Gave this a high 4⭐️. Paullett Golden is one of my favorite authors and she wrote a clean heartfelt romance about two very different people in this one. Alistair was half Persian and Isobel was a daydreamer/author. She spent most of her days writing to her heart’s content while writing gothic novels. Besides having a slow burn romance thus also had a mystery. Something was happening at night and it feels like ghosts walking the halls! Overall I enjoyed it and loved seeing how together this couple brought out the best in each other.
I purchased this novel and definitely recommend this.

A Spark of Romance, the newest novel from Paullett, oozes nods to Ann Radcliffe and Jane Austen's gothic literature. But Paullett emerges with a distinct and strong voice and is not overshadowed. And as in Paullett's previous works, steller writing.

A Spark of Romance is the tale of Isobel, a writer with an overactive imagination, and Alistar, a man seeking to forge his way in life with Isobel by his side. At the heart of this novel is a love tale, but this story has a little bit for everyone (courting, hauntings, and mystery). I especially enjoyed the story within a story with Isobel's chivalric romance writings!

Thank you again Paullett, for the opportunity to be an advanced reader, albeit not finishing in time before publication!

A Spark of Romance. My fellow romance. I am normally a huge fan of this writers books and I still am. I recently read and reviewed this book and I found my self stuck on the fence on so many things in regards to to book. I guess the first question would be, did I enjoy the book?
Yes, but not in my usual Heck yeah. This book was awesome!
I know and understand that this book version is different from her previous books. It’s on the clean side, which I am perfectly fine with, but I feel that too much of something was there or the two worlds did not connect in certain common sense. I understand in todays world about diversity, but back then truly these two worlds collided? I’m being truthful here, but Alistair home language really Deterred me from the book the further that I continued with the book. I truly tried to connect with his and Isobel’s relationship, but I spent more time on interpreting what the poor chap meant.
The story is also a very slow pace. I was looking for the excitement and engaging action that our main characters would find themselves involved in early the story. Adding the three young brothers did bring some colorful light to the story. I appreciate that the writer did write the heroine’s age range in over the age of twenty- four. As I said before this writer usually drops some brilliant, and phenomenal books.
I will continue to read her books. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!

"A Spark of Romance" is the third installment of Golden's Romantic Encounters series. Isobel is a shy but sweet Gothic writer, a dreamer who is often wrapped up in her next story idea. Alistair is a handsome and charming gentleman from India, who works for the East India Company. Originally betrothed to Isobel's friend Leila, Alistair calls off their engagement when he realizes that Leila is not a good match for him. Aside from the fact that he's fallen quite hard for Isobel, who happens to be staying at Leila's family home during his visit. Thus Isobel and Alistair begin their open yet not so open courtship while Isobel's mother is away, with Alistair trying his best to follow English traditions while throwing in his Persian customs as well. The pair grow closer the more time they spend together and Alistair is especially fond of Isobel's writing. Later, Alistair invites Isobel and their friends to his father's house in Reading. Alistair hopes to come to an agreement with his father about Alistair's future, despite their strained relationship. Meanwhile, Isobel comes across a locked door mystery at the estate, which will keep readers at the edge of their seat. Isobel and Alistair are an entertaining pair, their interactions and playful banter are endearing. Historical romance fans enjoy this lighthearted story with its dash of mystery. Fans of Golden's work are in for a treat.

I had the pleasure of beta reading this gem for the incredible Paullett Golden whose talent I am I'm complete awe of.
I originally started reading Golden's work when it was a much higher steam level (which she excelled at, by the way) and was unsure if I would like the change to more closed door romance. But to be honest I think I am even more impressed than I was before. And now she's stepped out yet again, moving in the more gothic romance direction, and I'm debating begging her to do more of this style of book. The Northanger Abbey vibes are strong with this one.
This is very much the story of Isobel and Alistair's courtship and its various struggles. We learn about both their families, and meeting Alistair's father is where the mysteries begin. I don't want to give too much away, but this book has all the beautiful things we know and love from a Golden romance: elegant prose, with characters that leap off the page and are deep and complex, and such a detailed setting you can't help but become immersed.
Building tension in a romantic setting is not easy to do, but building tension with some scary elements as well? And having them stand apart from each other? That, my friends, is masterful, and part of what sets Paullett apart from all the other regency writers out there. These books are SO much more. I have loved them all, but I think I love this one just this much more.

