EDIT May 5th re-reading **Be still my heart! I'd forgotten how darn good this story is. I am going to take my time and savor every word. Even the ones that are hard to digest. Just as good the second time around.
4.5 awe inspiring stars
This story blew me out of the ball park. It is like nothing I have ever read before, and I mean that in a very good way. It drew me in right from the beginning and didn't let me go until the very end. While some of the content was dark and bleak, I like to think of it as a story of ‘survival’, and what people are willing to sacrifice to keep the ones they love safe.
Ein was such an awesome character, I found myself emotionally drawn to her, feeling both her pain and joy throughout her entire journey .
The sex scenes were spicy and erotic, most had a D/s element to them. There were a few FF scenes, plenty of MF and some delicious MFFM scenes. If you are not a fan of FF loving please don't let that stop you from picking this story up, as it is about so very much more than that.
This is an epic, amazing, fantasy novel that manages to encompass and thoroughly explore themes like BDSM, motherhood, polyamory, and good versus evil. The hero is a heroine, and though she never picks up a sword, she is more a hero than a superhero ever could be.
If you love your fantasies deep and meaningful with a need for a box of kleenex as well as some incredible sex scenes, this is the book to grab. The closest I could come to for comparison would be the Kushiel's Dart series.
I wasn’t really sure how I was going to like a fantasy book written by Sorcha Black. I am so used to her writing the fun, loving, kinky Badass Brats that I was leery about how I was going to take to this story. Well, she blew me out of the water with her debut solo novel, “Ein”.
Ein, Ruel, Seraiya, Mag … unbelievable characters that are supported by amazing secondary characters that will blow your mind. This was an agonizing story about love, commitment, betrayal and the faith of one woman to bring good to the children and families that have been betrayed – the Dust People. The book is in a dystopian setting and is being listed as a fantasy … my opinion is that we need another genre – Erotic Fantasy and “Ein” would be the benchmark that we would set all others to.
I cannot tell you when the last time was that I read a book that I had to put down because I was crying. Ein, herself, comes through as a person with such strength of character and conviction, a love so strong for Ruel, Seraiya and her children, that you could feel her angst and love straight through to your bones. Her commitment to the Dust People and her sacrifices throughout the book only made her a stronger and more determined person. The relationships that Ein has with her children is one that we all strive to have with our own – love, honor and respect for them all. And, throughout the story, Seraiya brought humor and love, Ruel brought true love, Mag brought patience, but the relationship between the four of them transcends what the word “love” means.
I have not had the pleasure of reading such a powerful and entrancing book in a very long time. Sorcha Black brought life and eyes to an alternate world and lifestyle that will have you rethinking your own beliefs and feelings. I can honestly say that this is one of the most powerful, emotionally charged and superbly written books that I have read in a long time. Still, several hours after finishing, I feel a loss … I need to know where Ein, Ruel, Seraiya and Mag are bringing their relationship … how the children are faring and what the wonderful people of Hwell are doing now. Well done, Sorcha, I have no idea how you are going to follow this up with the second book in this trilogy but I am sure looking forward to it.
This was definitely different, and well done. I found it while looking for something FFM, and found much more than that. Presented as a sword and sorcery in a feudal world, but avoiding much of that, this story focuses on one strong woman, who loves another, who gets kidnapped, tortured, loved, lost, found again, and becomes mother to a pile of low-born children.
Oh and she really enjoys being tied up and spanked. There aren't many sex scenes, but they are intense and drawn out.
The world is well developed, though we only see a small corner of it - the bigger picture is unknown, but it doesn't matter. All politics is local. There is a smattering of magic, which plays a very small role. If you're looking for high fantasy, this isn't it.
I might drop a half-star for minor annoyances, but I won't.
Ein by Sorcha Black, is a book like no other I've read. It’s not what I would call a happy story, it’s a love story, but more than anything else it’s an inspiring story. If you reach the end of this book, and haven’t felt something, then you must not have the capacity to feel. If you don’t take a look of your own life, and realize how good you have it – look again. Ein is a powerful, soul grabbing, emotionally charged, brilliantly written book.
As a character, Ein had more humanity, caring and love for mankind then any real person I know, she was selfless, sacrificing, determined, non wavering in her goals, knowledgeable of her short comings, true to her faith, yet she never felt sorry for herself. As a mother, Ein put all others before herself, especially the children. Ein is an awesome character, she’s smart, caring, see’s the good even in the darkest of souls, visualizes the future, and wants to work towards that end. In my book she’s a true Superhero!
