Speed Training: Principles and Philosophy for All Track Events

Rate this book
COACHING SPEED!! This approach has evolved over more than 40 years of success at the national and international level both as an athlete myself as well as a coach both collegiately as well as in high school. It has produced Olympians on every U.S. and Canadian Olympic Team since 1968. In their most basic form, all events in track and field have essentially the same problem. That problem, quite simply, is to get the center of gravity of an object from one point in time and space to another point in time and space. Since there is always a premium and reward for getting the object there in the least elapsed time, then speed is the most critical characteristic surrounding our efforts. If we are to maximize our potential in track and field, then we must understand these basic laws that govern all movement and how we can involve and employ them in our coaching. This system that emphasizes speed has worked for many athletes. It has worked for events as diverse as the national championships at 60 metres, to the outdoor national championships at 10,000 metres. It is by no means the last word in training and coaching, but it is a point of departure. The whole concept here is to provide the readers with a backdrop against which to bounce their own ideas. You do not have to agree with what is said here for this effort to be successful.