A Spark of Romance is an enjoyable read that is light and airy with mysterious undertones that bring this story to life. The author has done a remarkable job of setting the 1796 scene, where propriety is a must and Societal expectations are high. This book is a must-read for those looking for a little escape, with a healthy dose of romance, mystery, and adventure.

Isobel and Alistair are the protagonists. Isobel is a writer with a fantastical imagination where the dullest moments can become the most daring encounters. Alistair is an honourable gentleman who finds himself hopelessly taken by Isobel. Their characters are very well-written, and the two make for a sweet read and a charming story. While written well as a lady of the eighteenth century, Isobel also seemed ahead of her time, but appropriately so. Her vivid imagination made for some entertaining sequences, and her outlook on other people made this a fun read.

If you're looking for a light-hearted read, I definitely recommend this book. From the get-go, you are sucked into the past and taken on an adventure. A very enjoyable read.

A Spark of Romance is a lovely historical romance set in 18th-century England, following the smart and independent Isobel Lambeth and the charming Alistair Trowbridge. Isobel is a writer, struggles to balance her creative passions with the expectations of the society in this era, while Alistair is a devotional and charming Hero, who wins her heart.

Isobel and Alistar's story is sweet, full of heartfelt moments, with occasional misunderstanding. Alistar is Persian by heritage, so we get some cultural differences as well.

The plot is very low on drama, it remains steady without bigger plot twists, but still keeps fresh and entertaining through humor and banter between Isobel and Alistar.

If you enjoy historical romances sweet, charaming, heartfelt yet witty, this might be your favorite pick.

Last but not least, big thanks to Paullett Golden and Booktasters for providing me with this wonderful book. 😍

Have you ever desired to read a book that gives you Jane Eyre vibes, but also makes you laugh at times?

If you answered yes, then Spark of Romance is the book you’re looking for!

I really enjoyed Isobel and Alistair’s story. The peeks that the reader got to have into Isobel’s mind and imagination were exciting. And Alistair was a perfect gentleman.

The mystery and the romance drew you in. I just wish there were a few more kisses 🤭

Once the climax of the mystery came Paulett did a great job keeping the reader engaged until the resolution. Which ended in a positive light, and all lived happily ever after!

This book also contains several shorts at the end, which were also enjoyable to read!

I think more than the book I’ve enjoyed getting to know Paulett over Instagram! There’s nothing like a fellow Jane Eyre lover!

Another great installment in this series! I believe Isobel would be my best friend in this little quaint village world that Golden has created. I really love seeing old characters and meeting new ones and getting to know the main characters more.

Isobel and Alistair are seriously the sweetest. Isobel's imagination runs away from her and I love it. The stories she makes up while the world spins around her are entertaining. The creative solutions she comes up with for her hero Alistair would be much more interesting than the practical ideas that actually get her out of her funny scenarios.

There are some gothic/suspenseful themes that had me freaking out a little bit, as I am NOT a suspense reader, but there turned out to be logical explanations and funny antics along the way. This is also squeaky clean, with just one sweet kiss!

Flights of Fancy ? . . .

The story focuses on Isobel Lambeth, an author who seems to let her mind go off on its own as the imagination kicks in, and Alistair Trowbridge, our British-Persian hero who courts the lady with touches of his own traditional customs intermingled. He seems perfect for her, as he is patient when her mind flies away to follow her imagination, and he is delighted to read what she writes about. Will she take us along on her adventure? Is it still imaginary, or something else this time?

Brilliant and imaginative with a delicious gothic flare. When secrets lurk in the shadows and a writer is the mystery solver, you just know that you're in for an entertaining and suspenseful tale. What's more intriguing than a dark and stormy night and even a new house in which to make discoveries!? Ms. Golden has just given us a treasure.

Our hero is swoony and such a cinnamon roll. I loved the honor he held closely to. His heart is torn in a few different directions, and yet it's his lady love that reigns foremost in his hopes and dreams. I adored that he wasn't the typical English gentleman.

