Well, it's over.

There was and is so much to love about this series. It was multicultural, interracial and GLBT-inclusive--three for three right there. Beckit was described as dark-skinned with natural hair (and let's be brutally honest here, dark-skinned heroines who are NOT victims or self-pitying figures are seldom seen in books or films. Even my beloved IR genre has issues of colorism). Beckit was also a high-school swimmer before she got whisked away to the planet of Traterra. She was self-sufficient, smart, no-nonsense and brave in the face of the unknown. It was cool for the dark-skinned, short natural-haired and big girl to be the love interest of the hot and mysterious knight. There was humor along with the adventure. It is definitely imaginative. There were unforgettable characters like Beckit's ride or die best friend Tameka and Aaron's tough-as-nails grandmother Keira who had no room for "stupid women". This line courtesy of Tameka pretty much says it all:

"Ooh snap, Aaron's grandmama is a thuuug." This after the old woman blew away a potential attacker with a log-barreled shotgun.

That's why it really and truly breaks my heart that I just couldn't rate Conquered any higher than three stars.

It really hurts me to say I was totally disappointed with the direction Conquered took. A direction I saw happening in the previous volume. The Beckit I had cheered in Armored got turned into the worst thing that can ever happen to a fictional heroine. She got turned into a near Bella Swann clone (the only saving graces were that Beckit and Aaron weren't anti-sex and thankfully no scary uterus-devouring demon child). There were moments where I asked myself was I really reading the same story that had me doing happy dances and wanting to marry the author. Instead of concentrating on the task she was chosen for, a task her parents had sacrificed their lives for, Beckit seemed to have lost lost all perspective. It was Aaron this, Aaron that. Aaron became the raison d'etre rather than a compliment. Yes, she rescued him from the nightmare realm but then it's ooh let's get married first then we'll save Traterra. Let's adopt Linnie too. Let's play matchmaker to a werewolf and a vampire.

Just. No.

And much like that dratted Breaking Dawn, the final war between Beckit and Crimson came as an anti-climatic mashup of The Two Towers, Eragon, Harry Potter and Star Wars. The good guys won. Characters I loved died , but I felt they died in vain. Yes, it was obvious a war was coming but it never seemed to mean as much to Beckit. She just didn't seem invested in learning to use her te-trad powers (something I noticed in Honored). She only seemed to "train" when forced to. But just like horrid Bella, Beckit becomes a "super duper te-trad", able to utilize everyone's powers or something to that effect.

This is why I often HATE romance in YA fantasy. Whatever adventures/agency a heroine might have becomes subsumed once there's there merest whiff of testosterone. I want Xena, not Snow-freaking White! Becks darling, sugarplum, honey bunches of fluff, hear me out: The baddies killed your parents. They killed your guardian. They kept trying to kill YOU! They went after your friends. They went after the guy you'd fallen head over heels with. Any sane heroine with an ounce of attitude would be out for blood, not a damn wedding ring with a guy who has trust and boundary issues! And Becks honey, sweetie pie, my little quiche lorraine, you're only EIGHTEEN FREAKING YEARS OLD! Aaron was your FIRST serious relationship. He's older than you and as you found out in book two, had sown not just wild oats, but the whole damn field *facepalm*. I can just imagine how married life is going to be with a man who gets his armored undies in a twist whenever another male (including friends) even stands too close to you.

And why the hell did everyone want to have CHILDREN?

This is not to say that Beckit was totally weak. She had those rare moments of glory where she got her moxie back, like when she sat in council, but those moments couldn't make up for the entire story.

I have to give the three stars to Tameka, who may have been switched at birth with Beckit. She got most of the best lines and was ride or die (literally) right up to the end. Tameka at least had goals to be a doctor. I don't know what Beckit was planning to do.

In spite of the huge letdown, M.A. Wilder still gets major kudos for bringing diversity to a much-needed and way-past time genre. I hope she plans to revisit Traterra soon. I loved Ran and Frost. I loved Denzin and Dozen.

