This book is the literary equivalent of the movie Showgirls. I was seduced by the packaging, horrified by the contents, but too transfixed to look away. Victoria Price is an unbelievable beauty working undercover as a prostitute, in an effort to catch a serial killer preying on Chicago’s working girls. Jack Storm is the billionaire; she unintentionally draws into her orbit in the course of business. This concept though a little implausible snagged my attention. It could have been a really cute IR version of Pretty Woman, with a twist. Unfortunately, there were too many problems with the execution of the idea.
The Good: The cover of this book is really nice. Unlike others, I still love the billionaire romance trope. It’s also nice for the heroine in one, to have an interesting job. There were moments that the chemistry of the characters really worked.

The Bad: In one of my favorite Goodreads’ groups there is a thread asking “What Turns You Off When Reading an Interracial Romance?” This book feels like someone read that thread, and as a gag decided to combine every pet peeve into one book:
1. Racist Exes? Yes.
2. Heroine name drops brands she should not be able to afford? Yeah we got that.
3. Short on plot, but long on bad sex? Check.
4. Caricatures, not Characters? Uh huh.
This even had the added bonus of a hero physically assaulting a woman because of an ill-advised comment. Nothing makes a man more attractive, right?

There were several moments I just could not believe the words flashing across my ereader. My favorite romantic gem might be,
"…It didn't help that his dick was so big that it felt as if he was stabbing her bladder with each stroke…”

This might be the best /worst thing I've read since Ravaged by the Raptor (Dinosaur Erotica) by Christie Sims .

This book was a ball of contradictions and eyebrow-raising for me. While the cover is beautiful, the execution of the story is not so much.

First of all, I couldn't get over how much of an asshole Victoria's boss is. I found it hard to believe that the police department would not lift a finger to help one of its undercover officers when she's in danger because of their directive. WTF?

Secondly, Victoria is a stunningly gorgeous woman - cute face, small waist, big behind, long hair that behaves, great skin...just so much pretty in one package. Don't even get started on her friend Tracy! I am not opposed to women, especially the heroine, being attractive. The world is not filled with ugly people so it stands to reason there will be stories about the ugly as well as the beautiful and the average. However, her looks were harped on constantly throughout the book...mostly by the heroine. We get it! She's drop dead gorgeous!--> "I'd do her!"

Thirdly, Victoria is supposed to be a street smart, somewhat badass cop and yet she has Jack dictating her moves when they barely know each other. She slightly redeems herself when she acknowledges that having unprotected sex and letting this strange man shoot his sperm in her twice is a bit dumb. However, one session of sex with a stranger and by the next day when he calls her she misses him so much and gets with the terms of endearment? Plus someone is stalking her and she ignores all the signs as just her silly ex? Really, madam police? How many domestic violence/ stalker cases went through your PD and how many Lifetime movies need to be made?! Good grief!

Fourth, Jack mostly comes across as an overbearing stalker for 80% of the book. He sees this unknown woman as a prostitute on the street and immediately gets a background check and a man to watch her around the clock? Because he must have her? Is he Pepe LePew?

Fifth, the handling of the race issue by secondary characters just felt flat and a bit...lazy.

Sixth, it seems all Victoria's clothes have first and last names...even before Rico Suave steps into the picture. Almost every time Victoria or somebody else gets dressed they're dripping in designer. Not to say that "regular" people don't wear designer... but almost every shred of clothing? Even the hooker getup? The name dropping of designer labels was just too much. You can show Victoria and whoever else liking designer in an early scene and if you show, and not tell, it to the reader properly you won't have to keep name dropping every time.

Seventh, the book ends on an unnecessary cliffhanger. The story needed no further continuation. The epilogue sets you up for a nice HEA and then introduces three dots when it should have just been one. Period.

I could keep going but I'll end here.

OMG!!!!!!!

Author Phoenix Daniels did the darn thing with her first book. She knocked it straight out of the ball park Woot! Woot!

What can I say Jackson and Victoria...Explosive chemistry, great camaraderie between them and his family, fantastic and protective coworkers and I can go on and on.

I love the action, suspense, murder and of course the hot relations (giggling). These two had so much going on that it was a wonder that they fought hard to be together and even harder to stay alive.

New love, rivalries, jealousy and surprises made this story totally worth the read.

There is a cliffhanger which had me crying out for "Jesus" LOL!!!! I can't wait for the next book but I am patiently waiting because I know book 2 is going to be a scorcher.

Well until my next review Ciao Bellas!

When I give a book a low star rating, I like to post a reason as to why. It’s important to me that other people get a chance to stop from purchasing this book if they can avoid it. Initially this book had a promising premise and the storyline started off pretty interesting. However as the book progressed it just was missing something. The love story seemed very corny/unoriginal, the criminal plot was spotty at best, and the book left with a to be continued that did not need to be there(every book is a series now and every one DOES NOT need to be). It makes me sad to think of this as a continued series. Make sure to read this book at your own risk. I paid 99 cents on my kindle and I still feel a little cheated lol.

