The Perfect Game #4

TOG: Alternate Cover

Rate this book
From NEW YORK TIMES best-selling author J. Sterling, we dive headfirst back into the epic love story that started it all, The Perfect Game, but this time from Dean Carter’s point of view.

Freshman Dean Carter is the younger brother of campus hotshot Jack. Abandoned by their parents when they were young, Dean and Jack have a bond that most brothers only wish for. As Jack follows his dream of becoming a professional baseball player, he falls in love along the way with aspiring photographer Cassie Andrews. We see Jack get the girl—then lose the girl—and we follow his painful journey through it all via the eyes of his adoring younger brother, Dean.

With never-before-seen scenes and fresh new dialogue, Dean’s point of view is an emotional journey through relationships and the trials that test them. This isn’t the same old love story…but you will still fall. Let the gang steal your heart all over again in The Other Game.

I was seriously looking forward to Dean and Melissa's book and then all my hopes were dashed when I found out that this book is just a retelling of The Perfect Game but from Dean's POV. ~Sigh~

Frustrated but hopeful, I decide to continue and I'm happy I did. I enjoyed getting Dean's perspective and the little moments between him and Melissa were all that sweeter.

I was also happy to get more scenes between Dean and Jack and see how close they really are. I loved how they were always looking out for each other.

description

And I can't leave out the cuteness that is Dean and Cassie's relationship and the relationship they all have with Gramps and Gran. I don't think I will ever get tired of Gramps calling Cassie "Kitten" and of course, Jack's reaction to that!

Mostly this is a retelling and even though I read the series straight through, it felt like there were a few new things or maybe that was just my wishful, romantic heart.

My main disappointment is that the author didn't just highlight Dean and Melissa's scenes from the first three books and finish it off with their HEA. Now, that would have been perfect!

While I loved revisiting Jack and Cassie, I was hoping that this was going to be Dean Carter's story and while I loved the dialogue between him,Jack and Cassie there wasn't anything actually really new. Also, this seemed to jump from scene to scene from The Perfect Game and so didn't flow cohesively and didn't read like a story. However, I did enjoy it. Jack and Cassie were a couple that I took deep into my heart and reading about them again brought back some really fond memories. Dean and Jack's relationship was as close as brothers could be and it was great to read about their bond. Gran and Gramps were there too and brought more smiles. I just love this family as a whole.

I *kinda* went crazy when Jenn Sterling announced that she was going to write a fourth book in The Game Series and to know it was from Dean's point of view.. AHHHHHH!!!

Though there was a little mishap on mine and a few other people's part on Facebook when Jenn announced the news. Look at it yourself:

description

Yeah, not my brightest moment. But in my defense I did read the book quite a while back. But, nonetheless, after I recovered... Uh-huh, you really don't want to know.

This series was my first by Jenn and it will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart because well, Jack F*kn Carter. This is my absolute favorite of hers though Heartless is a close second.

Not many people are keen to read this story but I enjoyed it so so so much! Sure, we are skeptic of reading alternate POV of the same book, especially after a wide gap, but this story is so different and yet keeps true to the previous books. It follows the same timeline of the three books- starts at a frat party and ends in New York (for Jack)

The scenes are the same, yet different. Different how? They are from Dean's perspective!

The glimpses of Jack and Dean's relationship we saw in the previous books is nothing compared to what you witness here. You truly get to know how deep that trust, love and respect runs for each other. These two would do anything and everything for each other, come high hell or low. Older brothers are the invincible heroes in their younger brothers eyes. And Dean. Dean worships the ground Jack walks on.

Every character, every situation, every nuance was do different when seen from Dean's eyes. I mean, we get to see a completely different side of Jack. Sure, Jack is still the same cocky, alpha, crazy protective bastard but he has this soft cuddly bear side that only his family gets to see. We had glimpses of this when he was with Cassie but definitely not to this extent. Oh! and Jack going crazy over Cassie from Dean's POV... One word... EPIC!!!!

It was nice to see his relationship with Cassie as well. The trust, love and respect he has for her and of course all the times when he referred to Cassie his sister. *squeeeeeeeeeeeel* Dean has the kindest, purest heart and soul and you desperately want him to get his HEA with Melissa (Cassie's BFF) which we get enough snippets of to know what is going on.

