Taking action-packed to a whole new level, Enemy of the State had my fingers flying through the pages as my eyes whizzed across the words. The second book in the Killing Room series, it was no surprise that my colleagues at Thriller Book Lovers: The Pulse have been shouting about this one from the rafters. After all, the dynamite characters, jaw-dropping twists, and explosive pacing meant that I read it in just a handful of hours. You heard me, despite the near 400 pages, I found myself almost skimming so that I could find out the spine-tingling whos, whats, and whys.

The plot began from the moment The Killing Room ended. With nary a lull, the action movie-esque feel continued right on cue. With a well-plotted, deftly layered storyline that twisted and turned, this newest novel even delivered several humdinger twists. The kind where I gasped in delight as I shouted “Wait, WHAT?!” with unadulterated glee. Trust me when I say that this was like a finely tuned climax from beginning to end. One where you absolutely don’t want the carnage to stop no matter what.

As for the characters, while Daniel easily reminded me of a more likeable Jason Bourne, I found myself rooting for not only him, but his compatriots as well. For that reason, I actually liked this sophomore work better than the first in the series. Add into the mix a smattering of villains that ran the gamut from evil overlord to merely gullible, and I was firmly in their thrall as they raced to catch their wanted man—wherever he was.

The only piece to the puzzle that didn’t win me over hook, line, and sinker was the conclusion. A blatant cliffhanger ending, it seriously made me want to hurl my tablet across the room. Of course, that’s mostly because I’m that irritating type of reader who loves finales with neat, pretty, little bows. So if you don’t mind an unresolved plot line or two, you’ll definitely be over the moon when you reach the last heart-seizing page.

All in all, from the riveting game of cat-and-mouse to the well-crafted multiple POVs, I was utterly spellbound by Swartwood’s newest novel. I mean, I honestly don’t normally go for “dad book” type plots, but somehow this one ended up being a winner for me. So even if you aren’t an out-and-out fan of action/spy/crime thrillers (it has a bit of all three), I definitely recommend trying out this propulsive series. And don’t worry, if you’d rather start with this one instead, it can certainly be read as a stand-alone all things considered. Rating of 4.5 stars.

A disappointing 1-Star DNF for "Enemy of the State", a book I had expected to enjoy.
I listen and read to a lot more fiction than non-fiction and Fiction is the main genre I enjoy - because I love "stories"!
Listening to fictional 'action' or 'crime' stories, and the like, I have learned to expect the unexpected, applaud the implausible, and tolerate most of the 'Deus ex Machina' plot-solving resolutions thrown at me by the author.
The 'story' within "Enemy of the State" failed miserably on all counts.

Further comments to come...

Extracts from my "Listening Activity":
15/10/2024 @10%: "#2 Enemy of the State" was the book that first attracted me to this series, so I started this as soon as I finished "#1 Killing Room", which barely warranted a 3-Star rating. All helpful recap so far, but we will see how it progresses."
17/10/2024 @40%: "40% in and I am bored. Our hero has escaped from three inescapable situations, so he needs to survive probably three more unsurvivable events, then face the grand finale! "

The sequel to The Killing Room is here!!! Last year I read and couldn’t get enough of Daniel Burkes first adventure in Las Vegas, and Enemy of the State picks right up where The Killing Room left off. After everything that had happened, all Daniel wants to do is get out of town, but things get complicated when his former team of operatives are hunting him down., the government want him brought in as a traitor to his country!!

Now if you read the first book, you know that Daniel is not taking this laying down. He knows he is innocent, being framed and will not let this happen. But who can he trust? Seriously, everyone has secrets, everyone is part of something dodgy and nobody is who they say they are. But Daniel knows this, he trusts nobody and is out to save himself.

This book is non stop action from start to finish, and once again leaves it wide open for the next book. Daniel is dealing with some pretty awful people and his training comes into play, not everyone will live to see another day. There is motorcycle gangs, kidnapping, lots of heavy weapons and firearms, car chases, you name it, it is probably in here. I loved it!!

