Helena is a healer. Ivan is her prisoner. Caught in the crossfire of war, they must choose: loyalty, or love.

The Balkans, 1383

A sudden conflict between Serbs and Greeks has forced Ivan to join his brother and fight with the Serbian army. On the battlefield, Ivan is wounded and captured by the hostile Greeks, becoming a hostage in a deadly bid for power.

Helena, a Greek midwife, is tasked to care for Ivan, a request that will not only test her healing abilities but also her loyalty. Though war has made her reluctant patient an enemy, she can’t help but forge a connection with him, yet falling in love with him could turn her world upside down and brand her a traitor.

As the Ottoman Empire extends its grip into the Balkans, events beyond their control force Ivan and Helena to choose between loyalty to their families and people or following the longings of their hearts.

Award-winning historical novelist A. L. Sowards creates an engaging world of overlords and spies, rebellions and battlefields, and forbidden love.

I love books, so that makes Goodreads my favorite social media site. As a reader, I enjoy a variety of books. As a writer, I create historical novels with a wholesome mix of action, adventure, and romance. My stories have earned Whitney Awards, Foreword Indies Finalists positions, Readers’ Favorite Gold and Silver medals, a Historical Novel Society Editor’s Choice Selection, and a Praiseworthy Award.

I'm a wife and a mother of three, and I've called Washington State, Utah, and Alaska home. I'm usually reading a couple books at once and working on multiple writing projects too. Other than that, my life is pretty ordinary. I'm grateful for that. I'll let the characters in my books have all the adventures.

About My Goodreads Ratings:
I joined Goodreads as a reader first, but since I’m an author too, I’ve made some changes to how I rate books. For fiction, I'll give a book 5 stars if I enjoyed every page. Otherwise, I'll leave the rating blank. For nonfiction, 5 star books are ones I enjoyed enough that I’d like to read them again. They’re books I connected with and highly recommend to others. 4 star books are good books that I thought were worth reading once, and they’re also recommended.

This was a fantastic book! There is so much going on! There are lots of battles, prisoners of war, hostage situations and more but also a little bit of romance thrown in. I loved Helena and Ivan. They are both great strong characters. I loved how brave Helena was and very caring towards others even in the worst of circumstances. And Ivan is the strong protector that never gives up the fight no matter what. Please check content below before reading this book, just a heads up. Overall this story is just fantastic and I definitely recommend!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Content: war violence, lots of killing that is moderately graphic including beheadings, miscarriage, a birthing scene (mildly graphic), death from birthing

AL Sowards does a beautiful job of portraying the good and hard in the challenging and uncertain times of medieval Serbia. The first half of this book is mostly rich historical fiction, full of war-like conditions. Midwife and healer, Helena, emerges as a brilliant ray of light early on in this story and her compassion and kindness goes a long way with enemy prisoner, Ivan.

The second half of this book develops a forbidden romance between two enemies in a not so typical enemies-to-love tale. While there are many tragedies, the characters rise to the daunting tasks they each face as they fight to forge peace or follow one's heart–while real-life battles continue to wage.

This series quickly became a favorite, as each situation is vivid and the fragile fragments of life and love are so easily breakable, but this installment solidified everything for me. Life during this time was very unpredictable and what was strong and stable one moment was gone the next. The powerful emotions that this author evokes were gripping. I didn’t want to put this book down and I’m completely invested in what will happen next.

Relatable although centuries apart, Helena and Ivan captured my heart.

Content: mild romance; mild religion; mild+ violence (war-type that is a little descriptive, but not gory)

What an excellent epic story! I could not put it down. Author A.L. Sowards does an amazing job with The Balkan Legends series. Her research is impeccable, and her writing is so captivating, it puts the reader square in the midst of a fascinating story of war, love, friendship, loyalty, betrayal, battles, rebellions, spies and conflicts between ethnic groups in the 1300's.

