For those gravitating towards domestic suspense The Husband Killer is a non-stop roller coaster of wedded turmoil.

The story focuses on six recent widows whose lives are suddenly upended because of a serial killer targeting their abusive partners. Two determined police detectives, several children, and multiple deceased husbands create a full cast but not too large to lose track.

Trigger warnings abound for the domestic abuse suffered by the main characters throughout the book - it’s not easily skirted around as it’s not confined to one or two sections.

The women’s husbands are easily despised characters but someone has gone to the extreme and meted out their own brand of justice in the form of murder.

Who that person could be forms the investigation of the two detectives without much success at the beginning. A few of the widows collaborate on theories creating a dichotomy between those women working together and a couple of mean girl types in their small group.

Overall, a very enjoyable read! From Kindle Unlimited.

Mixed feelings. Review to follow.

Who is the crossed hearts serial killer?

A rather unique serial killer is on the loose. He only murders husbands – abusive husbands – husbands who beat their wives.

On paper this looked like my kind of book. It’s certainly should’ve been . Yet I have mixed feelings. I didn’t really enjoy reading it that much. I think I know why.

First, let me talk about the good. It is a great subject matter on which to base a book. The POV is told from the point of view of three different characters. They are all wives of these abusive men.

Trigger alerts include physical abuse.

The aspects that I enjoyed was the back stories of some of the women and the characters themselves some of whom I definitely had strong opinions on!

It’s also a very readable book. I definitely see that most of the ratings are positive and mine is kind of positive. I didn’t dislike it. You will get hooked almost immediately, and want to know who the murderer is.

Here’s the thing though. I expected it to be way darker and more sinister than it wound up being.

Parts of the book for me read like a big chat -athon between the women and their kids. It’s not that I don’t like children in my books, believe me.

But there were so many in this one! And it was distracting. I can’t tell you how many times I’d be getting into the book and then a scene would pop out of nowhere with one of the children running into the room and stuff about toys and this child, and that child and I didn’t really enjoy that aspect of it to be honest.

I thought it would be more of a dark, brooding, insidious, slow, walk into creepy.

At times I felt I was reading more of a family drama about mothers and kids than a mystery or thriller. As such, I mildly enjoyed this, but it really wasn’t the best pick for me.

SPOILERS

The other reason I couldn’t get into it so much was because I was waiting for the book to do something all domestic thrillers seem to do these days and that is not a criticism of the writer. In other reviews, I’ve mentioned that I’ve been away from the domestic thriller genre for a while, and since I’ve come back, which was recently, it seems that all books feature an unreliable narrator, who is not what the reader thinks they are and all is revealed in the last couple of pages of the book.

Of course, that happened with this ending too. I guess I’m going to have to accept that domestic thrillers have changed in between my brief break from the genre and my coming back.

Virtually every thriller I’ve read lately has the same ending. They feature an unreliable, narrator , and then, in the last two pages, maybe even in the last half page, one finds out at the unreliable narrator had a hand in the crime, after all!

Again, this is not directed toward this writer. It’s kind of every book in this genre lately that I’ve been reading. I guess I’m going to have to accept it though, because I cannot seem to find any domestic thrillers that do not have this kind of ending.

If you’re still with me through the spoilers, then yes, I would recommend this book. It’s rare that I see a thriller with so many positive reviews!

That’s what made me want to read this in the first place. And there’s really nothing that was not well written about it. For me it all comes down to personal preference and books that have those plots where the kids are featured so heavily almost as much as the mystery element. They’re just not my cup of tea . I would still rate this 3.5 stars and recommend it.

This book shows women at their mean girl best and gave me a nice 'underdog takes all' high. Plenty of action and twists and turns, especially at the end. Good book.

Narrated by Lyssa Browne, Tracie Frank and Laurel Lefkow

THE HUSBAND KILLER is a story about 5 women, Joslyn, Crystal, Lexi, Maureen and Shara, who are all victims of domestic violence. Now they have another thing in common - their husbands are dead, killed by someone who is targeting abusive husbands. One of the wives reached the breaking point and killed her husband? The police seem to suspect it, so the widows have to take up on their own investigation...

This story managed to capture me from the beginning. I liked how the victims came together, supported each other. They realized they weren't alone, someone else understood what they went through. They had hope that things could get better, they can start healing. I've never understood abusive husbands. Yes, life is stressful, but go running or buy yourself a punching bag to relieve your stress!

The story was told from different perspectives, so at first it was tricky to keep track of them, but I soon got hold of who's who. All women were different and I liked some of them better, but to my surprise I could sympathize with most of them, at the same time I kept wondering who was the killer and how it all comes together.

A very average read with a need for editing as incorrect names used at times as well as missing words.

Can't cope with crime novels these days with gruesome murders but the victims in this are unsympathetic so that was all right.
I enjoyed that it was set in the US, the descriptions of the homes - movies in the basement, the food everybody was eating, even that everybody was offered milk AND creamer with their coffee.
Thought early on that the victims could be chosen via someone providing medical care.

This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed her writing style and all the twists and turns. It really kept me guessing until the final gasp worthy page. I will definitely be reading more of Sonya Bateman's books and anyone who is a fan of psychological suspense should do the same.

Too many characters introduced all at once and far too much going on. I never got into this at all and felt like I was carrying on reading for the sake of it.