Gran and Gramps played a significant role in the first three, so when I got to read about them and their teaching all over again... LOVE!!

As compared to The Perfect Game you actually learn how Jack Carter became Jack F*kn Carter. His frame of mind, his behavior and the hurt he experienced at his own expense was all magnified ten-fold.

Dean's POV gives you a completely new perspective of everything and everyone! Including him!

I'm going to try and control my emotions here because I really want to just get a little crazy and start rambling about my love for this book!

First of all this could possibly be my favorite Jenn Sterling book to date. Yep you read that right. FAVORITE! I've loved Dean for years and to get The Perfect Game from his POV was everything! Go ahead start your eye rolling, I know what you're thinking. But you need to stop! I know we all have our thoughts on alternative POV's but I can assure you that this is a story you haven't read yet. It follows the same time line as The Perfect Game. It starts at a frat party and ends in New York (kind of). Sure we get some of the same scenes but honestly it is so much more.

I can't tell you how many times I teared up reading this story. Because while we got Jack and Dean's relationship in previous books from ego driven Jack's pov this time around we truly get to see what is was like between the two of them. Jack is Dean's hero in every sense of the word. Dean is his brother's biggest fan. Always proud, always happy for him and always having his back. So to see the toll that this story as a whole took on Dean was a little more that my ticker could handle at times. We also get to see a different side of Jack. Despite his cocky, no ones gonna hurt me demeanor, Jack is a huge softy when it comes to his family. We may have gotten some glimpses of that previously but not to this extent so it's fun and emotional at times to experience. Add to that the way he feels about Cassie and I was giddy. I love that he loves Cassie like a sister. Dean just has the kindest heart and you want nothing more that for him to be happy.

I could probably go on for a lot longer. But I won't. What I will say is that I loved Gramps in this book. Every time he referred to Cassie as Kitten I smiled like a kid in a candy store. And as far as some of the scenes that made us hate Jack F'n Carter in TPG I think maybe we come away with a better understanding of his frame of mind and the hurt he was experiencing right along with Cassie. So overall if you're a fan of The Perfect Game series you won't want to miss this. Dean's pov will give you new perspective, maybe some tears and a lot more reasons to love the entire gang!

Sigh .. I wanted to love this book but sadly I didn't. It was just ok. I have loved this series from the start so naturally I was excited to get a Dean Carter novel and while I was a little reluctant because this is the first book told in Dean's POV ( we all know how those go .. ) the author stated multiple times that although it was just a rewrite of the first book in Dean's perspective there would be lots of new content. Well .. I'm my opinion sadly there wasn't ): there was just a little more insight into Dean and Melissa's relationship. And in my option that didn't warrant a new book!!

“My heart warmed inside my chest. The way Cassie always tried to include me was exactly why I couldn’t help but think of her as family already. I was so thankful Jack had found her, and that she tolerated him.”

5 Dean stars!! I loved getting a look at the books through Dean’s eyes!!! He’s perfect!

If you’ve read this series, then you know the ups and downs that Cassie and Jack went through getting him to the big leagues. This book shows you the story through Jack’s brother, Dean’s eyes and wow what a refreshing idea! I loved seeing it through his perspective, I was already in love with Cassie and Jack’s story, but you never realize that there’s others involved and what they see and how they see it! I really loved this book, I read it in one sitting!! It’s amazing!!

I want to start off saying that I love J. Sterling and "The Perfect Game" is one of my all time favorites. I was so excited when I heard about "The Other Game" - any story about Jack and Cassie made me giddy, but I felt that this one fell short. After reading it, I guess I just don't understand why J. Sterling felt the need to tell Jack and Cassie's story through Dean. I felt like the story was rushed through and I didn't get any of the spark between Jack and Cassie...nothing gave me all the feels like I remember after reading "The Perfect Game". I don't feel like I learned anything new by this book and it made Dean seem dull and boring. It was even missing all the feels of being at a baseball game like I remember when reading the others! I would have really enjoyed a book about Dean and his life more (not just what revolved around Jack and Cassie). I would have liked to hear more about Dean's experiences interning with the agents and of course more about his relationships...I didn't even feel a real connection between him and Cassie as friends in this version.