This Regency Romance had interconnecting characters and an epilogue that touched my heart. This is a standalone series, but why miss out on the first two books!? If wholesome romance is where your heart rests, don't let this beautiful book escape you.

Oh, I loved so much about this book! The continued saga of the ladies writing club , the handsome and suave Alistair, the highly imaginative Isobel. A gothic mystery, a locked door. It was not a 5 star read for me because it rambled. I do love a good epilogue, as well!!
However, I could not have been happier with the charming vignettes in the second half of the book.
Third book in this series. I wish they came out faster. I received an advance copy of this book at no charge from BookSirens and the author, but all opinions are my own.

I loved this story of Isobel and Alistair. PAULLETT GOLDEN has a unique way of spinning this tale. I was amazed at all the inner turmoils each character having their own to deal with. All the while trying to develop relationships. The tug of war style keeps you rooted into the story. I fell in love with the characters.
The story of loss and love not just of romance but of family. I highly recommend this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed every hour spent reading this book, as it was a delight to read. The characters had me laughing out loud and the mystery kept me on the edge of my seat.

This historical romance novel opens by giving us a glimpse into the life of our endearing heroine, Isobel. She is a writer who is somewhat absent-minded, often “away with the fairies,” as she says. Suddenly, she realizes she’s late for her clandestine not-a-date with Alistair, her amorous not-beau. He can’t court her until he meets her mother, after all. Still, he does everything he can to show his feelings while respecting her English customs.

Soon, Isobel, Alistair and their friends find themselves on a journey to his distant father’s house in Reading. Here, Alistair attempts to repair his relationship with his father and Isobel uncovers a mystery, which must be solved before the gentlemen return from London. Will they succeed in their respective missions?

Paulett’s attention to detail gives the book verisimilitude (the appearance of being true or real. Isobel’s friend taught me that word) and brings the scenes to life. She makes you feel like you’re in the room with the characters. Her extensive vocabulary and choice of words highlight her skills as an author. That said, she doesn’t force you to consult a dictionary in order to understand what’s going on. But if you do, it will enrich the scenes and you’ll learn something, too. I also loved Alistair’s use of Persian endearments and honorifics. They lent a beautiful taste of culture to the story.

As characters go, Ms. Golden developed them very well. Each had their own personalities, distinct from the others. We were also able to see Alistair and Isobel’s romance deepen and become more meaningful over their time spent in Reading. Alistair is a hopeless, smug, slightly scandalous flirt and I adore him. Isobel is sweet and brave and I get the vibe that she’s somewhat innocent. She welcomes us into her world of daydreams and fantasies and it’s always a fun place to be.

Truthfully, the only weaknesses I saw were a matter of personal taste. I struggle with “insta-love” in any story. It’s hard for me to suspend disbelief in professions of love and marriage within two weeks of knowing a person—the infatuation stage. However, Isobel’s head still remained firmly on her shoulders and I appreciated that, as well as Alistair’s explanation of exactly why he fell “in love” with her so soon. These things, combined with the fact that courtships and engagements were short during that period of history, helped me to realize their relationship and I did become fully invested. The other mild annoyance was Alistair’s super sweet, over the top terms of endearment, such as calling her his delicate flower or rose petal.

Will I read it again? Definitely, despite knowing how the mystery ends. I’d love to go back and spend more time with Alistair, Isobel and their friends.

This novel is in the same vein as Northanger Abbey in its satirical take on gothic novels. This makes it lean more towards the domestic and novel of sensibility than the true gothic. It is a novel of emotion and romance rather than horror. There are some impressive references to The Castle of Woifenbach, Vathek, Caleb Williams and of course Ann Radcliffe’s Sicilian Romance and The Mysteries of Udolpho. The explained supernatural is in keeping with Radcliffe and there is also a hint of the madwoman in the attic. The heroine is isolated and alone with absent parents and in need of a male protector, as was custom in the eighteenth century.

