Berith Press sent me a copy of “The Divine Triunity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” by Francis Cheynell in exchange for an honest review.
The Trinity is one of the most fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith. Unfortunately, it is also a doctrine constantly under attack. Whether the Arians of old, Socinianism in the 17th-century, or the Eternal Subordination of the Son (ESS)/Eternal Functional Subordination (EFS) of today, the Trinity is a doctrine that always needs to be understood and defended. This book is one such necessary work from the pen of one of the Westminster Divines.
This book is phenomenal! The typesetting is fresh and readable. The footnotes are helpful and enlightening. It includes the Latin and Greek text, Scripture references, and patristic citations. The content is a wonderful statement and defense of orthodox Trinitarian theology. That’s most of the content of the book. Cheynell uses Scripture, reason, and the church fathers to explain basic Christian doctrine and refute the anti-Trinitarians of his day. Perhaps my favorite portions are chapters 9-10. Cheynell is not content to leave things at defending doctrine. These last two chapters are committed to showing the practical benefits of the Trinity in the Christian life. They are both incredibly sound and refreshingly pastoral. It takes the preceding eight chapters and brings it to a wonderful conclusion. If anyone questions why they should care about getting the Trinity right, they need look no further than these chapters.
This is probably my favorite book on the Trinity. It’s simply a must-read for anyone who wants to grow in their understanding of Christian theology. Berith Press is to be highly commended for making this great work available in such a presentable format.

If you are familiar friends with the Puritans, then this treatment of the ontological essence and nature of the triune Godhead will likewise be familiar ground. This is a great read!
