A spin-off of the popular Cindy Eller series.

The first book in the Goldie Locke and the Were Bears series.

It's difficult to be taken seriously when you are a member of the Magical community and saddled with the unfortunate name 'Goldie Locke'. It certainly doesn't help if you are also about five feet tall, blond, and most commonly described as 'cute.'. What was a girl to do?

Become one of the most dreaded Magical environmental lawyers of all time?

Goldie isn't there yet, but she's well on her way when a case drags her into uncharted territory-- working with Ordinary officials to figure out why 'unusual' remains are being discovered all around New England.

With her hands full and a new dragon on the way, Goldie's hunches about this case may prove to be all-too true-- this stuff is bad business!

This was (yet another) cute freebie I found from one of the many email lists I subscribe to. I highly recommend that you take advantage of some of those suckers. It's a great way to try out authors that you may not otherwise hear about, without worrying about spending your money on a dud.

Goldie is a witch who works for the three Baehr brothers, as an endangered (magical) animal advocate. She basically investigates poaching and animal trafficking. She also takes in animals and raises them in her home.
So when magical creatures start showing up all dismembered, the Baehr brothers call on Goldie to work with the ordinary police to find the person responsible.
Of course, she has to keep all the magical stuff hush-hush.
Except that the perp pretty much kills the cop she is working with...and she has to use her power to heal him.
So. Yeah, it kind of blows her cover.
But don't worry, he's not only grateful, but he kind of thinks she's hot.
Awwww.
I should mention that she was previously involved with baby Baehr, so when she (sort of) gets involved with Mr. Ordinary cop, we have a nice little love triangle.

Anyway, they soon realize that it's not just magical animals that are the target of this mysterious person, but magical people as well. In fact, it starts to look like Goldie might be the next target...

Cute, with a twist ending that leads into the next book.

Started off as a 3 star read but by the end got downgraded to 2 stars...to be fair, it wasn't a badly written book, it just wasn't my cuppa. It is cutesy ( though the cover, as pretty as it is, totally hoodwinked me! It, IMO def doesn't say cutesy!), and I loved all the animals, ESP the elephant!

But beyond that, I just wasn't all that interested. There's very little depth, and almost no characterization, and neither potential hero ( yep, there's a triangle) was very heroic, IMO....also with so little info on the characters it was also hard to really like any of them.

If I hadn't put this down so many times, I probably would have finished it in a few hours rather than half day it took me.
So yeah, I probably won't read the next book ( though seriously, the elephant was super cute), but again, it's not a bad book...just not my thing.

Loved this novel! The characters were entertaining, especially Goldie! The magical creatures were awesome and so cute (loved the elephant). I really liked the plot and how different it was from other paranormal novels. The author was able to perfectly interweave the magical world and "real" world very convincingly. Highly recommended!!!

Goldie works for the Baehrs brothers who need her to find out who is killing magical creatures before it's too late. With all the magical creatures missing and bodies turning up, she's the lucky winner of a dragon egg. As if hunting down a kill and hatching a dragon isn't enough to keep Goldie busy she's also been partnered with an ordinary human who knows nothing about the magical world.

Goldie has her hands full but it's important to stop whoever is hurting the magic creatures and when she finds a fairy's body among the carnage it's clear that he's hunting more than just creatures. It's while she's with Donavon her ordinary that things spiral out of control forcing her to use her magic to save his life as well as revealing herself. Now she's the one being hunted by a killer. Will she be able to stop him before he can hurt any of her pets? At what cost.

I love Goldie she's the adorable witch who's out to save the magical creatures at any cost even risking her own life. I'm not sure how I feel about Kodi as he's her ex with lots of potentials but he has his own issues. I also like Donavon he accepts learning that there is more than just the human world and I hope to see more of him.

I've had this one on my kindle for a while but never seemed to find the time till now. Baehrly Breathing is a fast paced action packed whirlwind story that captures the heart as well as the imagination. I love the concept of a magical world living hidden from the humans with illusion spells that keep it hidden. I mean how many books have a tiny unicorn named Dumb Butt in them or a pink tiny mastodon who likes to snuggle. The characters are fun, easy to connect with and you can't help loving Goldie. The author has a beautiful writing style that's easy to get lost in Goldie's story and hard to put down as I needed to know how it would end. I can't wait to dive right into the next one. I highly recommend for a quick light read checking her out.

I was given a copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review. I have not read the Cindy Eller series or any of her other books. Reading this book is probably going to change that. Goldie Locke is a bad-ass and I love her spunk and her attitude. She may be cute and little, but she doesn't take any crap from anyone! She does her job, even though it's not the one that she wants, and she's damn good at it. She can handle just about any situation thrown at her. Except when she has to work with an Ordinary - a non-magical human. She's forced to work with him when magical creatures are being stolen and killed - gruesomely. What's strange is that there is no trace or hint of magic at any of the crime scenes or the dump site. So that means that Goldie has to work with an Ordinary because they are most likely dealing with a normal human. The hard part is going to be keeping her cool and keeping him oblivious to the magic world.

