The innocent young Indian girl Falling Water finds the wounded Rayne Freeman by the river, and their passionate relationship forces him to choose between betraying his duty or the woman he loves
In 1978, Sylvie Sommerfield's husband challenged her to write a "better" romance novel, than the ones she eagerly devoured. She accepted the challenge. And now the six-time grandmother has written many historical romance novels, which have sold into the millions of copies.
In fact, John Sommerfield had to retire from his successful career as an investment funds manager to run the business side of Sylvie F. Sommerfield Enterprises.
Some of her books, with western themes, all published by Zebra, include Moonlit Magic, Tame My Wild Heart, Captive Embrace, Savage Rapture, Savage Kiss, Wild Wyoming Heart and Autumn Dove.
This review is of “Savage Kiss”, #2 in the “Savage” series by Sylvie F. Sommerfield.
The book begins in Washington, D.C. circa 1848, It is here that two men are making nefarious plans. One, Colonel John Chivington, is doing so because he hates Indians. The other, Martin Preston, has more personal reasons for his part in the plan.
In another part of D.C., three men make plans to head west. They are: Rayne Freeman, the hero of the book and a trapper, Mackenzie Weaver, a fellow trapper, and Thomas Preston, Martin’s son, who has no idea of his father’s plans.
When the three men get near a Cheyenne Indian village in Wyoming, they are ambushed. Rayne and Mack are left for dead, and Thomas is abducted. (This attack is part 1 of the Chivington/Martin Preston plan). The two men are nursed back to health in part by Falling Water, a half-Cheyenne maiden and the heroine of the book. Falling Water and Rayne fall in love, but she feels he’s keeping secrets from her (He is). We later learn what happened to Thomas and about Martin and Chivington’s plans. (Thomas is very much alive and, once he discovers how evil his father is, works with a network of people to thwart Martin and Chivington’s scheme).
Back in Wyoming, meanwhile, Falling Water and Rayne become lovers and eventually marry after her father, Running Wolf, grants permission for them to do so. They are happy together. However, there are major storm clouds on the horizon.
Chivington becomes commander of a fort near the Cheyenne village. Martin kills Alexander Brent, who co-owns the land where the Cheyenne live, leaving only one person between Martin, Chivington, and their evil goals: Lauren Brent, aka Summer Rain, Falling Water’s mother, who co-owns the valley with her father. This dovetails into the next aspects of the Chivington/Martin plan: kidnap Falling Water and Lone Star, daughter of village chief White Eagle, in an effort to force Lauren to sign over the land to them. The kidnappings occur, but both women are rescued: Lone Star by Little Eagle, son of Sun Knife, the village medicine man, and his wife Snow Blossom; and Falling Water by Rayne.
Chivington and Martin show up in the village to blackmail Lauren, thinking they have the upper hand, unaware that their captives have been freed. Once they realize this, they try to kill everyone in the village, but are killed themselves, leaving Falling Water, Rayne and the others to have their Happily Ever After.
Upside: “Savage Kiss” is somewhat misnamed. It is a gentle, semi-sweet book (there ae sex scenes, between Falling Water and Rayne) with nice characters. In addition to Falling Water and Rayne, other couples find love as well.
Downside: Most of the characters are nice, but not deep nor terribly interesting. The ending lacks excitement (or maybe I’ve just read too many E.J. Hunter books!).
Sex: Multiple love scenes involving Falling Water and Rayne. They are neither graphic nor erotic. Violence: There are scenes of abduction, attempted rape, killing. The violence is not graphic. Bottom Line: “Savage Kiss” is a perfectly nice book. Not great, but pretty good.
I have read this book more than twenty years ago but the book got lost and i want to have a copy of it. This book, along with Disney's Pocahontas and Red Dead Redemption 2, timeported/teleported me to the wild west during 1800's.
