"They say, the truth will set you free. My truth is killing me."
Amber is starting over in a new state where no one knows her. New roommate, new college and most importantly new freedoms.
Away from home for the first time, Amber isn’t above using a guy for one night and leaving it at that. She doesn't want to get tied down with one person. She just wants to experience the college life and take advantage of being on her own. So, when Amber’s new BFF Renee invites her to an underground drag racing competition, Amber sets her sights on driver/playboy Layne… and their attraction is mutual.
With his good looks and boyish charm, Layne is popular with the ladies on campus, but Amber thinks one night with him is all she needs to get him out of her system. Little does Amber know that Layne sees things differently, and after their hookup he wants something more. Will Amber open up and let Layne in, or will she run away?
Will the unspoken truth be too much for either of them to handle?

I've read this authors other books but I think this is her best yet. I just loved how I read the description and thought yes I'm gonna like this book... Then bam!! The truth hits you. That this book is so much more than the description. This book certainly had the shock factor. It gave me goosebumps and then the tears started. Just thinking about this storyline has me holding my breath. As much as I loved this authors other books this one blew my socks off me... Yes it's that good. This is certainly a book that will stay with me for a long time. Amazing piece of writing that may have you grabbing the tissues. Well done to the author for another fantastic story. Looking forward to reading more from you.
I just wish I could have give more stars for this book. I was captured by it right away and had to pick my Kindle up at every chance I had.
A friend of mine got to read it before me, so I was interested in talking to her about it after her review. I was told......get your tissues out.
There was so much involved in this book, I was so taken with the characters. I loved Layne. Who wouldn't want someone as pure, honest and loving as him. He took a lot from his 'hoped for' relationship with Amber.
Amber was a very determine young lady, she had her secret to keep. And toward the end of the book it became clear to me why this was. I have read previous books by this author, I have to say, this is the best one I have read, which is hard to say because she 'gets me' every time. I can't wait for book 2!! If book 2 has the same effect on me as book 1 I'll be a wreck by the end of the year! I closed my Kindle at the end of this book and held it to my chest and sobbed.
***I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Nerd Alert Book Love Blog*** Amber is leaving her small town to go away to college. A fresh start with new friends and new freedoms. Amber is not looking for a relationship, she wants to enjoy and really live the college experience. But will the college life really turn out the way she planned? Through her roommate and new best friend, Amber meets Layne. Layne is a true bad boy, a well known player, and an underground race car driver. He lives life by his own set of rules and loves racing. Layne and Amber have an instant intense attraction to each other. Layne doesn't realize but Amber is about to turn his whole world upside down. Amber also meets pretty, preppy boy Chase and is instantly won over by his gorgeous looks, sweet smile, and beautiful green eyes. Chase feels an instant recognition with Amber and they form an instant friendship. "...You have my heart, Amber Jean Locks. You've had it since the first day we met. I knew we would be together..." What will happen when Amber has a one night hook up with Layne and he makes it clear he wants more than one night? What is the real reason why Amber is keeping people at arm's length? What will happen with her friendship with Chase when Layne starts getting jealous and when Chase finds out what Amber is hiding? Will her friends be there for her or will all she have is her family once the truth is out? "...Thank you. I've never felt more alive than I do right this moment, with you. You made me feel..." Renea Porter is about to take you on a very emotional roller coaster ride. She will make you laugh and she will make you cry. You will fall in love with this beautiful story of a girl fighting to live life the way she wants and the incredible people she meets along the way. I can not wait to read their stories as they come out but until then I give Driving Layne a Nerd Alert A or 4.5 stars.
This is a beautiful and heartbreaking story. Amber goes away to college a good distance from her home because she wants a little bit of normal. She doesn't want people to look at her with pity, she just wants to have something for her. Her parents love her and understand what she needs and they are still married and live on their ranch. She has an older sister that does drugs and such and causes problems. Through her new roommate, Renee, she goes to an illegal drag race and meets Layne. He is gorgeous and she's drawn to him immediately but he's a player. Amber isn't looking for a relationship and just wants a night with him. Once classes start, Layne makes it clear that he wants a relationship with her and won't take no for an answer.
Amber is keeping a huge secret. She doesn't want people to look at her with pity or act different around her. She wants a chance to live her life for a little while. Immediately she likes Renee and thinks they are going to be great friends. Her first look at Layne just draws her in and she wants to have one night. She doesn't want to hurt anyone and she doesn't want to be hurt either. She also meets another great guy Chase and he's a wonderful friend. He's good looking but she can't give him her heart because it already belongs to Layne. She cares about the people in her life and doesn't want to waste what little time she has.