This was such a good book and a really great story. I really like the characters and the idea that there is a magical world that exists right along with the human world. Goldie Locke is a great female character - she's got spunk, she's strong and she can kick ass! She isn't reliant on a man to take care of her and she's not pining away woeful of losing her last boyfriend. But, she is a female and there is going to be some sexual tension and sparks when there is a male character. However, it's not overdone and it's not right away as soon as the story starts. I like that. I have already purchased the second book, Baehrly Bitten. If you are not sure if you are going to like it, then pick up a copy of Baehrly Beginning, which is FREE on Amazon. But, I think you're going to like it. I have no complaints about this book! So this one gets 5 books!

Whee!!! (Jumping up and down clapping hands like a five-year-old.) Golden Sunshine Locke, or Goldie Locke as she is better known, is my new favorite “Just For Fun” literary character! Well, anyone who owns two three-headed puppies, several cats, a fluffy zombie Silkie chicken named Fred, and Petunia the miniature pink elephant (well, actually pink mastodon, but that is just being picky) is my kind of girl! And did you know that several types of magical creatures all together are called a “Mayhem”? Again, Whee!

Goldie is an Earth witch, with two PhD’s, one in Zoology and one in Magical Ecosystems, and a law degree. Her job with the Baehr brothers is as one of the “most dreaded Magical environmental lawyers of all time.” Which is rather difficult when you are a five-foot blonde with a terminal case of “cute.” What is a girl to do except learn to be a Master Swordswoman and kick butt on a regular basis?

This is my first introduction to Elizabeth A. Reeves and her Baehrly series, but it certainly won’t be my last. In this edition, Goldie is stuck with an ‘Ordinary’ (non magical) police detective trying to solve the thefts and slaughter of numerous extremely endangered magical creatures. The story is extremely funny in parts, but also made me ache for the loss of such wonderful creatures in such a terrible manner. But, with her Ordinary partner, Donovan, her ex boyfriend Kodi Baehr, the youngest of the Baehr brothers and a total goof-off, and her awesome smart mouth, Goldie handles missing magical creatures, mystery, and mayhem galore.

All in all, I truly enjoyed this first new (to me) book in the series and greatly look forward to the next in the series, Baehrly Bitten. And right now, Baehrly Breathing is FREE ON AMAZON! What's not to like??

I have not yet read any of the books in the Cindy Eller series, but I will certainly be adding them to my TBR now. Baehrly Breathing is a superbly uplifting and humorous story that also has a dash of mystery and suspense; Goldie stole my heart while I least expected it. The author has managed to create an ingenious heroine who is uniquely gifted. Best of all, Ms. Reeves twists common, well-known fairy tale elements into something else entirely – something uncommonly appealing. For me, this resulted in a suspenseful, magical read that genuinely appealed to a rarely felt sense of wonder and whimsy deep within me.

I loved the way in which this story took my imagination hostage and held it start to finish in an iron grip. I read the entire book in a single session just because the writing flowed so smoothly and the mystery was so engaging. There are some delightful romantic bits, as well. However, it is the relationship she enjoys with her motley menagerie of magical pets that set this story apart from the norm. Goldie is a well-defined character with a lot of sass who cares deeply for misfortunate, hunted, and misunderstood magical monsters and other creatures. She ruthlessly defies the odds to preserve and protect those in her care.

This book was given to me by the author in return for my honest review.

I got hooked on this author with her Cindy Eller series and I have to say that I love Goldie just as much! This book is hysterical! There are so many laugh out loud moments, it keeps you wanting more. We only catch a glimpse of Goldie here and there in Cindy's stories so it's nice to continue with the crazy world that Elizabeth Reeves has created. She can't let Cindy have all the fun can she?

What we find in Goldie is not really what I expected and I'm very happy for that. Goldie is fun, tough quirky and of course cute! but don't let her hear you say that! Goldie has to work with an ordinary to find out who is behind a string of murders and kidnappings involving magical creatures. Can she keep the exit of magic safe from her ordinary partner?

Buckle up and hang on because it's a crazy ride!

As much as Goldie will hate me for saying this, I found this book to be quite cute. I've read a lot of drama filled stories lately, so it was nice to have this story to help counter those things. I definitely enjoyed this read and found myself laughing out loud many different times

Goldie is a character that I instantly liked: spunky, adorable, and someone that could kick butt if needed. I found myself wanting to read more of the authors other books just so I could discover her other characters.

