Secrets Room

Rate this book
What would you do if you woke in a room filled with strangers, with no memory of how you got there, and no way out?

Morgan Drimmel wakes to find herself in the midst of that nightmare. The gouged, blood-splattered walls scream of terror and torture, and the unrelenting light that shines between the cracks in the walls fills her with dread.

When the others in the room wake, they form alliances, and Morgan finds herself drawn to rogue biker Slade Rivers. But dependence, for her, has always come with a deadly price.

Those inside the room have secrets too; dark secrets they will go to any length to keep from getting out. When evil rears its ugly head, Morgan will not only have to fight to survive—she will also have to trust.

I have been an avid reader for longer than I can remember, desiring the darker, edgier works of Bram Stoker, Stephen King, Dean Koontz. I first started writing in High School giving that away when my first attempt was nothing more than dribble. I wish now that I kept at it, pursued it with a hunger that I currently possess.

Writing is my passion, it is what fuels the fires inside of me and it is an all-or-nothing furnace that keeps me up at all hours.

I am married to a wonderful supportive husband, I have 2 wonderful kids and the best friends that I have waited some 35 odd years to meet.

5 CHILLING STARS

First and foremost, Secrets Room F’n ROCKED! Parts of this book have the potential to destroy your heart and soul. I’m sure it will haunt me for days! I went into this book somewhat blind, having not read any reviews or other books by Kim. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect. The blurb and cover gave off horror vibes but I was sold; ready to try something new. BEST CHANCE I’VE EVER TAKEN ON A BOOK! Forgive me, this review has to be written pretty vaguely in order to respect the readers experience. (Damn this is going to be difficult.) If you’re looking for an instant gratification, easy read with a cut and dry HEA…keep on looking. This book is up there with some of the most thought provoking, deep books I’ve ever read. As for the HEA…that’s for you to determine. Think Hunger Games on crack! Be forewarned, It’s violent, raw, uncomfortable, grotesque, and absolutely horrifying at times. Brutal and F’d up in the most incredible way. Qualities I personally love but hardly ever get all in one package. Kim’s storytelling is one of a kind. A compelling plot with an underlying message that was skillfully mastered! It truly took me on a mind bending journey I’ve never experienced before. Ok, that’s as vague as I could get I think. Sit back an enjoy the ride if you dare…perhaps on an empty stomach.

“The Shit’s gonna turn nastier the longer we’re kept in here. We’re gonna need to trust one another to survive. I know this is a tough call, seeing as though we’ve only just met, but as a man I promise not to hurt you. I’ll watch your back, Wild Thing. The only thing I ask is that you watch mine.” The silence felt uncomfortable and when she answered her voice was hard as though he’d hit a nerve. “I don’t do trust, haven’t for a long time now. All I can say is, right now, I need you more than you need me. I’m not stupid. I know I’m dead in here, it’s just a matter of time.”

I had no idea what to expect from this book and what I got was an action-packed story full of horror and gore. That's a good thing, of course, since I absolutely love horror and gore!

Morgan Drimmel, a drug addict, awakens in a room full of strangers. She searches for a way out but discovers that they are all trapped together. Scared and distrustful, the strangers form alliances and Morgan pairs up with the tough biker, Slade Rivers. The two bond amidst the chaos and panic caused by the appearance of a ferocious, bloodthirsty beast intent on ripping them all apart, limb by limb.

They struggle to survive as they witness the horrifying deaths of some of the others in the room. Their situation grows dire with each passing minute but Slade and Morgan are determined to escape the room--the secrets room, where everyone's innermost secrets return to torment them.

I admit, the constant action was, at times, overwhelming and I found the flashbacks a bit distracting at times and disruptive to the flow of the story. But overall, I enjoyed reading this book and think that the author did an exceptional job describing the horrors within the secrets room. The storyline was well-developed, as were the characters and I found the ending satisfying.

"Secrets Room" is a well-written novel--my first introduction to the talents of Kim Faulks--and I intend to read more of her engrossing stories.

ARC for review.

Looking for a nice "locked room" mystery, a la Agatha Christie or Saw where a bunch of strangers awaken in a room with no idea how they got there or why they are there and then the deaths begin?

