If something appears to be too good to be true, it usually is.

‘I’ve read 17 books so far this year and this is hands down my favourite fucking read. Oh my god.” – Early reviewer.

When an invitation to The Emerald Resort lands on the floor of five unsuspecting competition winners, they can all barely believe their luck. Five different people. Five different backgrounds. Five people needing escape.

Maisie Watson, a university student. Jack Paterson, an ex-Marine with PTSD, Graham Anderson, a council worker with a deadly secret, Esme Duncan, a gold digging maneater and Ailsa Clark, a young schoolteacher. The only details – they’re catching a private flight to the Isle of Harris, with its golden sands and idyllic landscape, they’re going to have the time of their lives.

When the group of five are thrown into a despicable realm of torture at the hands of The Stranger, what will it take to survive when they’re tested beyond anything they’ve ever experienced before.

EXTREME HORROR: Contains scenes of graphic violence. Reader discretion advised.

3.5 stars. This was my first read from YM Miller. It’s violent and sadistic and everything you’d want to see in a good horror story. The star was the writing itself. The word choices, general flow, atmosphere, all of it just made me fall in love with the author’s clear abilities as a wordsmith. I even didn’t mind the long initial portion of the book where a bunch of characters are introduced. Honestly, there was tons to like here. Unfortunately, I really didn’t care much for the story itself. There was a lot of creativity and you can tell how invested the author was in creating this book. But I am not a fan of certain subgenres, in this case body horror. Don’t get me wrong, it has a place in the overarching genre and I enjoy a good dissection here and there. But, almost every time, authors get lost in the torture and forget the story, which kills the entire experience. This avoided that pitfall, but the entire plot was still extremely comparable to any Saw film. And that type of concept has been done to death time and time again. Fans of that type of premise will eat this up, but it wasn’t for me. Again, though, the characters and details were solid, the writing was top notch, the gore was sublime, but that plot just didn’t do it for me.

Phew! Now that was one brutal ride.
A little slow to start with while finding out about "The Strangers" victims, but I do understand why it needed to be explained who they were and what their so called "crime" had been.
Then it took off like a Harrier Jet with no way of stopping it and Wow was it gory.
It became fast paced and incredibly gruesome with a lot a hardcore torture...It gave a whole new meaning to "Being Rat Arsed" 🐀🐀🐀🐀
A good storyline with plenty of horror that kept me interested until the end, which was an unexpected finish to the book.
Y.M. Miller will be an author that I will be checking out in the future

Is this the unreleased 3rd part of the Hostel franchise? That film literally was the first thing I thought about after reading the torture scenes. Not sure if that was a good thing, though.

It was OK. The kills were creative and brutal. Hell, I ain't even gonna talk about Ailsa Clark. No way. Let's not go that route. Y.M. Miller's ink is probably dipped in blood because that method was beyond stygian. Bottle + barbed wire. Ugh. Scratch that. I don't even wanna think about it anymore. I'd like to stay sane, please.

Gore. Blood. Defecation. Rats. Mangled bodies. Hysterectomy. All the awful things you could think of are all in this book. Enjoy the carnage, you crazies.

I was given the honor and privilege of being able to beta read this incredible piece of work. This extreme horror offers EVERYTHING you could possibly want and more. Incredible plot, amazing characters, gore, emotions etc. && for those who are uncomfortable with anything animal / child related in horror, this one is for you too!! While there are some heavy TW, those aren’t two of them!

As for plot… think the dark web meets saw meets an ✨all inclusive resort.✨

Do yourself a favor and make sure to throw this on the top of your TBR!!

Where do I begin? My favorite part was the description of the characters, I think it was quite interesting to learn more about them. Also the deaths are really good.

Even so, I feel like everything happens so quickly (especially the ending). Even so, I'm glad to know the identity of The Stranger and that plot twist that, to be honest, I didn't expect.

Woaw, this was truly amazing! I loved it! Gripped me from the first few sentences in the prologue and didn’t let go. The character introductions we’re perfect, giving you just enough information and then blam! Into the madness.
This is gory. Torture porn, but with class. Do yourself a favour and check it out! You won’t regret it!

Games and torture?? Count me in! This book was beautifully disgusting and such a fun read! We get to follow 5 people with different pasts that wins a trip to a luxurious spa out on a secluded island. What they don't know is that they have all been hand picked by The stranger to participate in his games, and they will in fact not get the spa treatment they were hoping for.

I really loved this read, it's quick, fast paced, bloody and disturbing in all the best ways. This gave me major fantasy island meets hostel vibes. The introduction to each character was just perfect and then right in with the gore. MORE PLEASE!

