The Balkans, 1371

After conquering the Serbian army in battle, bands of Ottoman warriors terrorize the land, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake. As one of the few survivors of a deadly attack on her village, Magdalena is determined to protect her newly orphaned niece. When a group of battle-weary Serb warriors offers to lead Magdalena and her charge to safety, a flame of hope flickers to life for the desperate woman, burning brighter when she spots a familiar face among the Miladin, the man she once loved—and lost.

Following a devastating defeat on the battlefield, Miladin resolves to return home to Rivak and pledge his loyalty to the new župan, Konstantin, the young son of the slain leader who led Miladin to war. As Miladin travels back from the Maritsa River Valley to offer aid and allegiance to the inexperienced youth, he expects the way will be fraught with danger, but he never dreams that the journey will reunite him with his first love.

Even as Magdalena and Miladin rekindle a romance once doomed by youth and circumstance, hidden threats draw ever closer. Before they can truly be safe, they must face a ruthless enemy who will stop at nothing to seize power.

I love books, so that makes Goodreads my favorite social media site. As a reader, I enjoy a variety of books. As a writer, I create historical novels with a wholesome mix of action, adventure, and romance. My stories have earned Whitney Awards, Foreword Indies Finalists positions, Readers’ Favorite Gold and Silver medals, a Historical Novel Society Editor’s Choice Selection, and a Praiseworthy Award.

I'm a wife and a mother of three, and I've called Washington State, Utah, and Alaska home. I'm usually reading a couple books at once and working on multiple writing projects too. Other than that, my life is pretty ordinary. I'm grateful for that. I'll let the characters in my books have all the adventures.

About My Goodreads Ratings:
I joined Goodreads as a reader first, but since I’m an author too, I’ve made some changes to how I rate books. For fiction, I'll give a book 5 stars if I enjoyed every page. Otherwise, I'll leave the rating blank. For nonfiction, 5 star books are ones I enjoyed enough that I’d like to read them again. They’re books I connected with and highly recommend to others. 4 star books are good books that I thought were worth reading once, and they’re also recommended.

This author never fails to blow me away with her detailed and engrossing historical books. This prequel to The Balkan Legends series caught my attention and interest immediately and I was sad to see it end. I know an epic series is looming and I can’t wait to dive into more of this story set in the 1370s.

Miladen and Magdalena are such fantastic characters. Amidst tragedy and suffering, hope and second chances blossom, and their journey is inspiring. The dual points of view gave so much more depth to the book and allowed for the reader to connect with them.

Content/TW⚠️intense fighting/death due to war/violence but not overly gory or graphic; talk of miscarriages; light romance (kissing); Christian themes and elements

This book has all the intensity and depth you’d expect from a full-length novel, though it’s significantly shorter. I love how A.L. Sowards’ books can give me the feel of a full battle scene, without making it dark or gory. I don’t finish her books feeling depressed, and I always finish feeling enlightened about a part of history I didn’t know as well before. A.L. Sowards doesn’t miss a single important thing in this one. If you enjoy wartime fiction at all, this is a must-read. This book is full of battle scenes, heartache, character depth and development, intrigue, spies, deception, hand-to-hand combat, and romance.

Miladin is everything you’d want in a hero. He’s thoughtful and kind, and loyal and determined. Magdalena, while a woman, has the heart of a warrior. What she went through with her husband made me seethe! But she did it all with grace and calm, and I was inspired by her ability to move forward despite tragedy and heart break. And I adored Svetlana. When I tell you think book made me feel allll the feels, I mean it. I was on the edge of my seat, I chuckled, I feared, I cried. I felt it all.

This prequel novella is the absolute perfect step into the waters of this series. You more than whet your appetite—you’ll be hooked, and desperate for more from this world. Thankfully, A.L. Sowards will be giving it to us with book one of this series coming June. Right now is the perfect time to start on the series!

**Many thanks to the publisher and author for the copy. All thoughts are my own.

Wow! What a great novella! So well done! This novella takes place in The Balkans in 1371. There are Turks attacking villages and one of the villages they attack is Magdalena’s village. Magdalena is or rather was, the 2nd wife to Glebu who treats her horribly. Magdalena and her niece ,4 year old, Svetlana escape death from the attack. When a long lost love, Miladin, arrives to help. They travel together back to Miladin’s home where more trouble is brewing.

