Read
July 8, 2012Many authors successfully attempt to describe wild, high pitch action. Kevin Helmick does this and also creates vivid, detailed, and gritty characters that truly "fit" their surroundings. Character development is also a strength of Helmick's book and the action flows in a smooth manner. This book picks up quickly at first and holds your attention all the way through. It can be a bit rough around the edges dialogue wise, but it holds together just fine. Definitely a good independent book to read, well worth your time.

Don't remember exactly when I received and read.
In this dark rual noir, 19 year old part time ranch hand Ryan Sheppard's life is about to take a turn. Haunted by reoccuring nightmares, mental blackouts and memories of a famous rodeo father, Shep comes in contact with a rare, enchanted artifact that sets him a course of violence and self preservation.
Desperate to escape the small Nevada town of Fallen, Shep and his girl Shelly hatch plan that will gain them a lot of loot, a lot of trouble, and lot of truth.
Okay, the blurb straight off GoodReads. Sounds good. Too bad it didn't read that way. Should have noticed the errors in the blurb, then it may have prepared me for the mess inside the book. The story line was okay, interesting in parts, but I couldn't get past the grammar. I understand doing dialogue in a way to portray how a character sounds when they talk, but the rest of the story doesn't need to be written that way. It was so distracting, I am sure I missed a bunch of parts of the story.
