I was fortunate enough to receive this as an ARC. Thank you to Abbey and the team.
Ok I'm going to be very honest here: I'm an idiot. I genuinely thought I had read the second book of this trilogy, and even though the author kindly provides a summary of the journey so far at the start of this book, I proudly skipped through that because I naively thought I knew it all. Upon my realisation, I was so thankful for the short summary but am kicking myself for diving into this without experiencing the entire ride.
So here we go.
After escaping the castle where Arkimedes' memory was altered and Nava was nearly killed by an Ark-lookalike demon, Ark, Nava and newly enemy turned comrade Devon find shelter in a safe house. The trio establish that the Ark-twin is immortal, and must work together to find artefacts that can defeat the enemy, but not without near death experiences. In doing so, they uncover the truth behind Ark's family ties and the mysterious Ark twin, and venture on a quest to destroy him before he torches the forrest and kingdom.
Nava and Ark are also confronted by the ghost of Ark's deceased mother, and let me be the first to tell you that jesus lordy those scenes scared the pants off me. This whole book is much darker than the rest of the series, and I'm not going to admit how many nights I was too scared to go to sleep in case ghost mummy haunted me.
Anyway, there are parts in the story that seemed to be insignificant to the plot, but they weave into the story and become important later, which I always appreciate.
For me, this had the perfect balance of fantasy, romance, a little political flare and tension. I also liked the tension of never knowing which characters to trust (and maybe I still don't trust Devon).
There are so many elements and layers to this book and series that I know I'll be rereading multiple times to fully appreciate. Overall, an amazing ending to a trilogy for an indie author!
