DEFIANT TO THE LAST Kathryn McLeod's heart sank as she watched the horsemen approach Edinburgh with their banners flying and sunlight glinting off their armor. The war which had torn Scotland asunder was over --- and the despised James IV now ruled. The auburn-haired beauty braced herself for the worst, for her family could expect no mercy from the usurper. But nothing could have prepared her for Donovan McAdam. The handsome knight had conquered her beloved city --- now he claimed her as his prisoner as well. And though she vowed to remain defiant to the last, she saw in his eyes the intent to possess her, and she couldn't suppress the shameful tingle of anticipation that swept through her traitorous flesh.
ARROGANT FROM THE FIRST Donovan wanted Kathryn from the first moment he saw her standing proudly before him, her green eyes flashing with fury. He intended to marry her --- but she did not need to know that just yet. First he would tame her, then he would make her his willing bride. He would humble her with her own heart's yearnings, conquer her with her own sweet passions, until she no longer wished to escape his bed. Then, and only then, would he pledge to share his life --- and his love --- forevermore.
In 1978, Sylvie Sommerfield's husband challenged her to write a "better" romance novel, than the ones she eagerly devoured. She accepted the challenge. And now the six-time grandmother has written many historical romance novels, which have sold into the millions of copies.
In fact, John Sommerfield had to retire from his successful career as an investment funds manager to run the business side of Sylvie F. Sommerfield Enterprises.
Some of her books, with western themes, all published by Zebra, include Moonlit Magic, Tame My Wild Heart, Captive Embrace, Savage Rapture, Savage Kiss, Wild Wyoming Heart and Autumn Dove.
Read; 7/26/23 DNF page q121 This book can't hold my attention. I'm constantly stopping. I lm just not motivated to continue. Hopefully, I feel different later on.
Kathryn (our heroine) and her sister, Anne (sub-plot) are in a fix. Their brother was on the wrong side of the war in Scotland and the whole family is paying the price for their brother's loyalty to the old king (the new king's father BTW). Kathryn is forced into marriage with our hero, Donovan. The book might have been 4 stars if we didn't have to listen to Kathryn bemoan the fact that Dovovan doesn't love her, and Donovan bemoan the fact that he doesn't want to love because that will give Kathryn power over him...over and over and over again. These are two stubborn people who do their best to destroy what they both really want, a loving relationship.
Meanwhile Andrew loves Anne but is posing as a servant in their household. Between that and his mission he is hardpressed to court Anne but love prevails anyway. Andrew is an English spy whose mission is to expose a plot against the new king thus making for good relations between England and Scotland.
I really liked our sub-plot hero, Andrew, and heroine, Anne. I didn't particularly like our main H/h who both whine through the whole book, mistakingly think the other is cheating on them, and who, although enamored with each others' looks (also said every two pages) are nasty to each other and not in a fun way to read.
They do have great sex which you would think would make them try to work things out.
Fires of Surrender by Sylvie F. Sommerfield (1990) set in Scotland during the late 1400s, is about two HEAs .. two sisters, one who marries against her will and the other who has to hide her love for an Englishman. Lots of enemies to lovers scenes for the main couple.., so no romance until the very end. Palace intrigue as James IV ascends the the throne after the murder of his father does add an interesting historical touch. Did I like the book? Not terribly.., way too much fighting and arguing between the MCs for me.