Ein, is surrounded by a strong cast of characters Ruel, Seraiya, Magnusin, & Gran to name a few. Their characters are well fleshed out, the chemistry between them, strong, and believable. The additional supporting cast is large, but not to the point that a score card is required to keep track of them. I didn't get the feeling that there were un-necessary characters, or plot threads left without resolution.
The book encompasses BDSM, & D/s elements, it has ménage scenes, which actually grow into a committed Poly lifestyle for the characters, and romance.. This is nothing like current run of BDSM books on the market today and in my opinion shouldn't even be considered a BDSM read. The sex scenes are hot & erotic, sometimes tender, sometimes brutal, without being extremely graphic in nature, but always supportive of the storyline.
Considering all that happens in this book, especially to Ein, the book has a happy ending, and I felt very positive about the characters futures.
I received this book from NetGalley for Belfry publishing for an honest review. The expected publication date is April 22, 2014. In my opinion I wish I had more than 5 stars to give this book, but since I don’t this was a GREAT 5 star read
I hope the future will bring more quality books like this from Ms Black, I'm very impressed with her solo book
It's totally lame for the editor to rate the book, but I just want to state that I really enjoyed working with Sorcha on this novel. It's not your run-of-the-mill fantasy because the heroine is not some ass-kicking warrior princess. In fact, she's a very ordinary mother who by doing right with others brings about great change. She's a mother, but she's also a sensual being, and it's rare to see both these roles expressed so beautifully in one character. Ein's love for all her children and her people is what makes this book.
This Dystopian Fantasy was absolutely amazing. It is set in a world where the caste you are born into determines exactly what you will be. There is little movement among castes and discrimination is rampant. A war is on and times are hard. There is a significant social movement stirring as this book begins. Our heroine, Einan ignites the flames that start a revolution. This is a story of love and justice, and it is a story of faith.
Einan comes from a lower middle class family. She is outspoken and a bit rough around the edges. Einan doesn't believe the "Dust", or lower class people should suffer. She speaks up on their behalf and is frequently put back in her place. She and her best friend, Seraiya, are room mates at boarding school. They know that they are there to be prepared for marriage, but they only have eyes for one another.
In the privacy of their room, they can be free to express their feelings.
As time draws to a close and Seraiya is about to be married, the girls must end their romance and move on. Einan only hopes that Seraiya can be happy in her new life.
But things go terribly wrong. Seraiya's father, who is in a political position, has done some unsavory things. When his past catches up to him, his only daughter is going to pay the price. When Einan is abducted and mistaken for Seraiya, she plays along. Her last wish is to save the life of her lover.
Einan is thrown into a dungeon and her captors begin to negotiate with her "father". But things don't go quite as they are supposed to. Einan ends up surviving, but she will bears the scars of her time in captivity for the rest of her life.
While captive, she falls for Ruel. He is her captor and he is supposed to be her torturer. When he discovers her secrets, he can no longer deny that he has feelings for her. He becomes her protector and her savior. When she is finally free, she learns that all that she has ever cared for is no more. She believes Ruel to be dead.
But the world is not done with Ein yet. She is taken in by a kind old "Dust" Grandmother. But her suffering is not done. Ein learns just how cruel the world can be.
This story is so dark and I found myself sucked in at this point wondering when this poor woman would catch a break. She is beaten down, but not broken. No matter what life throws her way, she keeps going. She becomes and advocate and a mother. She is the protector of those who can not stand up for themselves. And through it all, Einan discovers that she can love again.
This book leaves you feeling SO many things. Ein becomes a hero to the poor people in a war that shows no sign of ending anytime soon. When children begin to go missing, she goes looking for them and frees them. They are being sold off as slaves of all kinds.
This book was absolutely enthralling. It. Was. Epic. The Author writes BDSM books and while this book definitely had elements of erotica, it was so much more. Ein and Seraiya are lovers. Ein is the Domme in the relationship and Seraiya struggles to become intimate with her new husband when he is not dominant enough for her. But Ein also likes to be dominated. Both women prove to be bisexual and Ein is a switch.
Despite the dark tone of the book, it is still quite hopeful. Ein is visited by the spirit mother of her people. She is guided on a journey to save the children. Einan brings hope where it hasn't been any in quite some time. She becomes legendary and almost untouchable.
