Landschaftsarchitektin Luisa, geplagt von einer unerträglichen Chefin und der Trauer um ihren verstorbenen Mann, bekommt die Gelegenheit, im kleinen Ort Collaton einen gemeinnützigen Gemeinschaftsgarten anzulegen. Sie sieht in diesem Angebot einen Ausweg aus ihrer Lethargie. Beim Anlegen des Gartens stößt sie jedoch insbesondere bei den Menschen vor Ort auf Widerstand. Nur Lehrer Cas unterstützt sie von Anfang an. Er glaubt an das Gute in den Menschen und hat ein Herz für benachteiligte Jugendliche, die sich bald ebenso als unverzichtbare Helfer:innen für Luisa erweisen.

Das klingt erst einmal nach einem guten Unterhaltungsroman. Mich hat zusätzlich aber besonders gefreut, dass der Roman zeigt, wie aus einer individuellen Vision ein gemeinschaftliches Projekt entstehen kann. Die Autorin beleuchtet dabei feinfühlig die sozialen Dynamiken und die unterschiedlichen Motivationen der Charaktere, die sich nach und nach für den Garten einsetzen. Ein weiteres Highlight des Romans ist die eindrucksvolle Schilderung, wie aus einem kargen Grundstück ein blühender Garten wird. Die Autorin verwebt dabei geschickt Themen wie soziale Gerechtigkeit und ökologische Nachhaltigkeit und zeigt auf, wie ein gemeinschaftliches Projekt Brücken zwischen den Menschen bauen und neue Perspektiven eröffnen kann. Indem die Geschichte in einer Gegend spielt, in der aktuell ein Kohlekraftwerk gebaut wird, setzt die Autorin mit dem Roman so ein klares Zeichen für eine alternative Zukunft.

Ein kleiner Wermutstropfen ist allerdings der etwas schwerfällige Einstieg in die Geschichte. Die erste Hälfte des Romans zieht sich stellenweise, bevor in der zweiten Hälfte die Handlung deutlich an Fahrt aufnimmt und die Charaktere sowie die Story an Tiefe und Dynamik gewinnen. Insgesamt ist „Forgotten Garden“ jedoch ein inspirierender Roman, der berührt, Mut macht und zeigt, dass Veränderungen möglich sind, wenn Menschen zusammenarbeiten und an eine gemeinsame Vision glauben. Die tiefe Menschlichkeit und die optimistische Perspektive auf soziale und ökologische Fragen unserer Zeit machen diesen Roman zu einer gleichermaßen unterhaltsamen und lohnenden Lektüre.

I've finished this book a few days ago, forgetting to write a review immediately and now I have a problem, because this story was so forgettable that I'm really not sure what it was about.
Oh yes, garden, grief, dramatic main character, bad characters, good characters that were completely overdone in their goodness, characters with terrible backgrounds getting second chance after second chance... Predictability, predictability, predictability. Wordy, wordy, wordy. "dangerous"Never ending descriptions of plants. Adding some "dangerous" subplot... Urgh.

Well, yes, as you can guess I am not a fan of this story. It didn't wow me, it bored me. Which is a shame, because Sharon Gosling's previous books were really great.

Sharon Gosling’s previous book, The Lighthouse Bookshop, was one of my top books of 2022. I adored it from start to finish so I couldn’t wait to read this new book, The Forgotten Garden. It’s another wonderful read with the themes of community, friendship and coming together to give support in the darkest of times when people need it the most. I’ll admit from the get-go that it didn’t have quite the same affect on me as The Lighthouse Bookshop and to be honest I think any book would have difficulties living up to my very high expectations after I had finished that book. But still, I really did enjoy this one as it took the reader down a path into a different sphere, that of nature and gardens and their healing power and their ability to unite people from different backgrounds and varied ages and all walks of life as they learn that through working together you can achieve anything. Nothing is easy for the characters as they go through a wide range of experiences but the fact they have to struggle to come to terms with what they are dealing with in order to try and make it through to the other side means that they are all very well written and their development and the manner in which they alter and adapt over the course of the story made this a joy to read.

