Rate this book
A talented artist and gifted costumer, Jayne Wright has always been a bit different. She attends the cons to Cosplay in her original designs. Jayne can see the potential in working with him, but the man says all the wrong things, he never smiles and has an unnatural fixation with her posterior. Dr. Toshi Yamaguchi is a mild manner professor by day, and in his mind, a vigilante at night, or at least he is in the comic book in his head. Each con he attends he hopes to find a connection that will bridge his two worlds to fulfill a lifelong dream. What he finds is Jayne Wright, who charges up his heart and gets into his head. They both are ready to get into the comic book arena, but neither is sure what will be the cost to play.

Had The Cost To Play been strictly about two people--Jayne and Toshio--who loved comics, cosplay and other forms of awesome geekdom (and who eventually fall in love) I would have rated it a full five stars. Instead it got bogged down (unneccessarily I might add) with family drama, stereotyped black female "friendships" and the "I'm Black, you're fill-in-the-blank" face-palming conversation that no sane person would EVER have in the midst of a sensual massage.

I wanted more geekery, and it was quite clear the author has a nerd streak more than a mile wide. Anyone who knows about 'Record of Lodoss War' has got to be cool. That's why I wanted more cosplay. More discussions about Storm of the X-Men. I wanted more con scenes, especially Anime Expo (a con I've been attending for over eight years). I wanted to be immersed in that scene--the cosplays, the excitement of Artists' Alley, the musical performances (how can anyone write about AX and NOT mention the kick-ass J-Rock/Visual Kei groups who've played there)? And while cons can be fun, there are also issues of sexual harrassment and assault (check out the group Cosplay Does Not Equal Consent) which the author admirably did not shy away from.

Mostly I wanted Jayne to act like a freaking grown-up, not a little girl still needing the approval of her family and friends to be happy.

If I could have skipped the BET-style drama, I would have been loving this book six ways til Sunday. I would have been holding it up as an example of fresh ideas in IR. I love geek heroines--Black ones especially. Jayne dressed up as Misty Knight was awesome. So was Jayne and Toshio developing their own comic book. The fact that both were into cosplay. All of that would have been sufficient.

I did like Toshio. His tendancy to say exactly what he thought was refreshing. Like most heroes in IR books, he knows what he wants and isn't afraid to go after it. Granted, his initial attraction to Jayne (dressed as Gambit nonetheless) left a LOT to be desired. As I posted in a status update, Gambit is a smooth-talking Cajun with a definite chivalrous streak. He would NEVER (as far as I can recall) be so vulgar as to oogle a woman's ass (or at least say it out loud). If you cosplay Gambit, do it all the way. And unlike Jayne's girlfriends, his guy pals were multiracial and one was gay. They didn't seem to have an issue with Jayne. They just liked seeing their friend happy.

Contrast that with Jayne's dysfunctional bunch. A collection of every bad Black woman stereotype out there. Doesn't matter that they're successful, educated and financially independent. One likes being the "other woman". Another isn't happy with the decent, hard-working Black man she has. The last one I don't remember because I was too busy facepalming over the other two. Oh wait, the last one was a "gold-digger". It's like Tyler Perry wrote that part of the book. And of course, once Jayne has the man who makes her happy, who gets her love of all things geeky, the one jealous "best friend" decides to go Afrocentric and start spewing the whole "race-traitor, you need a good black man" line. Can there ever be a book in which Black female friendships aren't frought with so much adversarial drama? Maybe I haven't been reading the right books.

Then. There's. Jayne. This is the Jayne I loved:

However, getting a chance to don a costume and become the character changed the way she felt about herself. She loved how the costumes made her feel. In costume she was powerful and pretty. Commanding. Admired. Loved. None of the things she exhibited in real life. In real life she was a petite weird black woman with crazy hair, a gap in her teeth and dreams that men did not understand. Even her mother didn't understand her. She felt at times that her friends were humoring her when they listened to her stories.

The Jayne who decides to have a cross-cultural conversation while the man she's in love with is turning her into a puddle of warm goo needed to go far away. As did the immature game-playing Jayne who decides to go on a date with "tall sexual chocolate with fancy car" for no damn good reason at all since she's supposed to be dating Toshi. I've (sadly) read a few IR's in which the black heroine pulls this kind of 'let me date a brotha because I'm too stupid and weak to do what's right for me instead of worrying what everyone else thinks'. I always hope such heroines (including this one) end up lonely and miserable. But since we're talking romance, Jayne finally had a V-8 moment.