The tale of Ivan (a Serb), and Helena (a Greek Midwife) gripped my heart, made me cry, rejoice, and hang on for the ride! They are characters of integrity, faith, and exhibit self-sacrifice for their loved ones. The beautifully rich writing, the authentic characters, and the historical details, make this epic historical story unforgettable.

I cannot wait for Against a Crescent Storm, the next story in this fantastic series!

MY HEART.

I feel like I barely survived this book y’all. It took my heart out of my chest, smashed it on the ground a few times, and then picked up all the pieces and put it back together. So you know, YOU SHOULD READ IT TOO. This really took me on a historical journey. I love that the author doesn’t shy away from the hard truths of life in a different time period. It is not a linear path. The crossroads are imminent and the valleys are deep. But I loved how Helena and Ivan climbed the mountain together. As many times as it took, to find each other again.

It’s a slower paced book that really builds the journey. I loved the multiple points of view. There’s something about getting the antagonist POV that helps seal the deal on a great read. I loved seeing the mindsets and interpretations of the time period and setting. It’s gritty and the emotions are raw and also incredibly romantic.

I loved seeing how everything came together in the end. The hits kept coming and the characters kept rising. And that’s what it is all about. I CAN’T WAIT for book three!!!

Overall audience notes:
- Historical Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: closed door
- Violence: moderate
- Content Warnings: miscarriage (from a fall), many childbirth scenes (and loss of mother/child moments as well), war violence and battle themes, blood/gore/injury depictions

“Beyond the Crescent Sky" by A. L. Sowards is book two in “The Balkan Legends” series but can easily be read as a standalone. There are series-long story arcs, but each book follows specific couples and their individual stories. This historical fiction series is set in medieval Serbia, where the characters are fighting against and resisting the Serbian Ottoman overlords. I love that this is a lesser written about location and time period in books and I learned so many new things while reading the story. The attention to historical details is impeccable and the author obviously did her research. I appreciate the helpful map, list of characters, and the glossary and historical background. It took me awhile to get acquainted with the world and who was whom (especially because I am less familiar with this area of the world and I did not read book one).

Ivan (a Serb) and Helena (a Greek) are the main characters of the story, and I loved seeing their bond form over time. "Beyond the Crescent Sky” has great “enemies-to-lovers” and “ill-fated lovers” tropes and wonderful themes about loving your enemies. The characters are on a quest for freedom and faith. The faith content is beautifully done! The characters learn the lesson that God sees farther than we do, which I am sure will be encouraging to readers as well. I honestly did not know what would end up happening with our couple and they went through some extremely hard things. I love that Ivan and Helena still use challenging situations to share God’s love with others. This is a grittier and more realistic read with mild violence, war, pillaging, and scenes of childbirth. If you love medieval history, adventure, and romance, I recommend picking this one up!

Content: I give this a PG-13 rating. Some examples of the content are: war, blood and violence; miscarriage, infant loss, scenes of childbirth; death; someone beats a child; a woman was forcibly kissed and fondled; a woman is forced into an unwanted marriage and feels used by the husband after her “time” with him; a man wonders if someone has been abused.

TW: brief mention of child abuse; miscarriage; brief mention of women being ravished.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

When A.L. Sowards reached out to ask if I’d be interested in reading her newest book, I didn’t even have to think about it. After being completely in love with her previous novel in The Balkan Legends series, saying yes was easy!

What I love about Sowards is her love for the history and landscape of ancient Serbia. It’s so evident through every descriptive line in the book!

Helena and Ivan’s fight for survival highlight the cost of war, intercultural tensions and the pull of forbidden love. Add in layers of redemption, courage, and overcoming impossible odds, and you’ve got a story that packs an emotional punch! Hand on tight- this book will take you through the emotional ringer! But the ending is worth it!