I really wanted to like this book...I knew getting into it that it wasn't Dean's story, just Jack and Cassie's through Dean's eyes, but I think J. Sterling made a mistake by not making it all about Dean. It had some of the great details we loved from "The Perfect Game", but the real emotion and feeling just wasn't there in this one.

I'm going to be reading "The Perfect Game" again now because I truly want to fall in love with Jack and Cassie again. I wasn't able to with this book.

This book was just a recycled version of The Perfect Game. There were hardly any new scenes and no plot to be found. I am extremely disappointed with this book. I do not plan on purchasing anything else from this "author."

Dean’s pov on The Perfect Game, gives you a whole new perspective into things in all the best way.
Although Dean has to deal with Jack’s fan girls on a daily basis, he still paves his own way. It may seem he is in the shadow of his baseball star brother but man, does he do a lot behind the scenes. He is completely opposite of Jack F’N Carter, yes he is good looking but that is where the similarities end. Dean isn’t the love them and leave them type of guy. He isn’t looking for a good time, he is looking for serious. So long as Jack doesn’t have his eye on the girl he set his sights on and he prays that she doesn’t want Jack, things will be cool.
Dean is very much into Melissa, who happens to be Cassie’s best friend. He is so relieved and amused that they seem to be the only two ladies who aren’t affected by his brother’s fame and charm (or lack thereof). Their friendship starts of from the get go flirlty. Then gets even flirtier. Poor Dean, Melissa really does put that man through the ringer emotionally and leaves him extremely confused
http://newwaysministryblog.files.word...

Thank goodness for Gran and Gramps. Their advice is always spot on and beautiful.
“Relationships aren’t easy, she said, pinning him with a stern gaze, “but the right ones are worth the work.”
Her words resonated with me, reminding me of my situation with Melissa. Was she the girl for me?

Dean is HILRIOUS and what I loved is how amused he was when Jack meets Cassie. Dean is thoroughly enjoying having to watch Jack actually work and work hard to get this girls attention. Dean never thought he’d see the day, that Jack F’n Carter would be love-struck and knocked on his a$$. Believe me, he is enjoying every minute of it. For those of you who have read this series, we all know the SH!T, ANGST and HEARTACHE that Jack put us through. I loved being able to get things from behind the scenes. I loved seeing how it affected Dean but also being able to see Dean so helpless when it comes to helping his brother out and too see just how vulnerable and broken Jack really was.
Then the whole beginning of Dean and Melissa. Being able to see how it started and exactly what they went through to get where they are. Getting to see the romantic side of Dean as well as seeing a side of Melissa helped answer questions that I had lingering.
The brotherly bond he has with Jack is so heartwarming. The love for his grandparents is endearing. His struggle with his own relationship woes are so exciting and confusing but that is also what makes Dean and Melissa, well- Dean and Melissa… They are at that point where almost doesn’t count but it is also huge.
http://31.media.tumblr.com/c195639ef7...
Dean is a grandson, a brother and a best friend. He is ALWAYS there no matter what. His heart is so big that when those he cares for are hurting, he hurts right along with them. The bond that he has with Jack is fantastic and the love and respect and admiration they both have for the grandparents is awe-inspiring.
Getting to see things from Dean’s P.O.V made fall more in love with the Cater boys, didn’t know it was possible but then again, Sterling has a way with words and you can’t help but fall. She has this uncanny ability to make you laugh, love, scream and cry ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Her characters are always so fun and feel so real that when they mess up, it seriously affects you and that is why she is one of my top favorite authors. I LOVE this series and am so giddy about this book. It is a must read!
J. Sterling- all four of these books equal a World Series Championship! YOU GO GIRL!!!

"No matter how big of a jerk Jack could be to girls, to me he was a really great brother. Which was why I hated hearing people talk shit about him. They didn’t know the real him, the great guy underneath the cocky attitude and big-shot bravado.

What I really liked most about this story, was the close relationship that Dean and Jack shared. Throughout the series, you can really tell how close they were. Learning more about their relationship and now getting to hear about it through Dean's POV, just made it that much sweeter! I fell in love with Jack in the previous books and now I have fallen in love with him all over again! Dean and Jack were not just close because they were related; they really were the best of friends. The teasing they constantly did to each other was too funny. I laughed when Jack asked Dean about him and Melissa. Jack was always giving Dean such a hard time...

“What’s the latest with you two?”