The premise of this book really intrigued me, but unfortunately it was a bit of a let down for me. The writing style and relationships between the women felt kitschy and I couldn’t buy into them. I picked the first twist quite early on so I was basically just reading along waiting for it to happen. I wasn’t on the edge of my seat at all. I didn’t pick the last twist, but I didn’t find it believable or well constructed within the storyline

The book was written well and was predictable. Being someone who was in an unfortunate relationship with one of these monsters and realized I had to get out right when it started was happy with the outcome of the men and was able to connect with the characters. I gave it just 3 stars because it read like a cozy mystery meets the real housewives of What-ever-city with amateur sleuths and a dumb detective who arrests people in a whim.

I don’t think any of this was really surprising. And I found the ‘mothers would do anything for their children’ tiresome. It seemed to me that it started in the middle, which I found irritating. It was an ok book

Eeeehhh this book was fiiiine! Wouldn't particularly recommend it tbh!

The story follows 5 women who's abusive husbands have been murdered. We see the POVs of the wives throughout the book as they navigate the aftermath of the deaths of their abusive husbands, and try to figure out who killed them.

The good: this book was very engaging; I read it in 3 days because I just really wanted to know who the killer was!
I quite enjoyed the horrible deaths that the abusive pieces of shit got; it felt quite satisfying that we knew they had all met the ends they deserved.
There were plenty of twists and turns to keep me entertained (though not all of them were executed that well). I did particularly enjoy one of the twists near the end; I felt it was unexpected enough but there had been a little foreshadowing. The final twist felt a little lazy though.
I quite liked the variety of characters, it felt like all the abused wives in this were different enough and had all been given pretty unique attributes and backgrounds.

The bad: continuing on from the women in this story, I feel like they could have been fleshed out so much more. I would've loved to hear more about their relationships with their husbands and how they had gotten to that point in their lives.
The writing style was not my favourite; some parts just felt quite sloppy to me. At times the writing really took me out of the story.
Now, I don't dislike kids, but I do kind of feel like at odd times it really went into the domestic reality of having kids; the book would spend a few pages just describing the interactions of the mother with her children and it just didn't feel that relevant really. I suppose it could have been a way to try and get us to feel for the women even more and give us some insight into their lives, but for me it fell a little flat.
The unreliable narrator aspect is becoming a little bit repetitive at this point, through no fault of this author obviously, I just feel like I have seen it a few too many times now! I don't feel like it demonstrates particularly good craftsmanship to throw a spanner in the works in the last chapter with no previous hints. I feel like I just missed the element of having spotted lots of odd bits throughout the book and them all coming together and making sense at the end.

As you can see, the bad sadly outweighs the good by a substantial amount 😂 Just not my cup of tea really, though I will give it the fact that I was a little hooked and wanted to figure out the ending.

Bewertung nach Kategorien:

Storyline: 4☆

I found myself unable to put this book down. It beautifully explains the affect domestic violence has on you as well as what its like when you're finally free from your abuser.

This book follows 6 women and their stories of domestic violence and how they felt after their husbands were killed by a serial killer targeting abusive men. It also delves into the investigation into the serial killer and how the women navigate becoming suspects themselves. Each with their own unique motive and story.

In my opinion the true message of this story is the strength victims have, both as individuals and if they come together to work as a team to heal. It shows also the impact having one or more true and loyal friends can have on you when faced with a terrible situation, whether that be abuse or anything else. The importance of friendship is shown beautifully at the end.

There were many surprises as this story unfolded and although I guessed early on who the killer was and did get it right there was a surprise twist in the final chapter that really threw me off.

Although I would recommend to be wary of the triggers this book can bring out I still gave it full star rating, as in my opinion it was one of the best books i've read so far.

Review

I actually love it when a book turns out to be something that's new and fresh. I really found this book to be good I could barely put it down to stop for a minute And I love the concept. I'm just shocked that nobody ever thought of it before. A very interesting read with sympathetic characters. I rooted for the crossed heart killer myself. I also don't believe that Lexi would actually get charged with murder when she been so abused. Maybe intentional manslaughter. But I honestly liked the characters. A very good read. There are many kinds of abuse. I wasn't abused by a husband, but by a father All of his children and his wife emotionally. Fortunately, without help he passed away several years ago. So even though he lived to be 94, He finally got what he deserved.

I liked this. It's a bit sad and I felt bad for all the women - Crystal, Maureen, Shara, Joslyn, Lexi. All have been abused by their husbands. Then their husbands start being killed. I kept changing my mind of who was the killer. But I did not suspect who was actually the killer. Some of it seems a little far-fetched. Like when the women suspected the Detective Mulligan was the killer. Then they suspected one in their group, Maureen. They really had no proof on either of them. Then end was a bit of a twist but felt let down. The killer show no signs of being anything but nice. It still didn't feel wrapped up, and then there is another twist.

3.5*

I will admit that I only picked up this book for the title "The Husband Killer: A totally addictive psychological thriller with a shocking twist". Overall this book was entertaining and an easy book to pick up when you're bored. However since the author included that there was a shocking twist in the title, I went with the most unlikely guess and I was right... -ish. If this book didn't have the last twist it probably would have been lower for me.

The Husband Killer focuses on six widows whose abusive husbands were all killed by the same serial killer The Crossed Hearts Killer.

This book was such a quick and satisfying read. It takes you on a rollercoaster of unexpected twists and turns that throughout the whole book, you are left guessing who really is the killer.

This truly was a chilling mystery that was enjoyable from start to finish.