Read if you enjoy:

🛡️ Suspenseful, fast-paced stories
🛡️ Well-researched historical fiction based on real events (and lesser known history)
🛡️ Medieval settings (1300s) with political drama
🛡️Male friendship similar to David & Jonathan
🛡️ A midwife heroine
🛡️ Forbidden romance
🛡️ Stories that are gritty and raw
🛡️ Dual POV

Thank you @a.l.sowards for sending me a #gifted copy of the book! It’s another powerful, moving story that I won’t soon forget.

Content warning: Descriptive battle scene injuries, medical procedures, beheadings, mistreatment of prisoners, miscarriage, stillbirths, and grief. Closed-door romance with only passionate kissing. Biblical consideration: references to saints and praying to them, securing a spot in Heaven by good works.

This is a fantastic example of exceptional storytelling, combining intense action, heartfelt emotion, a beautiful love story, and historical depth.

I love when books not only entertain, but teach me something new. This one certainly did both.

The writing was superb, the pacing was just right, and there’s a diverse cast of characters, each with their own distinct voice.

The author's meticulous research and attention to detail is obvious, making for a story that's as informative as it is captivating. With her vivid descriptions of the Balkan wars in 1383, their culture, and medieval setting, she really brought this time and place to life.

There were some parts that broke my heart, especially those regarding how women were treated, and the dangers of child bearing back then. There are several bloody battle scenes, some of which are fairly graphic, but it lends itself to the reality of war between the Serbs, the Greeks, and the Ottomans.

This is book two in The Balkan Legends series but can be read as a standalone.

Beyond the Crescent Sky is spectacularly captivating! This is the next book in the Balkan series and it was amazing! Sowards masterfully tells the story of Ivan and Helena. She puts the reader right there alongside them and pulls on every single one of your heartstrings. I was so invested in their stories, everything unfolded before me like a movie playing on the big screen. I laughed, cried, and gasped out loud so many times. You will be surprised, shocked, and continually page turn until the very last one.

Real, raw, and emotional, Sowards leaves it all out there for the readers to experience alongside the characters. I am still reeling from this story. The battles and betrayals, the sense of duty and what is right, I cannot stop thinking about it. A story of loyalty, duty, and love, Beyond the Crescent Sky is powerful and moving. Master of historical fiction, Sowards has written a phenomenal story! I received a complimentary copy of this story; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I received a free copy of this book for review.

What a way to start off my 2025 reading with this powerful historical novel that publishes tomorrow! This is the second book in the Balkan Legends series (you do need to read them in order and it’s even better if you can read the prequel novella Before the Crescent Strike first).

Set in The Balkans in 1383 this novel follows a sudden conflict between the Serbs and Greeks in the midst of a longer conflict the Serbs have been fighting with the Ottoman Empire for years. The main protagonists are a midwife/healer and a young warrior who becomes her people’s prisoner. This author is well known for her thorough historical research and that definitely came through in the rich setting and meaningful details.

This is a war story with heart. I always have a soft spot for stories where characters discover their ‘enemies’ are not as different or hateful as they think. This story effectively shows the way people draw lines in conflict and view one side as all bad and one as all good, but it’s never that simple and good people can be found everywhere. So much of this book revolves around birth and death and that was such an interesting contrast. Pick this up if you want a book with intriguing battle and political intrigue, deep emotions, slowburning and meaningful romance, and light faith themes.

I don’t want to say much about the later part of the book to avoid spoilers but it really surprised me in different parts and took me for an emotional roller coaster! Not your typical storyline.

Trigger/content warnings: war related death and violence, frequent birth scenes including tragic ones, frequent treatment of injuries. Everything is respectfully handled and not gratuitous. Steam level is closed door and mild references.

A.L. Sowards has written another book that has captured my mind, imagination, and a piece of my heart.

Ivan and Helen's story is bittersweet. There were many obstacles that kept them apart. The biggest factor was war. Add hostage situations, forced marriage, love, and a lot of sacrifices. This book was a hard one to put down.