The whole book is written in first person from Einan's point of view. I would categorize this as a Dystopian Fantasy/ Erotica. There is a love story but it is not the primary element. The sex scenes are quite steamy and involves multiple partners. There are BDSM elements as well as some non-consensual sex. It is set in a time reminiscent of the Late Middle Ages. It is dark but compelling. I found it difficult to put down. Well done!
I would highly recommend this book to all of my friends.

This is quite a book to have as a solo author debut. I am an extremely avid reader as well as a writer. It takes an author with special talent to move me to tears more than once during a story. With Ein, this occurred several times as I imagined myself to be in her shoes- experiencing these heartfelt emotions, both good and bad. This character is a woman we can all relate to on some level. Whether it is as a mother, being in love, or as a struggling human being just trying to stay alive while making a difference in the lives of those she cares about.
The dystopian setting is well-matched with the alternative relationships of the characters. I applaud the author for giving it this spin. In the more desperate circumstances- perhaps even someone a bit uncomfortable with polyamory or bisexuality could open up enough to understand the plight of these people and see how much their choices made sense. To understand that love's only barriers are the ones you give it.
I adored Einan's (Ein as she's later called) relationship with her Sir, Ruel. The intensity of her loyalty to him gives us a peek into the beautiful side of submission. The one that is quite often missed in more boisterous or light-hearted erotica books, or that people who misunderstand the culture tend to glaze over. The way she relates to her lady Seraiya is utterly beautiful, and the open-mindedness with which the men in their lives accept their love for each other literally moved me to tears at one point. The thought that someone could love you in that deep of a way- that they would be willing to share you with your lifelong love in such a generous fashion...well that is the kind of selfless love and acceptance we all hope for deep down is it not?
Be advised there are ff, mff, and mmff love scenes and some bdsm type violence during sex and a little torture- but all of this is necessary and relevant to the character development and plot in my opinion. I just completed it last night and I am already chomping at the bit for the next book- that is how engrossed I am with this character. Read Ein- Sorcha Black will take you on a journey into the heart and mind of a strong, complex, and deeply loving woman you won't soon forget.
Sometimes a book surprises you. It grabs you and doesn't want to let you go. And it's a very special book when you don't really want it to let go either. When putting it down for the night, or at the end, you feel like you're stepping out of a world that you've just visited and it makes you feel as if you've lost something.
In a society where the caste system is very real, the strength of a single woman is powerful enough to make a difference. Ein is an amazing woman. She's not a book character, she comes to life. You share her highs and lows, her triumphs and her despair. She starts as a young woman, in love with her best friend and wondering where she's going to fit in the society and with Serai. Her kidnapping leads her to a true and deep connection with the most unlikely of men. She becomes a strong hero to a people who desperately need someone to believe in.
Ein and Serai's relationship, their love, is a palpable and powerful thing. With Ruel, there's a depth of connection and submission that was beautiful to read. You often read about collars, but I truly felt in this story, the meaning and emotions tied to a collar shined. It was one of my favorite aspects of the story, seeing how that collar was cherished.
Ultimately, for me, this was a love story. A mother's love for her children, those born to her and those that become hers in her heart. Children that she would do anything to love and protect. A love of self, where she was able to know her worth and do what she felt she needed to do. Love of people, sharing her strength with others and helping them become stronger. Romantic and erotic love, where the love and passion crossed lines and relationships, but that made it all the more powerful.
Congratulations Sorcha Black on an amazing debut solo novel.
I did serve as a beta reader for this story, however I did purchase the completed version upon it's release.
I received this book from Netgalley for my honest review.
I had great doubts about this book due to its content that is not what I usually like in my boks, but it had so much great ratings that I said to myself: why not try it? So I did.
Actually it was not that content (BDSM, ménage, etc.) that was a problem for me, though I didn’t enjoyed these parts, but I decided to accept them and not be judgmental.
It was the overall bleak message of the story that bothered me very much. It reminded me of the biblical Job – whatever Ein did something terrible happened to her. I was almost afraid to read because I continually imagined what other horror could fall on her shoulders.
At the same time I was also angry because she didn’t react but just suffered in silence. I thought that she was suffering from sacrifice syndrome – she feels that she must sacrifice herself over and over, but doesn’t allow others to sacrifice anything for her. She also doesn’t ask for help, but just meekly submits. I felt I wasn’t reasonable behavior.
Another thing that bothered me was that the worst of her sacrifices involved being sexually abused. I was horrible to read.
On the other hand the core message of the book, as I’ve perceived it, was a very positive one: peaceful rebellion against poverty and class subjugation. What Ein wanted to achieve was very positive: helping children and sheltering them from others’ cruelty.
