Epic romance, two heroes at a time! My story universe features warriors and blacksmiths, rescue swimmers and hockey players, treasure hunters and time travelers, and quite a few shifters. My favorite kind of hero: a grumpy f*cker who’ll do anything for the man he loves.

So, you know how I said in the review for the last one that I couldn't connect to the characters or the story? Yeah, that was very much NOT the case here. I was hooked from the first chapter...

There's just something about an age-gap (that doesn't have a maturity gap) romance that appeals to me. Also, I love it when the sexy younger guy pursues the older man. Throw in a well-crafted shifter story-line - that adds some drama later in the book - and I'm in heaven. Add to that the older guy is also a bit overweight and hella self-conscious about it...while the hot one revels in that padding, absolutely loves it? *swooooooon*

Plus, OMG the sex scenes - while infrequent - were hot. I loved how Thierry pulled out all the stops to "court" Dmitri...but wasn't annoying or invasive about it. Didn't get on my nerves the way some stories have their younger MCs go about worming their way into someone else's heart (or bed). In this tale, we get a sense that it's real, this yearning, this desire Thierry has for Dmitri. That he's invested. Well, until . *swooonX2*

I also have to mention that I really liked the added touch of having Dmitri be a frustrated novelist. All of his joy and complaints about writing & its process? Well, combined with the small detail that the character flailing about in the stalled-out book sort of embodied him...that was hella meta IMHO. Nice touch, Mia. (Also, massive props for having the character point out that writers write; that it's work...that it takes effort and - unlike being a wolf shifter - isn't magic; it doesn't depend on the presence of a "muse" most of the time. Sure, it/they can be inspiration but without making time to do the work, without making a concerted effort to set aside time to do the thing...it's not gonna just happen. Love that, too.)

As I said, I didn't really dislike the first book, but it wasn't as engaging as this one. Unless you are a completist and feel the need to read every story in a series, well...this one definitely stands alone. It mentions the two MCs from the previous installment but they are not integral to the plot nor do they feature much. The setting is painted very well here and you don't have to know about those guys to enjoy the hell out of this one.

Plus, it was free at the 'Zon. Another great find.

Now, to go put this title on at least two Listopia lists...

In this second story of the Grizzly Rim series (easily read as a standalone), two wolf shifters connect – first with altercations on the ice but soon enough with their hearts and souls. Dmitri is a writer looking for inspiration, his existence in northern Alaska consisting of visits with friends at the local bar, amateur hockey with the local team and the occasional one night stand to warm his increasingly lonely bed. When younger wolf Thierry gets in his face at a local game and then makes it clear he’s not going to go away so easily, Dmitri is hard pressed to understand what Thierry’s interest in him could possibly be, no matter that Thierry insists his dreams have led him to Alaska and Dmitri in particular. They are a mismatched pair – older cynical Dmitri and younger confused Thierry. But one thing’s for certain – the attraction between them is not going to go away and might just lead them to a happy ever after.

I really enjoyed this story. I loved the first one in the series (Launch The Hunt, which featured an eagle shifter, a first for me). This one has the more standard paranormal wolf shifter main characters but with a bit of a sports romance thrown into the mix, as Thierry and Dmitri meet on the ice and Thierry is a well known figure in the hockey world. There are several hockey scenes that are easy to visualize. At the same time, with both being wolf shifters, parts of the story are shown in wolf form and parts in human form with excellent worldbuilding and a northern setting that is picturesque and isolated, perfect for the animal shifters who make their home there.

Dmitri’s character comes across well as a single guy in his forties, good looking (though not as slim as he used to be), quiet but friendly, and currently frustrated with his writer’s block. The last thing he needs is some young pup getting in his face. Thierry definitely has the energy and attitude of a late twenty-something man, confused by his need to go west and find the man who keeps showing up in his dreams. Now that he’s found him, he’s not quite sure what to do about it, except that the chemistry between them is too good to dismiss. As a result, they share some steamy scenes together but are quick to both realize that there is something deeper developing between them. Thierry’s Quebecois nature comes through clearly and I loved the french bits thrown in here and there which made his character feel very authentic. There are several secondary characters in the story and some surprising family revelations that Thierry must deal with while he sorts out whether staying with Dmitri is what he wants to do. I really liked the banter between Dmitri and his friends and the bar scenes with them give some hints about upcoming stories for other characters (all of which I’m looking forward to). It was a fast-paced and enjoyable read. 4 stars.