Massive thanks to Robert Swartwood for sending me an early copy to read again, you are amazing!!

♠️In a follow-up to “The Killing Room” (if you haven’t read it yet I recommend you do) Swartwood has crafted another heart-pounding, unputdownable, thriller of a ride, story.

This story is fast-paced with incredible action, twists, and heart. The action will have you on the edge of your seat with your heart pounding.

Expertly written and plotted, this book showcases why Swartwood is one of the top action/thriller writers of all time. Can’t wait to see what he creates next.

Enemy of the State is a nail-biting, fast-paced adventure that keeps you glued to the page and doesn't let go. Daniel Burke's character reminds me of Jason Bourne, Jack Reacher, and a little of John Wick with his training, his cunning, resourcefulness, and his sense of invincibility. His goal is huge in proving he isn't an enemy of the state and exposing the real bad guy. Although I didn't have time to read the first book of the series, I had no problem following this storyline with enough details woven in from book one to make it work for readers picking this one up first. I highly recommend this series for fans of spy thrillers, crime thrillers, and electric pacing.

"Stuffing the phones into my pants pockets, I secured the spent Glock in my rear waistband, slipped my left hand---the one still wearing the handcuffs---into my hoodie pocket, then started toward an alley only twenty feet away, and did the only thing left for me to do.
I ran."

The first book of this series is The Killing Room. I HIGHLY recommend you read that book first and be WARNED this review may contain spoilers of that book. There is also some rough content, so please check the warnings.

Danny is BACK! I’m absolutely loving this character! ENEMY OF THE STATE is a high octane, no holds barred, FAST paced, action thriller. It starts with intensity and doesn’t let up! Danny used to belong to an elite team of operators who were sent in to “clean up” situations and get information out of people by any means necessary. They worked out of a black site that only a few people in charge even knew existed. Now, Danny’s former team is after HIM, because he’s been labeled a traitor to his country.

I couldn’t read this fast enough y’all. I loved THE KILLING ROOM and this one is just as awesome! There’s shoot outs, chases, hand to hand combat, intense standoffs, hackers, nefarious characters, surprise heroes, and oh yeah, a run in with an MC (motorcycle club)! Danny is a fascinating character. Is he a good guy? Maybe. Is he a bad guy? Mmmm Maybe? The moral ambiguity just makes for a realistic anti hero. Having Stephanie along for the ride this time, (after getting her involved in book one) with her holding her own among Danny’s world was so much FUN!

I had the pleasure of listening to the audio along with the physical book and Edoardo Ballerini’s performance was SUPERB! He had subtle nuances for different voices and his excellent modulation made for an exciting experience, especially with all the action! I need this to be a television series a la 'The Terminal List' or 'Bourne Identity style'. (IFKYK!) I have a bone to pick with you though Robert , and it’s that you keep leaving me wanting MORE! Where is book three sir??? I’m gonna need Quinn and Rita to be in it also mmmmkay?

Wahoooooooooo! 💃You hear me yelling and see me dancing from here! Robert Swartwood once again delivers an edge of your seat, heart-pounding, nerve wracking, hair raising, exciting story that will keep you flipping pages as fast as you can!💥 I just absolutely love this “Jason Bourne-esque” series. Daniel Burke is such a strong and intelligent character who can get out of just about any complex scenario. 👊🏻I cannot get enough of how creative Daniel is when he’s put in a tough spot. This series for me is completely addicting and Robert sets it up where dun dun dun….will be more! I am telling you all you MUST read this series. Killing Room was the first book in this series and it is not to be missed! It was a top book for me of the year last year so you can imagine my excitement as I received this one! If you are looking for a fast paced, action packed, filled with traitorous ways make sure to mark your calendars for August because you will not want to miss this stressful wild ride! 🇷🇺

Summary: The world believed Daniel Burke was dead. At least, the few people in the government who knew he existed did. Once part of an elite black op team, Burke faked his death so he could avenge the death of his brother. Now that those responsible have been brought to justice, he plans to leave the country and start a new life, but before he can get away, his former boss and teammates have tracked him down. The CIA believes Daniel Burke is a traitor—an enemy of the state—who must answer for his crimes. Others simply want him dead. Burke has been framed, and he is the only one who can track down and expose the real traitor—before it’s too late.