Really loved this novella. Loved all the main characters! There is a lot of fighting in the story so be aware of that. But the characters are so brave and heroic. There is some romance thrown in as well. Overall great story and I definitely recommend!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Content: battles/fighting/killings(mild-moderately detailed), talk of miscarriages

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

Such a phenomenal read! I love the attention to historical details. I learned new things without it feeling forced and the battle scenes were well written and realistic without being gory. Loved the story line as well and the characters, I might add, were well developed despite the shorter length of the book. I didn’t want to put it down. Can’t wait to read the next books in the series! So, so good.

An Exciting Begin to a New Series!

This novella really packed a punch. Intrigue, danger, love and excitement. The time period interests me as does the setting. I love the way this author writes. I can't wait to see where this new series takes me!

After the Crescent Strike, written by one of my favorite historical fiction authors, A.L. Sowards, skillfully weaves a compelling tale. Even with it being a novella, it reads like a full-length novel, immersing readers in the conflict between the Turks and Serbians during a crucial time in history. The plot explores the themes of land acquisition, leadership struggles, and the rise of the Ottoman Empire. While portraying diverse aspects of war, the story offers a delicate balance without becoming overly graphic.

The reunion of Magdalena and Miladen's love after a decade apart is an emotional highlight, boosted by many amazing characters.

The conclusion makes me look forward to discovering who will be featured in the next installment of the Balkan Legend series. This story is filled with characters manifesting bravery, loyalty, and selflessness. The novella draws inspiration from true events that unfolded in 1371. The addition of Christian themes adds depth to the overall story.

After the Crescent Strike proves to be a gripping read that lingers in the mind long after the final page is turned. I highly recommend jumping into this engaging novella, which has produced an excellent introduction to what promises to be an enthralling new series.

I'm always amazed how immersed I get into A.L. Sowards' historical fiction. They never fail to transport me to another place and time in history. This prequel is the perfect introduction to the new series. I love second-chance romances so I loved seeing Magdalena and Miladin rekindle their friendship and romance after so many years apart.

This novella felt more like a novel while I was reading it and I was surprised and saddened when it came to an end. But I know there are upcoming books that will continue the story and I can't wait to read them. Magdalena and Miladin are wonderful characters who keep moving forward with their lives making despite what's going on around them. I highly recommend this to historical fiction/romance fans! I appreciate the author including a map, a glossary of terms and historical background that I could refer to while reading.

Note: intense fighting/death due to war/violence but not overly gory or graphic; talk of miscarriages; light romance (just kissing); Christian themes and elements.

My goodness, this action-packed novella was absolutely incredible. I cannot believe all that happened in a book so short, but it was so good. I should also mention it should be illegal for Amanda to write novellas, because I just want more and more and MORE! And as much as I loved this story, I do wish it had more. But I’m okay with it, because it was the prequel novella to a whole new series that I just know is going to be amazing.
Lenka and Miladin’s story was heartbreaking and yet so wholesome and full of optimism. In a world that is unstable and the future unsure, these two have a second chance at love. They have both experienced unimaginable atrocities and yet they keep moving forward, they don’t give up despite the weight they carry.
Basically this novella was perfection and the start to an intense series.

“But now that our paths have crossed again, maybe we can move forward together as we are now. We’ve both taken detours, but now we have another chance, and maybe we could be exactly what we both need.”

The Balkins, 1371

After conquering the Serbian army in battle, bands of Ottoman warriors completely terrorize the land, leaving a great trail of much death and utter destruction in their wake. As one of the few survivors of a deadly attack on her village, dear Magdalena is determined to protect her newly orphaned niece. When a group of battle-weary Serb warriors offers to lead Magdalena and her charge to safety, a flame of hope flickers to life for the desperate woman, burning brighter when she spots a familiar face among the group: Miladin, the man she once loved—and lost.

Following a rather devastating defeat on the battlefield, committed Miladin resolves to return home to Rivak and pledge his loyalty to the new župan, Konstantin, the young son of the slain leader who led Miladin to war.

But, before they can truly be safe, they must face a ruthless enemy who will stop at nothing to seize power…

“Forgiveness isn’t easy, but sometimes, it’s the only way forward.”

@a.l.sowards, what a epic packed story! Filled with such adventure, suspense, history, and a tender second chance romance, set in the midst of great tragedy. This story is about finding joy, faith, and forgiveness in the aftermath of much pain. It was inspiring to see dear characters find peace. This is a story worth the read!!