If so, keep on walking, my friend, because I said "nice" and this one, well, wasn't. Unnecessary gore, misogyny, insane insta-love (and sex) and every horrific vice in the world. This was a slog to get through, I didn't care about any of the characters and it was a relief to finish.

5 sick and brilliant stars

Are you looking for a romance book?
Wanting a HEA?
Hoping to find another billionaire book boyfriend?
How about that dominant hot alpha male with the tight abs and sculpted, chiseled face?

Well I'm gonna tell you now.
Move on.
You won't find that here.
This is not a romance story.
This is a sick and twisted story that will make you wanna quit reading it.
Don't stop.
Keep going.
There will be light at the end of this journey.

I never read anything my Kim before.
To be honest I never heard of her.

I took a risk after it was recommended to me so I jumped in.

This is by no means for the faint of heart.
The warnings need to be read and understood.
I cringed at parts and because I am sick in the head I laughed at parts and may have even got turned on.(cue the hate messages)

Waking up in a room with others and not knowing why would be terrifying enough.
But then realizing that room was used in the past for who knows what is even scarier.

I can't go into detail because even the smallest spoiler could give it away.

Just know that what you are thinking is happening is not.

Who can trust who?
Trust no one.
Keep your mind open.
Fight like your life depends on it.

It's been a day since I finished this novel and I'm still at a loss how to convey my thoughts and feelings about it. All I can say is that it's a dark, disturbing, chilling, and suspenseful thriller, with the most intriguing cast of characters. It's so different from so many other novels of the same genre(s) I've come across. I honestly had no idea what direction the story was moving towards. I kept cheering for Slade and Morgan right up to the end. I loved them both that much. The characters were so well-developed, each of them coming across so real. I shed tears for Morgan as I could honestly feel her despair, her guilt, the fight, and the hurt she felt since the moment she was first introduced to drugs. "Secrets Room" is most definitely a novel I highly recommend.

I honestly just could not read this book and gave up just short of the 20% mark.

Not only could I not figure out what was going on, I found the writing laboured and repetitive. I was skimming large tracts and finally gave in to defeat. There was absolutely no way I could summon up any interest in continuing.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kim Faulks for providing a digital ARC of Secrets Room in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

2 1/2 stars

With caricatures instead of characters, and a "surprise" ending I saw coming a third of the way through, this book just was not very good. It started off well enough, but quickly degenerated. This was a confused effort, part of it wanted to be a harlequin romance, and part of it wanted to be an Elmore Leonard novel. I'm stubborn, so instead of giving up I ended up skimming through the last third to see how it ended, and no surprises there, except that for the subject matter, it was pretty blah.

Another razor-sharp, super-intuitive read from this amazing author. Secrets Room is every person’s worst nightmare, horror like you’ve never read before. Whatever unresolved issues you may have in your life, fix them, before it’s too late. Because, once in the room, it’ll be almost impossible to face your fears whilst fighting the demons.

If you want dark, you’ll get dark. If you want shocking, you’ll get that, too. If you want incredible insight into human nature, you can do no better than read Kim Faulks’ books. I consider myself an avid reader, averaging several titles a week, and I can honestly say I haven’t read a more untamed, free writing style in many a year.

I read this book as an ARC, and after all this time, it’s still vivid and fresh in my mind. I still have chills when I think of Morgan observing the strangers she’s locked in with, all of which have touched hers or each other’s lives in subtle but very real ways.

The characters are something else! Who would have thought there was so much sadness behind rich-girl Rachel, so much disturbed, unprincipled and misplaced loyalty behind Coulton. Carmen, Dee, Glib – all these characters are so real, so troubled and so afraid, you’ll be thanking your lucky stars you are not them.

The ending is a surprise, and it fits the horror theme of the story perfectly. Nail-biting and impossible to tear your eyes away from the page (and for those of us who are born softies, there is an alternative ending, too). I kept wishing for Slade and Morgan’s love to be given another chance. In a way, they get that. In many others, everyone gets what they deserve.

A dark, gritty, strikingly visual read with no sugar coating, Secrets Room is a book that deserves more than the five stars I can give it.