Thoughts: This is a sequel to The Killing Room, which I have not read. I found that there was enough context provided so that this did not present any real barriers to understanding the action and storyline. It is non-stop spills and thrills - an action lover's dream combination of espionage, car chases, hand-to-hand combat and shootouts! Yet the underlying plot is strong enough to support the story. And despite Burke's despicable deeds in the past, he is actually quite vulnerable and likeable. If you are a fan of Jack Reacher or Jason Bourne, then this is a must-read for you. Thanks to Blackstone Publishing for the copy to read.

After faking his own death to avenge his brother, Daniel Burke was ready to start a new life. But the former member of an elite back op team doesn’t even make it onto his plane before his old team tracks him down. The CIA believes that Daniel Burke is a traitor - an enemy of the state. However, there are others in the government who just want him dead. Knowing he’s been set up, Burke must expose the true traitor before his time runs out.

”The Killing Room” was one of my favorite books last year so I was thrilled to see it had a sequel coming out! Robert Swartswood once again crafted an action-packed novel full of his signature twists and turns. I really love Daniel as a character, how intelligent and resourceful he is and can figure his way out of just about any situation. He also has a lot of heart, which you don’t always see in action stories. If you enjoy high-energy action adventures, you NEED to read this series! My friends at the Pulse and I have been all over it!

Thanks to Robert Swartswood and Blackstone Publishing for the ARC! “Enemy of the State” releases August 20, 2024! This review will be shared to my instagram blog (@books_by_the_bottle) shortly :)

My friends at Thriller Book Lovers: The Pulse have been buzzing about this series since The Killing Room came out last August. The sequel, Enemy of the State, picks up right where The Killing Room left off, and it’s even more of a thrill ride its predecessor! Daniel Burke has been branded a traitor to his country, and operatives from his old team are tasked to bring him in. They had one job: get Daniel on the plane. Spoiler alert (not really!): they failed and chaos immediately ensued. Daniel is on the run and out to prove his innocence, but who can he trust?

This book is incredibly fast paced and the action is non-stop! There are car chases, gun fights, hand-to-hand combat, and that’s just scratching the surface. Just like the first book, this one ends on a cliffhanger and will have you waiting impatiently for book #3! If you enjoy books with political intrigue and espionage-type thrillers, this series is for you! Perfect for fans of Jason Bourne, Jack Reacher, and novels by Vince Flynn.

Man, did we TBL Pulsers hit gold with this gem of a series! The intricacies of this plot are insane. Swartwood is truly a master of his craft. (I should just end my review here…🤷🏼‍♀️)

ENEMY OF THE STATE picks up right where THE KILLING ROOM left off—and that means the pacing is on point right out of the gate! The action never ceases and it makes for a helluva fun ride! I’m officially obsessed with this series! More please!

A fast-paced thriller perfect for Baldacci fans.

I enjoyed this quick read with a complex approach to the storyline and lots of action. At times I was a little put off by the FMCs anger toward the MC but it makes some sense in the situation.

While it wasn’t my favorite thriller read of the year it was good and entertaining.

Note: Language and violence

Now I know why all my friends with @thrillerbookloversthepulse have been buzzing about this book! It was incredibly fast paced & action packed from the first chapter! It continued at this pace the. Whole. Dang. Book. @robertswartwood can write a story. It gave me Jason Bourne vibes which I loved! I am always a huge fan of multiple POVs in a novel. Although this book is second in the Killing Room series, I felt like Robert did an excellent job at pulling me into this world & catching me up, as I had not read the first book in the series yet. So, I feel that Enemy of the State can be read as a stand-alone. But if you’re like me, you’ll be adding The Killing Room to your TBR to pick up immediately! Did I mention I was gasping at the ending?! You’ll want to turn the pages on this one you all.

