Travelling across France on vacation, Pavel and Rheya end their trip in the seaside resort of Sète for a little relaxation and to rekindle the romance in their marriage. However things don’t get off to a good start, as they check into the dreary Grand Hôtel with its peculiar décor and unfriendly proprietor. The little coastal town also falls short of their expectations, its filthy man-made beaches and oppressive cemetery far from the luxury they had hoped for.
But it’s at night that the trouble starts, the hotel seeming to be alive with strange groaning, disembodied voices, floorboards creaking under unseen feet, and loud inexplicable crashes. And it’s in the wildly different reactions to these phenomena by husband and wife that a tension is revealed in their marriage, a tension that causes a fissure to gape between them. Each is forced to defend what they believe, even to the bitter end.
