His love for her was forbidden…

Riss has been around since the beginning of time and watching his charges be born, grow up, and die has taken a toll on him. Until lately, being a Protector has always been enough… The Archangel Michael, Riss’s mentor and superior, decides with the help of their “Boss” to change things up a bit―like the rest, he doesn’t want to lose one of his best Protectors. Riss is assigned to guide and protect Kala. Riss is not happy about the changes and hopes this is his last assignment as a Protector before he can quit and live his last year on Earth and die.

She has nothing left to lose―except her life…

Kala has lost her family as a child, her job, and now her apartment. She is also having weird dreams that she can’t quite remember…dreams revolving around a single white feather. Kala’s sexual fascination with the feather brings forth the most gorgeous man she’s ever seen―Riss. He came for his feather―he can feel everything she does with it throughout his body.

Sex with a human is forbidden and Riss has never even considered it―until now.

A madman, suffering from a delusional fantasy, has set his sights on Kala. He has already killed and will kill again. She will be his or suffer the consequences…

And Riss has been forbidden to interfere…

As I work my way through Kathi S. Barton's back catalog I found I hadn't read "Mystic Protectors Service" published back in 2014. After reading the blurb, and always enjoying Ms. Barton's books, I set out to see what this series was all about and if it had any of the elements that I have come to enjoy in her previous works that I've read. In a nutshell, yes! Riss, as you've already gathered from the blurb is a protector who reports to the Archangel Michael, who reports to the "Boss". Because each protector has always stayed with one person from birth to death and then a month of leave, it definitely takes its toll and several are ready to give up their position. In order to do that, they have one year on earth to settle any affairs they might need to settle and then they die. Boss has decided he's going to change up the way things are done and it's the Archangel Michael's responsibility to make it happen. Riss is assigned to Kala during a trying time in her life, although none of it could be classified as easy. She was raised in an orphanage until she was eighteen and has been on her own since then. She's smart, independent, and has a strong character … until recently. She's lost her job, through no fault of her own, she finds out she has two weeks to pack all her belongings and find another place to live, and her ex-co-worker Dan has developed an unhealthy obsession with her. She's ready to just pack everything in and call it quits. Riss only has knowledge and experience of being a celestial protector but this time, while on Earth watching over Kala, he materializes as a human, ringing her doorbell in time to stop her from making, what he feels is a drastic mistake. Trying to come to terms with what needs to be done and all the new and confusing feelings and emotions he's experiencing has allowed him to lose a bit of his control. Boss has a plan and Ms. Barton has filled in all the gaps with a fated mate romance, danger, angst, chemistry, and passion. If this is what I can expect from the rest of the series, I'm sold. I can't wait to read 'Agon' next.

I enjoyed this book and I'll be reading more of the series. I need to see what happens with the others.
The characters are strong, the story interesting.
With that being said, I found it very hard to determine who was speaking most of the time. Two different people spoke in the same paragraphs so often that I'm wondering if some of it was a formatting issue in the Kindle version.

Loved Riss and Kala
Angel heros are not my usual genre, but I really like Kathi's books so I gave this book a go.
Riss is a protector, something like a guardian angel. He is very tired. Humans have changed so much over the centuries and caring for them from birth to death has worn him down. He wants to be done. Choosing to quit means choosing death. Riss is choosing death.
The Boss knows that many of his protectors, are like Riss. He has a plan. He knows that his protectors will be resistant. It is up to archangel Michael to implement the changes. He is starting with Riss.
Riss is resistant to the changes. All he sees is more heartache. Then he is assigned Kala. She is strong and smart, but life has never been easy for her. Raised in an orphanage and on her own since 18. Everything is a struggle.
She looses her job. Her former co-worker and friend, Dan, has developed an dangerous obsession with her. Then she meets Riss. She feels safe and a strong attraction.
Riss can't understand the feelings he has fro his new charge. He soon gives into his attraction, while struggling with betraying the Boss.
I liked the story idea. The Boss a benevolent manipulator. Michael his confident and R hand. Riss was really likable, as was Kala, the women chosen to be his wife. Dan while doing horrible thing, was a tragic character, and like that there was empathy for him. A good start to an interesting and steamy series. A re read for me.

Kathi S. Barton published the first of the new “Mystic Protectors” series this month. “Riss” introduces Protectors, a group of otherworldly beings in which each is assigned to watch a human from his/her birth until death. The supernaturals’ tasks allow no action or interference in the lives of humans, only whispers of encouragement in their heads. (The author eventually reveals the surprisingly simple reason for the non-intervention directive.)

A Protector from the beginning of time, Riss feels emotionally invested in each of his charges and grows care worn and weary from the thousands of deaths he’s witnessed. Approaching his immediate supervisors, he asks for the end of his service, but they want time in granting his request. It seems a new job structure, one that may lessen a Protector’s heartbreak, needs testing. Riss agrees to stay through its trial stage.

Kala Marrow, one of the latest human charges, suffered through a childhood in the foster care system. Just as the new program starts, her employer abruptly fires her. Further upheaval erupts when she receives notice to vacate her apartment because the owners are tearing down the building for a new business venture. Crushed by the rapid blows, Kala descends into despair. Fascinated and alarmed, Riss desperately appears in human form to her. A series of events, including Kala being stalked by a mentally unbalanced co-worker, alters both her destiny and that of the Protectors forever.

Kathi’s dexterity in weaving stories delight readers. Her ability building characters and worlds captured and kept their attention with her other series, and this latest novel creatively lays the foundation for a renewed love affair between author and fans.

Another new series to love by Author Kathi S. Barton containing a new paranormal for her readers to enjoy; the Mystic Protector. Riss is a Mystic Protector who's job it is involves protecting whatever being, no matter how small, from beginning to end, the life span of who or whatever he is assigned. That job can be quite a bit boring as Riss says "A single worm. They live for years and do nothing but dig and poop." But change is coming. The only change Riss is interested in is no longer being a Protector, he is tired. Entering into the life of a new charge, Kala, Riss begins to feel things he never has before. Kala needs more protection than he is allowed to give. Riss breaks some rules and has to be punished. Unbeknownst to him and some of his fellow Protectors, that is all a part of the change and is for those who are the best at what they do. Beings of a higher power are guiding them when they didn't even know they needed it most.

Mystic Trainers

What a great and wonderful take on paranormal. Most people are lead to believe that we have what's called a guardian angel. In Riss we have what's called a protector someone to watch over you. Riss is tired, he has been doing his job for so long it's starting to be unfulfilling. Enter Boss who is Riss's boss who decides to shake things up and give his protectors a reason to go on. Riss meets Kala and he's intrigued by her. Kala is a smart, sassy and a strong woman who hasn't had the best life. From the first meeting you're taking on a hilarious roller coaster filled ride with angst, strive, combustible chemistry and a cast of characters so spectacular you can't wait to see what's in store for them

Riss: Mystic Protectors Series

Riss is the first book in a new series “Mystic Protectors”, by Ms Barton.
In this first book, Riss is a guardian who wants to quit. His bosses, however, have something else in mind. They arrange for him to meet Kala, a young woman having quite the run of bad luck.
Of course there is danger stalking her, and she and Riss must negotiate that as well as the growing attraction between them.
I don’t want to give too much of this book away. I will say that I truly loved it, and I know you will too