Cute and funny romance with a 12y age-gap.
Both MCs were great. One was a 27yo sunshine jockey player courting his mate & the other a 39yo grumpy writer who felt his prime was long past.

The first half was pure bliss! And all the things involving Dmitri’s work as a writer, and all the talk about books and well crafted stories, was EPIC!

Dmitri and Thierry are fantastic! I laughed a lot while I was reading this -- it's joyful watching their interactions, listening to their banter. And Thierry teaching Dmitri French? Hot as hell! So nice to have an MC who's not a perfect hard-body, too.

I need fresh undies. This book was that funny!
You're reading about a pair of wolf shifters, Dmitri Sernov and Thierry Marrou who meet under some odd circumstances, even for shifters. Dreams that make you fight your way across an entire continent. Body-checking your "mate" at a hockey game only to track him to a bar and make him leave with your aggressive ass after only three measly words ... who knew?

The first book, Launch the Hunt, was great—in a squishy sweet kind of way—and Logan and John had some moments that could be considered comedic, they were just quiet-er. That said, there is definitely some humor in this book that appealed to me in a can't help but laugh-out-loud kind of way. My neighbors probably think I'm a loon as my favorite reading spot is my front porch, but honestly, I don't care. It was worth it.

I mean seriously ... in the middle of a wolfy BJ, this is where your brain goes?
Gripping Dmitri's hips in his hands, Marrou buried his nose in the damp space between Dmitri's dick and his balls, and took a deep whiff. "Oui, oui, oui."

All the way home, Dmitri thought stupidly ...

And Nathan—OMG Nate, Nate, Nate, I cannot wait for your story! The roasting he initiated with Dmitri in the bar was hilarious, although it did take all of the characters, MCs and peripherals, to set the scene and make it work. A blow-by-blow *chuckle* headcount of Dmitri's conquests proceeds and it just gets more and more hilarious as D gets more and more uncomfortable and Nate gets more and more gleeful.
They both [Thierry and Dmitri] jumped at Nate's shout. "Mac! Mac!"
The brewer stepped out of the kitchen, looking around the bar in alarm. "What?"
"Pop some popcorn!" Nate settled on an elbow and gave Dmitri a look of dopey delight. "Marrou's learning about Dmitri's past!"

Nate loves a trainwreck
So, since it is a review and I am compelled to offer some criticism as this is not a five-star read, here it goes. Weeehhll to be honest, some of the smexy scenes were a little ... gross unless you are into licking armpits and excessively hirsute men—if you are, no judgement, it just doesn't turn my crank. And although this next one is not limited to just this book: I reeaaally detest short stories. They always leave me wanting more of something ... sometimes everything. In this case they leave me wanting more sex, more sex, more sex (even if some of it was a little gross) and more of the HEA stuff ... not in the what-are-we-doing-ten-years-in-the-future sense, just in a gimme-a-teensy-weensy-clue-about-where-these-guys-are-going kind of way.

Seriously, like, comethefuckon! What is an active man in his prime, an out of work hockey player, going to do in the middle of nowhere Alaska with an unemployed writer as a mate? After all the angst, is it too much to ask to have an inkling where this couple is headed? As it stands, you only get to read about the immediate present. That bugged me, a lot, but, in all fairness, I knew what I was getting into from the page count. And still ... authors, if you're reading this, I hate short stories, and *cue the ominous tone of voice* I am not alone.

All in all, an enjoyable read. The tropes weren't too tired, the shifter aspect isn't the end all be all with the fated mate insta-love stuff that can get old if it doesn't have some interesting plot twist—like with Strength of the Pack—to make it stand out from the rest (not sure originality is even possible in that genre anymore). The dialogues were well written and mostly believable and the storyline was engaging even if it was, IMO, too short. The fact that all three of the books in this series are standalones but so closely related chronologically as to be serials helps a little. I will let you know just how disappointed I am, if at all, in the brevity of the timeline in the overarching series after book three.

