Flight
Murderous uncle, magical portal, talking animals and demons from the Underworld. It's enough to drive any sane person crazy. In a small town at the base of the Uintah Mountains, best friends, Kiera and Dustin, are running for their lives. After barely escaping strange creatures that can only be described as demons from Hell, they discover their parents have been murdered by Kiera's biological uncle, Exar, and he is now after them. Not knowing where else to go, they hide in the only place they can think of. The cave. No one ever goes near the cave. While hiding inside, they unravel the mystery of a portal and are whisked away to another world where they find they have magical abilities. But this is Exar's world, and he still wants them dead. This is book 1 in the completed Ceramia trilogy and ends in a cliff hanger.

I will admit that I'm not normally a fan of the fantasy genre. As a measure of full disclosure, I will put that I got this book on a free download, and that I am personally acquainted with the author, who has worked long and hard to publish this novel and the ones that follow. This is not an off-the-cuff self-published book, as suggested by another reviewer. Yes, it contains elements of conflict and magic, etc. (Hello! That's what it says in the book description, so it should not come as a surprise to anyone to find them in the book.)
I would rate this book at a little more than a 4, but I had to round off. There were a few typographical errors that were missed by the editor; not a big problem like in some books where the spelling is so atrocious that I can't get past the first page. The language is clean, so it's a kid-worthy book. There is a lot of violence if you're opposed to that sort of thing. People and creatures die in bloody battles. I wasn't too crazy about the cliff-hanger ending. I would much prefer to have this "episode" mostly wrapped up before venturing into the next "episode." Instead, it just sort of stops with a "to be continued" closing.
On the plus side, the characters were well-defined and developed. The descriptions of the action and plot drew me in, and in some places it was a real page-turner. I enjoyed the interactions between the humans and the other creatures and life forms, and how they interact with each other. Ms. Taylor is a very talented up-and-coming new author. I almost forgot -- there's also some romance in there.
This author has a real potential and a great talent for writing. This is a terrific first novel! Well done, Sherry!

Great fantasy read
Great read full of action. Young love and magic abounds in this story. It's hard to put down once you start reading.

I appreciate the effort but not enough thought went into the world building especially with the animals talking subplot

Flight is a wonderful book. Sherry has spun a tale that is easy to follow yet expands your imagination. Excellent read. I can't wait for the next one.

This has a great story. However I really didn't like the writing style, there was WAYYY to many perspectives and it was too fast paced for me!!! But the story is AMAZING! Will read the second!

This was recommended to me by the author's nephew so I was cautious but I really liked it. Easy read, good story.
