How to Protect Your Leadership Influence and Power You’ve worked hard to achieve your dreams and goals. Many others have done the same—only to lose it all in the end. Every day, we read about successful people in various walks of life who have lost their power and influence. They’ve been fired, forced to resign, or shamed out of public life. They no longer have a market for their gifts, and they may even face criminal proceedings. These leaders have lost the trust of their companies, constituents, nations, followers, and families. Many were surprised to discover that their talents alone were not enough to prevent their downfall. Why did they fail in the end? Because they lacked the one quality that would have protected their leadership and given them enduring influence. Ironically, this quality is seldom taught to leaders today, either formally or informally. It is the quality of moral force, or character. Every human being is a leader over some domain as he or she exercises gifts and influence. That domain might be the halls of government, the boardroom, the classroom, the community, or the home. In The Power of Character in How Values, Morals, Ethics, and Principles Affect Leaders, you will discover what character is, what it means to develop moral force, and how to preserve your leadership influence so that it is both effective and enduring.
On this last published book while still alive, my beloved mentor Dr. Myles Munroe deals with one the worlds biggest issue; Character In Leadership.
After studying Dr. Munroe materials for many years, I have no doubt that he left a legacy of strong character, not only for his family, friends and church fellows, but also for the Bahamas and many others countries around the world.
This book taught me many lessons, as well as reminded me of many that I knew but sort of forgot them.
And, my conclusion after reading the book, being mentored from distance by Dr. Munroe himself, watched people around him, studied and listened to him for many years. I can say with all the conviction of my heart, that; Character Is Above All.
Incredibly repetitious and overly long but I believe this book is one of the most important leadership books on the market. I highly recommend it along with the DVD set sold separately. The following are a few quotes from the book:
The fallen leaders whom we know personally or read about in the headlines are warnings to us. We must recognize that every decision we make adds a sentence to our life story. Will the complete story of your life and leadership add up to something positive and honorable? There is only one way to ensure this outcome—through the intentional development of character. A leader who desires to be strong and effective will summon the courage to identify and root out his weaknesses.
Character is the most powerful force a leader can possess because it protects his life, his leadership, and his legacy.
Leadership training and development must start with the inner life of the leader before it can move on to the principles and process of leadership.
Your stated values communicate what you claim to stand for. But the values you demonstrate by your actions reveal what you truly stand for and whether your stated values have real substance and meaning. We should take time to consider what ethical messages we are sending to others.
Reputation is what others think about you. Character is the truth about you. Reputation is who you are in public. Character is who you are in private.
Character defects are like sleeping snakes that awaken and strike people when they enter positions of leadership and receive the trappings of power. As I wrote earlier, character failure often occurs when a person is in the midst of success. In many ways, success is the greatest test of character. This is because most people cannot handle success—they are not prepared for it, and the weight of it becomes too heavy for them. As a result, some area of their character collapses. Many wonderful, gifted people have crumbled under the burden of success.
Leadership is the pivotal power and means of influence to change and bring about a revival of integrity in society. This book will become a vehicle in bringing you understanding of how important personal integrity is to a leader's life. This book will be full of highlights by the time you are finished.
“We could sum up the entire message of this book in the following way; leaders stand for something - vision. Leaders stand on something - values.”
The Power of Character in Leadership is something I believe everyone should read, even if you don't consider yourself a leader. A leader is something that everyone can be and is in an area of their life. Dr. Munroe teaches up incoming leaders and old leader in The Power of Character in Leadership how to protect themselves from themselves.
The Power of Character in Leadership talks about the basis of character, values, and convictions. Dr. Munroe challenged the reader to think about their values, morals, beliefs, convictions and decided what do they stand on and for. Examples of how leaders have shown one face in public and another in private are showcased throughout The Power of Character in Leadership . Dr. Munroe talks about having a deep moral foundation how your beliefs shape your values and morals etc. He also explains that trials will come, but they shape and mold you into who you are made to be; strengthening you to be a better leader.
At the end of The Power of Character in Leadership there are worksheets to help you fill out and decide what is important to you all in the different areas discussed in the book. The Power of Character in Leadership is a great book that I'd recommend to anyone. What are your values, morals, beliefs and principles?
One of the most impactful books I've read from an exceptional leader and mentor, Myles Munroe, emphasizes a crucial lesson: while we often focus on learning leadership principles, we sometimes overlook the importance of building strong character. This book has deeply influenced my journey in developing character as a foundation for great leadership. It’s a timeless resource I’ll be passing down to my children to guide them in the future.
This is very well, easy to follow an enjoyable book. I really gained a lot of knowledge and was able to reflect and better understand my leadership style. I do believe character and values are very important attributes that a leader must have in order for his/her to effectively lead his followers . Thanks for a great read!
If you are a leader or aspire to lead and influence others, you must read this book first otherwise you will not be successful in your leadership and your failure will not only bring harm to yourself but to the people you are leading. Read this book before you read any other books on leadership. You won't regret it
If you want to be a great leader, character will always count. values, ethics and principle will show your kind of leadership. So it's pretty important to get a grip on these. You'll learn to check yourself to be a great leader.