If you were to look at my bookshelves, you might tend to think that I lean towards stories with sweet and clean love stories. While this is true, I also really love reading books that are full of history. The Balkan Legends books by A.L. Sowards is definitely a series that is rich with history. Every book by this author that I've read are full of rich history, and I love them. But there is something about this time period and characters that has captivated me even more so than her other books. Maybe it is the time period. Maybe it is the greater struggle with the Ottoman Empire. Maybe it is the connections between all of the characters throughout the books. Maybe it is the goodness of the heroes and the resounding strength of the heroines. Maybe it is the beautiful love stories that hold strong through the turmoil and sorrow. Whatever it is, I have been completely pulled in and am fully invested in reading these books.

I have picked up each one and not been able to set them down. My mind is full of the twists and turns and characters long before the story is over, and long after it ends. Definitely another sign that attests to how well written these books are. A.L. Sowards is a masterful storyteller. Her dedication to research is on full display throughout her books and will have you feel as if you are immersed in the worlds she creates.

Your heart will soar and cheer for Ivan and Helena one moment. And the next, you will be beyond belief in what obstacles come their way. There is heartache and sorrow in their story. But there is beautiful and dedication and pure love as well that when good triumphs, your heart will be triumphing right along side it!

I loved feeling immersed in this time period and learning more and more about it. The medicinal ways used for healing, for childbirth and much more. As well as the way of life and the way they protected their lands and families. The cultural descriptions and knowledge was so very interesting. Though I would never want to have lived in this time period, I love being immersed in more knowledge and understanding of it.

Thank you to A.L. Sowards for your amazing research, tireless dedication to your craft and long hours of writing so your readers can discover a love for these time periods and cultures as well.

Content: I would rate this a PG-13ish rating. Not that it isn't clean but for the war and battle aspects. They aren't overly graphic but it does contain elements of battle and death as well as prisoners and forced marriage, talk of childbirth and similar aspects. Some mild innuendos. I would allow my older teenagers to read this.

I received a physical arc, and a digital arc from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

I have also purchased my own copy.

Happy Reading!!!

ALL THE STARS!! 🤩

I absolutely loved the first book in this series—it was also a 5 star read!—and somehow this was even better. A.L. Sowards does an incredible job combining historical elements and the political climate from this late 1300s time period with her fictional story that gives it such a realistic feel to it. (Does that even make sense? 😆)

Ivan and Helena’s story is a fantastic rollercoaster of emotions. (Cue all the stress. 😅) It was absolutely heartbreaking at times and there was lots of sacrifice for both characters, but it was also filled with so much hope and love. I was constantly surprised by the direction this story went and it was incredibly beautiful.

Cannot wait for book 3!

The Balkans 1383 finds Helena as a healer and Ivan as a prisoner in a very war torn region.

This book was an action packed roller coaster. What I love about Amanda’s writing is that she keeps it real. She shows you a period of history and doesn’t hold back. She shows you the good and the bad, but I also know I can count on her to give me a satisfying ending. With that trust I keep reading as her characters go through so many unexpected trials!

I loved Helena’s passion for healing and how she is a good judge of character. I love how brave she is in several different situations. She’s not easily broken by the hard in life. She’s strong and courageous. She’s the perfect match for Ivan.

Ivan is a warrior very committed to his family. He dreams of his own lands in a season of peace, but isn’t afraid to fight his way to peace by defending his people and those he loves. I loved his grit, his integrity, and how he could be both fierce and gentle.

If you love an action packed adventure with realistic set backs set in a historic time, this is the book for you. I loved that it combined some of my favorite things: history, integrity, and love. A perfect addition to this series.