Luisa MacGregor is a budding landscape architect used to standing in her boss Marianne’s shadow even though she is the one who has the best and brightest of ideas when it comes to garden design. When yet again her ideas seemed to be overshadowed by Marianne even though she knows what she has proposed would be perfect, well she reaches the end of her tether. She receives a phone call from Owen, her husband Reuben’s godfather. He is a property developer who has a piece of land that is not fit for commercial development and Owen knows that it had always been Luisa and Reuben’s idea to set up a community garden scheme. Said idea never came to fruition as Reuben passed away and Luisa has been dealing with her grief and firmly putting any of their excellent ideas firmly to the back of her mind. Luísa’s life had stalled since tragedy hit it and it never really got going again. Instead, she has just been meandering along but with this offer from Owen, is now the time for Luisa to embark upon the next stage of her life? Doing something she is passionate about and fulfilling a dream that she had long shared with Reuben.

Luisa is reluctant at first but decides to visit the site and see what potential it could have. After all, being handed such a golden opportunity she can’t just turn it down immediately and especially seen as she is tied to a job that really has no hold over her heart. Collaton, a rundown seaside town, is the location of the site which is nothing but a wasteland as it was once a former factory. The descriptions of the area are pretty gloomy and dark. It’s like the land that time forgot with nothing beautiful or inspiring about it. The surrounding area is rundown, and it appears as if it is a low-income area with trouble and strife very much run of the mill. But this plan for urban renewal makes Luisa strongly believe that she could make something wonderful for the people who already live in the area. Growing plants could change lives. Something so simple could achieve so much but that’s only if she has willing volunteers to help her and given the nature and feel of the area Luisa isn’t so sure that can be achievable, but she is willing to give it a try. She will use Reuben’s life insurance money to get the project off the ground and from this point on you can see that there is a fire and determined spirit about her that once ignited will prove challenging to quash.

Sharon Gosling introduces the reader to numerous characters apart from Luisa and they all go on to play vital roles in the overall plot and themes explored within the story. It could have been a case that there were too many characters and their stories would have become difficult to follow but instead there is a lovely, real and natural flow to everything that I felt meant everyone and every event that occurs slots in perfectly to the story. Cas runs the local gym for teenagers who have nowhere else to go. But like with everything in Collaton, he has an uphill battle to keep the gym open with a distinct lack of funds not to mention all the different problems that the teenagers have. The gym provides an outlet for them and Cas is a remarkable character. He is a teacher in the local school and has really empathy with the situations his pupils find themselves in which also really helps him when it comes to running the gym. I adored Cas as a character. To me he was just like a giant teddy bear that you would want to embrace you and have you feel that everything was going to turn out all right no matter how difficult things appeared. I admired the way he dealt with all the rage of characters and misfits that he encounters through his work at the gym. He gave them a safe space and made them feel welcome and valued and none more so than troubled teen Harper.

Harper has had to become an adult way before her time. She has to care for her younger brother Max whilst her father is an alcohol fuelled daze most of the time and at the same time try and keep up with her studies. She loves anything to do with cars and engines and it’s easy to tell there is a bright future ahead of her in this area. Nothing is specifically said about Max but I could tell from the way he was written and how Harper acted with him that he was someone who did have something that made him need to adhere to strict routines and regulations. He harbours a little secret which when it does come to the fore proved to be very heart-warming and pivotal to the overall plot. Harper loves him dearly and does her best for him but it’s not easy trying to balance school and home life when the responsibility for everything lies solely at your door. She is under enormous pressure and this came across in her gruff manner but underneath it all you can see that she does have a heart of gold. If given the chance like the flowers in the garden she would grow and flourish and turn into a wonderful person.

Cas insists as part of Harper’s community service that she must help Luisa with the garden. A tentative friendship is formed but I sensed that one wrong step from Luisa and Harper would throw up her defensive walls once again. Luisa struggles to get volunteers to help herself and Harper with the garden and the entire community seem to be against the project. There are several dark and sinister things that occur and at times the book took on a murky feeling and in a way it’s good that harsh and grim topics aren’t overlooked. Rather, they were handled in a good way that slotted in well to the overall story. It’s not all dark moments by any means more so the light outshines the gloom and Luisa keeps going with her project to show that that the garden can become addictive and therapeutic and in doing so she helps herself as well. It shows that a sense of community can be built and through people coming together a difference can be made. For all involved, Luisa, Harper, Cas and so many more they go on an inspiring and heart-warming journey that provides you with an enjoyable read that has you looking forward to the next story from this very talented author as you soon as you reach the final word

Vad hände, en så bra början men sen, vad var det för slut? Hur slutade det? Blev allt bra mellan Luisa och Cas? Boken lämnar en med så många frågetecken och förvirring att det drog ner betyget. Hade kanske för stora förhoppningar om boken.