Thank you to @thrillerbookloversthepulse for introducing me to Robert’s heart pounding novel! & thank you to @robertswartwood & @blackstonepublishing for this wonderful book & merch!

This is the 2nd novel in the Killing Room series. If you like fast-paced, trilling government novels about the CIA you are in for a surprise.

Daniel Burke is thought to be a traitor by the CIA. First, thought to be dead, but now we know he is not. Burke knows he is not a traitor and tries to prove his innocence.
Love this series. So professional and nail biting.

📚 PUBLICATION MONTH BOOK TOUR BOOK REVIEW 📚

Enemy of the State By Robert Swartwood
Publication Date: August 20, 2024
Publisher: Blackstone Publishing

📚MY RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

📚MY REVIEW:

Be still my racing heart -- this book was INCREDIBLE! When I read and reviewed the first book in this series, The Killing Room, I declared that one would be the "action thriller against which all other action thrillers will be assessed." Well, challenge accepted and challenge SURPASSED by Robert Swartwood with the second book in this series, Enemy of the State.

The action-packed, heart-pounding plotline in Enemy of the State picked up right where The Killing Room left us. This book went from zero to sixty in mere seconds and I was, once again, immediately hooked.

Swartwood's writing creates such masterfully constructed, edge-of-your-seat storytelling, you will be hard-pressed to put this book down for even one minute without jumping out of your skin to learn what comes next! Seriously, y'all, the action and the twists in this one are NON-STOP.

And just as I did in the first book, I could see this entire book playing out so vividly in my head. Swartwood has an ability to describe scenes and events with the precise amount of detail. Not too much to overwhelm your senses, but just the right amount to allow your mind to visualize the scene perfectly. It's mind-boggling how reading 100 pages in this book felt like a blip in time because the words flowed so smoothly as the plot unfolded so brilliantly.

Everybody in this book had secrets, and with each revelation, I wondered which character would ultimately be shown to be a truth-teller. The numerous twists and turns left me stunned and shocked nearly every step of the way. And here we are again, with yet another cliffhanger ending?! The good news: it's fair to say a third installment in this series could be forthcoming. The bad news: I have to wait for it. What I know for sure is that, given the incredible action-packed storytelling in this series, anything by Swartwood is a book worth waiting for.

If you still haven't taken my advice to read The Killing Room, and are considering my advice to read Enemy of the State, I am doubling down now: GET TO IT. This series will appeal to literally EVERYONE and ANYONE with a pulse. Fast-paced, action-packed, gripping, riveting, twisty, heart-pounding...all the things. Do yourself a favor, like I said before, and get these books. Both of them. Once you start them, I challenge you to put them down.

Actually, I don't. That's an impossible challenge. Why would I do that to you?! Just trust me when I tell you to read these books, okay?

A massive thanks to everybody over at Thriller Book Lovers The Pulse for introducing me to this series and inviting me to be a part of the book tour. And a huge thank you to Robert Swartwood and Blackstone Publishing for the advanced copy of this book and all the cool merch in exchange for my honest review. Top notch!

This was the follow up book in a new series that took me completely by surprise. I read my first Robert Swartwood book - The Killing Room- just recently and it really blew me away. I was surprised with how much I enjoyed it. So, when I was awarded the audio ARC for the follow up book - I was thrilled.

First let me say that I am already a fan of Edoardo Ballerini as a narrator, so that was just a bonus.

This book takes off immediately after the events of the previous book. Our MMC Daniel Burke was on his way onto a plane to head out into the sunset since he had just finished dealing with his brothers' situation. Unfortunately, some people had other plans for him. Now that he has come back from faking his death, he makes the perfect scapegoat for those who have things to hide.

This was one of those books where there is non stop action, but the events are moving so quickly that you as the reader are never really sure who is on which side. In other words, we know there are certain bad guys, but we also begin to find out that there are more bad guys than we were aware of in the beginning.

