Sure he had his moments of weakness and fear too, but he tried to stay there for Sam as much as he could. With all of that being said, near the end of the book, Sam seemed to snap out of it and it left me hope for her to redeem herself in the next book.

And now to the parts I LOVED about this book! First it was simply a delight to learn more about two of my favorite people from the first book, Lucy and Luke! These two are twins who just so happen to be Sam’s best friends and only a small fraction of the kids left to deal with the hell their school has become. Throughout this book we got to see a lot more of Luke and Lucy and I just adored how brave and tough these two were while also letting their sense of humor, insecurities, and struggles with right and wrong shine through; it made them seem all the more real to me!

Their struggles only lead me to my very favorite part, the mystery, the suspense, the action OH MY! This whole book kept me on the edge of my seat chapter after chapter, page after page. Luke and Lucy were dealing with their own sticky situations while being stuck inside the school while Sam, Drake, and his friend Brad were on the run and getting themselves into a number of jams on the outside. I was constantly wondering what would happen next, what new problem would arise and when and how they would each work through them. Up until the very last page, this continued on and I must say, I am extremely happy with how the book ended! A lot was figured out and resolved by the end of Forbidden Fire but for every question answered and every problem worked through, another two arose for the future book to work through!

All in all, I would say Forbidden Fire was an enjoyable book. While Sam may have annoyed me at times, I was pleasantly surprised with the other characters we were able to fully meet this time around and the action certainly kept me turning page after page!

Check out the book tour for this book and the others.

Wow, this story just keeps getting better and better. It flows so well from one book till the next. I was happy that I have them all here ready to read. And same with the last and final book, Forbidden Life, I am ready to pick it up too.

Since this is the 2nd book, and know some may not have read the first yet, I am being careful in this review, it will be spoiler free for both books, the best I can.
I loved Forbidden Mind, and love Forbidden Fire too.

This series reminds me of a few TV shows I had watched in the past, and now. In the past, I watched a show called Dark Angel, this reminds me of it; in the way that the kids are locked up, and trained for the companies own uses, and tracking devices installed too. But in this series, the kids are more like the x-men characters, and a whole lot like a show I watch on Sci-Fi channel called Alphas, in that one, its not kids, but adult with all sorts of Para-powers too, but they call them Alphas. Anyway, the point is, even though these are all similar in ways, this story in itself is unique.

I am hooked like you would not believe in this series, and will be sad to see it end. I really am impressed with Kimberly’s writing style, and am very comfortable in reading it.
I love how we get to be in different points of view. In this one, we get inside many, Sam, Drake, Lucy and more.

I do not want to say much more about the story, as to not spoil it, but its intense, exciting, and non-stop action. You will be on the edge of your seat reading as fast as you can to see what happens next. It has been really hard to put down, for sleep, lol.
I highly recommend this series. It’s great for all ages, you get the sci-fi spin with the paranormal in there too, with some romance. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars for me.

It isn't often I get the pleasure of picking up a second book in a series that is better than the first, but Forbidden Fire is just that. You can see the review I wrote on the first book Forbidden Mind here.

The story starts off shortly after the last one ends with Sam and Drake on the run after escaping Rent-A-Kid. They've found refuge with Drake's friend, Brad, and are now working on a plan to expose Rent-A-Kid and get the other para-kids out.

This book is action packed. Where the last one happens a lot in Sam's head as she's realizing the evil that is under the surface of Rent-A-Kid, this one has a sense of urgency and fear, now that they understand more of what's going on, that the last one didn't have until closer to the end. Not to mention, the escape of Sam and Drake has caused a few changes to be brought about at Rent-A-Kid.

Where once Rent-A-Kid was an idyllic boarding school with para-kids, albeit some shady things going on beneath the surface, it has now turned into a prison. Guards walk everywhere not for the kids protection, but to keep them in line. Forbidden Fire takes a much darker twist than the first book, and it really works. People die. Revolts rise up with great consequences. And with every action comes a reaction. Kids have to struggle with questions of right and wrong, what amount of sacrifice is worth it--if any, and the very real idea of not making it out alive.

Kimberly Kinrade writes Forbidden Fire with the same quick, action packed style she wrote the first book, though this one is definitely a lot more heart-racing. She writes a dark story line with some truly evil characters without crossing a line of appropriateness in writing for a younger audience. Not only that, she humanizes her villains making them real. You still hate them, you still hope that the Para-kids triumph over them, but there is a sense of sympathy you feel for them.