Gillade författarens förra bok, Bokhandeln i fyrtornet , så tänkte att den här nog va i samma anda. Tyvärr inte. Där den förra hade en mer intressant bakgrundshistoria om uppförandet av fyren saknar denna bok samma sorts historisk koppling. Den här berättelsen visar mer på hur engelsmännens förkärlek för trädgårdar och hur man med gemensamma och ihärdiga krafter kan göra en trädgård till ett samhälleligt projekt.

De prachtige en uitnodigende cover en titel van het boek is mijn interesse voor het boek gewekt. Persoonlijk moet ik zeggen dat ik door de stijl van de cover in eerste instantie zou gaan om een roman of historische roman en geeft de cover me niet direct het feelgood gevoel. Maar misschien maakt dat het juist tot een bijzondere en originele feelgood. De schrijfster Sharon Gosling is voor mij ook nog onbekend, waardoor ik niet precies een idee heb wat ik kan verwachten.


We volgen het verhaal van Luisa MacGregor. In haar tienerjaren had ze samen met haar grote liefde een droom voor ogen. Ze wilde grote stukken grond in achterstandswijken omtoveren tot levendige buurttuinen. Ze is afgestudeerd als succesvol landschapsarchitect maar na alle gebeurtenissen in haar leven is ze beland bij een baan die haar totaal niet bevalt. Dan belt een oude bekende met het verhaal dat hij een stuk grond voor haar beschikbaar heeft en met de vraag of Luisa haar droom van een buurttuin nog altijd wil realiseren. Luisa is vastbesloten om samen met Cas, de lokale leerkracht van een boksschool, en Harper, een tiener met heftige problemen, de buurttuin tot een succes te maken. Luisa's zelfvertrouwen is alleen wat wankel. Zal het haar uiteindelijk lukken de gemeenschap tot elkaar te brengen? En zal er tussen haar en Cas wat opbloeien?


Wat een bijzonder, ontroerend en erg meeslepend verhaal. Sharon Gosling heeft een erg levendige en meeslepende schrijfstijl en weet in haar gevoel enorm veel emotie en gevoel te leggen. Wel vond ik het persoonlijk iets minder een feelgood en meer een roman, maar het was wel een boek dat me echt wist te pakken.

We volgen Luisa's verhaal. Luisa, maar ook de andere personages zijn erg realistische, natuurlijke en goed uitgewerkte personages. Het zijn stuk voor stuk personages die uniek en verschillend zijn, maar die je weten te raken. Het zijn namelijk allemaal heel bijzondere personages met een achtergrond en diepgang. Dat maakt het verhaal erg aangrijpend en laat de gebeurtenissen bij je binnenkomen.

De verhaallijn kent een mooie opbouw, waarbij eerst Luisa en haar huidige situatie goed worden uitgewerkt. Wanneer Luisa een telefoontje krijgt en de kans om haar lang gekoesterde droom werkelijkheid te laten worden gaat het verhaal voor mijn gevoel echt van start. De personages die ze hierbij ontmoet worden hierdoor op natuurlijke wijze geïntroduceerd en vormen een prachtige bijdrage aan de kracht van de verhaallijn. Gedurende het verhaal zien we Luisa een prachtige groei van vallen en opstaan doormaken, wat het verhaal erg indrukwekkend maakt. Dit geldt trouwens niet enkel voor Luisa, ook andere personages doen mooie levenslessen op. Het verhaal wordt anders dan ik had verwacht afgesloten, maar ik ben zeker niet teleurgesteld.

De vergeten buurttuin is een prachtige, aangrijpende en meeslepende feelgood/roman. Het is levendig en vlot geschreven en Sharon Gosling weet de personages erg realistisch en op sterke wijze neer te zetten. Daarbij heeft ieder personage iets unieks, dat het verhaal des te bijzonderder maakt. Het verhaal heeft een indrukwekkende verhaallijn, waarin vele levenslessen verborgen zitten. Het is een prachtig verhaal dat je zonder twijfel weet te ontroeren.