Isobel as the heroine feels silly and immature. Women were not well educated, but she appears young and impressionable along the lines of Lydia in Pride and Prejudice but I suspect she is meant to be a lot older, as she is over the age of consent to be married. She portrays the awe and wonder of a child when she visits Reading and the bookstores. When she meets a lady in distress she shows compassion, but all these are surface characteristics with no real trauma to bring out psychological depth. It is good that she is a nobleman’s daughter which would be in keeping with the rise of the middle class and Alistair is the ‘other’ exotic element who seeks to integrate into British society. Again, we are told he is of mixed heritage and it would have been good to have some flashbacks to the time he was with his mother expressing his anguish and hardship. We are told he has difficulty relating to and reconciling with his father, but it would have been nice to feel that tension. There is a slight pull between Persian and British culture and it would have been nice to see him come down on one side or the other, either emphasise the exotic or go out of his way to create the persona of an English gentleman despite his appearance.

The author has taken great care to include many of the elements of an eighteenth-century gothic novel but has neglected the story. What does the heroine learn? Where is the progression of character? What is the conflict and driving force? Where are the opposing characters? It was nice to see Alistair and his father reconciled and the requisite happy ending, but it would have been good to see more of the conflict shown. The reader needs more of a reason to want to care about these characters. I’m afraid we are not up to Jane Austen’s standards yet.

The truth is, I don’t think I can be completely objective about A Spark of Romance. Paullett is a dear friend of mine, and I’m such a big fan of everything she does. It was my absolute pleasure to get a behind-the-scenes look at her book before it was even released. Like how cool is that?
Starting with historical accuracy, A Spark of Romance gets a star. One of the things I love about Paullett’s books is how I feel immersed in the Georgian Era. Paullett brings this time period to life, and if that isn’t one of the best things about historical fiction, I don’t know what it.
Paullett also shares fun facts about this time period on her Instagram and Facebook.
A Spark of Romance gets another star for characters! I absolutely loved the characters in this book.
Especially, Isobel! As a writer, I felt so connected to her character. I honestly love it when writers are characters, and I wish there were more stories just like A Spark of Romance!
Alistair was one of the best parts of this book. He was funny and charming, and I absolutely adored how he loved Isobel.
The romance between these two was so sweet! I think I got a cavity from reading it!
So, I’ll be honest, I can’t give A Spark of Romance a star for enjoyability, but that’s not because I didn’t enjoy reading it. I had a little too much going on while I was reading this book, and I had a hard time focusing and just reading for the joy of it.
But this book does get a star for language. I love Paullett’s use of vocabulary, and one of my favorite things is looking up words!
And finally, A Spark of Romance gets a star for grammar. I was reading a rough draft of this novel, and I was really impressed by how well-written it was, even before it was finished and released.
It’s my pleasure to give A Spark of Romance four stars. I am planning on purchasing the finished version and reading it again, and I’m sure I’ll be able to award it five stars the next time around. The only reason I’m not giving it five stars this time is because my circumstances while reading this book were not ideal, but that’s on me, not the book.
If you haven’t read anything by Paullett, you’re missing out. She is not only one of my best writing friends, but her romances are truly wonderful. If you would like to learn more about Paullett and her books, read my interview with Paullett at somebodytopen.com.

👻A Spark of Romance👻 by #PaullettGolden is a quirky and mysterious Victorian Era romance that is just a treat to read.

** I would like to express my thanks to ☆ Paullett Golden ☆ for providing me this ARC in exchange for an honest review **

Though these characters were introduced in Golden’s previous story, this story can be read as a standalone. We follow both Isobel and Alistair’s love story as they fight through a variety of obstacles just to court each other, and even to just find the support to follow their dreams. Both of them following strict social norms, so reputations aren’t damaged, worrying over big decisions like on what to do in order not to lose support of their friends and families, and finding the true meaning and greater purpose of their life.

While reading I think the author did a really good job in creating a spooky atmosphere, I felt my heart race from the looming danger in various parts of the novel. There were so many parts of this novel that I just laughed out loud because of the author’s genius writing, and I just loved the dynamics between the characters that made this book quite heartwarming in many places.

I think the characters of this novel are super loveable. Alistair going the extra mile to be vulnerable and have deep conversations with Isobel. Alistair’s attentiveness to Isobel was to die for, and Alistair’s courage in finding his own path and making his own way is superrrrr admirable. Isobel was also a favorite of mine with her constant daydreams and imagination (being something that I relate to), her open mindedness to different cultures, her dedication to finding the truth, and her dedication to friends and family. There was action and adventure, but there were also dark secrets.

