Oh I loved this one so much! It was such an enjoyable read-quick, swoony and an utter delight! Loved that even though Ellie was a princess, she was pretty easygoing. I thought she was the perfect balance for Erik❤️.

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone

– this is told from Ellie & Erik’s points of view

– it is mentioned that Erik’s father passed away due to cancer 8 years prior

– Erik is still dealing with how his parents separated & his mother is now marrying someone only 10 years older than Erik

Review:

I really enjoyed this quick and cozy read! I loved that Ellie was so excited to do something(s) for herself, even things that we/Erik find to be mundane. She was so sweet and not one to throw her title around, she just wanted to be normal for once. i loved that Erik was a bit thrown off by how unexpected Ellie was in dress & personality. It was fun to see him battle against himself about keeping his distance like he should as the bodyguard or getting to know Ellie more & fall for her despite the space that would soon be between them.

Summary:

Princess Eloise just had her arranged engagement to a neighboring prince cancelled on her and all of her plans for the future have crumbled to nothing. She has no idea what route to take with her life going forward as she always thought it’d be in another country. In an effort to help her, her parents allow her to take a vacation. Anywhere she wants to go, as long as she brings along her bodyguard. For once, she can be just Ellie and no one will be looking to her and think ‘princess.’ And when a last minute issue leads to a new bodyguard to accompany her on her trip, Ellie wonders if maybe there’s something between her and him. Because of all the men she’s met, none have made her feel like he has…

Erik is looking forward to his next mission for Black Swan Protection for more than one reason. The biggest being it is the perfect excuse to not attend his mother’s wedding. But when his assignment falls through, Erik is willing to do anything to have that security back. Even if it means going into a last minute job blind without knowing anything about the client or what they’ll be doing while under his care. And when he finally does meet the client, Erik finds himself unsure what to do. Because though Ellie is a princess, she is nothing like he expected and she wants to fly by the seat of her pants for her trip. Which means no planning ahead and not knowing what could come their way…

"Princess Ellie-doesn't seem like a princess at all. My subset of information is very small, consisting mostly of tabloids and animated movies, but she is unlike any royalty I have met (exactly none) or seen on TV (more than I'd like to admit)."

"I could say I didn't have dreams about dark tattoos on muscled forearms, but I'd be lying. And Mother always impressed upon me how important of a trait honesty is."

"Believe it or not, I don't keep a tux in my back seat like James Bond." In a bold moment, I look Erik over from head to toe. "Maybe you should."

"How do you ask a princess on a date? Especially when you technically work for her? The idea of something happening between me and Ellie is ludicrous. A fantasy based on the tiniest sliver of hope. But you know what they say about hope? It's hard to kill."

"Erik leans down and I hold my breath as he glances at my lips. Would I die a little bit if he decided to kiss me right now? In the middle of a bridal boutique while looking like the most handsome man I've ever seen in my life? Yes."

Read if you like:
* Forbidden Romance
* Bodyguard/Princess
* Dual POV
* Road Trip
* Witty/Flirty Banter

This is such a fun quick novella. I don't usually enjoy novellas because I end up wanting more development, but this one hit the sweet spot.
I loved Ellie, her joie de vivre, the way that she made typically mundane things fun. I loved watching Erik learn to appreciate all of those little things by seeing them through Ellie's eyes.
I love the way the author used the 20 questions game to give more background and depth to the characters as well as it allowing them to open up more.

Favorites:
* "Can I sit in the front seat?"
* 20 Questions
* The tattoos and their meaning
* Ellie's list of things to do (McDonald's, Target, Bowling...)
* "Regular chick Ellie."
* 4 am wake-up
* "Yup, you're perfect-uh, perfectly casual."
* Erik's romance novel
* Constellations
* "I've never been to Boston in the fall." (Not sure if it was intentional, but I loved the nod to the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything - IYKYK)
* The reason for all the royal names
* The nod to Samwise and his love of potatoes

Have you ever heard the expression, “if want to make God laugh, tell him your plans,” I feel like that’s the way this novella catapults its start!  Princess Eloise Genevieve Wilhemina has just had everything she thought for her life turned upside down!  Her arranged engagement has been nullified and through some nudging she takes to the sky for a week’s long vacation as simply ‘Ellie’!