Gärtnern verbindet

Das war mein erstes Buch von Sharon Gosling. Ich mochte ihren Schreibstil sehr und auch die Geschichte wäre zauberhaft und hatte so viele schöne Aussagen!

Sharon Gosling führt neben der Protagonistin Luisa zahlreiche weitere Charaktere ein, die alle eine wichtige Rolle in der Handlung spielen, die in der Geschichte behandelt werden. Es hätte sein können, dass es zu viele Charaktere sind, um allen folgen zu können. Aber stattdessen liest sich alles auf eine schöne, echte und natürliche Weise, sodass meiner Meinung nach jeder Einzelne Charakter perfekt in die Geschichte passt.

Ein zweiter ich nenne es mal eher Hauptprotagonist ist Cas.
Er leitet den örtlichen Boxring für Teenager, die nirgendwo anders hingehen können. Er ist hilfsbereit und versucht alles möglich zu machen, was in seiner Macht steht.
Cas ist eine bemerkenswerte Figur. Er ist Lehrer an der örtlichen Schule und hat wirklich Mitgefühl mit den Situationen, in denen sich seine Schüler befinden, was ihm auch sehr hilft, wenn es darum geht, das Fitnessstudio zu leiten. Ich habe Cas als Figur geliebt. Für mich war er wie ein riesiger Teddybär, den man umarmen möchte und der einem das Gefühl gibt, dass alles gut wird, egal wie schwierig die Dinge erscheinen. Ich bewunderte, wie er mit der Wut der Charaktere und Außenseiter umging, denen er bei seiner Arbeit im Fitnessstudio begegnete. Er gibt ihnen einen sicheren Raum und sorgte dafür, dass sie sich willkommen und geschätzt fühlten, und das galt besonders für die problematische Teenagerin Harper.

Harper musste viel zu früh erwachsen werden. Sie muss sich um ihren jüngeren Bruder Max kümmern, während ihr Vater die meiste Zeit alkoholisiert ist, und gleichzeitig versuchen, mit ihrer Schule Schritt zu halten. Sie liebt alles, was mit Autos und Motoren zu tun hat, und man kann leicht erkennen, dass ihr in diesem Bereich eine glänzende Zukunft bevorsteht. Über Max wird nichts Konkretes gesagt, aber ich konnte an der Art, wie er geschrieben wurde und wie Harper mit ihm umging, erkennen, dass er jemand war, der autistische Züge hatte, das ihn dazu zwang, sich an strenge Routinen und Vorschriften zu halten. Er hütet ein kleines Geheimnis, das sich, als es ans Licht kommt, als sehr herzerwärmend und entscheidend für die Gesamthandlung herausstellte.
Harper liebt ihn innig und tut ihr Bestes für ihn, sie steht unter enormem Druck, was sich in ihrer schroffen Art widerspiegelt, aber darunter erkennt man, dass sie ein großes Herz hat. Wenn man ihr die Chance gäbe, würde sie zu einer wunderbare Person erblühen.

Neben dem Gartenprojekt und wie die Gemeinde darauf reagiert und Louise damit umgeht passieren auch spannende und mal auch dramatische Dinge, die dem Buch eine zusätzlichen auftrieb gaben.

Für alle Beteiligten, Luisa, Harper, Cas und so viele andere, ist es eine inspirierende und herzerwärmende Reise, es wäre fast ein 5 Sterne Buch geworden, aber die letzten Ereignisse / Kapitel haben mich etwas frustriert. Bzw. das Verhalten von Louisa, ich hätte es verstanden, wenn sie es aufgrund ihrer Vergangenheit gemacht hätte, aber die Begründung hat mir nicht gereicht, um 2 Jahre ins Land ziehen zu lassen...

Dennoch ein sehr schönes Buch, dass ich empfehlen kann!