‘Beyond the Crescent Sky’ is an epic story full of adventure, romance, friendship, action, loyalty faith, and rich history. I was hooked from the start and didn’t want to put the book down once I started reading. It was a beautiful story that did not shy away from the heartbreaks of life.
While the book dealt with some heavy topics, it still felt hopeful, and there were some lighter moments to be found.
Helena and Ivan did not have an easy go of things. Their romance was so sweet, but it was not without pain. They had to be willing to do what was best for their people, even if that meant they put their own feelings and wants aside.
I throughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to see what happens with our beloved characters in the next book.

Beyond the Crescent Sky is the second book in the Balkan Legends Series, set in medieval Serbia during the 1300s. This series has introduced me to a fascinating historical period I hadn't explored much before. I appreciate historical fiction because it allows me to learn while enjoying a good story. A.L. Sowards has gained a reputation for her exceptional writing and thorough research in each of her novels.

The main characters, Serbian Ivan and Greek Helena, are compelling. Their tale unfolds as a forbidden romance filled with conflict and personal sacrifice.

Spanning several years, this engaging novel features realistic battles and war scenes involving the Serbs, Greeks, and the dominating Ottoman Empire. After being captured and injured, Ivan is cared for by Helena. As they spend time together, they develop a deep bond and fight for their freedom and love against the odds. Readers experience a range of emotions as both characters navigate through struggles and losses. Sowards effectively portrays their growth amid tough challenges.

I found this touching novel hard to put down. Beyond the Crescent Sky deserves a five-star rating and is a must-read for history enthusiasts. To fully appreciate the story's emotional depth, it's best to read the earlier books in the series first. This series is nothing short of epic.

Prepare yourself to be swept away by Ms. Soward's newest book, Beyond the Crescent Sky. Her gift for storytelling and meticulous research are the perfect recipe for The Balkan Legends, a monumental series that rivals some of the well-known epics of the past.

In this second book of the series, readers will ride a roller coaster of emotions as Ivan and Helena face several battles that span years, hoping for their happy ending. It chronicles the conflicts between the different ethnic groups that were jostling for power in the region. Spanning years of conflict, battles and sieges, spies and espionage, loyalty and friendships will be tested. Will a united front defeat a common foe?

I found the story to be expertly plotted, riveting and realistic. I really enjoyed reading a book that was set at a point in history that is not common in today's historical fiction. I found the history and author's notes at the end intriguing. Helena and Ivan wound their way into my heart. Their heroic deeds reminiscent of the epic heroes of legend.

Highly recommend for fans of historical fiction.

Content warning- A clean read except for the violence associated with war in the Middle Ages. Several battle scenes.

This beautiful story captured my heart, tore it to shreds, and pieced it back together again.

Maybe that's a bit dramatic, but it fits. This book--this series!--is a thrill RIDE, people. I never thought I'd be so invested in events that happened half a world away from me 650ish years ago. Each book in the Balkan Legends series dives deeper into the fight for Christianity in the middle ages and makes me better appreciate the freedoms and life that I enjoy in the twenty-first century.

The characters are complex, the stakes are high, and the battles are fierce. This was one of those books where I read it a little at a time until I found that I couldn't put it down. Unpredictable, inspirational, and educational all in one. It might be the beginning of January, but this is going to be one of my top reads for 2025!

Thanks to the author for sending me an advanced copy to review. I was not required to post a positive review and all opinions are my own.