“She likes to kiss me,” I said, smiling like a lovesick idiot. “A lot.”

He gave me a disgusted look. “Are you in junior high? What the fuck does that even mean?”

“It just means that anytime that girl will let me kiss her, I’m going to take it. I like her, all right. I just don’t think she really likes me.”

He punched me in the arm. “Kiss her better then, jackass.”

“I kiss her just fine, fuck you very much.”

“Obviously not,” he teased.

Then there were times that I loved when they showed each other how much they really meant to one another. Dean had no problem telling Jack just what he thought of him...

"I never thought I’d ever hear myself say this, but you’re a really good boyfriend.”

“Damn right I am,” he said, giving me a mock snarl before heading into the kitchen to clean up.

“You’re a good brother too,”

In addition to falling more in love with Jack and getting to know more of Dean, I really did appreciate that this book was in Dean's POV. Yes, this story follows book 1, The Perfect Game, pretty closely, but we also get new information and answers to some questions that readers may have been left with after reading book 1. The only thing that I would have liked would have been to read more about the relationship between Dean and Melissa. That being said, it was nice to get reacquainted with Jack Fuck'in Carter and the gang!

Finally we get Dean and Melissa’s story! I do suggest reading the previous books in this series to totally understand all that happens with Dean and Melissa and to enjoy this story completely.

If you’ve read the Perfect Game Series then you know Dean is Jack F’n Carters little brother and he’s one of the most loveable characters out there. The Other Game is told solely in Dean’s point of view and takes us through a lot of Cassie and Jack’s relationship through his eyes, but also seeing him trying to figure out Melissa.

Seeing Jack and Cassie’s story through Deans eyes was eye-opening. We got to see things we previously didn’t see in the previous books, and we got to go through the aggravation that Dean felt in dealing with Melissa. Dean and Melissa knew each other prior to Jack and Cassie, but never made a move. Now that his brother and her best friend are dating, Melissa pushes Dean away and keeps him in the friend zone. Seeing Dean trying to figure out this women was hilarious. She was even giving me whiplash with all her back and forth. I have always wanted them together, but seeing things through his point of view really helped in explaining why it took so long.

Getting to see Dean and Jack’s relationship was also amazing in this book. You knew they were close in the previous books, but truly seeing the bond that they shared was a beautiful thing to read. My heart broke all over again for Cassie and Jack in this book, as well as Dean this time around. Getting to experience this story from a different point of view was pretty amazing, and it definitely brought back all the feels that I had reading the series.

I adore the Carter boys and am sad to say goodbye to them. I am glad we finally got to read Dean’s story and to re-live the Jack and Cassie love saga. If you haven’t read this series yet, you definitely need to one-click it now. The Perfect Game series is one of my absolute favorites!!

I knew this story was supposed to be The Perfect Game rewritten from Dean's pov but I didn't expect for absolutely nothing else to be going on in poor Dean's life. As the little brother of campus baseball god and womanizer, Jack Carter, Dean experienced some minor annoyances - mainly women asking him for introductions to Jack or slipping him their phone number to give to Jack. Dean certainly had no game of his own. He's hung up on Melissa, Cassie's bff, but he's stuck in the friend zone mainly because he's too chicken to make a move.

We experience the angst all over again from Jack's stupid mistake which led to even more stupid decisions. But it was more of a watered down version. I liked reading Dean's pov of Jack's phone call when he confesses what he did. Jack was wrecked and he poured out all of his guilt to Dean.

Otherwise, I thought this pov was a complete miss. Dean wasn't enough of an insider to Jack and Cassie's drama to learn anything new and we learned absolutely nothing about Dean. I know he didn't get the girl until book three but no other girls in the meantime? No other interests? No emotional trauma from his parents' abandonment? Not even any jealousy of his brother? Lots of missed opportunities to make Dean interesting in his own way. Such a shame.

I loved Jack F'ing Carter and his love story with his kitten. I wasn't sure how J. Sterling was going to make the retelling of book one better from Dean's POV, but let me tell you, you get a whole different perspective when you can hear what was going through Jack's head when he was at his worst.