For the second time, the only time this has happened so far, Kim Faulks receives the Life Changing Read Award from me.

Congratulations, Kim!

I received a digital copy of the book via the author and negalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book totally rocks. I loved reading it. This book is just like a roller-coaster of emotions; you'll feel anger, love, excitement, joy, sorrow, horror while reading it.
This isn't a typical love story. This is mind- blowing, breath-taking story - the one that will send chills through your spine.
Can you imagine yourself waking up in a room full of strangers with blood splattered everywhere? And you have no memory of how you got there? It's terrifying but at the same time, thrilling.
But as the novel proceeds, we read about others' secrets - big secrets. Everyone wants to fight, wants to get out of this bloody room but how can you get out of this prison when there's not even a door or a window? There's no water or food and you have to fight for your survival.
This novel is so unpredictable. You can't even predict what's gonna happen next or who will die next?
The story is perfect. It's full of twists and turns. The characters are perfectly written . This is the kind of thriller and suspense novel you'll really enjoy reading.
I like how Morgan and Slade remained together and stuck with each other till the end.
Kim Faulks, you've earned another fan!

I received this book to give an honest review.
I literally sat here and debated on either giving this book a solid 3.5 rating or just bump it up to a 4. I enjoyed the story but I didn't like being confused while reading. Towards the end is where I finally understood the Secrets Room and boy was it scary.
This is mainly told through Morgan and Slade we didn't get much of the other characters such as Dee, Carmen, Jeremy and so forth.
Waking up in a room full of strangers just sounds horrifying, especially when you don't know why you are there in the first place. Now as the build up of the story was being told I did find myself going ummm what exactly is going on with everyone who are these people and why are there all together. And I got to enjoy watching the story unfold and read what sins almost each person has committed. Each sin was a bit sad and gruesome in its own way. I think the one that got to me was Rachel's sin, it was one that broke my heart a bit.
We start with them all in a room and we see how humans act when there is no way out, it is truly terrifying. Not only that we see what sins they have committed that seems to play back on them in a nightmare type dream. But it is hard to distinguish what is real and what is a dream. The Secrets Room is where your secrets come to life!
Kim has a way of keeping you on the edge of your seat and guessing towards the very end if these people will ever see the daylight again or do they have to live in hell for the sins?

When I started this, I really was not sure what to expect. (Other than having read other of Kim Faulks's work)
It starts out with no real feel for many of the characters (just like for them, since their memories are spotty), and develops that (minor spoilers) many of the people have something to do with each other, and are not as nice as they seem.
it reminded me, partway through (major spoiler if you know this film)

(Spoiler below.....)

of Tales from the Crypt, a 1972 film with Joan Collins, even though the stories of the characters are completely different. And I really feel for Morgan. This really made me think.
I received a copy of this book for an honest review.
Additional: I have now read the alternate (Kim Faulks's preferred) ending, and for me it fits the tone of the book better, and Morgan's and Slade's internal journeys. Others may say what happens; I'm going to be mean and leave you hanging.

(I really should stop writing about books when I finish them after midnight, words aren't my friend)

wow! I don't know that l can find the words to describe how wonderful this book actually is. From the moment I started the book I felt that the characters were so well detailed that I've dealt with them in other stories before.

the twist and turns that Kim puts into this story are just incredible. The characters you like initially can turn into uncontrollable maniacs on one page and be in the throws of saving the day on the next.

As the story progressed towards the end I thought I was starting to understand the sotry, then was thrown for a loop when the next chapter started. The book kept me guessing where it was going which I loved.

This is THE book, you shouldn't pass up!

It is a strangely scary but satisfying journey. I felt a connection to the characters and felt their pain and hopelessness; feeling as though I was there with them experiencing every moment til the nail-biting end!

Kim you did it again, and with each and every book it just gets better.

I dare you all to read it, and face the Secrets Room; We all have our own secrets to survive.

Great imagination. A very unusual story. A few turn of events that I never saw coming. A mild sex scene. While I was reading, I kept thinking back to the movie "Rose Red" by Steven King. A bunch of people were thrown in to a tight space. Not remembering how they got there. Not knowing if they can trust one another. No water. No food. No way out. Weird things start to happen. One by One they begin to die. Yes, I recommend this story!