Title: Beyond a Crescent Sky
Author: A.L. Sowards
📚
Dear Mrs. Sowards,
Once again, the beauty of your words in this novel left me grappling for my own words, none of which have sufficient strength to adequately express my feelings. Everything about this book was stunning—from the characters, to the setting, to the dangers, intrigue, and stakes. All of it completely floored me and kept me hooked from the first page to the last, though even then I wasn’t sure I wanted it to be over. I could have read another 300 pages. The immersive writing has me feeling as though I were waging battle with an enemy rather than making dinner, or stuck in an enemy prison instead of folding laundry. Your writing is superb and this book may be one of my favorites from you.
Both Helena and Ivan are characters I could easily admire, even if Ivan’s stubbornness kept landing him in trouble. That stubbornness quite possibly kept him alive, so it was needed. I loved Helena’s compassion and wide-lens ability to see others as more than just enemies. I absolutely loved her character arc, as she grew to tentatively then tenaciously trust Ivan. And Ivan. Oh man, but he is good.
The romance in this one is so deliciously sweet. I was brought to tears more than once with the struggles these two had to overcome. But the way they quietly grew in the strength of their bond was exquisitely written. I genuinely could read another entire book of just these two characters.
The triumph at the end is all the sweeter because of the trials forced upon both Ivan and Helena. It’s a powerful story.
As I said before, this may be my favorite book of yours, and it will absolutely be on my reread list. It is an incredible book and a fabulous way to start off my 2025 reading.
Forever your reader,
Jessica

✨BEYOND THE CRESCENT SKY✨

--The Balkans 1383--

Helena is a healer. Ivan is her prisoner. Caught in the crossfire of war, they must choose: loyalty, or love.

Return again to the 1300s where the Serbs continue to find themselves caught in the clutches of the Ottoman Empire surrounded by enemies on all sides. After reading about the young Lord turned Zupan over his people, we get to see his young brother's story, Ivan. Full of deceit and war, Ivan finds himself captive to a Greek nation, where he meets a beautiful healer.

A.L. Sowards is a master of historical fiction. I was absolutely wrecked by this story from beginning to end. I found myself on the edge of my seat in many scenes! The setting and history was wonderfully done and I felt I was taken back in time.

I will always pick up a story with a healer. Fantastic medical detail and I loved the medical history!

But let's get to my favorite part...Ivan and Helena! I adored the romance and relationship build throughout. Talk about melt my heart. Ivan and Helena are perfect. Yes I cried. 🫠🫠🫠

A.L. Sowards took me on an emotional rollercoaster but I have absolutely zero regrets. My favorite book in the series so far, but I have enjoyed the journey.

If you love histfic, I highly recommend picking up an A.L. Sowards book! For this series, start with the novella and read in order. It's an adventure that you have to start at the beginning!

This book releases tomorrow 1/7!! Thank you to @shadowmountainpub and @a.l.sowards

Words have failed me for this one.

I finished the book a week ago and am still thinking bout it and trying to articulate my thoughts!

This book is deep. Deeply emotional, deeply religious, deeply romantic, deeply wonderful. I don’t know that I have ever read a book that is so heart-achingly, emotionally wrenching and loved it so much!

Ivan is a family man that will do anything, including go to war and be a prisoner, to better the lives of his family. He is a man of his word.

Helena is a healer willing to learn from anyone and everyone. When a prisoner on death’s doorstep is brought to her, she doesn’t shirk responsibility, but welcomes the challenge of keeping him alive.

I would be honored to call either a friend! To watch them sacrifice for those they love and put their lives in the hand of God is humbling.

I am not doing justice to the amazingness that is this book! If you need a read with cleansing emotions- this is your sign. If you are even slightly interested, take the time to read this book!

Content: AL Sowards has definitely done her homework on this story and as such, it is historically accurate to the 1300s. It is beautifully handled, however it includes war, death, torture, and experiences of a midwife. If you would like to know more, please feel free to message me!

I received a complimentary copy; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Beyond the Crescent Sky by A.L. Sowards is a gripping historical fiction novel featuring strong characters who face many battles testing their loyalty and their love. This book is set in the late 1300s in Serbia – a time of war, growth, and desire for a better future. Ivan (who we met in book 1) is now grown and preparing to become a Zupan like his brother. His devoted love for his family causes Ivan and his cousin Danilo to seek out his brother and assist in any way that is needed. What they couldn’t have known is that trouble was afoot, leading to the eventual capture of Ivan.

