The manga is very relaxing to read because of its soothing art style, its slow-paced and realistic storytelling, and its relatable and likable characters. The manga does not rely on clichés or tropes, but rather explores the genuine emotions and struggles of the protagonists as they deal with their insomnia, their family issues, and their growing affection for each other. The manga also showcases the beauty of the night sky and the wonders of astronomy, which adds a sense of wonder and awe to the story.

Insomniacs After School is a manga that can make you laugh, cry, and smile with its heartwarming and captivating story. It is a manga that can help you relax and appreciate the simple joys of life. If you are looking for a manga that can make you feel good and inspire you to learn more about the stars, then Insomniacs After School is a manga for you.

While a truly excellent volume of this series brings the house down, there’s a ton of merit to be found in quieter volumes like this one. There aren’t as many of the big moments this instalment, but I love the quiet in this story so very much.

The ending chapters in particular, when Magari has had another prolonged absence from school because of her heart, are incredibly well done. They manage to be fun and poignant and romantic in a single go.

I adored the storytelling in this section, which frames her long absence as a series of vignettes as Ganta comes to visit her every day. This is very similar to the vignettes I like so much in Frieren, although they talk more here.

They flirt, they goof off, they fight after Ganta says something especially thoughtless in a moment of teenage boy stupidity. It’s a fantastic segment, capped off by a birthday celebration that carries a hint of melancholy underneath it all.

Between the moment where they plan for an event 14 years from now and the latest bout of absenteeism, you can see the writing on the wall all over the place. Yet, like Ganta, there’s something that keeps me hopeful (or, possibly, in denial of reality).

That image of Magari sleeping with her head in his lap while he reads a book on cardiology won’t leave me any time soon.

This is such a lovingly visual story - it gets a lot of mileage from silence and some of the ways it frames Ganta’s photography or the adventures of our two leads are stunning. That train car just makes that one scene come to life.

The other storylines are also pretty good - somebody gets their heart trampled on in one and in another a boy is very stupid about being nice to a girl he likes. They’re fine; not why I am here, but they make a welcome break now and then.

4.5 stars - probably not a full five, but the endless creativity at play in that last part just won me over. Not that I needed it; I have such a soft spot for this series.

Makoto Ojirio has my whole heart with this series. This volume was a little quieter and slower than the last 2. There was a beautiful sequence of finding just the right spot to get some overnight photos and hiding out in an old train car. They throw a very successful meteor watching party that is better attended than their Sensei anticipated. We get to spend more time with some of their friends outside of just their relationships with Magari and Nakami. Magari's illness takes her out of school for quite a while and it's the most concerned we've seen anyone for her. This volume ends on her birthday, but it's a low note because of the illness.

Beautifully told, beautifully illustrated, just a perfect book cover to cover.

Not a lot happens in this volume, but it's sweet and light. I like the interactions between Anamizu and Haida.

I have blasted through all the available books in this series in two days so this is a generic, overall (spoiler free) review of the series.

I have never really enjoyed manga preferring books, light novels and anime but the first 2 episodes of this show caught my eye so I decided to try it and I am very glad I did.

I have found the manga to be easy to follow and enjoyable so far (up to book 9).

I was worried this was going to be another story that goes no where and stagnates but I feel fairly confident now in saying this series has a set plot path and destination and there was more story development in the first 4 books than most Japanese media I have read/ seen have in their entire series.
The two MCs are interesting with you learning about them as they learn about each other - what feels mostly natural and a good pace. The story has been really good - exactly what I was hoping for more. The side characters feel like they're actually there and real people and also have their own small plots going on (I find some stories have side characters because they have to but with minimal effort put into them where this is not the case here). The art work is really nice and I've never had an interest in photography before but all of a sudden I find myself wishing my camera phone was a lot more camera: The story draws you in and makes you interested.

There's no fan service, no repetition or bad jokes, the story doesn't feel forced or slowed down (to please the readers or the publishers), the scenes, settings relationships and plot feels realistic and it's all well told and well drawn.
If this series keeps going as well as it is then it could take over as my favourite story in the light novel, anime, manga area for me.
All in all I would recommend this to anyone who has an interest in slice of life/ romance.

I just know this series is gonna kill me by the end.

Insomniacs After School, Volume 9 continues the poignant story of Ganta Nakami and Isaki Magari, two insomniac high school students finding solace under the stars.

The volume follows their astronomy club's activities, from planning a Geminid meteor shower party to a photography trip to Noto, both of which face unexpected disruptions. Amidst these events, the story delves into deeply personal moments like Magari's birthday and hopes for a snowy Christmas.

This volume excels with silent pages that powerfully convey the pain both characters endure. Magari's worsening illness is depicted with heartbreaking realism, making quiet moments of connection, like their holding hands at the end, incredibly moving. It's a truly excellent volume that masterfully blends youthful struggles with the comforting vastness of the night sky.

The weather is getting colder and the nights are getting longer… but that just means more time for the astrophotography night owls!

Ganta and Magari go on some more photo trips even as they plan new events like a star viewing party… or a birthday. But as we’re getting into the back half of this series, I can’t help but worry that the good times are about to come to an end.

This series has 14 volumes.

Also yet again showing: "Nothing ventured, nothing gained"

Though I continue to enjoy the series, I feel like it is edging bit by bit more towards a potential tragic teenage romance, in opposition to the laid-back, adorkable slice-of-life story I enjoyed from the start.

3.5⭐️Very very ominous~~ also idk if it’s because of my mindset while reading but i feel like the past few books has been fluff and day-to-day events to the characters. so i hope what this ones teasing is gonna come to fruition!

I love how they focus on the friendships between the two boys and the group of girls, as well as their friend’s relationships too… so wholesome, they’re all so sweet to each other (how it should be forever and ever)