Beckit though...you broke my heart. Gonna go grab Rat Queens #1. I desperately need my kick-ass heroine fix.

4 stars -- This was a solid conclusion to what turned out to be a very entertaining trilogy!! I think the strengths of this story lie in their diversity, the rich and varied world the author describes, and the humour mixed with emotion.

This book, like the previous ones, gave me things I both loved and not so much. It was a bit of an up and down read, but balances in the good (obviously, since I gave it 4 stars). Since I finished this while on a vacation where I didn't have my laptop, this review is going to be more terse, since all I could do is send myself bulletpoints to try to remember. Here goes...

I wasn't super happy with the way certain conflicts were resolved with very little explanation, it seemed really easy and kind of like a copout. But then the author did bring it back in the end and gave it more purpose, so I'm not as disappointed as I initially was. But I still kind of wish that things weren't resolved in that way. And yes, I know that's super vague, but I don't want to spoil things.

I was disappointed that Aaron suffered from a case of assumptionitis not once but twice… Once made sense, the second time was annoying and I was disappointed that there wasn't another reason for the wall.

I loved some of the developments with some of the secondary characters, particularly Ran and Frost. Thinking back on the series as a whole, I do wish we'd learned more about Frost and his backstory, but since I got some great developments in the Ran and Frost area, I'm still satisfied. I also really enjoyed all the new creatures that were introduced, both bad and good. The Tables amused me. And Era and Hakeem Wyvem were cool, I liked knowing more about those other members of the Té-trad.

Strangely, I didn't feel quite as much emotion at the first battle with the losses that occurred there, but I liked how it changed the story entirely, and kind of stepped things up a notch. I just wish that I'd been able to feel those losses more...not sure if it's because of the way they came about, or just the mood I was in when it occurred.

On the other hand, I felt a LOT of emotion with the final battle and climax, and really felt the sacrifices and desperation. Like really felt it. It was so well done.

One of the things that was vexing me at the end of the 2nd book was the lack of development with the overarching plot...like who was Crimson? What is the Té-trad? And what is Beckit's ability? Thankfully I loved the twists and turns of who Crimson was and other bad guys. And I was thoroughly satisfied with the way the Té-trad stuff played out, and Beckit’s ability was really rather cool and added some great twists of its own in how the battle would play out.

So yeah, like I said...solid conclusion to a very entertaining series.

Why is it over already??? I enjoyed this entire series! The story jumped around some in order to button up the whole story line, but I was so happy with the ending. This story made me happy, sad, angry, excited...I enjoyed seeing the growth and development of the characters. I couldn't put it down, and when it was over I wasn't ready to give up this crazy alien world. I hope Ms. Wilder writes more, I'd be so interested to read it!

I enjoyed this series more than i thought I would.

When shit started to hit the fan, i was on edge and very, VERY invested in what was happening. The author did a fantastic job in keeping your attention. Lord knows my blood pressure was through the roof at times. Beckit had more and more piled on her plate, which brings me to my issues with this book...

I did find it bothersome that it took Beckit 2 and half books to learn her "powers" and she didnt really entertain the thought of being able to defend herself, let alone swing a sword, until she was being sexually harassed almost daily (Honored). Her amount of vulnerability was beginning to make me uneasy in book 2, but I wasn't ready to give up on her just yet, and I'll be damned if her lack of self defense skills didn't follow her halfway through book 3!

Also, we spent a whole chapter of them preparing to go into the nightmare realm, only for them NOT TO GO???? Why even bother??

We spent more time focusing on the romance and drama than we did getting to know the rest of the te-trad group, and the info we were introduced to was thrown in there to the point where it seemed rushed and out of place. For example, Beckit asking Era about her son while she's singing to little Wright was not exactly a good time, to ask, that...