Helena is a midwife with strong loyal ties to her family/people as well. She is tasked to care for Ivan after his capture and through her expertise, is able to begin to heal Ivan’s physical ailments. What she wasn’t prepared for was the way they both healed each other’s hearts through this tumultuous time.

I really enjoyed this book! As a nurse (with over a decade of experience in labor and delivery) I found Helena’s story fascinating. I related to her on so many levels – through her triumphs and trials, and that made this book even more endearing for me to read. Ivan is everything I would want in a warrior/leader and I love his teasing relationship with Danilo, as well as his love for Helena and his people. There is a glossary of terms and characters, as well as a map included that made it helpful for me to keep everything straight and more detailed as I read.

Things to enjoy:
Dual POV
Banter and teasing
Swoony romance
“I will not escape”
Plot twists – Iskandar (grrr!)
Page turning adventure – hard to put down!
Vivid battle scenes – I felt like I was there helping plan and defeat the enemy

I highly recommend reading Beyond the Crescent Sky! It is book 2 of the Balkan Legends series and I would recommend you read the books in order to understand the storyline better.

CW: (from the publisher) “mild violence: meaning a tasteful minimally graphic handling of war, pillage, and childbirth.”

You Guys. This Balkan Legends series is potent. I suggest reading the Prequel: After the Crescent Strike and book one: Beneath A Crescent Shadow to get the full scope and magnitude of this series. If you love epic battles, a romance that extends through time and trial, and the faith to fight for freedom. You will love this series.

“Manhood is defined by action, not by age.”

Ivan. Man does he go through so much. He is the best of the best and the loyalty of his cousin Danilo was second to none. Ivan has had to work hard his whole life, stricken with illness in his youth, imprisoned and treated horribly, becoming a hostage right after being released, and his love taken from him in the most unfair of ways. Every time he was beaten down. He NEVER lost his faith. He persevered and oh what a sweet reward.

“All is well now. They cannot hurt you anymore.”

Helena: a midwife apprentice, is the only one left to care for the wounded and so she brings Ivan back from the clutches of death by the wounds he received in battle. As a prisoner and enemy of her people she is wary of him, but she soon finds his goodness and respectfulness unparalleled. Their love grows, but circumstances change faster than quicksand during this time.

“You would fit well in my dream, Kyria Helena.”

If anyone deserved a HEA it was Helena and Ivan. Their love was tested time and time again.

✨My Favorite Quote: “I was mistaken, my lady.” Ivan sounded as out of breath as she was. “One kiss such as that could never be enough, for it is a wonder that leaves me wanting ever more.”

✨Content: centered around wartime so there are many battles and deaths, imprisonment and physical abuse. But none too descriptive. Tactfully written and revealed what it would have been like. Many births and the danger of taking on that task durning that time period. Forced marriage.

Thank you Amanda for this wonderfully epic read! Loved it a thousand times over. I’m so excited for Danilo’s story!

This is one of those stories that will stay with me forever. This was heartbreakingly beautiful. After I finished this book I just had to sit and process all the things I was feeling. Seriously it was quite the emotional roller coaster.
I don’t know if there are two people more suited for each other than Ivan and Helena. Ivan finds himself wounded and a prisoner after a battle between the Serbs and the Greeks. Helena is the healer in charge of his care. It is important for Ivan to heal and get better so they can exchange him for their own prisoners, that means he has to stay with the Greeks through the whole winter.
I wish all FMC could be written like Helena. She is kind, compassionate, strong and nurturing. She stands up for what she believes in and truly cares for people.
I do feel like there are some heavier and more emotional parts of this book that are talked about with the most respect while still letting the reader know of the challenges the characters are facing.
If you are looking for a historical fiction book with all the emotions this is seriously such an incredible story.