It also feels like the more Daniel attempts to come up with ways to prove his innocence - and he IS determined to find and deliver proof - well, it then seems like there are even MORE people trying to kill him. Not to mention that the longer the story goes on, the more deaths are pinned on him.

Daniel is a likeable character. He is also a flawed character, and we are given peeks into his past- into his actions in The Killing Room -so we are not fooled into thinking that he was an angel. But, it feels like there are things he did in his past that he is now trying to atone for, or at least to make certain things right.

We also get a couple of new secondary characters that help to round out this rag tag gang and they all seem to help make the storyline even more interesting.

The only comment that I have is that this book is not wrapped up nice and neat with a bow at the end. In fact, it is almost the opposite - setting things up for the next book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Blackstone Publishing - Audiobooks for the opportunity to listen to and review this audio arc. The opinions above are mine and mine alone.

This was a pedal to the metal ride from page one. Full speed ahead from how book one ended, Daniel is now really on the run and has multiple alphabet agencies after him, but only one group really knows the ins and outs of how to find and catch Daniel. They were the ones who trained him after all. Get him on the plane. That was the directive, the task and all hell breaks loose and the mission is a fail. With Daniel once again on the run and elusive to the team who has now been shown to believe he really is the traitor that he appears to be and now they are out for blood. When the team's actions are called into question and a member from the CIA is sent to babysit, it seems that this team is not as well organized as led to believe and as each mission to bring Daniel down gets blown apart and only more casualties continue to build, soon the very top chief has to be briefed. The very last person they wanted knowing anything about this team and the elusive Daniel Burke, is now at risk with this knowledge. Putting his trust in someone from his past and with the help from a friend of his brother's, he puts together a plan to prove his innocence and bring out the true culprit who is behind this all. The one who started it all in The Killing Room. This was a wild ride and I loved every page. Thriller Book Lovers the Pulse has fallen in love with the thrill ride, the character Daniel Burke has taken us on. Thank you to NetGalley and to the author for the complementary ebook. This review is of my own opinion and accord.

Thank you to ThrillerBookLovers The Pulse, Blackstone Publishing, #partner, for an ALC of Enemy of the State in exchange for my honest review.

Once again, I am going to start my review by saying…don’t be fooled by this cover! This is such a great crime thriller and once I started it, I didn’t want to put it down. ⁣We over at The Pulse – @thrillerbookloversthepulse – have been buzzing about this sequel to The Killing Room and for good reason!

This book picks up shortly after the previous books left off, and takes off! And if you haven’t read that first book – not too worry. The author does a great job giving you just enough backstory to get you up to speed, but I’m telling you, it’s such a good book you really want to read it. ⁣

But back to this one. Daniel is on the run because the government wants him and it’s not all that clear whether they mean alive or dead. As he is trying to stay one step ahead of them, we learn some interesting things along the way…and I’ll leave it at that…⁣

This book kept me completely engaged from start to finish. I didn’t think I was a fan of espionage thrillers until I read these books…but now I want more! This adrenaline-fueled story had my heart pumping but the series lover in me loved the character development just as much!⁣

Audio thoughts: Once again, we have Edoardo Ballerini narrating this…need I say more? Absolutely brilliant narration!

This is the second book in the 𝘒𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘙𝘰𝘰𝘮 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴, and should be read in order, however, the author does a good job catching you up, so it could be read as a standalone.

This picks up right where 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘒𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘙𝘰𝘰𝘮 left off. This gets going right away, and keeps going up until the very end. Daniel is still on the run, and I absolutely love seeing the things he comes up with when does I’m stuck in a hard spot. This is such a fast paced and exciting read. Highly recommend.

𝗕𝗟𝗨𝗥𝗕:
From USA Today bestselling author Robert Swartwood comes Enemy of the State, the propulsive, thrilling, and much anticipated follow-up to The Killing Room …
The world believed Daniel Burke was dead.

