In the hierarchy of magical beings witches reign supreme. Unlike trolls who need rocks to cast their spells or mermaids who require water to mutter enchantments, witches pull their power from within themselves, needing no external conduits to work their charms. But what makes witches so powerful is also what makes them so attractive to the wicked one who wants to see magic eradicated, The Inquisitor. And there’s one witch he craves above all others, one witch who centuries ago almost beat him, one witch whose powers he’s vowed to take for his own. Except finding his prey won’t be an easy task. His formidable enemy has hidden herself from him, severing emotions and ties to her past, wiping away memories to keep herself and her powers from being found and captured…

Magic didn't exist in Elisabeth Buchanan's world. Long ago she put
away fairy tales and wishes to concentrate on getting into a good
college and hanging out with her boyfriend, Ryan. That all changes
the night she's attacked by a deranged wood sprite and uncovers the
magic flowing through her veins. Now, with her powers unearthed and
hidden truths slithering to the surface, Elisabeth is shipped off to
Cobblestone Academy, a school for supernatural beings where she'll,
hopefully, learn to master her magic.

Soon after arriving at the academy, Elisabeth discovers there are
problems in the enchanted underground she's been thrust into. There's
a war raging, a deadly battle between magic and the Inquisitor. Not only does the
Inquisitor have an army rivaling those of most nations, but magical
beings have inexplicably been turning to his side in massive numbers.
Those turned are called zombies; there's no explanation for their
change and no way to bring them back.

But not all hope is lost. There's a legend passed down through the
centuries of one witch who almost beat the Inquisitor, one witch whose
powers could surpass them all, one witch who would someday be reborn.
To Elisabeth the tale doesn't mean much, until she discovers she bears
a striking resemblance to this renowned enchantress and her newly
discovered magic is terrifyingly strong. As she and her new friends
begin to dig into the past, they come to realize that the ability to
banish the growing nightmare from their world may rest in Elisabeth's
fragile hands.

This book is pretty well written but is so slow at the beginning and part of the middle. If you stick with it, it starts to pick up speed. Elisabeth is ok, she doesn't irritate. Ryan is eh sweet but a high school boyfriend. Brendan is mysterious. I like Ashley and Tyler. The dreams Lis has are a little too obscure. I wish there was something more finite she learns from them. Gabriella seems kewl, can't wait to hear more of her story. On to book 2!