Wow! This may just be a novella, but there is so much packed into the pages, and I LOVED it. @a.l.sowards is one of those authors that has such a gift to weave beautiful words, and make them ones you don’t forget. I dreamt about Magdalena and Miladin, and I pondered on their trials that brought them closer together. I am a forever fan of all of her books.

I tend to avoid books that aren’t mostly about romance, but hers are an exception. She draws me in every time, and I love her books. This one starts with a devastating battle, and it only continues from there with the heartache and cruelty of war. I cannot wait to get more of the story in the next books!! Magdalena lived through so much hardship and heartbreak, and I wish I could say you don’t see more of it in this story, but you do, and it just shows you how strong she was, and all women of that time. I loved that Miladin opened his arms and gave her all the love and acceptance she had been so desperately needing. It really is just a BEAUTIFUL story, one that I will be thinking about for a while (per the usual for her books 😉).

Wow! I don’t even know what to say. A. L. Sowards writes so well, I feel like I am right there in the incredible story. What an action packed story full of danger, betrayal, faith, and second chance romance.

Miladin is a brave warrior but he’s also compassionate and loyal. His strength of character was evident in his actions to his fellow warriors and determination to return to his Zupan. His strength of love and faith evident in his interactions with Magdalena and Sveta.

“Our zupan may have your time and your loyalty, but I know we have each other’s hearts. That will be enough for me. I trust you to keep mine from harm. And I think I finally trust myself to be keeper of your heart.”

I didn’t realize this was a prequel to “Beneath a Crescent Shadow” which I read first but it only brought more detail and clarity to things from book one. Now, I love Miladin, Magdalena, and Konstantin even more!

A. L. Sowards is a great author and she’s really done a spectacular job this time. This prequel to a series does exactly what a prequel is supposed to do—make you anticipate the release of book 1! I cannot wait!!

This is a historical medieval novella, set during the war between the Turks and the Serbs. I love the writing style. From page one, I was captivated by the characters and plot. There are moments that are sweet and others that are heartbreaking. It covers the gamut of human experience: love, fear, faith, despair, grief, courage, cowardice, community, loyalty, betrayal, shame, and more.

The characters are well-written and realistic. I can see them so clearly when I read. The plot was complex but believable, the pacing just right. The historical setting was clear and, I believe accurate.

There is a lot of violence—some domestic abuse, but mainly the atrocities of war and conflict. Sometimes it’s descriptive. While I don’t like a lot of violence in books, some stories just can’t be told without an understanding of the brutality of the situation. This is one of those stories.

I give this book 5 stars and recommend it to older readers (18+?) who enjoy historical accuracy and a story that grips your heart and won’t let go.

I had no idea what to expect with medieval Serbia as the backdrop, but this novella sets the scene beautifully!

A.L. Sowards holds true to her ability to bring history alive, depicting the lives of the lesser-known, and highlight the hope is any story.

With this being the prequel, I cannot wait for the first book and the new MC’s story! (It is not the same MC as the prequel) I ended the book absolutely rooting for this character and I want to see how they grow/where the story takes them!

Read this book if you like:
🛡️ Medieval Times
🛡️ Learning New Words
🛡️ Turks vs Serbians
🛡️ Putting Others Before Yourself
🛡️ Welcoming Friends Like Family
🛡️ Strategy
🛡️ Protecting the Zupan (Lord)
🛡️ Detecting Danger
🛡️ Dual POV

Content: This is set during a time when the Ottoman armies are building an empire, so there is wartime violence described without being graphic. If this is something you are worried about, feel free to message me and I can give you more information!

Wow! If you love a good historical fiction book, you HAVE to read this one. It is the prequel novella for a new series by A.L. Sowards. I can't pick up a book by this author without being hooked instantly and not wanting to stop reading it. This is another book that while I was reading it, I was messaging my bookish friends and telling them to drop everything and read it right away!!! I was completely immersed. As soon as I finished it, I picked up my arc of book 1 (releasing in June) and devoured it as well! Mark your calendars because you need these books in your life!

These books are set in the Balkans, this one in 1371 and the first book a few years later. The characters are Serbian and in this book have just been conquered by the Ottomans. Magdalena finds her village destroyed and she and her niece are the sole survivors. Providence shines on them and puts some Serbian warriors in her path to help protect her. One of which is Mildan, who was the man she loved years ago but was forced to be separated from.