Layne races illegally and he hooks up with all types of women. He doesn't let many people get close to him. His father is now in a wheelchair from racing. There is something about Amber that draws him in. He can't help but want more than just one night with her. Even though she keeps pushing him away, he will do whatever he needs to to show her that she is something wonderful.
Reading this book you will need a box of tissues. It had me in tears, so much so that I had to stop in the middle of reading. It was very touching. I didn’t have to try to be in Layne's shoes to FEEL because I was or have been in the situation he was in, quite a few times. I won’t say what it is because that would spoil the story.
This type of book I generally try to stay away from because it gets to me on a deep level. It involves heartache but I won’t say as to why that is or I will give too much away. There’s also a feeling of adrenaline pumping through your veins since Layne is a race car driver. Once I got into this book it had me really emotional, there was just so much going on.
I loved Layne so much. A bad boy who had a line of women for him to take his pick from. But when he met Amber everything changed, he became who I wanted or expected him to be. He fell in love with Amber at first sight.
Amber was very independent and just wants to live a normal life...as if nothing major is changing. And she has a secret to keep...the reason why she doesn’t get involved in a relationship.
Avoiding Layne was kind of a hard thing to do since Layne was very persistent. You’ll have to read this to find out the rest of their emotion journey.
I enjoyed reading this book and I'm looking forward to reading book two in the series.
Driving Layne begins with college freshman Amber leaving her family home in Texas to attend college at Oklahoma State University. Amber's goal is to live like a "normal" college student (*bells ring here). Right away the readers knows that there is a "big" antagonist in Amber's life but it does take a while for it to officially be announces. As I don't want to give away any spoilers that is all I will say. We follow Amber's journey beginning college, living with a roommate that eventually becomes her best friend, as well as peeking the interest of two very different young men and later falling in love with one.
The characters were well-written and developed. I thought the author's writing developed during the book, making me fall in love with Amber and her friends. There were some editing mistakes and sometimes, I didn't always feel like there were smooth transitions between scenes, but not enough that I felt that it distracted from the over-all story.
Additionally, you WILL need a box of tissues and you may feel like throwing your Kindle at the end but that just proves Ms. Porter's ability to pull the reader into the story and make the reader care for her characters.
Holy freaking cow! WOW!!! I finished this book this morning and it has taken me all day to get my thoughts together on how to write this review. The description does not do this book justice. It came up on my list of books to read for the blog and I just thought, yeah this book will be good. It will be a light read and boy was I wrong on all accounts. This book was FANTASTIC and gave me the worst book hangover I have had in a really long time. This book definitely has the shock factor to it. I mean you know something is coming, but you really are not expecting it to happen the way it does. I really can't say more without giving anything away, but this is a MUST read!! Every single character in this book, from Amber, Layne, Renee, Dylan, and Chase, they all add a different element to this story. It was amazingly written and I can not wait to read the next books that will carry on these characters. Be prepared for a total emotional overload and have your tissues ready. Just typing this review is giving me goosebumbs and has the tears flowing as I think about the story again in my head. Just WOW!!! This book deserves a whole lot more than just 5 AMAZEBALLS stars!!
Everything is too fast and I mean fast. First ever college party she asks her roommate to introduce her to Layne. They sleep together and the sex was like so robotic. No feelings, nothing. Boring. The rest was just the same. Too robotic it's like the author is writing for the sake of writing and doesn't really give a shit. The characters are so dull and humorless. Nothing about this book is nice.
And I don't get her roommate, one moment she's warning her off Layne, the next she's telling her how lucky she is to have his attention then she goes back to telling her he's bad news.
"Love you like a sister?" They barely interacted the whole time wtf!
Chase and Amber have more interaction than Layne and Amber I'm so confused. Chase is even sweeter.
Anyways I stopped reading after I found out she was sick. She doesn't act like she's sick. The author did a bad job at giving her the cancer role because I think the author doesn't know anything about that sickness.
I feel like i got punked into reading this. The reviews were mostly five stars but i wasn't feeling the five stars. Am I the only one? With respect to the author, sorry it's not for me. Nice try tho.
Terrible book. Such a waste of time. #sorrynotsorry
Looking for a suspense? ✅ a love triangle?✅ best friend who looks after you✅ keeps your attention? ✅.
You have a bit of what's happening from the beginning. The girl comes out with a care free attitude, but deep down you know she is complicated. Two great guys that make you want to root for one over the other twilight style. Yes this book had my attention. I had to know what would happen next, it had me in mix emotions. When a book does this it already catches my attention. It's not always easy to draw in your audience.
I love finding new writers and give their books a chance. It's also wonderful to see how their stories evolve and grow into more. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I say take a chance it give it a read. If for anything Layne my favorite character in the book is witty, handsome, and alpha straight up. He is worth learning about.