‘De vergeten buurttuin’ gaat over veel meer dan tuinieren alleen. Sharon Gosling koos ervoor om bloemen, planten en alles wat nog bij tuinieren hoort te gebruiken om een mooi, meeslepend verhaal te vertellen. Het wordt gauw duidelijk dat de 36-jarige Luisa het niet gemakkelijk heeft. Haar huidige job als assistente van de bazige Marianne is niet haar droom. Mede door haar zusje Jo beseft ze Luisa dat van een verwaarloosd fabrieksterrein een buurttuin maken wél iets is dat haar gelukkig zou maken. Als Luisa begint aan haar klus in het kustdorpje Collaton blijkt dat dromen verwezenlijken iets is dat niet zomaar vanzelf gaat. Gelukkig krijgt ze veel hulp van sportleerkracht Cas en de tiener Harper.

Luisa, Cas en Harper zijn de belangrijkste personages in het boek. We beleven het verhaal vanuit hun standpunt, al ligt de focus nog iets meer op Luisa en Harper. Gosling heeft een mooi evenwicht gecreëerd tussen de verschillende perspectieven, waardoor je geboeid blijft. Zowel Luisa als Harper hebben elk hun portie ellende achter de rug. Luisa is vroeg haar man Reuben verloren en Harper heeft een complexe thuissituatie. Ze staat alleen voor de opvoeding van haar broertje Max, want hun vader ligt quasi altijd dronken op de sofa. De band tussen Luisa en Harper wordt vooral gestimuleerd door Cas. Daarom is het fijn om af en toe te lezen wat hij denkt. Hij is een man die kinderen met moeilijkheden een eerlijke kans wil geven, waardoor je hem algauw sympathiek vindt. De relaties tussen die drie personages krijgen langzaam vorm. Je krijgt voldoende tijd om iedereen te leren kennen.

Daar schuilt meteen ook de sterkte van het boek. Gosling vertelt het verhaal op een rustige, geloofwaardige manier. Ze geeft haar personages de kans om te groeien en zichzelf te ontdekken. Zo is de rouw van Luisa erg realistisch beschreven. Op rouwen staat geen tijdspanne, ook al wordt dat soms wel van ons verwacht. Dat het oké is zo lang te rouwen als het nodig is, is hier een belangrijke boodschap. Luisa’s verhaal ontroert je, maar dat doet Harpers leven ook. Wat veel verantwoordelijkheid hebben doet met een tiener, vertelt Harper ons.

Naast rouw, de opbloei van een droevige gemeenschap en vroeg volwassen zijn speelt het thema ecologie hier ook een belangrijke rol. Gosling maakt haar lezers bewust van het belang van de natuur. Op een subtiele manier leert ze ons via haar vlotte schrijfstijl wat het effect kan zijn van tuinieren en natuurlijke vormen van filtering. Zo geeft Gosling ons meer uitleg over mycelium, een netwerk van schimmeldraden. Dat zorgt voor de afbraak van schadelijke stoffen zoals pesticiden. Ook al ken je niets van hiervan, Gosling leert je iets bij op een toegankelijke manier. Dat maakt van ‘De vergeten buurttuin’ een interessant verhaal, dat mooi verweven is met een vleugje romantiek en ellende.

Conclusie
5 sterren
‘De vergeten buurttuin’ is een realistisch boek met sympathieke personages. Gosling heeft een vlotte schrijfstijl, dit verhaal ontroert je sowieso.

I really enjoyed it. Gosling is a very competent writer, which is always reassuring, I think. It's so nice to read something by someone who knows what they're doing.

There are some lovely descriptions in this, especially of plants and gardening - which I always enjoy in fiction. And I think she writes 'community' really nicely - as in her previous novel, The Lighthouse Bookshop, it is indeed 'the friendships we made along the way' that are important in everyone's journeys in The Forgotten Garden. (The title made me think it would be about the rediscovering of an existing garden, btw, and it totally isn't, but whatever.)

Luisa has been barely doing more than existing since the death of her husband. Given the opportunity to develop a community garden in a run down little town on the Cumbrian coast, she doesn't exactly leap at the chance. Once she sees the site, though, and seeing as how she's just lost her job (her boss is a genuinely unpleasant creation, I was relieved to see the back of her) she may as well get on with it, right? There's a good mixture of characters here, from originally hostile but slowly thawing neighbours to the scrappy kids who hang out at the gym across from the garden site. This is run by Cas, who also teaches at the local school and tries to make a difference to teenagers who are flailing in a place that seems to have been left behind. He's quite handsome, which Luisa is determined to ignore. One of his troubled teens is Harper, mechanical genius with an autistic brother, an alcoholic dad, and a lot of attitude. She's a properly great character, I'd read another book about her. It's Harper's life, which teeters riskily on the edge of colleapse and despair, that drives the more dramatic elements of the story. (Some of it's really quite tense.)