One thing I found odd was the lack of drama, but I wouldn't say it was a bad thing - just unexpected. I've read so much drama lately that this was definitely a relief.

If you're looking for a quick and easy read, and a good laugh, this is a great book to read!

I loved the story of Goldie Locke who is a witch. This story had it all magic, humor, and suspense. I love animals so I really loved the pink elephant, the zombie chicken, unicorn, etc. in this book. I loved the characters in this book Goldie, the Were Bears, Donovan, etc. I couldn't put the book down because I wanted to see what happened next. I can't wait to read the next book in this series to see where the story takes us.

A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

I absolutely loved this book. It was adorable and different in nearly every aspect. I loved Goldie, she was tough and intelligent! Between her wit and magical pets, I was laughing almost the whole time. The plot was well thought out and executed flawlessly. Everything flowed easily without any stray dialogue or unneeded details. I will definitely buy the second book;)! Overall, it's a fun light read!

Full Blog Post @Book-Marks the Spot

Oh this book was so short. I read it in about 3 hours. I wish it was longer because I loved every minutes of it. I didn’t want it to end. OK, so we have Goldie Locke who works for the three Baehr’s. I see the irony in this. LOL Someone is killing magical creatures and Goldie is not going to stand by and watch it happen. She was so determined and cared for the animals so deeply, it was hard not to like her. Well, to make things worse for her, she has to work with an Ordinary, which is a human. She is not supposed to let him find out about her, but a lot of things don’t go according to plan. As they get closer to the killer, the killer gets closer to Goldie.

Someone’s time is up and Goldie hopes it isn’t hers.

So I literally can’t wait to start the next book. I want to learn more about Goldie and what she has become, as well as two hot hunks. ;) There were a lot of magical creatures and hopefully in the next, we will learn more about them as well. There were pink elephants, zombie chickens, three headed dogs and much much more. This whole world is new to me, not reading Goldie’s sister’s Cindy’s books. We get to see quite a bit of the world in this one but not all of it. Now, all I need is the second book to continue my love for Goldie and the three Baehrs. :D

Goldie is five feet tall and all attitude. She is an earth witch and a lawyer, who happens to be very short. What she doesn’t make up in height she makes it up in being tough and smart. She knows she is cute and doesn’t like it when people call her that, but she will use it to her advantage if necessary.

Kodi is one of the Baehrs. He is the youngest of the three and has dated Goldie for the past three years, until recently. He really is cute, sweet and cuddly bear. :D Mmmmm He is a little stuck on himself though. That’s why they broke up or as Kodi would say, why she broke up with him when he didn’t want to. I really liked Kodi and I think he really does love Goldie. He just needs to show it more. I also hope she ends up with him. SQUEE

Donovan is the ordinary. He has no magic and is a cop/detective. He is working the case with Goldie to find the sick sick man responsible for all the brutal deaths of the magical creatures. He is one of those guys that go out of their way to look unimpressive, to not be noticed and he is a pro at it. He hardly ever lets his guard down. So when we do see the other side, it makes us like him. :D At first he is a bit of a jerk but once you get to know him, he is an alright guy. Don’t get me wrong, I really like him, but I don’t thin he is right for Goldie.

4 Stars!!!

Gotta love Golidie :)

This series must be read in order. The first book is Baehrly Beginning. This is the second book.

This book fleshes out all the characters from the prequel until they have a life all their own :) You really should read the prequel first Baehrly Beginning (A Goldie Locke and the Were Bears Short Story) as the series must be read in order.

I originally fell in love with Goldie in Elizabeth's How (Not) To series ... I was really excited when she decided to start the spin-off and she definitely delivered on it's promise! I read this book pretty much in one sitting as I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next one Baehrly Bitten (Goldie Locke and the Were Bears #2)!!!! These books are very original and I wish I could live in Goldie's world :)

***This series is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers who enjoy modern fantasy a bit darker than the How (Not) To Series by Reeves with a fractured fairytale vibe and magical mayhem with a dash of romance :)

It's good although I would have preferred not to deal with another romantic triangle. It's so darn clichéd. Who do I love more? Who understands me better? Bleh.

But...

The characters, even tho they're not very fleshed out yet, seem to be amazingly complex and interesting. I think it will be nice to keep knowing them more and more. I also liked the plot and how it was written. Very creative and compelling. The world-building was incredible too. I was a little disappointed tho 'cause everything seemed to point to how bad-ass Goldie really was and then she had her ass kicked by an Ordinary. Okay, so the guy was a psychotic serial killer who knew how to steal magic from others but...she said to everyone she could take care of herself and then had to rely on Kodi and Donovan. Ha. I would've thought it funny if I wasn't feeling so cheated. She wasn't bad-ass at all. A real shame.