At the airport when preparing to fly out Ellie discovers her bodyguard is ill and he calls in a favor to get her a replacement upon arrival!  Ready to face the world with a newfound sense of freedom with an unknown bodyguard named Erik!  Erik, while young-ish, he seems to be very about his business and not briefed on the casualness of Ellie’s trip stateside!  Once the two become better acquainted, she discloses her lack of set agenda while insisting Erik become more relaxed in appearances as well as demeanor!  Her request does very little to quash the chemistry that’s starting to brew between them!

A vacation within a vacation ensues, sets up interesting circumstances for our protags and allows us to explore what’s below the surface of their normal day to day lives!  Who knew that 20 Questions would fuel so many emotions!  The simple things/ moments were not to be missed and I loved it!

While dual POV is not necessarily the norm for Ashley Funk’s writing, she makes it appear effortless!  The dynamics of a princess and her temporary bodyguard are top rate and it being novella length made me want more!  She wasn’t lacking anything, I just enjoyed this so much I desired to keep reading!  I have very minimal experience in reading the bodyguard trope before, but this makes me curious about other books that might contain this type of protagonist!  This is a perfect lazy day read that will allow the world around you to fade away!

Book four in the Black Swan series. The finale. After not really feeling book three, I was a little unsure of what to expect with book four. I liked the premise and just crossed my fingers for a better journey than any of the three prior had taken me on. I was pleasantly surprised with what I got. I think this one is the strongest story in the series. I enjoyed the characters immensely. Ellie was charming and light, fun and carefree - despite her title. Erik was stoic and stable but not so much that it was a wet blanket. I do feel like there was room for him to be further developed. It would have liked more depth to his character. Ellie was such a vibrant character that Erik kind of paled a bit in comparison. I think Erik’s backstory was better explored than Ellie’s though, which I was surprised by, given she’s the Princess. But surprisingly, I was okay with her Princess title not being the focus of her character. It was a good decision by Ashley Funk. I felt like the chemistry between Ellie and Erik was good, it could have been better but it was still good enough to bring a smile to my face. We did get one tension filled, heated scene - which was awesome! I would have loved more of that. When you’re working with a shorter story length and a closed door setting, you gotta ramp up those moments. They were there but they needed to be dialed up more to balance the scales better. I liked the ending but it could have been a little better. I enjoyed the epilogue but again, it could have been better or a bit longer. Overall, I think ‘Last Minute’ was my favourite book of the series. It was a great way to end of the series and I think it was the strongest story of them all. I really enjoyed it. Would recommend and re-read!

Last Minute is part of the Black Swan Protection Novellas series. This is a multi-author series, with all books being able to be enjoyed in any order or as standalones.

This series is absolutely convincing me that I need ALL the bodyguard romances... because I am just loving them so far! After a failed engagement for her arranged marriage, Ellie- a princess from a small country- finds herself heading to America for a little vacation to clear her head. When her usual bodyguard ends up unable to join her, a last-minute backup- Erik- is called in to take her place. And oh my goodness, I just adore these two together so much! The chemistry was apparent right from the start and while the bulk of the story really only takes place over a few days, it still didn't feel like their romance was rushed. Quick, yes... but not unrealistic. With him being her bodyguard and the professional boundaries there, there was a little bit of a 'forbidden romance' vibe there, which isn't always something I enjoy, but it was done in way that I didn't mind at all! Really, I just found myself enjoying every minute with these two!

Although this was definitely a shorter read, it really didn't feel that way. Would I have enjoyed more time with them? Sure, I adored them, but I definitely didn't feel like I was missing anything due to its length! The perfect bite size romance when you need a quick read!

Last Minute is a closed-door romance with nothing beyond kisses.

ARC Review:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When Ellie (a princess) learns her arranged engagement is called off, she happily agrees to a spontaneous vacation. Unfortunately her loyal bodyguard is suffering from an appendicitis. Never one to let Ellie down, he arranges a backup bodyguard. Will Ellie’s trip to The States be the distraction she desperately needs, or will she find herself in hotter water upon return?