5 people receive a letter in the mall that they won a trip to this island, but they have no idea who it is from. They all end up going to this island and well it’s not exactly how they pictured it. It’s a game of survival.
This book put me in mind of saw a little bit. It wasn’t a bad book.

A fast and fun gore fest that fans of Saw should love.
The first kill was pretty awesome, and is guaranteed to make men wince. The ball bearings kill was also horribly cool.
I liked this very. 😊

Gory but predictable storytelling. I am happy for that ending which is rarely gotten. Those torture scenes were intense.

Well... this definitely had some creative death scenes in it. The first 30% is a little slow just because you are getting to know who all the players are. But once they land on the island resort... it all happens very quickly! There was no wasting time. This story is the baby of Rob Zombies 31 and Saw. Only, these players aren't given a chance to live or not, its just a matter of how they die chosen by millionaires who like the idea of snuff films but ...LIVE.

There are a few twists that I didn't see coming but made me happy. Overall, I enjoyed the story, would have liked a little more of the gore, maybe some torture before the main event that is chosen to kill them. But, it was enjoyable and did exactly what the title says.

I absolutely loved the concept of this. it reminded me of the movie 'Dark Game' but this book was way better imo.
The descriptions absolutely sent me. Lots of gore and torture so if that's not your thing I wouldn't read this.

You’re Going To Die Here by @thecoycaterpillarreads
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

5 people (Maisie, Esme, Graham, Ailsa and Jack) receive an invitation in the post to a so weekend off the mainland. Most of them are down on their luck and so they all take up the ominous offer, unfortunately some decisions can be deadly….

❤️ anything dark web-ish is right up my street so I loved the theme!
❤️ if you like the films Saw and Hostel this one is for you
❤️ the gore and torture, omg it was never ending and some of the ‘games’ were fairly original…
❤️ I loved that we got to know the characters and their flaws, it made the story make sense
❤️ check the trigger warnings for this one, other than animals and kids…it’s got it all!

Overall, a very enjoyable read and my first by @thecoycaterpillarreads - thank you so much for the ARC 🤗😍

First and foremost, this novella is NOT for the faint of heart, so check those trigger warnings if you are one for that sort of thing.

Beware invitations from the Emerald Retreat, because although the idea seems nice, you might not make it out alive!

I went into this blind and I'm absolutely so glad that I did! Y. M. Miller has crafted a villain more terrifying than you could ever imagine. The Stranger is going to cause me nightmares for months to come! Check this story out, you'll thank me (or curse me) later!

The star is for the prologue. But, the prologue made promises that the rest of the book couldn't keep.

Poorly written and predictable. There was no world building... no character development. No real story at all. Just fragments for a potential story. There were a lot of misused words and way too much repetition for such a short piece of work.

The torture and gore parts were not very descriptive or creative. They were quite anticlimactic. But, ymmv with this. I might just be completely desensitized to it at this point.

Overall, it just wasn't good.

When you start your book off with peen mutilation, you instantly have my attention!

I read this book because a lot of people were comparing it to Saw and the cover is just fkin amazing. As a huge fan of SAW, I have to agree. This book was so much fun. The kills are creative and bloody, and some are heartbreaking due to you getting to learn about each character. I highly recommend it!

The rat scene will stay in my mind forever alongside the ball-bearing scene.

I'm upset I didn't like this one. It had a great premise, but the one dimensional characters, poor editing and inane writing blew it. The book itself gave off Saw vibes which is why I was initially invested until it turned into a bit of a snooze fest. The deaths were unoriginal and bland. For extreme horror lovers I would not recommend this at all.

This is a quick, brutal read that heavily draws from Saw and Hostel. I did find the writing to take me out of the story at times and the story felt a bit rushed, but the torture scenes are really well written. Miller does not hold back, and the ideas are pretty creative. Barbed wire? Oof, that scene was intense!

Kinda reminded me a bit of hostel, like a modern day version mixed with a bit of squid games. Fun read, if that’s the right word haha. Not the most intense horror / splatter punk I’ve ever read but depends on your reading taste I suppose

You’re going to die here 👏🏼

I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed with this, YM is always my auto buy when it comes to extreme horror/splatterpunk 🙌🏼

She gives you just the right amount of backstory before the ultimate kick off 🩸

This has me wincing, gagging, checking to see if my mouth was still there & closing my legs tight for a solid couple of minutes all at once 🤣

Think being in an arena, being brutally tortured whilst everyone is watching you behind glass, cheering it on….yeah 😳

It was absolutely savage but bloody amazing 👏🏼

Loved it, 4.5🌟 please CHECK YOUR TRIGGERS for the love of god 😱🤎

Five strangers, each with a secret or a an addiction invited for a five day luxury spa break in paradise. All expenses paid, sounds too good to be true doesn’t it?
Their host is a man of particular tastes and he plans on feasting!

