A notorious outlaw enlists his niece's assistance in a major heist, and she agrees to help him out -- just this once. But when it turns out she's meant to steal data from the Galactic Fleet, she's not sure she'll be allowed to walk away...
--
Secretly, Sloane Tarnish has always admired her outlaw of an uncle and his tales of not-so-legal adventures across the galaxy–but she never thought she'd be asked to help with one of his heists.
When Uncle Vin shows up on her med school campus with a plan to steal a chip full of Fleet intelligence–and the baffling idea to have her play a key role in the scheme–Sloane's got her doubts. Uncle Vin doesn't seem to realize that her top skills involve the kind of shots you drink, not the ones you fire.
But Vin's convinced the Fleet's got plans to install empirical rule across the free galaxy, and that this data could stop them before they can begin. When a bunch of rogue delivery drones start taking shots at her–and not the liquid kind–she has to figure he's onto something.
To prove it, all she needs to do is steal the data key from the middle of a Fleet ball… and right out from under the Commander's nose.
Too bad she's got absolutely no idea what she's doing…

Kate Sheeran Swed loves hot chocolate, plastic dinosaurs, and airplane tickets. She has trekked along the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu, hiked on the Mýrdalsjökull glacier in Iceland, and climbed the ruins of Masada to watch the sunrise over the Dead Sea. She holds degrees in music from the University of Maine and Ithaca College, as well as an MFA in Fiction from Pacific University. Her stories are forthcoming or have appeared in the Young Explorer's Adventure Guide Volume 5, Daily Science Fiction, Electric Spec, and Andromeda Spaceways. Sloane is an aspiring medical school student. But she also has a strong rebellious streak, which puts her more in line with her Uncle Vin than her father, the galactic dignitary. But after a botched heist, she is now out and working as a bounty hunter. But her real goal is finding her uncle (maybe to wring his neck). Sloane is a rebel, an outcast, and a brilliant woman, often underestimated. Her crew are misfits, and she has very unlikely allies. Great world (galaxy) building, with a cast of foes and allies (in a galaxy where it is hard to tell which is which). Kate’s writing is vivid but also straightforward and to the point I enjoy everything she writes.
While it took me a bit to feel at home in this new-to-me world, I had so much fun with the quirky cast of characters, and it was a wild ride of an adventure that kept me up way past my bedtime!
I loved following "exasparatingly capable" shero Sloane and her more-bickering-family-than-professional-crew along on her ongoing quest to find her Uncle Vin. And I'm also getting more and more invested in Gareth's search for his missing ships - not to mention that delicious slooooooow burn relationship developing between the two quite reluctant MCs.
I've struggled to find a series of books that pulled me in for a long time. This did just that. The story may jump about a bit, with various holes in the story (these may get filled in later, I hope), but I soon warmed to the characters and wanted to see where they went and what happens to them. There are a few typos (or at least things missed by a proof reader), but don't let that put you off a thoroughly enjoyable space romp. Can't wait to see what happens next.
An excellent read. I loved the criminal/spy set up of Sloan's uncle Vin. How she took over after he went missing. All the adventures of a bounty hunter space mission and the interactions with the fleet commander, Gareth Fortune. The twist at the finish had been building in the background for a while but was very well written to make me want more.
There are so many good things to say about this series. The story is sci-fi standard. The characters are written well. The secret civilization is interesting but… There is no complete story in any of the books. There is no possibility of satisfaction from a standalone read and that is a shame. So much potential wasted.
This series is gripping , entertaining and even some genuinely funny moments. Great characterization and storyline, thoroughly enjoyable. A Dan good space opera of epic proportions.
Sloane Tarnish takes her bounty to the Federation and meets it viperous head. She continues her search for the data chip and uncle. She gains a security chief. She continues being saved by and saving fortune.