Dmitri Sernov is staring down forty with a creative well as empty as his bed and the last thing he needs is a beautiful, intimidating, obnoxious pub bent on exposing Dmitri’s underbelly. He’s just been kicked off a piddling local squad in nowhere Alaska, but one whiff of the silver wolf on the opposing bench was enough to convince Thierry Marrou that the dreams that drew across a continent were very real.

The second novel in the ‘Grizzly Rim’ series starts fun and flirty is a rough and tumble kind of way but soon gets very real with lots of emotionally gripping turmoil and a budding relationship that keeps readers in suspense. The two heroes are strong characters with different personalities and issues that make readers wonder if this romance has a chance to become something more. But along with all the emotional turmoil, there’s lots of sizzling chemistry, super-heated passion that could melt the tundra and some laughs as well, making the story a well-rounded and enjoyable one to read.

The plot is steady paced and keeps readers tuned to the pages as both couples have some vulnerabilities that readers can relate to and then Thierry gets some disturbing news that rocks his world and throws him off his game, which in turn causes a meltdown and relationship woes that could end with broken hearts. Readers can’t help but become caught up in his story as Dmitri and Thierry turn the heat up in Alaska.

Lets pop in another visual of what my face looked like a majority of the time while reading this:

More shapeshifting in this one! YAY! But instead of eagles, we've got wolves!!
In this one, the folks get a hard on from simply looking at each other. For real though… what's up with shapeshifters and their absolutely ginormous libido's!?

This story was different. More drama and I guess trauma. But it was a healthy mix and somehow I liked it.

So a fair note on these short stories. The relationships between the characters develops FAST! Like… 10 pages in, they are like: “I wanna rail this guy!” And another 15 pages further into the story they are like: “I am railing this guy!” So if you don’t like that, please do not read this.

I liked the storyline and the characters, but the writing was quite bad and confusing. There were two MCs, Dmitri Sernov and Thierry Marrou; I don't know why the author didn't stick with one name (first or last) each. I could understand if they're interacting with other people, but it's just two of them talking or thinking about each other! I felt like there're four MCs instead of two when reading the story.

The head-hopping and 100+ "the man" as epiteth made me crazy.

Dmitri stared at him for a long moment. “Who are you?”

His eyes widened as Thierry straddled his lap, took the man’s face in his hands. “Not a mouse.” Cautiously, he lowered his mouth to Sernov’s and kissed him.

Loved the first half of this book and the idea that Thierry has chased across the countryside after dreams that led him to Dmitri.

The second half was out there stuff about Thierry’s parents that I didn’t feel added much to the relationship or plot, other than to give some background about why Thierry wasn’t playing hockey. It seemed all a bit unnecessary when more could have been done to explore Dmitri giving Thierry the connection he wanted. I don’t think the book successfully did that.

This was cute, sweet and not too deep. I enjoyed it but wasn't riveted and the drama at the end felt like it wasn't thought out very well.

Surrender the Chase is the second book in the ‘Grizzly Rim’ series. This story stars Dmitri Sernov a wolf shifter and writer who has writer’s block. Thierry Marrou is the other wolf shifter who’s hunted far and wide for the man in his dreams. This is told in third person through both Dmitri’s and Thierry’s povs.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

I really enjoyed the first Grizzly Rim book. This book was pretty much right on par with that one (as far as my enjoyment) except for one thing that bumped it up even more...HOCKEY! I am a true sucker for books with hockey players in them, so this was perfect for me.

At the end of Launch the Hunt, we see the basic beginning of this book. Dmitri is at the bar with his friends, a guy slams into the bar and glares at Dmitri, and they leave together. It made me go "HUH????" when it happened, but the start of Surrender the Chase answered that beautifully by going back in time a bit and built up to the scene. It was well written.

Dmitri is 39 year old man who is seen by others as a player (likely because of how he was when he was younger), but he is really a quiet guy who prefers the quieter life. He doesn't want the party scene, and he struggles with his confidence in his physical attributes (he's gained a little weight, is turning gray, etc). He has a hard time thinking anyone finds him attractive.

Thierry is a little more than 10 years younger than Dmitri and has tracked him down. He has been drawn to Dmitri for a while. When they finally meet, there is instant chemistry. Thierry is brash, loud, confident, and so ridiculously sweet when it comes to Dmitri. He has this appearance of not caring about a lot, but he really seems to have a heart of gold.