Ashley Funk’s latest writing project, Last Minute, is a Black Swan Protection Novella. Funk is apart of a multi-author project focused on the bodyguard trope. The books can be read as a series or as standalone stories.

I devoured the Last Minute in a matter of hours. It is a novella and therefore intended to be a shorter read. However, I was swept away by this sweet story. The dynamic between Ellie and Erik had me hooked from the start. My only complaint is that this wasn’t a full fledged novel. I could have easily stayed in this story for another couple hundred of pages.

*If you are a fan of the early ought rom coms such as The President’s Daughter, Chasing Liberty, and The Princess Diaries, then this book is perfect for you!

Special thanks to Ashley Funk for allowing me to read this book as part of her ARC team. Make sure to get your copy when it releases on the 22nd of this month or preorder it now!!!

👑ARC PUB DAY REVIEW👑

Last Minute By Ashley Funk
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

For the first time in her life Princess Ellie is going to live a week like a normal person, princess duties strictly off the schedule. After her engagement is broken off she hops on the first flight, but her usual bodyguard can’t make it. And she just so happens to find her new one absolutely irresistible 🩷

OH MY GOSH!! Cute cute cute. I loved this! It’s super short and fast paced and just a really wholesome story. I loved Ellie’s attitude toward life, she was just so happy for any small opportunity to live a normal life for a bit and do normal things. She was poised and just gracious and I love her! Erik was just so sweet, his instant attraction towards Ellie didn’t keep him from doing his job of protecting her. I thought the two had phenomenal chemistry and hit it off instantly. This was such a great book, the minute I picked it up I was pulled in. It didn’t take more than the first page to catch my attention and those are the BEST books! Thank you @ for this ARC & allowing me to help you promote your new book!🩷

"I put my hand up as he shifts his car into reverse. He slides the gearshift back to park. 'There will be no Your Highnessing or princessing on this trip. Please call me Ellie.' Erik opens his mouth to protest, but I raise my chin and give him my most regal glare—eyebrows raised, lips pursed, and icy gaze. He shuts his mouth."

And that is how Princess Eloise begins her solo in cognito vacation, accompanied by her substitute bodyguard, Erik Donovan.

Oh, BTW, Erik reads historical romance once they settle in each night in the hotel room they share, for her safety, of course.

While she accomplishes her plan to do normal, everyday things for herself, he tries to be all detached and professional while she does her best to break down his barriers and have fun with her. The chemistry is strong, which makes this book sooo good. Their boundary-crossing interactions are sweet and swoony.

This might be my favorite of the Black Swan Protection novellas. I want to read it again.

THE sweetest novella! Never knew I needed a bodyguard romance, I loved this so much! Ashley is soon becoming a favourite of mine, just love her writing and her characters. Ellie and Erik are so cute and they have the sweetest chemistry.

Ellie, or Eleanor Genevieve Wilhelmina Haynes, is a Princess and her arranged marriage to the Crown Prince of Chastain has just been cancelled. Now her plans have been upended, her mother encourages her to have some time away. Ellie's usual agent falls ill and Erik Donovan is sent in to protect Ellie on her travels in the US. The two of them have an undeniable connection but you can't fall for your bodyguard when you are a royal princess can you??

With a touch of grumpy v sunshine, forced promixity, forbidden romance and the sweetest chemistry, this novella is so perfect!

This is a such a fun and swoony read by Ashley Funk! I have loved her other three novels, and this novella did not disappoint! Ellie is a princess looking for an adventure where she can experience new things. Erik works for a protection agency and takes his job very seriously. Their paths cross, and they both learn more about themselves and each other each moment they are together. This is a sweet, quick read that has all you will want from a rom-com: great banter, tension, twists, a protective male lead, an confident female lead, and a great HEA! This is one part of a multi-author series that can be read as a standalone in any order. Anytime you see Ashley’s name on a book, you know it’ll be good! This is just what I needed to kick off my Spring Break with!

As a Princess there is little Ellie wouldn’t do for her country; including marrying the Crown Prince of the country next door without any attraction or chemistry.