Can Luisa make a garden here? Can Harper stay in school? Can Luisa move on from the anguish of her husband's death? Will her sister get a good frock for her wedding? Will Cas and Luisa ever be more than friends? The answers to these questions are perhaps not unexpected but the story is very enjoyable. Recommended.

Luisa hat ihr Leben nach dem Unfalltod ihres Mannes nur mühselig wieder aufnehmen können, zu sehr schmerzt sie der Verlust. In ihrem Job als Sekretären in einem Gartenbauunternehmen ist sie zwar nicht glücklich, aber halbwegs zufrieden. Doch eines Tages macht ihr der Patenonkel ihres verstorbenen Mannes ein Angebot, das sie zwar zuerst abschreckt, aber dem sie am Ende doch nicht widerstehen kann.

Sie beginnt in einer Kleinstadt einen Gemeinschaftsgarten aufzubauen, mit Hilfe der Bevölkerung. Allerdings muss sie auch mit viel Ablehnung kämpfen und ohne die Unterstützung von Cas und Harper hätte sie wohl recht schnell aufgegeben.

Dieses Buch von Sharon Gosling hat mir wieder gut gefallen. Wie schon im Vorgänger lässt die Autorin sehr unterschiedliche Charaktere aufeinandertreffen. Harper hat es nicht leicht, ihr Bruder ist sehr eigen, der Vater alkoholsüchtig und zu nichts zu gebrauchen. Luisa versucht trotzt der Kratzbürstigkeit Harpers ihr eine Zukunft zu zeigen, an die Harper nicht wirklich glauben mag. Cas dagegen ist ein Lehrer aus Leidenschaft, der es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht hat, Kindern aus schwierigen Verhältnissen ein wenig Halt zu geben.

Der Perspektivwechsel zeigen ganz deutlich wie wenig man Menschen anmerkt wie verunsichert sie oft in ihrem Inneren sind. Gerade bei Luisa und Harper wird das ganz deutlich, die beide nach außen sehr tough wirken und im Inneren doch unglaublich verletzlich sind.

Alles in allem war es ein sehr schönes Buch, das ich gerne gelesen habe. Und das Cover ist, wie bei den beiden Vorgängern auch schon, einfach toll. Von daher von mir eine Leseempfehlung!

De cover van dit boek een typische historische roman cover. Wat dus absoluut niet past bij dit boek want dit boek is op en top feelgood. Op basis van alleen de cover had ik dit boek noooit gekozen. Op basis van de achterflap dan juist weer wel en dat is waarom ik dit boek wilde lezen

De personages worden goed uitgediept in dit verhaal en Sharon neemt dan ook echt de tijd om Luisa, Cas en Harper goed aan bod te brengen zodat de lezer ze goed leert kennen, omdat je cvanuit alle drie de perspectieven leest. Dat vind ik persoonlijk erg fijn.
Door dat je de personages goed kent leef je enorm met ze mee als zij voor lastige keuzes staan die hun verleden weer aan bod brengen. Zo hebben Luisa, Cas en Harper problemen met openstellen en willen ze alles bij zichzelf houden kwa gevoel.

Het is een super mooi, sterk, rauw en een realistisch verhaal. Het boek leest erg vlot en de verschillende onderwerpen in dit boek zijn erg origineel. Sharon heeft het goed gedaan om kwetsbare onderwerpen zo mooi te verwerken in verschillende verhalen. Dit boek heb ik gelezen met een lach en een brok in mijn keel.

What a wonderful book about the strength in community and starting over.
Luisa is still reeling after the untimely death of her husband, she is floundering and is just working to pass the time, rather than do what she loves and trains to do. She is offered the chance to start a community garden in a run down town, she decides to give it a go, but not everyone is happy for her to be there.
This book was everything I like in a book, starting over in her 30s, small towns, community spirit it was just so heartwarming.
There was also some hardhitting subjects covered including grief, county lines, poverty and these were woven into the story so well and made me angry and worried on more than one occasion.
Highly recommend and I shall be checking out some more of this authors work soon.