Perhaps these are little things that could've taken place instead of, say, a wedding (which I felt could've waited til after the battle), or constantly going in and out of the drama of the side relationships. Like seriously, you guys just survived an attack from within the castle and you STILL plan a wedding???

And as much as I adore Ran and Frost, who the hell wants to have a baby days before they go to war??? Like, really?

Priorities, people!

Another thing... why spend time establishing such epic characters only to kill them off the first time we see them turn?? I mean, i get it, its a battle, some people have to die, but shit. Hakeem and Era at the same time (still not quite sure on exactly how they died)?? We JUST met Era, ffs. You even gave her a horn she didnt get to use! This is what happens when you spend so much time establishing the irrelevant side stories/drama that you forget you have about 500 other characters you have to build, since you introduced the 1 or 2 books ago.

Not to mention the death of my absolute favorite chatacter (I won't say his name, I'm still dying inside).

And to top it off, the battle was written like it lasted all of 15 minutes. Oh, and don't forget Aaron and Beckit calling a time out to have a 10 minute goodbye to the kids. And when the hell did Frost and Ran go and help?! Or were we just supposed to assume that they were out there with everyone else?

And Tameka, honey, should've stayed the hell on Earth! Poor girl really thought she was missing out... and all she missed out on was getting tossed off the side of the castle.

And how the hell did Crimson get up there unseen?! They didnt have a whistle-blower?! It is a true miracle that they won. Honestly. And hell, Beckit died so many times that her final "death" wasn't captivating or convincing.

Theres a lot more that i could say, but some other reviews took the words right out of my mouth.

BUT, overall, I enjoyed this series. It was an easy and fun read, and i will definitely be reading more of this author's
work.

Jesus. Fucking. Christ.

1. You set us all up for going to the nightmare realm. You even start gathering a search party. How DARE you bait and switch readers like this?!?! Choose a different career, bitch!

2. Okay so once again we visit the issue of metaphors. Stop it. Stop this immediately, right now today. Call Pepper Pace. Y'all should be best friends, because neither one of you bitches can write a fucking metaphor.

3. Okay there's that thing where they wait for shit to get extreme again. You just can't write, bitch.

4. All of this bullshit they're facing gets WORSE and Beckit moves the wedding up? FUCKING. STUPID.

5. Aaron's granny is a literal sex worker. WHAT?

6. Killing Atlas on their wedding day, ALONG with Era and Hakeem was FUCKED. UP.

7. Mezan is a traitorous cunt.

8. Okay this children raising children thing is BULL SHIT. No 18 year old, married or not, is adopting two kids!

9. Rillage gaen switching sides is kind of a good idea. This was okay writing. It was predictable, but it was okay.

10. All these people are trying to have babies when this war is going on?!? UNREALISTIC.

11. Tameka leaving was smart! What the fuck she bring her dumb ass back for?!?

12. Aaron using Linnie as bait made me mad as fuck. Again with the UNNECESSARY drama.

13. You use SO many words that are extraneous and unnecessary. For what? Are you obsessed with thesauruses? You keep trying to sound over intelligent and you're just coming off like a kid writing a shitty essay. Stop it.

14. You took these mermaids from Harry Potter. I'm on to you, and so is J.K. Rowling.

15. "She was about to take off when she was hit with a strong gust of wind. Then she heard it. Wings? “Thought!” Aaron shouted. But it was too late."
Bitch, WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!?!

16. Why in the fuck is this epic battle for good five fucking minutes long?

17. Beckit dying AGAIN is so uneventful that I wish she had stayed dead.

In conclusion, this entire series was a shitty dumpster fire. Don't read it. It is three days of your life you will NEVER get back, and at the end you'll be ready to slit your wrists, as I wish I had done in the very first chapter of the very first book.

One of the best books I’ve read this year

This book has just about everything in it. Love, heartbreak, betrayal, kidnapping, death, throw in a bit of prostitution and this is gold! I would read the whole series! Start with Armored so you know the background of the story. Beautifully written. I would see more from the author so i will definitely keep a look out.

