Chelby Duncan never knew who her parents were, or why they gave her up.
Knowing when people belong together is what she's best at doing, but her success at fixing people up isn’t exactly career-worthy. Chelby’s foster father is a retired general who is running for Senate, so joining the army is the natural direction for her to take when she turns eighteen.
At the Military Entrance Processing Station, she is given a blood test and discovers that she’s not human.
She’s Fae, and she has a second blood type that they can’t identify.
Warned to run before she is taken by Sector Nine, Chelby flees the MEPS.
Her panic leads her to an encounter with Dr. Gould, who gives her his card and tells her that the Paranormal Mercenary Corps can help her.
Chelby finds it hard to believe any of this is happening until she returns home and armed men from the mysterious Sector Nine show up to take her away.
On the run for her life, Chelby calls Dr. Gould as a last resort.
The Director of the Paranormal Military Corps takes her to their headquarters in the Colorado Mountains, where she meets other supernaturals and learns about the Fae powers that were suppressed when she was young.
Emergent powers she can’t control, a whole new world to fit into, and a mentor who’s determined to help her discover her true potential.
Between training and forging bonds with her new teammates, Chelby has her work cut out for her. It’s enough to put the threat she escaped to the back of her mind…for now.
But Sector Nine aren’t done with Chelby, and a betrayal awaits her when a training exercise goes awry.
Will Chelby overcome the heartbreak that awaits her at the secret facility? Can she master her new powers and break free of Sector Nine’s grasp before it’s too late?

This story had a lot of promise. The first book isn't terrible. The story line was interesting and the characters had potential. But the execution of the story itself seems to get worse from one book to the next.
There were a lot of contradictions and random moments that felt like they were just thrown in. Also, the whole damsel in distress heroine is a bit annoying to be honest. How many times are you going to emphasize that she is (SPOILER ALERT) "the most powerful and rare dragon ever" and then have her helpless to fight off mutated humans? Does she ever actually WIN a fight?
Also, why do the supporting characters seem to disappear for multiple chapters only to reappear to make random comments, loan their shirt as a tourniquet only to lend the same shirt the next morning when she finds herself naked (again) or suddenly have a thing for the guy who was just torturing her teammates in his dungeon last week?
Additionally, "Call Sign Cupid?" That name hasn't been mentioned since the first book and no other team member ever had a call sign. Also, she's not a Cupid. Nor is she Cupid like.
This author has a lot of creativity and is full of great ideas. But there is still a lot of development to be worked out.
First the Cupid titles have no actual plot relation. Second a foster care tomboy female lead is entirely too fond of Latin. Third the villains keep committing the same crimes in the same way and yet the good guys keep getting ambushed . Fourth whenever the action or plotline slows down just throw in another mystrrious arcane artifact or scroll one cross two cross necklace coin key spell scroll and so forth. Needless secrecy Untrained teens trying to act like black ops special forces. Many other character constantly flaws. The food and location desvriptions were excellent. I also am very fond of Edinburgh Scotland, Durango Colorado and Mesa Verde National Park and also the Silverton Durango narrow gauge !oc omotive that is only mentioned in passing. I do tend to support Anderle anti romantiv triangle view rather than Guida's pro romantic triangle I only like them when they stay a triangle like Tanya Huff or that GoT guy in The Dying of the Light. I am not sorry I read it, but read all of Sherilyn Kenyon first for better.
I usually love all the books that LMBPN puts out, but this series was just ok. The potential for greatness was definitely there, but it just fell short. Too many inconsistencies from one book to another. Too many time jumps with no mention that any time had passed. It also felt like the author was more interested in describing the scenery than she was in writing about the characters. Six books of build up, and the “final battle” took place in a handful of pages. Again, the parts are there. Good premise, good characters. But too much kept happening at the same time without any real reason. Deus ex machina time and again. I really wanted to live this series, but, like the title of my review says, meh.
Was looking for a new read in a new universe and I prefer completed series, so I grabbed this. Fought to get half way thru, finally gave up. I think that this is written for 1st graders. Poor plot, highly unbelievable plot twists in and out of situations, unfathomable consequences. And someone entirely about plot continuity, in one chapter a character is a deadly enemy and in the next chapter the same character is a trusted confidant. In one book a key magical device is owned by the princess. In the next book that same device is held by an evil overlord with no intervening events. That was the last straw for me.
Not gonna lie, I stopped reading after book three. I couldn’t finish all six. There was good bare bones for the setup of the series—I mean I absolutely love an academy novel mixed with the paranormal—but I had a hard time following allowing with the plot and sometimes it felt like there was continuity issues happening in, say, the third book that were different from what had been spelled out in the first and second. I just had a hard time connecting.
I liked the idea behind it though. And the setup for a found family (though I wished that had been built into more as well).
the girl who thought she was alone finds theParanormal Mercenary Corps and discovers a readymade family
Chelby has always felt alone. She was raised in various orphanages both abroad and at home. Then she is fostered by people who don’t see her as family. Once she is on her own she falls in with a group of Paranormal Mercenaries because as she turns eighteen her powers start showing up. As she is learning to utilize those powers she finds her self bonding to her group and they learn they are better together than separate, and she now has a grandfather and an uncle.
Usually she writes stories about powerful women. However the main character Chelby was constantly getting beaten. She was constantly getting injured and almost dying and she wasn't able to protect her team from constantly getting kidnapped and tortured. It was such a long and drawn out series that it quickly became boring And difficult to read.
Very disappointed because I know she can do better.
This was an ok book and story line. Like many of the books in this genre/shared world, it was quick to ready with a long and arduous story line that ends quickly and decisively. Entertaining and worth the price as a Kindle Unlimited option. I wish these had more depth but appreciate authors using Kindle Unlimited.
So glad I got the box set of this series. Such a journey from human to hero for our leading lady and the friends and family that she discovers. Mystery and betrayal are around every corner. Wonderful characters that you cannot help but love...and hate! A set that I will come back to...
Perfect if you're wanting something untaxing to relax with at the end of the day. There weren't any dead spots where you're just reading it waiting for the boring bit to be over and it had enough positivity to avoid being depressing in the more dramatic parts.
I love this genre, and have read hundreds of books, over 500 in the last couple years. The story started out great, but I was hoping for more character development and deeper understanding of the plot. I’m not a writer and may not be using the correct terminology, but I was left lacking.
I really enjoyed this series of books. It had good character development and I liked the way the characters interacted with each other and resolved their differences. There were quite a few surprises along the way in the series which added to the enjoyment of reading. I am planning to read other books about the PMC.
I loved every bit of this series, I've cried so many times throughout this story. Well done to the both of you for creating this boxed set. Extremely good value xx
This series has been one of the best story lines I have read. It was captivating throughout and keep me reading. I will definitely be looking for more of their books.
Great story line and characters. Emotional, funny, heart warming. My only confusion was how Chelby's foster mother and sister recognized her after the glamour was taken off. Sad abt her father, but happy abt the ending.
Great story. Intense. Loved the twists and turns. I laughed and cried. I am a huge fan of Michael Anderle, now adding M Gueida. Awesome epic believable. Though the end needs an epilogue or more stories!
An interesting read that wraps up the story. Although there were some inconsistencies (like the spelling of Mortuorum being Moruorum and a few facts that didn’t add up), the story was entertaining and fun to read.
This series was amazing. The characters and storyline were well written. The non stop action from start to finish will keep you wanting more and more. If I could I would rate it higher.
Gripping plot twists, love, heros, fantasy a story to grip your hearts and imaginations. A story of heart and soul and fire characters who ignite a bond a friendship/family