So, for me this is a controversial book, thus the 3 star rating.
Ein starts with a sultry scene that immediately hooked me. The characters were believable right from the beginning. They had contrasting lives but common goals which made for a strong foundation. The plot became completely unpredictable after the second chapter. I knew from that point that I would adore this book.
Ein’s story goes from one extreme to the next, and her romance is not limited to one sex or the other. The creativity with which Sorcha Black writes the sexual encounters had me flipping several pages back just to reread them. It seems each scene was at least a couple pages long, and that in itself was a treat.
Most importantly, Ein had an amazing and intricate plot. The amount of thought Black put into the story shows through the details. Ein is a strong matriarchal character who uses her station in life for activism. Some of the situations in which she finds herself are really intense and may be too much for some readers, but lent to the realism of the story.
I was incredibly impressed by the story, the characters, and the romance. I would definitely recommend Ein to fellow romance readers.
I received a copy in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my review.
I really did enjoy this read, it was totally different from what I've read previously, and I really enjoyed it...even the girlie bits.
This book is about another time and another place, which threw me at times. I struggled with names and places, but could relate it to times gone by..Victorian era, and a very religious order. God is not God, but a lovely female called yole ( if I recall correctly). The book can be quite graffic in its detail of Ein's horrendous life, when she suffers at some hands of brutal men. She has a hard life, but all comes good in the end...she's a lovely girl who grows not by choice into a strong courageous lovely lady, who you would love to have as a mother. She's ultimately named the dust mother, and it's such a fitting name. She falls in love, looses love twice over, and regains love twice over.
It's a long story, and yet I never got bored once. Once I got into the book, I just couldn't put it down, till I got to the end. It has a HEA, which I was grateful for, after she suffered for so long. It's a well written book, which I could loose myself within. It has ménage, which is deliciously described and ff, spankings and mild BDSM, and a D/s relationship. All so nice and I would read again.
This was a great read. If this book doesn't touch your heart, then you don't have one. I loved the compassion. Also, it takes you to another place and time and makes you feel. The courage and depth of the main character, Einan, is inspirational and will make you love her as well as the other characters. I went through so many emotions while reading, ranging from happy, excited, sad, angry, and frustrated. The author did a great job building this world and making the reader really see it. The sex is hot and the couples are all great together. Some people might not like the m/f/f/m or f/f sex aspects but that's personal opinion. I like it, but if you don't like that sort of stuff you should still read the book, just skip the parts you don't like. It's still a great book, don't let your objections to a few parts stop you.
This book is unlike anything that I have ever read! I laughed, I cried, I felt so much while reading this story. All I wanted was for Ein to be happy. She is an amazing woman and the things that she does to help and protect the children as well as the dust people is astounding. There were a lot of ups and downs in this story and I am so happy that it ended on a good note! This world that Sorcha has created is unique. I fell in love with the secondary characters as well. The relationship dynamics are unusual but work in my opinion. I am very excited about more stories in this world!
m/f, f/f/m, f/f, m/f/f/m, bondage, spanking, flogging, and more
Engaging people, great story, some potential triggers so do heed Sorcha's warning in the blurb.
This is the first book in a proposed trilogy, but it is a complete story - the next book when it comes will be about different characters. No cliffhanger here.
Being idly good is easy. Acting on good – to do good – is more difficult.
First, I'd like to congratulate Sorcha Black on completing and publishing her first solo novel. One she has been working on for two years! and second, Mag is where it's at! mmm (PSA~Mag is not an elf. Gif used exclusively for hair porn) Mag is short for Magnusin how great is that?! He is Seraiya's husband. He is kind, patient, dominant, and totally crazy about his wife. He snuck up on me with his quite sexiness and I fell in love with him instantly! Some of the hottest scenes are with him after Ein and her lady love Seraiya are reunited. Yeah, sorry this is an erotic fantasy with bisexuality, polyamory, BDSM, dub-con. Basically, bookshelved/tagged OPENMINDEDNESS. It was the main selling point for me because the actual Fantasy in the book is not the type I normally read. There are no elves or dragons, no epic sword fights, and very little magic use. What it does have is Einan, Ein for short if you're Dust Dust is the lowest caste you can be in Ein's war torn world. The poorest of the poor. With trade routes cut off there's no work for people and very little food. Dust children are abandoned and forced to fend for themselves in the streets wearing rag shoes. Yeah, kinda bleak and depressing I know. But Ein is a heroine who will redefine "Kickass female character" for you. She ends up taking all the dust kids and makes them her own. Taking care and protecting them. The lengths she goes to do this are a little extreme for me and I had to put down the book and remind myself that Ein's religion is one of peace and non judgment so the idea of killing would be abhorrent to her. She takes that quote "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle" to the nth degree. It is her strength of character that makes her so powerful and gives this book it's complexity.