I loved the story of reconnecting and rebuilding. The sorrow and healing were well balanced. Add in a tender love story and a young new župan, Konstantin-who's father was killed by the Ottoman's- and there is a lot of intrigue and suspense that will keep you turning the pages needing to know if all will be well and if Magdalena and Mildan can find their way past old and current wounds.

Content: Clean. The book does deal with war so there are fight scenes, death, battles, and some talk of wounds and blood. But the author did a great job of not making it overly graphic. I would let my teenagers read it. There are also some kisses as there is a sweet romance but nothing further.

My own personal copy. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

READY FOR THE SERIES.

This has me all sorts of excited for the full series coming. I love this setting and the historical and faith aspects too. Even with a short (116ish pages) story I felt like these characters were incredibly well crafted. I could feel the emotional depth of what they were going through. I loved the faith aspects too. Those hit me on a soul deep level and I connected to the main leads so much.

It’s a nice intro to the where the larger story and different characters are going. I look forward to seeing the expansion of the world and learning even more about this time period. I love Sowards gorgeous writing and how well this book has been researched.

Overall audience notes:
- Historical + Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: moderate
- Trigger/Content Warnings: battle themes, major loss of life, mentions of miscarriages, near death experiences

I feel like this is a small taste of a period of time and place I’m not familiar with. I was completely sucked into the lives and hearts of the people, fascinated by the different customs, and left wanting more. Lucky for me this is just the beginning of a new series by one of my favorite historical fiction authors.

This book takes place right before the beginning of a major battle. As the lives of the people are completely changed by the effects of war I was drawn to them as the author let us into their hearts. Their goodness and strength made me love and care for them. I can’t wait for more!

*** There is some heavy content, as the book involved war. If these types of things are a trigger for you, please feel free to ask my questions to determine if it’s the right book for you.

The book began well and I thought I was in for a good read. However about a third of the way in, it just ….fizzled. It was slow and boring. I had a hard time even finishing. Too bad the author didn’t do some research to give the story more historical depth.

This is set in the late 1300’s with the conflict between the Turks and the Serbians. The names are way different and the roles and places were less familiar so I had to really pay attention to understand all that was going on but Magdalena and Miladin were great characters and the story was interesting from a historical perspective and I really enjoyed the read. This is a prequel to Beneath a Crescent Shadow so read this one first.

One thing I love about A.L. Sowards’ books, is that the majority of the ones I have read take place during time periods and events that I am not very familiar with. I’ll even admit that sometimes I have been a little hesitant because I am unfamiliar with that time period, but then I start reading and am quickly engrossed in the story, and I’m always glad to have read it. This novella is so good! It is a war story with a little bit of romance. It is suspenseful and got me excited to read the rest of the series when those books are available. And I hope we get to have glimpses of Miladin, Magdalena, and Svetka later in the series.

I have loved every book by Sowards and this book was no exception. She is so good at telling accurate history while at the same time making you fall in love with all the characters. The battle scenes are so intense and never too long or boring. The author never shies away from the hard parts of the history. (Let’s just say I felt all the emotions while reading) But I always come away feeling happy and hopeful after reading the story. I like that she shows not only the life of the man and warrior during these hard times, but the life of the women. It makes me grateful for the time I live in. This is a unique time period that I know very little about. I am grateful to learn more about it in a very entertaining way. I can’t believe this story was only a novella bc it felt like a full novel to me! The romance was so sweet and the Christian themes really impacted me. Just one example is using Christs atonement and forgiveness to find peace in your heart. I can’t wait to continue this series.