So when all the carefully laid plans are tossed out the window, it is suggested that Ellie take a break of unstructured time to clear her head…but what she didn’t see coming was a medical emergency, a solo public flight, and a dreamy Superman look-alike EPA that has walls just waiting for her to break down.

This particular story warms my heart because as a planner girl…it is a hurdle for me to let go of plans to allow for life to happen…but like in this story, when it does it can be just like a fairytale.

Genre: Royal romance
Content: minimal mild language, kisses only

Here’s another novella in the Black Swan Protection multi-author series.

In this one, Ellie takes a solo vacation. Did you know princesses get vacations? Well in this story they do! Ellie’s normal EPA gets sick which means she flies by herself (literally) to America for her trip. She’s met by an American EPA who came recommended by her usual EPA’s good friend.

Erik and Ellie have an insta-love story. They are only together for about a week until Ellie has to return to her country. Ellie is sunshine and helps pull Erik out of his grumpiness. It’s super cute!

This one releases March 22nd!

Quotes That Stood Out:
☀️ “Sometimes, you need the clouds to appreciate the sunshine.”

😂 The most incongruent thing about the whole situation is that Ellie-Princess Ellie-doesn’t seem like a princess at all. My subset of information is very small, consisting mostly of tabloids and animated movies, but she is unlike any royalty I have met (exactly none) or seen on TV (more than I’d like to admit).

👸🏼 “Aren’t there rules about this sort of thing?” Erik asks as I run my hands up the lapels of his suit coat. But his hands come to my waist, at odds with his words. “Beckett?” I ask, not taking my eyes off of Erik’s for a second. The longer I stare, the larger his smile grows, and mine matches. “Yes, Your Highness?” Beckett is oddly formal today, but I can hear the smile in his voice, even though I see nothing but Erik. “Who makes the rules around here?” “I believe you do, Your Highness.” Erik’s eyes flash as my smile stretches my cheeks so much they ache. “Well, would you look at that, the rule maker says it’s okay.” And then it’s Erik’s lips on mine and nothing else exists in that moment.

This was a dual pov, clean romance. I throughly enjoyed this story. It was on the shorter side but definitely worth reading. There is no 3rd act break up so if you aren’t a fan of those this story is for you.

Ellie is a super sweet character and so down to earth. Erik is a little up tight but I feel like that also comes with his profession. My only thing I wished the book had was a glimpse further into the future than what was provided in the epilogue (but that is entirely personal preference).

A cute read that I devoured in an evening. It was just the palate cleanser I needed from stories with heavier plot lines.

This low-stakes novella takes you on a short adventure with a princess on vacation and her substitute bodyguard that lands them in forced proximity, one-bed shenanigans (and not the kind you'd expect), a bowling alley, and a road trip to a wedding that the bodyguard would much rather avoid.

Flirty, romantic tension abounds in this sweet tale. Highly recommend.

Ellie and Erik were sweet and cute

Reading this novella was a nice surprise. I didn't know what to expect since I've not read anything by Ashley Funk before and I had a great time. Ellie and Erik make the best of last minute changes to their carefully made plans and find love along the way. I loved the characters and plot. No stress or unnecessary problems. I'd definitely read this author's books again.

It's worth the time to read!

This story is about Princess Ellie (Eloise), who goes on an incognito vacation, and her bodyguard Erik.

I found it very well-written; Ashley is a master with words. The story was worth my time to read, lol fun and entertaining.

This book is clean, contains kissing only, one mention of alcohol at a wedding, and very few bible swears.

This was a cute, quick read in between two fantasy books! Ellie and Erik were so cute together, and the story was fun. As with all novellas, the romance happened way too quick and some things (like the ending) was rushed, but I still liked it. 😄

-Bodyguard Romance
-Princess
-Road Trip
-Broken Engagement

This was my first book to read by Ashley Funk, and it was so good! I love Ellie and Erik. They balance each other so well. I love that Erik helps Ellie complete her list of mundane tasks she hasn't done because she is a princess. This story was paced well.

I cannot wait to read more books by Ashley Funk!