This is Victoria and Jack's story. The story takes off for me when the couple finally meet and the fireworks go off from there. I love both characters, it was a very engrossing read and held my attention to the very end. They went through a lot together, shootings, stalker, kidnapping and a few more things that I won't reveal. I struggle to see how book 2 could ever top book 1. However, I am waiting with baited breath for the next installment. I would highly recommend this book, it was an enjoyable read!

I don't remember when this was offered for free and I picked it up. When I did, I didn't know this was a series or I wouldn't have gotten it, because I never know if the second book will be offered on the unlimited kindle, so I tend to just pick up stand alone books. Be that as it may It's been sitting on my kindle for a while and now it's apparently a part of series, with a god awful cliffhanger.

I was close on giving up on it. The writing style was not for me, however I went ahead and finished. The story wasn't that bad, there were plenty of hot scenes, it was just the way the author got the story across that I wasn't a fan.

I also thought that the romance was rushed, and her situation was not realistic.

There is F/F/M action.

Strong sexual content does not convey a specific genre and f/f/m action should be stated upfront in the summary of the book. There is nothing indicating that the h in this story is bisexual until about 80 percent in the book where the question was asked about threesome, then the gratuitous sexual scene where the h seemed to have planned this threesome happened. Threesome are great if that is what floats your boat; however, I have a problem with author's not sharing that information and reviewers conveniently alluded to the sexual situation without quite explaining it. Subconsciously they must know that it is a deal breaker for many. It is for me. Additionally, it adds absolutely nothing to the story. So if you do not mind that sort of thing, then there is nothing offensive in this book other than to say that there is a lot of sexual scenes which makes it boring and tiresome and it ends in a cliffhanger. Potentially a good crime drama that could have been more . So much time was spent on sexual situations that the drama was secondary. After that scene, I lost interest in the characters. I do not think I will be reading the other books in the series.

The merging of different worlds

Victoria Price and Jackson Storm were an unlikely couple but the first time Jack saw her, he had to have her. Victoria, a fiercely independent strong woman was equally smitten by him but did not feel she belonged in his world. Her job as an undercover vice detective was her proud accomplishment and did not take to being spoiled by Jack too well. She wanted to do things on her own. She enjoyed doing her job, and this case of finding who this serial killer was, and who was also stalking her, unbeknownst to her.

She was taken aback by how Jack seemed to melt her guard and she had the same effect on him. He put his life on the line to save her when her own bosses would not.

This was an interesting story full of intrigue, and suspense, with a love story mixed in. I just loved how Jack evolved from being a playboy to being smitten by a Chicago PD undercover vice detective, realizing that he absolutely could not live without her and was miserable being apart from her.

What a Ride!! An Adrenaline Rush!!!

This story was an amazing ride. I gave it 4.8 stars because the story ends with a dang cliffhanger. That said, the story was titillatingly good. The romance between billionaire Jackson Storm and undercover Vice Cop Victoria, who was part of the prostitution unit task force was hot hot hot..Victoria was a beauty and just the type of woman to charm the billionaire business man and steal his heart. Therefore when a stalker started killing prostitutes, Victoria became the object of his affections and set about killing varied ladies of the evening, while all long stalking Victoria. Jackson was determined to keep Victoria safe while at the same token, he wanted to keep his heart safe. He was unsuccessful in this regards, as Victoria was all consuming of his time and his heart. This story was an adrenaline rush, well worth the read. Be aware that the story ends with a cliffhanger...

Great Read!

Great story of Jack a millionaire playboy and hard working Chicago cop Victoria. Victoria, and Jack get together and when they do sparks fly and keep flying throughout the story. Victoria like many woman has experienced love lost due to a bad relationship. Despite her last painful relationship, Vic was determined to make sure all was not lost for her in the "finding love department." They both find best friends and lovers in each other. I think that this is an awesome 1st for Phoenix Daniels. The characters were well developed and I was engaged in the story from the first few pages. The suspense is very good and the romance was popping!!! Phoenix your the bomb and I look forward to more great BOOKS from you for years to come!! You have a new fan whether you like it or not...I really enjoyed this book. NOW I'm On To Book 2, won't you join me!!

I give this one 3.5 stars. My understanding that this is this writers first novel and I must say she did an excellent job overall. I really like Victoria for the most part... but she started to grate on my nerves at some points. For someone who is supposed to be a Vice cop she was a little dense at times. Jack was delicious and awesome. Some of the twists were a little too predictable, except for that I did not see that ball of hotness coming at all. There was a lot of heat... A LOT!!! The story was solid and I'll definitely continue reading this series. Hopefully, this author like most will just get better and better with each book.

To my great surprise, this was actually a fun book to read. I loved the passion between Victoria and Jackson. I love that Ms. Daniels made the Herione-protagonist a kick ass tough compassionate girl with a great heart. Jackson Storm....all I can say is "HUBBA HUBBA" . Tall, lean muscles, dark hair, crystal blue eyes. I mean...DAMN!
I am looking foward to Book 2. I can't wait to be introduced to another sexy man from the Storm family.