We knew, through the first three books, that Dean was an integral part fo Jack. But he really was a rock for him. Dean was that steady, calming presence that helped Jack stay grounded. Reminded him of what was important. And was the voice of reason to tell him when he was an idiot and screwed up. I appreciated the bond between these brothers more through Dean's POV. I appreciated his friendship of Cassie, even when things with Jack were at their worst But even more, my heart broke just a little for what he gave up with Melissa to let Jack find his little piece of heaven with Cassie.

A great addition to an already fantastic series. If you love Jack F'ing Carter, you definitely need to grab this book t

I love this series! Dean is the brother I would have gone for from the start. The smart, not as cocky, not as popular one. ;) I really enjoyed getting to see his POV through Jack & Cassie's story. We all wanted to know what the dang deal was with him and Melissa through the whole series and now we get a feel for it. I loved the connection Dean & Jack had and you really got to see the strength of their brotherhood here. This book brought back all the bad memories of the first time I read The Perfect Game, but all the wonderful ones as well. While this book wasn't necessary to the series, it was absolutely welcome! You don't need to reread as this recaps the original, but definitely need to read The Perfect Game before reading this in my opinion. Or read it after. I am ready for a re-read now! Thanks for this, Jenn! I really enjoyed it. :)

Did I love Jack? Did I love The Perfect Game? Did I love this story?.....yes, yes and YES! If you also answered yes to any of these questions then you to will love The Other Game, love Dean. Dean is Jack's little brother and that is sometimes hard to be Jack Carters brother. This is Dean's POV, It does follow the same story as in the The Perfect Came but it is a new story. You will get all the hard to read, Kindle throwing, heart stopping parts you got in the first book but what I loved the most is you get the relationship between two brothers who not only love each other as brothers but best friends. You will learn how Dean is always there for Jack and Cassie. Will you love Dean more than Jack?..... probably not but you will be in like with him and get to know him and the girl he falls for.

This was a retelling of Jack and Cassie's story through
Deans POV. Now, I have to say that this book falls
into the "filler" category for me, but that Is not to say
that I didn't enjoy it. I did.

Sometimes characters come around and you don't want
to like them as much as you do. This was Jack
and Cassie for me. What I got most from Deans
POV, is Jack's feelings. We got to hear and
see Jacks struggles and his downfall...and the
aftermath. There was really nothing new in this
book, and we didn't even get to see anymore
of Dean and his love story. BUT If you liked
the previous books in this series, you will like this one.

It was fun reading about Jack and Cassie again.

Wow! The first chapter pulled me right back into a world that felt like home. Instantaneously I was overcome with the love and emotions I felt while reading the rest of the series.

We all either loved or loved to hate Jack Carter, I personally loved him. I love that we get to relive Jack and Cassie falling in love from a different perspective. I adored Dean while reading The Perfect Game and I loved getting to know him more. Dean knows Jack Carter, not Jack the baseball play but the real Jack. They have this bond that is unbreakable and that withstands everything.

There is something about the Carter brothers that make you fall absolutely head over heels in love with them.

Jumping up and down for this....did I love Jack Fning Carter, YES YES I DID!!!! Did I love The Other Game, YES YES I DID!! I was so happy when I found out that Sterling was going to give us Dean's POV. By the way Dean is Jack's younger brother but if you've kept up with the Game Series you know that already. This was a refreshing update to the series and characters we all fell in love with, Love the little blurb at the end of the book and keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get some more of the next generations story!

I understand the author said this was Dean's POV of Jack and Cassie....but I really wished I had not read this. I loved this series, but this book only concentrated on the rough times they went through and was sad and depressing. I still don't know who Dean is or why he is with Melissa. He was always in Jack's shadow and seems to be in love with someone who could careless. I know the epilogue says "they were madly in love" but, I did not feel it!!

I was lucky enough to get an Arc of the Other Game
This book was G-E-N-U-I-S. Reading Dean's POV was outstanding. J Sterling gave us a great view of Dean Carter. His opinions were so eye opening. His love and admiration for Jack really shined through in this book. I would have thought being Jack's younger brother would have felt like a pain. But not for Dean, he loved his brother with all his heart. When Jack hurt, Dean Hurt. Thanks for another great book

One of my favourite series, but this failed to engage me. I do like an alternative POV, and although there were some good parts overall it was a little too repetitive for my liking. Ultimately I would have preferred it if this just focussed more on Dean and Melissa and less on Jack (did I really just say that!)