Luisa träffade sin man under utbildningen till landskapsarkitekt, men de hinner knappt få sin examen förrän han hastigt rycks ifrån henne.
I och med det sätter hinner sina drömmar på paus eftersom de är så starkt förknippade med Reuben.
Men så erbjuder hans gudfar, Owen, henne en fastighet som inte kan bebyggas och menar att hon ska använda den till parets dröm - en trädgård för grannskapet.
Hon är inte helt sugen på det hela, men går med på att titta på tomten. Och ser dess potential.
Hon får hjälp av Cas som driver ett slags fritidsgård för ungdomarna i grannskapet.
Men det är inte en lätt uppgift, inser hon.

The plot

Our story opens with our lead character, Louis MacGregor, looking out over the Austen-like grounds of Feldspar Hall, a stately home. She accompanies her boss Marianne, a self-serving lady who heads up Boswell Garden Architecture. Luisa loves gardens and plants and has created some impressive ideas, which she sketched on her iPad. It is a pad that her boss takes from her when Caroline, the stately home's owner, takes delight in the colour scheme and a hidden bower. They are all Luisa's ideas, but Marianne presents them as hers. It is a life she has gotten used to, hiding her own gardening training and talent away to avoid the pain of better, happier days and a marriage that ended with the death of Reuben, her husband, in a climbing accident.

When Luisa returns to the small townhouse in Carlisle she shares with her soon-to-be-wed younger sister, Jo, she reveals she has had a telephone call from Reuban's Godfather, Owen.

Owen cares for Luisa and is cognisant of the project she and Reuben wanted to undertake to create a community garden scheme before he died. When he finds he has acquired a block of worthless wasteland in a company acquisition, it seems the perfect chance to kick the long-buried project into action and raise Luisa from her self-imposed drudgery.

The idea seems to end when Luisa declines, not wishing to open old memories and wounds. But, after a rather curt demand from her boss, and with a bit of persuasion from Jo that she really should go; after all, what harm could it do, plus it could be the galvanizing she needs to break away from Marianne, Luisa heads for the derelict land that could be the home of a new community project.

When she arrives at Collaton, a town on the Cumbrian west coast, it is a bleak and wintery wet day. The town was never a tourist attraction. Even in its heyday, it merely served as a place to house the workers of refineries and shipyards nearby. Now, with boarded-up shops and closed pub, it was little more than a ghost town, and the people survived as best they could in a community without a centre. But no, I take that back, for amid the slow urban decay, one man was trying to bring hope to the town's youngsters. Casimir Pattanyús, Cas to his pals, a teacher by day, runs a boxing club for the kids in the evenings. With only his wage to run the place, it seems there is little hope that the spirit the club engenders will survive another year.

When Luisa's borrowed car gets a puncture in the gloom, it is Cas and 17-year-old Harper, a bright lass with an attitude, come to her rescue. Well, it is Harper who, with a skill for all things mechanical, gets to change the tyre.

Now, behind the scenes, Harper lives with her 9-year-old brother, Max. A brighter lad you could never hope to meet. He doesn't really mix with others and has a single-minded focus on his latest hobby. But his current passion of gardening, and lack of understanding, get him into trouble with the neighbour from whom he'd been taking some fresh bedding plants and compost. She is understanding, but it is wearing thin. Luisa also manages to stop the police from being called when Max tries to take a gardening magazine from the newsagent. It said 'FREE' on the cover. To Max, this means the whole magazine is free; else, why would they say it? But of course, the 'free' is related to the gift on the outside and not the magazine.

With a drunk father at home, who clearly doesn't understand Max, Harper looks after her brother and cooks and cares. Given the reputation she has, nobody dares tease or bully Max. Doing her A-Level exams and trying to work part-time at the gym, and at a local garage to earn the money they need to get by is tough. But Harper has the grit to match her determination. Never more so when it comes to protecting Max from the nastiness that is the world outside his own.

But there is a downside: she has had to steal small things to help Max. It has got her into trouble, and she is only saved by Cas stepping in to convince the shops she pinched marker pens for Max from that community service at the gym was way better than the police. If the authorities found out about the situation at home, they would be split up. Now that is a heap load of pressure.