I recommend this book to anyone who loves historical romance and wants a quirky romance novel to make their day!

A Spark of Romance is the third book of the Romantic Encounters series by Paullett Golden. This is a history romance set in regency England. The combination of sweetness and comedy, combined with elements of gothic romances made this clean (behind doors romance) a totally charming read.

Golden has a pretty good set of with her books - there is the main book, which is most of the page count. Then there are a number of short stories following the book, which may or may not be related to the main story, but the themes are all very similar. They are sweet little vignettes that are pretty enjoyable.

The main story follows Isobel Lambeth, she is a gentleman's daughter who has dreams of being a gothic romance novelist. She's a day dreamer and always is dreaming up what she will next write in her book. Alistair Trowbridge bursts into her life and a subtle and sweet courtship begins.

Alistair Trowbridge wants a change in his life. He grew up in India, his father like himself was a man of the East India Company. His mother was Persian and his father from a wealthy English family. Now he is in England and must decide what he wants to do next with his life. Arriving with his friend and mentor, he was originally going to be matched to one lady, but finds himself enchanted with another.

Totally, totally charming book. I loved the rom-com aspects, with many little amusing events and words exchanged, it kept the story light and well paced. Alistair is a swoon worthy hero and Isobel's romantic outlook seem both charming but not in any way naive.

What a delightful surprise. I didn’t realize that this was an anthology, so I will review the main story and leave the twelve “flash fiction” pieces as a bonus for you to discover. Alistair, his father Alexander, and Josiah Owen all worked for the East India Tea Company. Alexander and Josiah had arranged for Alistair to marry Josiah’s daughter Leila, but when Alistair arrived from India and spent time with her, he realized that they would not suit. However, Leila’s friend Isobel, who had been visiting with the Owen family, did catch his eye and his heart. There is a lot going on in this story. There is the estranged relationship between Alexander and Alistair; Alistair’s career choice; a midnight mystery; the Ladies Literary Society, and imaginative interludes. You will also find a few historical flashes and insight into the power and influence of the East India Tea Company. Alistair and Isobel are wonderful characters. He is a man of good character and so desperately wants to be Isobel’s hero. He is patient, protective, accepting and not afraid to be vulnerable. Isobel, an author of gothic novels, often goes off into a flight of fancy imagining dramatic scenes with lots of swashbuckling action. She has an innocence and genuineness that is just endearing, and her overactive imagination provides levity. There are some intense moments when father and son clash, and a few terrifying ones when Isobel confronts a ghost, but this story is original, entertaining and emotionally satisfying!.

A Spark of Romance is a pleasant historic novel of the love story of two very different people, Isobel and Alistair, with a touch of the gothic flare.

Isobel is a fantasist with a vivid imagination who writes short stories for a local paper, staying at Leila’s family home. Alistair, is a British-Persian wealthy nobleman working for his father’s empire, and is betrothed to Leila.

Alistair visits Leila’s home, when he meets Isobel on a chance encounter and a spark of romance is ignited between them, making him call off the engagement to Leila and rethink his occupation.
Alistair and Isobel find themselves spellbound on a secret courtship as Isobel’s mother is away and Alistair must meet his father for the first time, to announce his retirement from the company. Alistair invites Isobel on his trip to meet his father, a man who he knows little about.

Isobel is spiralled into an emotional turmoil when she discovers that one of the doors located near her room is permanently locked and starts hearing sounds in a supposedly empty floor, to later discover a mysterious figure lurking in the dark.

Will their love bring the best out of each other, embracing each other’s cultures, whilst learning a dark secret which will stir the peace of Trowbridge household?

A Spark of Romance is an enjoyable read, with the added bonus of a collection of short stories.

Oh, the wonders of fresh love! In this magnificent tale of wooing, a man finds himself in love with someone who was not originally meant to be his betrothed. However, the woman he was supposed to marry has chosen a different suiter, and so Alistair, instead, finds himself smitten with Isobel, a writer with a wild imagination.

Reading this book was like being a peeping Tom into the romantic gestures between this growing love affair. We learn the ins and outs of falling in love in historical England, all while reading the tales being written by the creative Isobel.