Oh My Goodness!! This book was intriguing, engaging, heartbreaking, and heartwarming. I didn’t know how everything was going to turn out and I could not put it down. Beyond the Crescent Sky is the second book in A.L. Sowards’ Balkan Legends series.
I loved the growth of the characters, they had been through so much and yet they learned to be strong. I felt for both Ivan and Helena as they faced their trials head on. I was drawn to both of them from the beginning and I loved how their kindness and honor shone through amidst the struggles of war and enemies.
The story was engaging and I did not know how it was going to end. I despised the “bad” guy and was rooting for Ivan and Helena. They had a rough start but they came to be friends as Helena cared for Ivan. I liked how Ivan was honorable and faithful, he would fight for those he loved. Helena was sweet and yet she was strong. She stood up for what she believed and tried not to allow others to sway her.
The story was at times sad and yet it fit the book. These characters were fighting for their freedom and land, there were many battles fought. I really liked Danilo and I am so excited to see that he is getting his own book. It was also cool to meet some new characters and see their growth too.
I would definitely recommend Beyond the Crescent Sky! It was a lovely book with characters that drew you in. I know that the next book is going to be amazing. Beyond the Crescent Sky is a historical romance.

This is the second book in The Balkan Legends series - and it was JUST as good as the first. Sowards writing and level of research is always incredible, and I love the way her books make me feel. There’s so much depth to her stories that pulls you in so hard, it becomes emotional.

This is the story of Ivan and Helene, set in The Balkans in the late 1300s. Helene is a healer and midwife who finds herself having to care for Ivan who is a prisoner. They develop a bond and a level of trust that will test their alliances to their own people… and potentially mark them as traitors. The Greeks want to keep Ivan as a prisoner until they can exchange him to get their people back from the Serbs. But in war, nothing goes as planned, and few people can be trusted.

Helene and Ivan have to make gut wrenching decisions throughout this book. The desperation involved, and the amount of selflessness they had for their own people ripped out my heart multiple times. Ivan is one of my favorite male characters now. He is so strong, selfless, and just a good human being. The way he stays true to himself and his faith here… just incredible. Yes, I cried. And gasped. 💔

A love story set among war, action, and politics … this book was truly amazing. I am so excited for book 3 this summer!!

• Early Historical Fiction
• Clean, sweet romance
• Desperate situations
• Love conquers all
• Action/war situations

Thank you @a.l.sowards for this book in exchange for my honest opinion.💫

Beyond the Crescent sky is the second book in the Balkan Legends Series and in my opinion just as good if not better than the first book. It isn’t necessary to read the books in order, but I would highly recommend it. This book is about Ivan who is the Zupan Konstantin’s younger brother. He is just a young man of 19, but has been trained and guided to inherit his grandfather’s title, Zupa of Sivi Gora. Ivan is an extremely strong willed and impetuous young man. But when he is captured and held hostage, he learns quickly how to become a strategic warrior. During his time of captivity, he is cared for by a beautiful, compassionate young woman by the name of Helena. This book is the tender love story of two people that overcome war, trials, and tribulation's. Can their love survive years of separation of torture and vileness. This story is alive with drama, strife, and suffering. There are many wounded and dying battle scenes, woman and children accosted and horses maimed. But the wonder of this book is the compassion, selflessness and fortitude to uphold the legacy, birthright and security of their people. It is a historical fiction based on true conflicts and events. It is a gripping drama with a touching love story. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Wow. Just wow. This beautiful historic novel was so epic, lovely, and also incredibly heart-rending. Whew! Once you start this book, be prepared to not want to put it down. My family can tell you that I was antsy all during dinner the evening I was reading the last half of the book.

Sowards continues to astound me with her masterful storytelling and incredible attention to historic detail. I love how she can make the world in this time period come alive. Her characters are so deep and genuine; I was rooting for Helena and Ivan from the very first pages. This book was a rollercoaster of heartfelt moments and white knuckles, and definitely worth the ride. So beautiful! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Triggers: descriptions of caring for wounds and childbirth. Some detail, but not graphic.
Mistreatment of women.
Descriptions of battle.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author, and all opinions are my own.