But before Burke can even get on the plane, his old team has tracked him down.
The CIA believes Daniel Burke is a traitor—an enemy of the state—who must answer for his crimes. But others in government simply want him dead.
Knowing he’s been set up, Burke is the only one who can track down and expose the real traitor—before it’s too late.

One year ago, Daniel Burke faked his death. The only people who now knew about his death was the secret elite op team that he worked for. Burke was seeking vengeance against those who killed his brother. Now, all he wants is to start over somewhere new. As he was getting ready to board his plane to do just that, members of his old team were ready to intercept him to prevent that. Some government agencies want him arrested, and others want him killed for being a traitor. It's up to Burke to find out who is behind setting him up and who the real traitor is.

Enemy of the State is nonstop action packed from the very first page. Unfortunately, I did not read the first book in this series before this one, and I really regret that. I'm finding one day to go back and read the first book because oh my wow! This book was absolutely phenomenal. It's one of the best thrillers I've read all year. Daniel Burke has just become the enemy of the state, and he's bound, set, and determined to find the evidence he needs to prove his innocence. Every step of the way, he has to watch his back because someone is constantly out to get him. This novel will keep you turning pages until the very end, not only for the action, but to figure out who the heck is behind everything. Trust me, I did not move until I finished this entire book. So, when's the next book coming out? 😅

Killing Room #2
452 pages – but don’t let that deter you. It is really that good.

If you haven’t read the Killing Room… what even. Like really. It is so good. This is the follow up to The Killing Room. I highly suggest that you read Killing Room first. Everyone believed that Daniel Burke was dead (except for a few choice people). He is hated by many, even the CIA and they want him punished.

My husband and I literally had to draw straws over who would read this first. Danny is back and this is a high octane, nonstop, immersive adventure. If you like espionage, hand to hand combat, motorcycle clubs, kidnappings and books with a lot of heavy firearms – this is your next read. I keep finding myself drawn to military thrillers (ish) every single time. (I need a good firefight)

Warning, there is a cliffhanger at the end that will have you so unbelievably frustrated for the next one you may as well go ahead and order it as soon as possible. Please don’t make us wait for a year! And just so you know I will be at Bouchercon 2024 with the author and you know I am going to ask when we get the next one!

I was nervous going into the sequel of The Killing Room because I loved that one so much, that this wouldn’t live up the hype I placed on it. I was wrong; it lived up to the hype! While these books were similar in their writing style and how fast paced, and action packed they were, they are very different stories!

If you loved the show Scandal, this is your book! It has a secret organization that the president gets filled in on, scandals, a situation room, fixers, and so much more. Daniel gives me Jake, the head of B613 in Scandal, vibes.

While you don’t have to read The Killing Room first, I highly suggest it based on how this one ends. It won’t have the same shock factor like it did for me if you don’t read the first book beforehand. Lot of twists and turns and an ending that leaves you wanting more! My friends over at Thrillerloversthepulse weren’t kidding when they said this one was a win!

The audio was great, the narrators voice was perfect for this. I can’t wait for the next one to come out! Thank you Blackstone Publishing, Robert Swartwood, and NetGalley for allowing me access to the audio early. I also am so greatful for the gifted physical copy! Now I need to get a copy of The Killing Room for my shelf 😊

Wow, just wow! Enemy of the State, Book 2 in the Daniel Burke series about a rogue US government elite black ops team, is a high-octane, fast-paced, heart-pounding action thriller, just as good as The Killing Room. I read them back to back over the course of 3 days and it was one super-charged, propulsive ride.

With tense, high-action scenes, morally grey and some just plain evil characters, short chapters, and an exciting ending, I can definitely see both of these books as a movie/TV series. I’m not really a big action thriller reader but did these two books ever grab my attention from the first chapter and kept my interest throughout. Daniel Burke, the main character, is an intriguing, complex person and I’m really hoping there’s more to come in this series!

I 100% agree with my Thriller Book Lovers The Pulse team members in recommending Enemy of the State (and The Killing Room) to action thriller lovers!!

Thanks to the publisher for this complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