Oh and ps bring the tissue... Will definitely draw water works. I haven't read a book that made my cry like this one in a while. I had to re read the ending to understand what happened. It will tear your heart but make you fawn over Layne. And ladies what women doesn't want to be there when a man is in pain.
I LOVED this book! The character were all amazing and written so well where I felt the emotion they were going through.. I laughed and cried throughout the whole book. Amber has been dealt a tough hand but she always has on a happy face and is one strong character. I loved Layne and Chase they were both so swoon worthy. I loved that Layne never once gave up on his love for Amber even when she tried to push him away he held on strong. Their relationship is something special. Chase was such an amazing trusting friend for Amber and there when she needed someone the most. Renee was a fun loving friend who would do anything for Amber they were more like sisters. Driving Layne is a book that will stay with you once you are done. Renea did such a great job I've read her other books but this one is by far my favorite.
We have to live life to the fullest, no regrets. Take chances and don't look back. you never know what will come around the corner and things might not go the way you want them. Driving Layne is a story that shows us that we should love our life to the fullest, because as I said before you never know what will happen next. beautifully written it took my breath away. I most enjoyed how both Amber and Layne found love something neither one was looking for much less wanting to experience. are they glad they found it? Yes because what is life unless you find love. This book tugs at you heart and leaves you better than when you started reading it. I highly recommend that you have a big box of tissue ready because this will pull every tear that you have in you. I am now happy to have Kayne as my new BBF! ( and no I am not sharing!)
Driving Layne is one of those books that sticks with you after you read it. Layne and Amber are two beautifully crafted characters. I laughed, I cried, I dreamed of their happiness, their love. I applaud the author for her amazing writing skill, and storytelling devices. I have been lucky enough to read all of her novels, but Driving Layne is in a world of its own!
Passionate. Angst. Love. Truth.
I won’t give any more away, but I think everyone should give this a chance. It’s truly something worth diving into.
Was this book good? Yes. Was is well written? Yes, and I can certainly see Renea Porter's potential as a writer. Yes, it was a good book, but it needs a warning label. It's heartbreaking. While I enjoyed it, it also gutted me. I wasn't prepared for it, which was maybe a good thing. It does show that the book was well written because I was engrossed enough to be shattered by it. Another warning, there is a love triangle, so if that bothers you...fair warning! All in all, good job Renea! I will be reading the next book!
I had the pleasure of beta reading for Renea Porter. If you read one book this year, make it this one! This is a heart warming romance. The characters are well rounded and the storyline flowed well. I fell in love with the characters within the first chapter. I laughed. I cheered and I cried. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. This is one of the best books that I have read in a long time! I highly recommend!
Driving Lane is a heck of a ride. Simultaneously funny and poignant at the same time, Renea Porter manages to capture the reader's heart on the very first page, achieving a delicate balance of fun and sadness without waxing too morose. It's a quick read, but I didn't feel too sad after it was over because I knew that Driving Lane is only Book I of the Unspoken Truth series. It's the perfect beach read!
Amber is starting college. She becomes best friends with her roommate. She's introduced to Layne. She's been told he's a player. But as they get to know one another a spark forms. Will her secret be too much for Layne.
I have to say. I loved this book. It shows the power of true love & loyal friends. I ugly cried through the ending. I love Renea's style of writing. She's amazing at just about anything. This woman knows how to write a story.
Okay my review for this AMAZING book!! WOW!! I love this author so much, She really knows how to draw the reader in. The storyline was so good I couldn't put this book down. The characters omg I love them!!!
My emotions were all over the board but it was wroth it!! Great job, I highly recommend this book!!!
I have to say first that if u don't read this book and cry something is wrong . i loved that amber didn't just let life get the better she went lived it to the fullest she even let her self know love and man it had. my heart was hoping for a HEA but this story is definitely not one you wanna miss out on. can not wait for book 2
Omg what can I say this book is amazing. I could barley see through the tears to finish the book. I highly highly recommend this book. Can't wait to see what is in store for Layne in book 2
Wow!! This book is beautiful beyond words!! It is a emotional ride that smacks you in the face but its a book you can't put down!!! It is a must read but be prepared and tissues near by!!!
This is one of those books that should come with those little travel packs of tissues. Now don't get me wrong I absolutely loved this story it was so well written and the characters were amazing and easy to connect with. This story will tear you apart in so many ways but will leave you wanting to read it over again, I was listening to Trisha Yearwood's song I would've Loved You Anyway awhile after I finished this book and it brought a smile to my face as I immediately thought of this book as this song suites this story to a tee.
***SPOILER ALERT*** this book was kind of all over the place. It was okay in the beginning but then it just kept getting worse and worse. I was also really mad about the ending..