Dmitri and Thierry worked really well together. There was a definite spark between them that neither could deny. It was insta-lust, but not really insta-love and I thought that was written well. I really enjoyed reading about them learning about each other, sharing secrets, working through problems, and playing hockey.

Now I am left saying "NOOOOOOOO! I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON WITH NATE!!!!!" I can not WAIT for book 3! There are no cliffhangers for the characters that the books are about, but they definitely end where you can see who the next book is going to be about and makes you want to know what is going on NOW.

I am becoming a true fan of Ms. West. I have loved these last 2 books! Did I mention there is hockey? :-)

While I liked this one slightly more than the first, I still wasn’t wowed in any way. Dmitri is actually a much more likable character than the impression I was left with from book 1. I liked his growth into the sweet man he actually was. Thierry was an interesting character. He came on as quite aggressive at first but became more subdued as the story moved along.
My issues with this are the same as I had before. There is a lot of repetitiveness, especially for the first ½ to ⅔ of the story, which is when most of the “excitement” begins. And, there were the things in the storyline that just didn’t make sense to me, such as Thierry describing his travels westward by joing and leaving “professional” hockey teams along the way. Really? And how is Dmitri surviving as a writer when he’d only published on book over a decade ago, has no internet and no agent or publisher pushing him to meet deadlines?
This story contains the same cast of characters introduced in John’s and Logan’s story plus a few new ones. And, as before, we’re left with Dmitri and Thierry in a HFN with an epilogue that is mainly a set-up for book 3.

Set in Alaska this is a romance between two shifters that turn into wolves but they're not werewolves. Different fantasy lore. There are also other shifters present in this community of (mostly) hardy men who play ice hockey and enjoy the outdoors.

The magic realism overtones don't only come from being shape shifters - like native American mythology but without any origin story given - but also from why Thierry turns up in the book and community. He's dreamt of someone - Dmitri - and needs to find him! This leads Thierry to leave ice hockey teams in various towns to travel closer to where his dream says he should be. No explanation for how that happened, and that's actually fine.

I enjoyed the relationship building between Thierry and Dmitri. I found the uncovering of family secrets interesting and it deepened the characters but didn't make me have much sympathy for the secret holders. The book was fine as escapism.

No complaints except the unnecessary and sickening use of AI for a book cover.

This is the second book in Mia West's 'Grizzly Rim' series and follows the story of Dmitri and Thierry, the shifter who charged the door at the end of the first book. From the outset, I have to say that I just fell in love with Thierry. He was so endearing and had me laughing out loud at some points with his comments and antics.
He and Dmitri were a really good fit together and I think this book successfully builds upon the world created in book one. And the ending once again left me hooked- I had to immediately buy the next book! Can't wait to hear Nate and Mac's story... and then move on to the first spin off series.
Overall, I would definitely recommend reading this book but it does work best having read book 1 - you just get slightly more from the story I think.

HOCKEY/SHIFTERS!! EXCELLENT!!!

GRIZZLY RIM Book #2. WOW!! This is a FANTASTIC Book. I'm enjoying getting to know MIA WEST, I love finding Authors who light up the pages. Dimitri is an Author in Alaska. His writing is failing and writer's block has set in. Thierry is a wolf on the run. He's chasing a man from his dream. These two are intriguing from the start. Head butting, snarling, learning what makes the other tick. This is fast paced and kept me glued to the pages. As a reader, I believe I've found a diamond in this Author. Thankful that I paid attention to promotions being offered. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THE GRIZZLY RIM SERIES!!!!!!!!!!

Dreamer vs Experience. . . Mates?

How do you find your mate..well if you are a certain wolf you get dreams that point you a certain way. If you are a settled wolf and a mate shows up you just look at said mate and think crazy has come to visit.

But they work really well together, where one is impulsive the other is settled. As they work through there confusion and learn each other they find a beautiful blending of traits that make a powerful couple.

A spectacular addition to this series can't wait for the next installment!

This was such a different book in comparison to the first one in the series, but just as good. The characters came to life and they had such different motivations and insecurities to Logan and John. Their thought processes really came across brilliantly.

I have to give an extra shout out to the ending. Like in the first one, there was the set up for the next book in the series and I just had to laugh so much at the dry reaction of Mac. I'm not going to spoil, but I can't wait to start the next one.