Very Disappointed

First time reader of this author. I don't know how I finished. I think I kept hoping it would get better, had to skip some parts because it was too much.Frustrated with the plot and progression of the story. Spoilers*** thought Victoria's character was a smart, strong woman. Annoying that she giving it up to some guy hours after he pays for her, having all this unprotected sex when it's supposed to be "casual" and nobody is committed. You have an unplanned pregnant but no clue or consideration....then your drinking consistently for how long before you figure it out. Your having threesomes, but decides finally to use a condom in this scenerio....But YOU are still not in a committed relationship where you're having safe sex yourself. And btw, can we have a black woman that is not biracial. I know that you can identify however you want, but black women that are black with shoulder length/short pixie/kinky natural ,etc with button or broad noses that are bigger than size 2, brown/caramel/dark skin need to be featured as well. We want to read about our own beauty and sexiness. We have enough media telling us that white/ambiguous or biracial/exotic is the standard of beauty. Tired of this too

Mostly Good

Victoria is working vice as a prostitute when she is spotted by Jackson Storm, self made billionaire. He is intrigued but he does not pursue her because of her work in the oldest profession. He is happy when he sees her on the news and realizes that she is a cop. He pulls out all stops in a stalker like fashion to find all he can about her. This report will come back to bite him. In the meantime, two other stalkers are hovering around: ex boyfriend Dante and and a much more dangerous stalker who is targeting and killing prostitutes. Jackson and Victoria get together but don’t really define their relationship. Unsafe sex practices and the typical too much too soon.
Two things I thought were odd....
1. Jackson kept saying they were exclusive and he nor she would share but they had a threesome with the flight attendant 🤢
2. Victoria, a veteran cop kept getting stalker stuff...notes, writing on her windshield....BUT SHE DID NOTHING...no report...until he escalated by breaking into her apartment.

I liked both characters I just didn’t love all of their choices and I will read the next story in the series.

Beautiful prey

OMG OMG OMG you can’t do this! Damn! A cliffhanger! Omg, this story was amazing. I’m even ignoring the grammar and editing errors they were minor.
Jack! He can’t die! He can’t die! No no no!
I loved Victoria. She would be someone I would want to be friends with. She was classy and boy did Jack flip over her. All it took was one look at her and he was a goner. She had a great group of friends too. Loved Tracy and I hope her and Steve stay together because I think they make a great couple.
The story had twists I didn’t see coming. It kept my interest and I devoured it in one evening. I couldn’t put it down.
I did not care for the threesome on the plane. It kind of creeped me out and I am not sure why it had to be a part of the story. But I digress and say it’s part of Victoria’s character. That part of her life was a bit of a surprise for me.
His sisters were pretty cool too. I hope they find great guys too. Hint, I want this series to continue. I can’t wait to read book 2. Thank you!

Warning,,, Cliffhanger!

There was no warning that this was going to be a cliffhanger! However, I'm glad I have 3 more lined up in this series.
The story line was well developed, quickly paced & really, really good; the characters have been well developed & the chemistry amongst them is wonderful.
Being from a family of Peace Officers and not being one myself, I really enjoy reading police stories. And, who wouldn't want to hook up with a gorgeous billionaire alpha businessman.
I believe the author has a history with the police department so I look forward to more intriguingly hot stories..

Predictable

I read Blood Ties and absolutely LOVED the book so I tried another book by this author and was disappointed. This book like many others, it had the lady giving it up pretty much as soon as she met him without him working for it. Sex was on every page pretty much, as a matter of fact sex was 50% of the book. I'm more a storyline girl, so this book didn't do it for me. I didn't like the sex with the chick on the plane either. I almost didn't finish the book but I was already in the last chapter so I finished it. I won't be finishing the series.

Read. Swoon. Repeat!

I read this novel one year ago during the fall season and was scrolling through my Kindle library this weekend of first snow and decided to revisit one of my favorite book boyfriends of all time: Jack Storm (and the inimitable Victoria, his lady love). Whew! This book is just as good the second time around, maybe even more so because of the anticipation of a guaranteed exquisite read. Mouth watering, suspenseful, and great chemistry with a dash of humor equals a five star rating. Well done, Ms. Daniels!

Fantastic!!!!!!!!

An unconventional love story. Jack fell in love with Victoria pretty much straight away. The story progressed at a nice pace. Due to the brilliance of the author I was not able to predict the ending.........which gives this book a 10/10.
Lots of good characters, I liked the team Victoria worked with.
Definitely give this a try. I had read the Creed series before this book, so I already had been introduced to Victoria and Jack.

Third Phoenix Daniels book that I have read

I hope she continues her series set in Louisiana, with witches, vampires, shifters and voodoo queens. The first book of this series is very good with a few sexual surprises here and there. It ends with a cliffhanger (4 stars instead of 5). However, a tough female heroine that can kickass when needed is awesome and motivates me to read book 2!

I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed the characters and storyline. Victoria was a bad girl. She was a strong woman who could definitely take care of herself and Jack? I think I've found my new crush. The story had enough romance and suspense. Ms. Daniels, I congratulate on a job well done. I can't wait to l read the next book in the series!