I liked the Cindy seller series, and I am thrilled to read the spin off with her sister, Goldie. She is a spunky girl, and despite being too cute to be taken seriously, she has a stubborn streak and a soft heart. When she gets tangled up in a sinister investigation, her true strength of character comes through. I picked up this book as part of a multi book collection. I would recommend this author to others.

I really enjoyed this book. The tie in with Goldilocks and the 3 bears was a nice little touch. I absolutely loved hearing about all the animals that Goldie was fostering. The little pink mastodon, 3 headed dogs, zombie roosters, dragons and more made the story so much more interesting. I would definitely recommend this book to the paranormal lovers out there. This book has magical creatures, witches, were bears and more.

I love Goldie and her crazy menagerie of magical creatures! Goldie takes the fairy tale aspect of the Cindy series twists it and adds some spice. She may look adorable but don't call her cute or you will be in a world of hurt! This spunky sweetheart has brains, beauty and is a martial arts master always fights for whats right. You will definitely love Goldie and all her adventures!

As always Elizabeth drew me into the story and carried me along. To the point that when I read the last sentence I was ready to start the next book in the series. Elizabeth is such an amazing weaver of words. I have read all of her books that I can find and will continue to read whatever she writes in the future. I know that I will be rewarded with an incredible story.

This is Kindle Unlimited.
This is important to me because it is the kind of story/series I don't like. I wouldn't call it a cliff hanger necessarily, but there is no HEA (happily ever after) or even a HFN (happy for now).
There is also a love triangle. In this book, the main character, Goldie Locke, even acknowledges that she is in a triangle and she won't even read love triangle books. At which time I gave an "amen, sister," and kept reading. But if I had been buying the books, I wouldn't have continued buying the books. I feel cliffhangers are "cheating." I want my books to stand alone, whether I have read one or 13 of them.

But I digress.
This is a cute series/cliffhanger grouping. It is fluffy. The fluffiest of fluff. They are mysteries and there are deaths, but they aren't dwelled on and they don't go on for pages and pages like some vampire/werewolf battles.

The main characters are nice, if kind of shallow in description. The background characters are nicely fleshed out. Goldie lives with all sorts of exotic beasts and it is fun to visit with those.

My 3 stars is based on the fact that there really isn't much depth, the fact that it is a cliffie, and the fact that it is a triangle. There are editing mistakes. Wrong words. Misspelled words. If I was listening to this, I would never know that. But reading it, they just kind of jump out at you.

Urban Fantasy is one of my favorite genres, so this was a fun way to while away a few hours. Not sure if it was intentional since this is the first book I've read from this author, but I got some serious Laurell K. Hamilton / Anita Blake vibes. Especially when the "love triangle" was introduced. Not sure if the main character is an author insert / Mary Sure or not, but I did roll my eyes a bit at the "I'm 22 with two phds and a law degree....." bit. While I wasn't blown away by the writing or story, it's good enough that I'll probably grab the subsequent books in the series at some point the next time I need something light to read.

Loved it from beginning to end. Did not expect the final outcome and the book kept you guessing throughout. Goldie is a very strong female character and it nice to see a woman who wants romance but will not fall in bed with anyone who looks handsome. Cant wait to read more and petunia is sooo cute and Fred is just unique a zombie chicken. I love the characters and their growth, want to see them develop and such an easy book to read. Also must stop trying to write reviews post 4 hours sleep

Surprising Unexpected Fun! Loved It!

To say the least this book was a surprise to me. I'm actually not sure what I expected, but what I got was a story full of humor, sexual tension, inventive, quirky characters and action. I can't wait to read the next book! (as soon as I finish this review) Don't let the cover fool you. This is an engaging story that will keep you on your toes wondering what unexpected twist is around the next corner.

A tongue in cheek comedy with a dark center and a fringe of romance thrown in.

Murder of the magical critters moves to murder of magical sentients, putting the whole magical world on edge, and causing Goldie to end up working with a mundane detective to solve the murders. But he almost ends up dead, Goldie saves him, exposing the magical world to a mundane and making Goldie a target for the killer.

I like Cindy Eller better (which always happens with main series and spinoffs; if I read it, first I like it better) but Goldie Locke is okay. I could laugh, but less so than with the other series. It was an okay plot line, but the love triangle threw me off. This book was okay. I have started book two. 3.5 stars.

Dare I say a cute story, about a cute Godilocke! A fantastic plot, full of magic, mystery, drama, and danger. Throw in cute and not so cute magical animals, two guys wanting the same (cute) heroine, and mayhem abounds! Lots of mystery, with missing and murdered magical creatures! Lots of clues, but no answer to who or what is causing the mayhem. Will she survive? Read and see!

What a menagerie of creatures. I loved the unicorns name. Turning a non believer to a believer was less prolonged than expected. A witch struggling to find herself and you ask what could wrong , lots!