A cacophony of cruelty played out in a place of depraved decadence. This is so good with elements of Saw but with added bite! The characters are a mix of selfish and self absorbed drowning in self pity, it is why none of them find the invitation strange, they are all so “poor me” they jump at the chance. Maisie the bulimic uni student, Jack the injured military man, Esme the gold digger, Graham the hit and run driver and Ailsa the depressed school teacher. Not forgetting the first chapter star, Tommy!

The opening chapter made me gasp and chuckle, such dark humour interlaced with real horror at the visual imagery, this is a taster of what’s to come and it never lets up. The deaths are explicit and gruesome, the way they are depicted and cleaned up is stark and clinical. The host known as “The Stranger” is sick and twisted, his delight in the game is shockingly childlike and joyful.

Check content warnings but if you, like me, love a juicy torture horror wrapped up in a fantastic story you will love this, it is so bloody good!

Notes From a Decaying Millennial:
Prior to Reading this book, I had thought to myself "hmm I wonder If i can find some Scottish Horror to read", that same day I stumbled upon Y.M. Miller on IG. It's funny how these things work out sometimes. Scottish voices in the world of Indie Horror fiction is something i am here for 24/7.

Y.M. Miller generously offered to send me an ARC of this novella, so that I may post an honest review.

THIS IS NOT A PAID REVIEW
-
If you, like me, are new to the writings of author Y.M. Miller, then permit me to ask you a few questions:
1. Are you down to read Fiction depicting the horror's of late stage capitalism, and the ghouls who revel in it?
2. Did you enjoy films such as SAW, The Menu, and Hostile?
3. Are you a fan of Ed Piskor's RED ROOM extreme horror comics?
-
I'm going to assume that you answered yes to at least one of the above questions.
Well then, buckle up FannyBaws, because You're Going to Die Here is right up your alley. However, be warned, the story will dig its hooks into you and not let go until the blood infused end.

Part of the draw(dare I say fun?) of Extreme Horror and Splatterpunk, is seeing the creative lengths authors will go to craft real danger and ultimately demise of their characters. Some works simply use the genre as a vehicle to setup and butcher extremely simple characters. Miller isn't going that route. YGTDH is populated with whole, fleshed out people. Damaged, yes. knowingly vile? In many cases yes. Like Piskor's Red Room , YGTDH showcases some brutal, and very ingenious acts of torture and brutality. Miller successfully ties the reader to scene, not only can we not turn away from each grisly act, we know the victims' thoughts, their feelings. I verbally let out a few "oh sh*"s throughout the novella. In some instances, as harsh as it is, you may find yourself cheering on their demise. In other scenes, you'll be rooting for the victim to power through, towards some unknown, sweet revenge.

As an aside, but worthy of note:
Scotland and its geography, both physical and psychological, are small but critical part of this book.
Years back I lived in Scotland for a time, and attended grad school there. You could say a mental imprint was left on me. I "whooped" when Being able to vividly recall locations mentioned in the book. It added a texture to the story, making it more visceral.

I am aware that Y.M. Miller is currently working on their next piece of writing, I look forward to reading it.

You're Going to Die Here is a gore-soaked story about five strangers who are randomly invited to a resort, only to be picked off one by one in incredibly inventive ways.

Miller definitely delivers on the extreme aspect! It doesn't take long after arrival at the resort for things to descend into utter depravity and madness. A man, dubbed 'The Stranger', has contrived extremely painful ways for each of his five chosen to die, and these scenes are described in exacting detail. There was a point where I took a very short break to settle myself from a scene that was personally horrific to me, and that visceral response is a huge credit to Miller as a writer!

However, I didn't feel like there was enough development in this story for me to be completely into it. It's not really clear how these five people in particular were chosen for this experience, and the characters didn't feel fleshed out beyond being people that horrible things happen to. I found myself really wanting that character development so I could get that gut punch when something happened, but it just wasn't there. I also thought that the beginning got a little repetitive since I read the same letter four times before we started getting to the action.

All in all, if you're looking for an extreme horror that will make you wonder what in God's name you just read, this one is your story! If you're like me and want a bit more meat (pun totally intended) to your gore, you might not get everything out of this that you're hoping for.

Thank you to the author for giving me an early look at this!