I finished Forbidden Fire wanting to read more, eager to find out the next step in Sam and Drake's life and, if my sisters are reading this review, you can probably expect to receive the omnibus edition at some point.

One thing about this book that I didn't notice in the first one (it is there, though), but really like, is the fact that Sam's scenes are written in first person, while Drake's and Lucy's are written in third. I found this to be a very interesting take and really helped differentiate the character's different voices in my mind.

I'm giving Forbidden Fire by Kimberly Kinrade a 5 out of 5 stars because it remains appropriate for a YA audience, has a fast paced, edge of your seat plot, has well rounded characters, deals well with the issues addressed, and of course leaves you wanting more.

A review copy was provided by the author for an honest review. Forbidden Fire immerses you again in the the world of para-powered people with the thrilling continuation of Sam and Drake's story. Now in hiding and on the run from Rent-A-Kid agents these two have a lot more at stake which makes reading this book essential! This sequel will give you chills because of how ridiculously good it is. You get glimpses into Sam's past which really adds an extra layer of understanding to her character. You also get the additional POV from Lucy which is different and fun because she's got a lot going on in lock-down at the Rent-A-Kid facility and you get to know her character better and come to appreciate her role more. Lucy's viewpoint becomes more intriguing as her own lie-detector abilities manifest in new and unique ways not yet seen before in Forbidden Mind.

But perhaps the best development of the entire story is how everyone's para-powers advance and turn into something different and unexpected. Forbidden Fire has real character depth and many plot layers unfolding throughout the story. There are plenty of moments that will take you by surprise; unpredictability is a fantastic asset Forbidden Fire utilizes to the fullest which is amazingly refreshing. I really like the new villain that's unveiled; a very formidable and evil enemy. I found myself questioning good and evil and that's basically what this book explores; it incorporates the morality of what defines right and wrong. & You finally get some insight into why Drake was never taken to Rent-A-Kid when he was younger and who Sam's real family is which is such an insane revelation! Forbidden Fire kicks up the gore and amplifies the cruelty making some scenes hard to read but nevertheless gripping in a twisted sort of way.

If the story were a puzzle all the pieces would be different and yet they would still be connected to the same picture. Forbidden Fire is fiery, both figuratively and literally. It's well written and has you feeling a giant array of emotions. Incredibly good would be an understatement. The first book Forbidden Mind was a great read but this book takes everything to a whole other level - one which raises the bar even higher. It's a must read for anyone who enjoys reading about young adults with uniquely powerful abilities, evil corporations, unpredictable twists, consistent action, romance, dark plots, gore galore, and cool characters all wrapped into one engrossing story.

I cannot wait to read the conclusion of this amazing trilogy, I'm just SO impressed with everything that's happened thus far. It's so deliciously dark and captivating! I have nothing but great things to say about this series :).

I loved the first book in this series and with the way it ended I couldn't wait to dive into the next book. I have to say the action was ramped up big time in the second book. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. In the second book we are dealing with a Sam and Drake trying to figure out how to rescue all the others. They just have no idea that there is someone after them and not stopping until he gets them. I loved seeing Sam and Drake more in this book. They have really grown to love each other and it's so sweet watching them interact and plot their next moves. I love that they are so in sync with each other and can work so well together.

I also loved how Lucy and Luke had more prominent roles this time around and had to take on more responsibility. I loved how well they worked together and could calm each other down. They are an amazing brother and sister duo with powers to be reckoned with. I liked how they realized that they had to help themselves because Sam may not have been able to. I loved the plot twists that we received to in the Seeker. I didn't see any of that coming and was so shocked buy Sam's origin. That move was well played by the author.

The author did a great job with the world building in this one too. I could picture Sam and Drake out on the beach getting some sun. It just felt so real and vivid. I also loved the way she depicted the school this time around. It was no longer the place that the kids felt safe in. It now seemed more like a fortress designed to keep them in. I loved the subtle hints the author through out that showed you why the kids started realizing the school wasn't really what it was cracked up to be. Overall I loved this book and it was another great addition to this story. I have to say the author set me up with the ending so now I am so glad I'm on the tour for the next book because I must know how this story ends. That was such an ending that it left me speechless. I highly recommend this book to others who enjoy a great story with an awesome plot and excellent characters.

I received a copy of this book for review from the author in exchange for an honest review and this in no way infulenced my review.