Granted it can't be easy being into a scene most people still don't understand. I know that fact very well. Granted she didn't fall in TWU WUV at her first sight of Toshio (in fact sh thought he was obnoxious). I did get that and definitely sympathized with it. When she was in geek mode she was great. I did enjoy their courtship (at least from his POV). They took the time to be friends and co-creators. When they finally became intimate, it made sense (though the purple prose was also facepalm-worthy--"the queen in the tower"? Really? Call it a "clitoris" and move on). I've said this too many times before, but it's vitally important for me to love the heroines as much as I do the heroes. I had a hard time with Jayne.

And why was her family dysfunctional whereas Toshio's was intact? Traditional in many ways, but intact.

The Cost To Play was not a total loss. It just did not fully live up to my expectations. There were definitely some editing hiccups (not spelling but scene breaks and an occasion of character mis-naming). Still, it was a quick read.

Another great story by Olivia Gaines! This is the love story of Jayne and Toshi. there's a cost for everything in life. And these two are willing to pay the price to be with each other. This was a lovely story so glad that I read it. This was a very funny story I'm sure you will enjoy it and I recommend this book to you.

Unique storyline but with too many incorrect facts

My husband and I like to read books to each other at night before we go to sleep. It's a weird quirk that we have but we love it. I chose this book because the author is local and it combined some of the things we both love while also being a romance novel (I'm a sucker for love).

As a nerd and a cosplayer in an interracial relationship, I had a lot of problems with the inaccuracies of this book. Both of the main characters are into cosplay. I loved that they donned costumes of less popular characters. I disliked that the author described the characters incorrectly. Misty Knight is Foxy Brown in comic book form and was not an X-Men in any way as she is not a mutant. That's like saying Spiderman is an X-Men because he worked with them from time to time. Also, Gambit doesn't have a mask. Jayne should have easily recognized Toshi. The author would have been better off having Toshi dress up as Sunspot that way Toshi could dress as an Asian superhero and still fit the storyline of Jayne not recognizing Toshi initially.

I know some people will think my review is nitpicking but at the end of the day if you're going for something different it should be represented correctly and accurately for those not in the know. When you actually know the characters and nature of the con and it is not represented with accuracy it runs the risk of losing the reader from an otherwise truly great story.

3.25 stars. Where in the world is Toshi and Jayne? MIA!

Toshi Yamaguchi, a successful Japanese American college professor, and Jayne Wright, a successful Black America business woman, are artisan who share a passion for comics and cosplay. They meet at one of these conventions and later in their interactions discover that they want to design and present an original piece, and join together to make it happen. My problem with this story is that too many stories were being told. The main character's story was intermittently disbrused between the stories of his friends, her friends, his family and then she'd go to grandma's and stories would come out of that visit. The heroine in this story had enough issues and road blocks hindering love to fuel three or four books.

I loved Jayne and Toshi, one of my favorite reads so far this year! I enjoyed the idea of them building a relationship before the jumped into bed together. They actually had a courtship where they found common ground. I also liked getting to know family and friends, and how they would impact the new couple. The chemistry and humor between the two made this a great read for me.

Good

This book was good, but I felt it took to long to get to the good parts. if you take to long to get to the sex parts you lose these of us that read every day. That means, we read hundreds of books in a year. We do this by not only reading, but listening to the audio feature provided by our kindle. To all authors, if you want to keep us hooked, get to the sex part by or before 50% of the book is read not 64. Other wise, we consider your book as just sweet.

Such an odd little story. I loved these characters: their quirkiness, their authentic nerdiness, the eccentric humor, the small details of his family dynamic. And I loved the slow burn. The slow burn is growing on me. The slow burn allows the characters to fall in love. I like how Olivia Gaines doesn't mind spending some time with her characters. I wish all IRR authors did this.

Good to the last drop!

Ms. O, you never fail me. Your melding of lives and loves of people from different cultures and backgrounds, and all of the baggage families bring to relationships is infinitely interesting, intriguing, and humorous. Your ability to suss out the intricacies of ingrained biases and stereotypes and show us how love can conquer all is awe inspiring and I am forever a fan of your exquisite word smithing.

Toshi notices Jayne at a comic conference and is instantly attracted to her physical attributes. He quickly tries to get her information, but his approach was very direct, which Jayne deemed off putting. They met again at another comic conference and found that they had a lot in common. Since Toshi is Asian and Jayne is Black, there was also quite a bit of family cultural expectations and some distrust involved. Jayne also had some difficulties with trust because of abandonment issues with her parents.