From the first page you are in suspense and wondering about what's what. As you get more into to the story it's chilling but also sweet. I know you're wondering how that can be, but this is the perfect book that leaves you shaking but also melts your heart. This was my first time reading a horrific masterpiece by this talented author and I can't wait to see what's in store next.

I LOVED this book! It was so nice to change scenery into horror. But don't let it fool you, there is much, much more to this than just people in a room. They all relive certain pieces of horror throughout the story and its INTENSE. If you have Amazon rental its a definite read. I hardly ever give 5 stars but this book deserved it!

What an amazing read! It pulled me in from the very 1st page. I could not put this book down. I had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. Loved getting into all of the characters minds. I have to say it was down right scary at parts. I loved it. Way to go Kim an awesome 5 Star Read!

I received a copy of Secret Rooms from Netgalley in return for an honest review. Here is the blurb "Morgan wakes to find herself in a room full of strangers with no idea how she got there and no way out. The gouged, blood-splattered walls scream of terror and torture, and the unrelenting light that shines between the cracks in the walls fills her with dread. When the others in the room wake, they form alliances, and Morgan finds herself drawn to rogue biker Slade Rivers. Those inside the room have secrets; dark secrets they will go to any length to keep from getting out. When evil rears its ugly head, Morgan will not only have to fight to survive—she will also have to trust."

The premise of the story I really liked and I enjoyed the flashbacks that gave the back story to the characters within the room. I found the some of the characters were a bit cliché with the characters Slade and Morgan having an instant attraction to one another and Slade calling Morgan "Wild Thing". The story just did not pull me in as much as I hoped from reading the blurb. Realistically I think the book is a 3.5, an ok read.

Right from the get go, Kim has her claws right into the suspense that is woven throughout the book, and you just can not put it down!

Imagine your worst nightmare – got it? Good – now triple that – Now you’re on the right track – now add two! You’ve got it, you’ve landed in the Secrets Room! I honestly had nightmares for weeks after reading this horror-suspense, and I’m willing to bet you will too!

How many of you have unresolved issues? Oh all of you? Well, you better get them seen to because if you ever end up in the Secrets Room, you know you are going to want to be the one person that has!

Every single character in this beautifully crafted novel has a story behind them, every single one! You will feel their pain, you will shed their tears, you will be consumed by their fear.

There were parts of this book that I will honestly never forget. I can still see the images that happened into my mind upon reading, as clear as day right now.

The ending of Secrets Room is the real clincher. It follows true horror style, and something you will never forget. Of course, for the soft at heart, there is also an alternate ending.

This book was everything I expect yet more unexpected. I was expecting it to be well written, scary, and dark. But what I got was every persons’ worst nightmare. This book was spine tingling and fear gripping. This book had me evaluating my unresolved problems; trying to fix whatever problems I have, so as not to end up like the characters in the book. God this book was so dark and chilling. Being locked in a room full of strangers with no water or food. It’s hot and everybody is on edge and they all harbor dark secrets. It’s frightening watching the characters develop and interact with each other. Do not read alone or at night.

I received an advance reader copy of this book thanks to Netgalley, in exchange for my honest and insightful review.

I got this book from Netgalley to review.
This was one strange book. It starts off with a group of people who have done terrible things in their lives waking up in a room with no doors or windows. This was strange and I really did not guess where the story was going. Each person experiences flashbacks to their evil deeds so we know they are truly horrible people. But why they are in this room together and going through all this is a mystery. This is a book I would not recommend because there really is no purpose.

There's a room and none of the occupants know how they got there or why. A nightmare room - a place you don't want to find yourself - ever! Although I did work out very early on what this was about I still enjoyed it very much - so different from the usual thriller. I liked Morgan and Slade, the two main characters, and felt sympathy for their dilemma. This was a great page turner but maybe not for people who only like "cosy" mysteries! Wow! This was not at all what I was expecting. This is not just a story filled with horror and gore although, there is plenty of both. It's an amazing story that really makes you think about right and wrong, life and death, and ultimately forgiveness. This was a great read and I highly recommend it.