SPOILERS and book notes:
This book has a map, glossary, character list, and an EPIC cover
1371 Ottoman Empire is a Turkish empire in Asia. The ottomans were Muslim. The are expanding into Europe. The MC are part of the Serbian Empire and included much of the Balkan Peninsula. Their religion is Christian orthodox. All this sword fighting is so brutal and close and personal. It reminds me of the nephite and lamanite battles. Miladin was asleep when the Turks attacked so he didn’t have time to put on his armor! And he kept thinking how he wished he had his armor. “He longed for a shield, a helmet—anything to help in a battle against an overwhelming enemy.” It reminds me of the importance and advantage of the armor of god against the power of Satan. It’s hard to quickly put it on when a Satan power attacks you. That is why you constantly need to be wearing it (consistently reading BOM etc). I am crying for Magdalena. Her 30 year age gap with her horrible husband! She was married at 16 and has been with him for 10 years! He just puts her down and mentally abuses her. But there are no options for women back then. And she keeps having miscarriages and no babies and it’s taking a toll on her body. It’s so sad. I like that the two MC communicate so well. She didn’t hide her unhappiness of her life and no children from him. “Miladin’s promise that he could make Magdalena happy because he loved her had been laughed at. Love won’t feed her or clothe her or keep a roof over her head. It seemed the opposite was also true: food, clothing, and shelter didn’t guarantee anything beyond survival.” Miladin explained death perfectly yo the little 4yo niece Svetlana. He bore his testimony. That he knows they are with God and are happy. He explained the plan of salvation. “And yesterday, war came, and now the others have gone to live with God, including your mama and papa.” “But why?” Her small lips quivered. “I think God missed them and wanted them back with Him.” Svetlana looked toward the road. No bodies were visible. Was the girl old enough to understand the devastation that had struck her home? “If God missed them and wanted them back with Him, why didn’t He want me too?” Miladin gave the girl a sad smile. “He misses you, too, Svetlana. For now, He wants you and me to stay here a little while longer. I think He wants to see what we’ll do. If we’ll be brave when it’s time to stand for what is good, if we’ll help when we see others in need, if we’ll keep our faith even when it feels as if absolutely everything has gone wrong.” I hate how horrible that day was when Miladin asked her dad for her hand in marriage and he said no was. Aw a battle! And Magdalena totally saved him by shooting a crossbow at one of his opponents. Then she stitched up his face cut as he laid his head in her lap. And how good he is in making her feel loved and worthy! ““I don’t understand. How could he not be mesmerized by your beauty? Or awed by how deep your compassion runs? How could he care so little about your happiness when your happiness is like a sunrise lighting the whole world? Why would he choose to live in the gloom when he could have had the warmth of your light?” “he only saw my weaknesses. He never saw me the way you saw me.” “Not the way I saw you, Lenka. The way I still see you.”” I like that she makes this mental choice: “Glebu and Miladin saw completely different things in her, but she would trust Miladin’s vision and cling to his friendship.” I love konstantine (the new leader). He is young and doesn’t want power but is stepping up. He defends his now orphaned little cousins who are half Turkish. This next quote reminds me of the quote from serious black when he says “you can tell more about a man how he treats his servents than his equals” it’s this one from konstentine: “Cedozar glanced at the boy. “Where I come from, we don’t let little urchins bother men of rank or their horses.” ““In my lands, warriors are meant to protect the innocent, not use their power to prey on the young or the weak. Do not ever touch my cousin again.” This is an interesting sentence by Bica Miladins mom: “A heart always has room for more love, unless that heart is already full of hurt and bitterness. They can root themselves in deep, and they make it hard for love to thrive.” ““I had to expel the pain. Had to release my anger at God and my fury toward the man who brought the plague to our village. Forgiveness isn’t easy, but sometimes, it’s the only way forward.” “I promise the journey from sorrow to hope is worth the EFFORT.” Look how beautiful this sentence is!! ““And I want someone I can love with my whole heart—someone I have loved with my whole heart, since before I even knew what love was. Someone to share all of life’s joys with. The pains, too, but, Lenka, I promise there will be more joy than pain if we can be together.” OOOo we had a who did this to you moment. And then their first kiss!!!! “His face was very near hers. She closed her eyes and sighed as his breath brushed her cheek, trembled as his lips whispered against hers, ached as his mouth explored hers. How she had longed for this—for a oneness built on love and friendship instead of on obligation and custom. And how she had longed for him: the friend from her youth, her first love, the hero who had rescued her after the Turks had destroyed everything, the man who had given her a new start at life and a new start at hope.” This next sentence both ripped my heart and healed it at the same time: ““I waited half a lifetime for that kiss,” he said. “I can wait another year for everything else if you’ll promise to be mine eventually.” “I promise.” Then he kissed her again.” But it was also really good bc it gave her a chance to physically heal from her miscarriages and to heal her soul with Jesus. Aww they gave each other their hearts but it is killing them to wait a whole year haha. Authors note!!!: “The Ottoman Empire would grow in strength until another historical turning point, the 1681 Siege of Vienna, and then ultimately dissolve in the aftermath of WWI. (For more information on the 1681 Siege of Vienna, I recommend my novel Before the Fortress Falls.)” I looooved that book too though it made me bawl.

