American Ufologist who took particular interest in crashed flying saucer stories.
Stringfield was director of Civilian Research, Interplanetary Flying Objects (CRIFO), and published a monthly newsletter, ORBIT. In 1957 he became public relations adviser for the civilian UFO group NICAP under the direction of Donald Keyhoe, a friend of his since 1953. From 1967-1969, Stringfield served as an "Early Warning Coordinator" for the Condon Committee. During the 1970s, he wrote a number of books about alleged recoveries of alien spaceships and alien bodies.
n 1978, Stringfield served as UFO research adviser to Grenada Prime Minister Sir Eric Gairy.
The author is (was) one of the great veterans of UFO 🛸 investigators. His book is a well-written work of anecdotal experiences of encounters of the 1st-3rd kind. His writing style is lively and is matched by a vividly read audiobook version. The author is a researcher and not a sensationalist. Situation Red : Ufo Siege is an earnest attempt to inform the public of documented UFO encounters.

Now, when ufology (sic) is awash with theories about altered states of consciousness, pizoelectric effects, governmental black-operations, propagated electro-magnetic fields and the like, it is refreshing to read a book by one of the original experts who, in cooperation with the Air Force in the fifties and sixties, took the phenomenon at face value: flying saucers from outer space! Stringfield is notable in this regard not only for his early involvements, but also for having first publicized the evidences for UFO retrievals which may even have included the recovery of aliens.
I wish I could find a book that covers the years since this was written that is as well done as this. Many cases are given in detail but since it was published in the late seventies, many are cases that have been done to death in recent books. It is possibly the last comprehensive book that was done well; modern books seemed to either be a rehash of old cases or another fantastical theory on why they are here. (If I hear one more tv program on Roswell, I think I'll scream. It's probably least likely to be true of any of the old stories!)
I have a theory that half the new books are silly because they are disinformation, but that's another story. This book is great if you want a look at cases from 1947-1975.
This book was an excellent take on the 1973 flap, it has many interesting cases, but most of these cases are very well known, the book is still very interesting and it is very important in the history of Ufology. Stringfield is one of the most important Ufologists, and with his Crash and Retrieval series called Status report began a new cicle on the UFO phenomena, this book comes just before that and talks briefly of three of these cases. It is not a book essential for someone who just want to learn about Ufos, but it is essential to people who wants to know about the history of Ufology
This is one of the better UFO books that I've been through. It is fun and one of those books that sound plausible. The reader's performance is professional but has annoying limitations.