Unfortunately, the whims of this love cause some issues in Alistair's life (mainly with his father) -- but will true love win out? And the other most important question -- is Isobel so engrossed in her writing of gothic novels that she keeps thinking she's hearing voices, or is there something more to it? Oh, this book is such a wonderful read. If you love romance, gothic novels, and, perchance, you too are a writer, you'll swoon over these pages!

An Entertaining and Suspenseful Romance Story

I found A Spark of Romance by Paullett Golden very entertaining. The author successfully balanced fun mystery, humor, romance, and tradition in the plot making the story relatable and interesting. I liked how Paullett professionally aligned character development.

I enjoyed reading this book beyond my expectations. The love story and mystery between the main characters, Alistair and Isobel captivated me. Their affection was thrilling and impressive and kept me hooked on eager to uncover the mystery. I also loved how Alistair was immersed in Isobel’s story, showing genuine support and connection.

What's more, Golden's use of a conversational tone made the story more lively. I felt like I was interacting with the characters and at times I laughed out loud. I would definitely reread the book.

I recommend this book to everyone who loves romance fiction and mystery stories.

Soft Romance for a gentle read

A spark of Romance is a well written light hearted read.
Paullett Golden does a wonderful job of setting the scene for the late 1700's building the world wonderfully, truelly letting you feel the system that surrounds the main characters.
At first I was not a fan of the female lead Isobel as she came across immature and it felt a little frustrating at times but trying to take into account when it is set, ina time where women were not so well educated or worldly, I tried to cut her some slack.
The contrast between her and Alistair gave the story some depth which was good.
A happy ending is always appreciated but honestly I hadn't developed a deep enough connection with the characters to truely appreciate it.
The short stories were a nice addition. A few quick reads to change things up was actually very nice and feels like you're getting a little more.

This is the third book in the Romantic Encounters series. It consists of a historical romance novel and a selection of short stories.

Initially, I was expecting this to be quite spicy, but it was a closed-door romance. In some ways, I think that added to the fun. I felt as though I was being teased by the author, waiting for a specific moment, and I enjoyed that anticipation. Sometimes, when reading romance, I think it's the suggestions that are satisfying, and the feeling of just knowing that a connection exists, between two characters. The chemistry is enough. I did find the main story a lot of fun to read.

The short stories were enjoyable too. In fact, reading this was a little bit like enjoying the main course in a meal, then sampling a few tasty desserts afterwards.

If you are a historical romance reader, and you like your romance sweet but not too spicy, this may be for you.

I loved Isobel's character and how sometimes she is absent-minded as she is busy plotting out her next scene in her book. And who doesn't enjoy a little mystery as well? I tried so hard to discover the mystery of the locked door before we were told and almost had it right. I felt so bad for the woman! But, I'm so glad Isobel didn't give up.
Alistar's character was too cute! I'm not familiar with Persian ways and language but it was cute how he wanted to do everything right when it came to courting Isobel and enjoying her work, eager to read her work. I love that they would read the same book and discuss it. I would find myself holding my breath whenever he and his father would have "discussions," hoping that they could reach an agreement on what Alistar could do with his life.
This was my first book of Paullett Golden's and I look forward to reading more.

A Spark of Romance is an enjoyable read with mysterious undertones that bring this story to life. The author includes many of the elements of an eighteenth-century gothic novel. I liked all the callouts to the various novels available at the time. Isobel's vivid imagination made for some entertaining and interesting scenes in the book. The ending tied everything together so perfectly, leaving me feeling satisfied and fulfilled. I enjoyed the glimpse of the characters from the other books. The story did feel a bit long. Overall an enjoyable story.

The flash fiction stories were a nice addition. The quick reads were actually very nice and made it feel like you're getting a little more. I really liked the little "drawings" at the beginning of each story.

I've read a number of books by this author and have enjoyed them all and this one also did not disappoint. The story was well-written with a romance that was magical and with

undertones of mystery throughout. I was pulled into the story from the start and remained captivated till the end. The characters were well-developed and interesting and had sparkling chemistry that was evident in every interaction. Isobel is a shy writer with an active imagination, and her stories could turn any dull moment into a great adventure. Alistair is completely taken by her and is the perfect gentleman. The story was a bit more gothic than I normally read, but very well crafted. If your looking for escape into romance and adventure, then this is not to be missed!