I am so excited for this series by A.L. Sowards! This prequel novella is the perfect way to get acquainted with the characters and setting of this series. The medieval times were SO brutal - between wars and diseases, life was HARD. I thought the elements of faith were perfectly incorporated into the story. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Many times, prequel novellas are actually written and released after a series has started, and as such, they sometimes feel too short and as if the characters are not completely developed. This is not the case with this novella. Author Sowards has put her usual high level of research and care into her writing and allows the reader a full and exciting entry into her new Balkan Legends series.

This is not a time period or geographical location that I, as a reader, have much prior knowledge of, but an excellent glossary at the beginning helped greatly with words and terms unfamiliar to me. The novella itself offered everything I could want in a novella. From the outset with a surprise attack on the army to which the main hero Miladin belonged and signs that nefarious deeds might be behind the death and destruction, I was hooked! Miladin's back story was briefly introduced, including his love for a young woman of his native village and her father's refusal to accept his request for her hand in marriage.

After the battle, Miladin and two other surviving soldiers set out to return home to protect their new Zupan (Lord). Along the way, they discover that soldiers have wiped out the village of Miladin's youth. There are only two survivors, the wife of the local blacksmith and her 4 year old niece, who had been out collecting mushrooms in the forest when the attack occurred. Magdalena and her niece Sveta hide in the forest until it is safe for Magdalena to come out and assess what has happened. Her life with husband Glebu has been a hard one filled with emotional abuse and multiple miscarriages. It surprised me that these were considered a sin at the time with penance attached. In spite of this, she regrets how he met his end, but even more, she is devastated by the loss of her brother and his wife, Sveta's parents. When she is discovered by Miladin and friends, he is stunned to find she is the woman he had loved and lost.

The rest of the novella details the difficulties they face in their journey to the safety of Miladin's home as well as the effects of the battle loss on the surrounding lands of their new Lord Konstantin who is only seventeen and who in no way had been expecting to take on such a large leadership role in his youth. You will have to read the novella to learn of the difficulties and treachery they face and to learn how the relationship between Miladin and Magdalena progresses.

There is a strong sense of faith throughout, and a message of hope and the ability to forgive the harms of the past.

Soward has beautifully set up an entry into Konstantin's story as he takes on the role of a leader in turbulent times. Included with the novella is the first chapter of the next book in the Balkan Legend's series. I look forward to reading it and getting to know these characters. If you like historical fiction, this novella will not disappoint you. I hope it will touch you as much as it has me.

A.L. Sowards is one of the best historical novelists I’ve read. Her work is scrupulously researched, and she doesn’t shy away from tough topics. I love that she takes on some lesser-known eras and events.

The Balkan Legends series is one example of that, focusing on the late 14th century conflicts between Serbians and the invading Ottoman empire, a piece of history that very few of us know much about. The Muslim Ottomans spread over the are we know as “the Balkans”, pillaging and forcing local leaders into a form of servitude. Once subjugated, local leaders were left to do more or less as they pleased, but they had to pay tribute, in money and goods, and provide men to fight on behalf of their Ottoman rulers as they continued their quest to dominate that part of the world.
That is the society Sowards brings us into, mixing true history with her own storyline to teach us about life in that time and place. She combines war, faith, and romance and presents us with well-rounded characters whom we learn to love over the course of the series.

This prequel novella sets up the series by explaining how Rivak comes under Ottoman rule and how Konstantin becomes zupan. Miladin is a classic example of the dutiful, loyal soldier who becomes a mentor to his young leader. Watching him be reunited with his childhood love is satisfying, particularly as he helps her to overcome the trauma of her marriage and the Ottoman attack on her village.

Possible Objectionable Material:
The violence of war and the killing of innocent people (and way too many horses). Sexual assault and attempted sexual assault (not described). Family disfunction, including abuse. Pregnancy loss. Non-graphic descriptions of battle wounds. Betrayal and obsession.

Who Might Like These Books:
Those who enjoy history, particularly of lesser-known times and places. And, of course, those who enjoy a little romance with their history.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing ARCs in exchange for my honest opinion.

I’m always amazed at the way A.L. Sowards can bring history to life in such a brilliant way that I feel I’m right there, and gain a new appreciation for those who came before. After the Crescent Strike takes place in the Balkans in 1371 when the Serbs were under threat from the Turks in their expanse of the Ottoman Empire. From the beginning, this story took me on an intense ride as battles wage with fierce fighting and destruction. There’s also a beautiful, second chance romance as well as themes of forgiveness and moving forward.

