In comparison with most other parts of the Master Chronology, Appendix XIV: 'The U2' is quite short and concise. I also found this edition to be very thought provoking, showing avenues of research that are well worth pursuing.
Oswald's so called defection into the Soviet Union did occur just months before the downing of Powers' U2. (1/5/60) The popular idea that Oswald provided the Soviets with technical data to enable the Russians to shoot down the U2, as he supposedly declared in the American embassy in Moscow, I believe to be absurd. However, CIA were well aware that Soviet radar and missile technologies had caught up to the high altitude spy plane and Richard Bissell had long initiated the project with Lockheed (Oxcart) for the A-12, fore-runner to the SR-71 (Blackbird), and the planned replacement of the U2.
Was Oswald sent to be a 'patsy' for CIA's deliberate incursion of the U2, fully knowing it was doomed, as would be 1960's Paris Peace Summit?
Food for thought. In fact, a gourmet treat for those with interest in the 'Cold War' as well as the JFK assassination.