Also, Ein might have started a teeny tiny rebellion, but she didn't mean to. What else are you suppose to do when kids are being snatched away from their parents and sold? The sequel will be about Webb, one of Ein's daughters, but I really hope Sorcha might decide to write something about Orlo and Rahn. I fell in love with them too. They are the cutest couple:)
4,5 - 5 stars I was very apprehensive when deciding to even begin reading this book. The blurb and especially the information that there are non-con or dub-con situations mentioned there made me think whether I can deal with such situations. I'm very, very glad I finally decided to read it because it turned to be one hell of a book! Even the non-con situations were written in such a way I found them manageable. I liked the story, it was nothing I've read so far. I have to say there were some situations in the story that dragged a bit . I loved that Ein This was the first book from this author for me and I have to say it made me want to read other works by Sorcha Black.
When I first started this book I wasn't sure I could finish it seemed dark and f/f but as the story progresses it was amazing I completed it over the weekend. Ein was strong and it took alot of courage to fight the against all odds. You need to live in hope where she found the strength I would never know .
This book is not set in our world, although the issues are all too familiar. There are two concurrent stories here. One is about society. Einan, Ein, is mid-caste and she attends school with her best friend, Serai, who is high-caste. Serai's parents let orphaned Ein stay with them and one night, she is kidnapped by who think that she's the wealthy family's daughter. This eventually leads to Ein working to help homeless children, and the story examines the way the poor are treated. The second part of this story is about sexual mores. Different types of relationships are looked at, as is the difference between pain for pleasure, and pain delivered in cruelty. Einan and Serai have a loving relationship where Ein is dominant, by the end of the book, Ein is one of four people who share their bodies, and while still dominant over the other female, she submits to the men. The sexual activity here is moving and emotional. This was a brilliant, almost epic, tale, with tragedy and thrills, and an unpredictable ending. Wonderful.
That quote make me stunned. And when I saw the cover, if I'm not read the blurb first, I will never guess that Ein is a bdsm, with GLBT characters. I admit that GLBT theme make me uneasy and well, not my cup of tea, while menage never bothered me. But well, I decide to read this, because I'm so curious like a cat drawed by catnips and request this on NetGalley.
The first words make me go.. wow..
Seraiya- naked, bound to her bed- the silk hair ribbons tying her more securely than any coarse rope. Because she wanted to be there. To be mine
Okay, this sure get my attention. And so begin my journey with Einan, also known as Ein Dustmother. Told from the first POV, Ein is about Einan journey from her study at Servants at Peace, her struggle to keep her lover Seraiya to marry to another man than mistakenly kidnapped by her abductor. This, when she meet Ruel, her Sir, a man who taught her that pain is a pleasure and awake her submissive side (she always be dominant with Seraiya).
Yet, destiny can be so cruel for Ruel died when defend Einan and Einan wake up to find that she heavily pregnant with Ruel's child. Fortunately she have Gran who saved her and Bael, a child who later become her own child and inspired her to take poor child who are Dust. Dust are the lower caste in Guthia, a place Einan lived. Another obstacle then throw to Einan when she find that she must trade her body to a cruel man to save her children. But then, Ein never give up. And like the quote of the cover of this book, in the end Ein and her beloved folks become heroes. Without swords.
If we put aside the GLBT theme and BDSM (yes, this book is so heavy on BDSM), what happen in Ein is very much happen in our world. Human trafficking, child molestation, women who whored herself because they don't have choice to save their dear ones. Ein almost bring me tears, for I feel that life was so cruel to her. Ein is not a damsel in distress, yet when she tortured out of her will I hope that Ruel will finally alive and help Ein again. I will not spoil this, but well, in the end Ein have her own HEA. With her lovers of course.
Sometimes I think Ein can be too forgiving and blaming herself over and over, especially when she make a drastic decision and did something horrible. She also considered herself as a whore and I want to shake her that what she did was necessary. She just.. I don't know if people like Ein exist anymore. I'm stunned to see her kindness, her determine to help people and her strong will.