Miladin is a soldier who barely escapes a surprise attack by the Turks. As he and his comrades journey to Rivak, they come across a burned village most of whose inhabitants have been murdered. One of the few survivors is Magdalena and her little niece Svetlana. Miladin wanted to marry Magdalena several years ago, but Magdalena’s father felt they were too young and married her off to a much older blacksmith.

As their little band journeys to Rivak, they face perilous dangers along the way. Once they reach their destination, intrigue and betrayals threaten. Can they rekindle their love against nearly insurmountable odds?

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Not only was there a lot of action and adventure, but I enjoyed the sweet second chance romance between Miladin and Magdalena. Magdalena suffered under the thumb of her first husband and struggles with the idea of marrying again. I felt for her plight and desperately wanted her to find happiness and peace. These characters were so well written and easy to connect with.

This is the perfect introduction to the Balkan Legends series and has made me so excited to read the entire series. Though it’s a novella, it reads like a full novel with exquisite detail. I also appreciated the glossary at the beginning of the book that I could easily refer back to.

Highly recommend this to historical fiction/romance fans! Sensitive readers should know that there are depictions of battles though no gory details, mentions of miscarriages, and spousal abuse. There are also Christian themes and elements mentioned throughout the story. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author but also purchased the ebook version. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

Whoa. What a stunning start a series!!

Balkins, 1371

Miladin miraculously survives a battle with the Ottoman army and makes his way back to home to offer his support and allegiance to Konstantin, the new young leader.

Magadalena is one of only a few survivors of an attacker on her village by a roving band of Ottoman soldiers, and is relieved when a small band of Turkish soldiers offers to escort her to safety.

She is also surprised to find the man she had once loved among those now protecting her.

As Miladin and Magdalena become reacquainted, they find that old sparks still burn bright, but a hidden danger may keep them from ever rekindling the love they once shared.

What I loved:

rich history
unique and vivid setting
dual POV
second chance romance
loyalty and bravery
suspenseful battle scenes
theme of forgiveness

This author's works of historical fiction are so full of vivid, rich history that comes alive when you open the pages. I was completely immersed in a time and place so far removed from my reality and I felt like I was there watching this tender love story taking place in the middle of danger and defeat.

Miladin and Magdalena's choices of loyalty, forgiveness, and courage brought hope and light to a tragic story and though this is a novella, the story was wrapped up perfectly at the end while also setting up the rest of the series.

Superbly done and I am eager for the rest of the series. A must-read for fans of historical fiction!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

I had a hard time figuring out how to portray just how epic this novella was in my graphic. So, this one is quite simple. But trust me, this novella will transport you to the Balkans in the year 1371.
I love the way A.L. Sowards rights her historical books. She does such a great job helping you to feel like you are in the time and place she wants you to. I loved the way I felt like I was right there in the battle with Miladin. I loved the way he fights for what he believes is right, even though it's not easy.
I also loved Magdalena. Her whole world is changed in one day when the Turks attack her town. Leaving only her and her niece Svetlana alive. I loved the forgiveness thread of Magdalena's story. Magdalena had been deeply hurt by her father and her husband. Both of whom were dead. But she had to work to rid herself of the anger she felt for the way her life had turned out. I loved that she was willing to ask the priest for help. And try to move past it.
This book contains such an epic journey for all of the characters. There is war, murder, intrigue, romance and more. It's such a well done novella. You won't want to miss it!
I was sent an e-copy of After The Crescent Strike from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This heartfelt historical fiction novella kicks off a new series set in The Balkans in the 1300s. It is not a time period or place I have read a lot about and I am always excited to find historical fiction that covers lesser told stories.

As a prequel to the series it sets the stage really well for the full length novels to follow and got me excited to discover what some of the characters stories will be. But it is also a satisfying story on its own with a shorter but still meaningful arc.

With a well researched historical setting, Christian themes, and a tender second chance romance it is a story set in the midst of tragedy. It is about finding joy, faith, and forgiveness in the aftermath of pain.

This book publishes tomorrow! It is only available as an e-book and is currently on sale for only .99 but that price will be going up very soon!

Trigger/content warnings: battle related violence and death (you hear many details of the fight but it’s not gory in descriptions); grief; recounting past miscarriages. Steam level is mild kissing.