When Luisa sees in her mind that Reuben would have taken the plunge, she resigns from Marianne's employ and takes Owen up on his offer. They will try for six months. If the garden project fails, Owen, who has many contacts far and wide, will ensure Luisa gets a job. It really is a win-win. Better yet, she can finally put Reuben's insurance money into a project they both wanted to create and not just leave it languishing in a bank account. What better way to honour his memory?

What Luisa needs is to get the garden up and running. A community project first needs the community to come together, see the worth of what is to be achieved, and then get involved. With Harper as an unwilling helper to work off her community service hours on the project, they make a start.

Now, no story would be complete without a villain. This story's villain comes in the form of one Darren Dixon, recently out of prison and thinking he can make a name for himself for nefarious acts like selling drugs. He is also Harper's cousin and her enemy for trying it on with her. Worse, he has a grudge against Casimir and is determined to get even, one way or another.

When Darren and his posse of wannabe small-town thugs make a grand entry at the gym where Luisa is holding a meeting to push the garden idea, he and Cas have a standoff. It seems like hollow bravado especially given Cas is still built like the boxer he once was. But the stink of trouble Darren brings is enough to send the few interested townsfolk scattering, and with them, any hope of help goes.

With the main characters assembled, this is where the story takes off. Harper has to make a decision that ultimately spirals out of control. Other characters, too, make choices, the end of which could destroy them or be their making. One thing is certain: come the end of one night not far from this point, nobody in Collaton will ever be the same.

OK, so I can't really say much more. Suffice it to say we were gripped and not disappointed. As Mrs H wanted me to say, "the pleasure and devil are in the plot weaving to date and what follows." Whether the community ultimately pull together and the garden built, is for you all to discover. . . .

So, what did we think?

A book beautifully grounded in real-life situations, reflections of what is and could be, and things most of us will have seen or experienced wherever we may live.

Heartfelt and written with a sense of credibility, person and place. It is good to see disabled representation, too, for a key player. Sharon's gardening passion is quite evident in the text, adding a palpable flavour.

The beauty of this book for us was, whilst we don't do romantic fiction as a rule, there is so much more going on that the story takes on a larger vista driven by the subplots of Max, Harper, Casimir, and Luisa, which all came together beautifully and dramatically towards the end. And the final chapter is not what I expected either, which is always a pleasant surprise. Mrs H said she had an inkling of things that might happen later when the adventure entered the town's scrap yard, but that was all.

So . . . . Crunch time.

This fun, easy read enthraled and captured our senses immediately. Like 'The Lighthouse Bookshop', Sharon's previous and second novel we reviewed last year has the same compelling storytelling air.

Not to put any pressure on Sharon's busy schedule, but I can't wait for the next tale, whatever it may be.

En roman om sorg og om hvordan sorgen kan trænge dybt ind i sjælen. Og så er det en roman om sammenhold og om hvordan fællesskabet kan løfte et område eller en by til noget helt særligt.

Luisa er uddannet landskabsarkitekt, men har aldrig brugt sin uddannelse. Da hun i en meget ung alder blev gift og kort efter, mistede sin højtelskede mand, opgav hun alle sine drømme. I stedet har hun nu i årevis, levet med at være sekretær for en irriterende og ikke særlig dygtig landskabsarkitekt. Men så en dag......

Det er en fin roman. Jeg blev dog aldrig helt grebet af historien, trods det, at den kom omkring mange forskellige emner, der nok er værd at dykke ind i.

Throughly enjoyed this book and didn’t want to put it down.

I really routed for all of the main characters, Luisa the widow who sets up the garden. Caz the local teacher who wants the children under his supervision to thrive and of course Harper who has been taken under Caz’s wing, despite all the odds.

The imagery of the garden taking shape made it really easy to visualise, I enjoyed the neighbourhood working together for the greater good to get the garden back on track.

This is the second story I’ve read by Sharon Gosling and it certainly won’t be my last.

Leider hat mir die Storyline nicht so gut gefallen, wie die letzten zwei Bücher. Sie wirkte irgendwie flach und Harpers Plot fand ich etwas vorhersehbar und kindisch (ja, sie ist ein Kind, aber trotzdem). Ich mag einfach nicht die Plots mit einem Problem, was eigentlich keins ist, wenn man den Mund aufmacht. Die Idee mit dem Gemeinschaftsgarten finde ich aber süß.