I know that some people will feel uncomfortable when reading Ein because the BDSM content,same-sex relationship between Ein and Seraiya, and how Seraiya's husband Magnusin do not bother to share his wife with Ein. Their lovemaking make me blush and fanning myself. But also show two side of Ein, her become dominant and submissive when it comes to Ruel as her Sir. I think this matter addresed beautifully and make sense. But I have a little bit complain. I feel that Seraiya somehow too childish, and well she have so many blessing and love, either its from Ein or her husband Magnusin. While Ein was so tortured :(.
Because Ein is so much a fantasy book (with a hint of dystopia), I always paid attention to the world building and the history. So basically there are 2 country at wars, Cedesian and Guthian. Cedesian folks are cruel but their people also intermarried with Guthian people. Cedesian also can wield magic, show by Web, one of Einan's foster children (Einan have like 20 children, 2 are her own children, the rest are dust children that left by their parents). Ein and so many people in Guthian worship Yoel, a Goddess of Peace, and sometimes Ein think that the Goddess speak to her. The fantasy and magic part just a little, becaue Ms Black concern to the humanity aspect, but it still make the story rich.
So, if you are open-minded enough and not easily disturbed with erotica and violence content of Ein, I suggest to read this book. Well, I think everyone must read Ein, for some part of this book is very much connected with our world, and you can skip the erotic part.
...sometimes you have to stop taking care of other people and take care of yourself so you have more to give everyone later
Thanks for NetGalley and the author to provide the copy for honest review
Such a wonderful read. I love it when a book draws me in on page one. One of those great reads that transports you to another time and place. I love it when an author can give me that escape and I lose track of time. The relationship between Einan and Seraiya is sweet and fun and I love the intensity between Einan and Sir. This books shows you the many forms love can take and as long as it works for all the parties involved that is all that matters. Be warned, this book does have some steamy sex scenes, ff, mff, and mmff and plenty of kink. I admit I couldn’t put it down, read most of the night but it was so worth it. Looking forward to more!!!! Was so happy to receive a copy from the author now when can I expect more……
The world building was phenomenal. The story is both equal parts fantasy and erotica, so know that going in. The world that was built, the hardships that Ein had to go through made me crying ever few chapters, but the ending was very satisfying. I especially loved how the author wrote the secondary characters and the sexuality within the world. Love and peace were the main messages of the book. I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys genres such as a good fantasy, erotica, and social justice (I know that sounds weird to me too, but trust me, it's good).
If you're looking for happy kinky, slap and tickle this book is not for you. I knew before reading this it would be an emotional rollercoaster that's why I put off reading it until I was in a good headspace and could handle the extra emotions. I wasn't disappointed. Ein was amazing. I enjoyed reading it, wanted to throw it across the room, and wished it were a hard copy so the pages could absorb my tears. It is a favorite and I will end up rereading Ein a few times.
Absolutely loved this book!!! She always kept you guessing as to what was going to happen next. So you would want to keep reading to find out. Beware this is an emotional roller coaster type of book, but well worth it. Best part of this book is to learn about where the Queen is from and how she wraps up this book. Definitely would suggest this to anyone that like dark erotic books to read this.
Emotional story with a heroine who touches your heart.
I don't normally read fantasy books, but for some reason I decided to try this one. The story of Ein grips you from the start. Her life is filled with pain and sorry, but her strength and love for the children and families that are suffering is immeasurable. She is thrown into situations where she has to decide between saving herself and protecting others, and of course she always chooses others over herself. She quickly becomes that person who grabs your heart. The story shows what one person who never gives up and never gives in can accomplish. Her relationship and love for Serai, Ruel and Mag was beautiful and powerful. Her love and devotion to her children, those she birthed and those who became hers because of her love and compassion, was unstoppable. A true love story with all the good and all the bad. The setting, violence and sexual situations may not be for some readers, but was truly what pulled this story together for me. It made it raw, emotional, showed true devotion and character, and the ability to love everyone as human beings. A lesson that society has seemed to forget these days where everything seems to be "me, me, me"!
It was okay. The relationship between the four characters in the relationship is good (though admittedly not exactly my cup of tea), and so is the wider cast of characters; writing characters is definitely a strength of the author's.
The book did seem to drag on and on at a few points, part of which is just that it spans several years. And it could have used another pass by an editor, not so much for grammar/spelling, but there are a few continuity things and clarity (at one point it says a character is talking to two people at once, and obviously conversations within groups happen all the time, but the way it was written made it sound like that character was talking one-on-one with someone and simultaneously talking one-on-one with someone else; there were a couple points like that, where the writing was unclear).