What an ending!!!!!

Conquered is the final installment of The Te-Trad Tale by M.A. Wilder and it does not disappoint! I am always leery going into a final novel in a series. Will it live up to my expectations? Will the author do something crazy and kill my favorite characters? (Erm......Veronica Roth) Will I leave the series satisfied? The answer to these questions after reading this book: yes, maybe (no spoilers), yes.

Book three picks up two days after the shocking ending of book 2. If you haven't read book two yet, please do NOT read this spoiler! Cliffhangers kill me!!! At the beginning of the book, Beckit is being kept under sedation and she is dreaming of Aaron. Is he alive? She's convinced he is so with the help of Atlas, the story begins. But the story isn't just about finding Aaron. This plot revolves around two other major themes: Beckit developing her Te-Trad ability and the final showdown with Crimson.

I don't know that I've said this enough....I love these characters!!! Beckit is a strong heroine and in this final installment she really comes into her own. She finds and develops her Te-Trad ability, she's strong for her friends who are really now her family, and she kicks butt! Aaron is as dreamy as ever and his character has a lot of growth in this book that I loved. It's fun watching the macho guy have a breakdown and come to terms with it (is that sadistic of me?). All the others are back as well: Ran, Frost, Tameka, Royce, Atlas, Xoe, and Linnie. I love them all and I feel that each of them got a good conclusion to their stories....though I would love to see more of Linnie and Xoe please!?!

Not too much world-building in this installment since it's already been established, but again the imagery of this series is phenomenal. I would love to see black flowers with vivid blue centers in real life!!! In my mind's eye, Traterra is a truly beautiful and dangerous world. And I want it no other way.

This last book took me on an emotional roller coaster. I cried a lot! I laughed just as much and the ending left me happy and content for the characters I've grown to love. At nearly half way through Crimson crashes a wedding and some characters die. I literally had to sit the book down so I could have a good cry before I continued. Amazing read!!!

For this to be a debut series, the author has done an awesome job. Yes there's grammar mistakes as with any indie author, but despite those the story flowed well, the characters were developed with their own unique personalities (an amazing feet considering how many characters were in nearly every chapter) and the world-building/imagery was outstanding! I can't wait to see what this author has in store for us next....If you enjoy paranormal romance, young adult with strong heroine, vampires/werewolves/witches/aliens/knights/mermaids then do yourself a favor and pick up this book! I promise you won't be disappointed.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book as well as the rest of the series. I read this book in one sitting just like I did the first two books. This is an awesome series! I'm so sad that it is over but loved how it ended.

This story picks up where we left of with Beckit on Tratera with her beloved Aaron fighting the evil Crimson. And of course Tameka, in all of her sassy glory, is back. As well as the rest of the gang. Through all of the tragedy and ups and downs in the war against Crimson we see all of the characters that we have fallen in love with. Ms. Wilder gives us an amazing ending to this fantastic series. This series, as well as Ms. Wilder does not disappoint. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

*sigh* this was such a good series! Aaron and Beckit.... What a heartwarming love story! I totally fell in love with them from day one. Conquered was an excellent way to end this series..., there were still jaw dropping WTF moments that took me by total surprise!! Not to mention the action packed, humorous, terrifying scenes throughout the book! I couldn't believe how much this entire series hooked me from the very beginning. And that ending.... *sigh* I don't want to give anything away, but I will say, I hugged my nook like if it were Beckit herself. U have to read this series.... It's a definite must for all those hopeless romantics out there

I absolutely LOVED this series! I've been looking for something like this to read for a LONG time. Something with romance (but not too cheesy), multicultural characters, paranormal, and humorous with a captivating plot! I quickly and easily named it one of my favorites--even before I finished reading the first book. I enjoyed it very much!!