Because of their shared love for anime, comics, and art, Toshi and Jayne were able to bridge the cultural distractions, become business partners, and life partners.

I love this story and I recommend it to all who love a bite spicy love with a big dollop of humor.

These two a match made in comics!

Two very artistic individuals meet in a way initially not acceptable to Jayne when the no filter having Toshi captures her ire by commenting on her backside. The two go beyond just getting to know each other to working together on projects around both of their love for comics and costuming I believe they call cosplaying. The meat of the story for me was the relationship and interaction between Toshi and Jayne. How after their initial stumbles getting to know each other, they showed that they got one another in more ways than one. I both cried and laughed at Jayne's interaction with her parents. Who willingly signs themselves into a mental institution when they cannot get their way? That part had me both shaking my head and trying to wrap my head around such flawed thinking. Overall I enjoyed Toshi and Jayne 's story.

Playful Story

This was a cute story. It took me a while to warm up to Jayne. She was too uptight for such a free spirited Cosplayer and marketing expert.
Her hesitancy was subsequently explained by her family dynamics, but she just wasn't that likeable initially.
Toshi was uptight as well, but the whole Japanese honor/family dynamic, made it understandable upfront.
I enjoyed Jayne's relationship with her three friend, we all have probably had to deal with those situations. Frank, Jayne's coworker, was hysterical, with his flatulence problem; Lord how she tolerated that for so long is beyond me.
All in all it was a cute story, with me really cheering them on in the end.

Woot! Woot!

Why oh why can't I find a Toshi Yamaguchi for myself? As usual, this was a great read. I enjoyed how Toshi and Jayne's relationship progressed. It wasn't sex on the first meeting, it was a car we l before you walk pace. When they finally moved to consummate their relationship it was beautiful. These two complimented one another in every way. Grandma Pearlie and her prayer closet....lmbo!!!

Anime love

Olivia captures the love of two people so affectionately. Meetings happen with no thoughts of anything ever occurring but the sudden run ins change’s prospective. I like how the common ground was established which was a positive moving towards a business. Love and collaboration makes falling in love even brighter.

Great outlining of the story
I like the fact it didn’t take you straight to bed
The story also help you to realise that cultures need to consider our past as the past, and the present I like the dignity show and helpfulness of the character

Over the top

The humor throughout this book is over the top. But so enjoyable. I don't know if I would warm up to a douche intro that Toshi had but I liked the transition.

This book was hilarious and probably one of the best contemporary romances I've read to date. The dialogue was great, Toshi was really funny, the nerd references were on point, and the overall flow of the book was really good. You rarely EVER read about cons or cosplay in romance fiction...especially involving a black female heroine. Not to mention the book was well edited and had no grammatical errors.

The only issue I had with this book was some of the stereotypes that happened in the story. I wasn't a fan of any of Jayne's friends and I had trouble understanding why they were friends at all. Not to mention how they were described...one being called an "angry black woman" by the heroine...or my personal favorite the "sister girl neck roll" that happened when they met Toshi for the first time. When these types of things came up I couldn't help but quietly feel sad that this otherwise awesome book felt the need to add things like this in order to emphasize the "blackness" of the heroine's friends. I had a real problem with it and it somewhat affected my enjoyment of the rest of the book.

But that aside I would say this book is definitely in my top 20 favorite contemporary romance novels of all time. For the most part I didn't want the book to end.

Jayne and Toshi - BRAB Online Book Club

This is Toshiba and Jayne's story, two super artists who were perfect for each other. When Jayne met Toshi she couldn't be more repulsed by his approach. Toshi, whose parents wanted him to be a doctor was hell bent on doing what he loved.

Unable to find a partner who accepted him, he found himself drawn to Jayne the minute they met. The author has a perfect way to inject humorous dialogue between the characters, whether it's the main characters or secondary characters.

I love how the story comes together and how Jayne and Toshi found their HEA against all odds. I will continue to read this author's work, I can't help it especially when I find myself laughing aloud in my doctor's office, wearing weird looks from other patients.

A Very Good Romantic Comedy

The Cost To Play is very good interracial romantic comedy that earned a four star rating. I enjoyed reading this book. I laughed at the antics of the interracial couple and their family's and friend's reactions to their romance. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a good romantic comedy.
