Lola Hannigan is desperate to stay in university, but exactly how far will she go? Professor Greg Greyson has been hurt in the past, is he willing to put his job on the line for love? Find out in my passionate, funny, erotic novel.. BAD STUDENT.
Sexy taboo tale but with multiple perspectives, it's tricky to pull off
Bad Student has the suspense that you’d want from a romance and, like a modern fairytale, a clear battle of goodies and baddies; it reminds me of a Disney plot, but for this reason, I find the sexual scenes a little jarring, imagining that teenage readers would really root for Lola and maybe I’d suggest that the author makes a more definite choice of who she’s marketing to. That being said, the sex stuff is written well and not too overpowering and the subject of Lola’s virginity adds an interesting twist.
Carr shares her narrative perspective between her three lead characters, giving the reader a chance to see behind Lola’s misunderstandings, Professor’s Greyson’s aloof exterior and Troy’s deceptiveness. The tone of Lola’s chapters has an ease and an authenticity about it. Her language is young and conversational. I would say that at times she reads a little younger than she’s supposed to be, but I can forgive that, considering she’s also supposed to be vulnerable and inexperienced. Also at times, the prose gives way to a diary-esque informality, which should work well for a teenage girl’s perspective but actually hinders the flow of the book – the surface is full of grammatical error, exclamation marks and other dips in confidence that make the reader question whether it was intentional or accidental...
This is the story of Lola, a university student who has a personal financial crisis and a crush on Professor Greg Greyson. Her parents have the means to help her but she's determined to make it on her own. Professor Greyson does notice her and is interested but she is his student and such relationships are forbidden. Lola has some serious self-esteem issues when is comes to her weight and overall attractiveness. When her roommate Isabel suggests she take a job with her as a paid escort, she has to decide if she has what it takes to do that or go crawling back to her parents for money.
While the story itself showed promise, I could not get past all the grammar errors. I expect a few in any book that I read but there was an excessive amount is this novella. My pet peeve is the incorrect use of "your" when "you're" should be used. There were also instances of missing words in sentences and incorrect verb tense among others. I don't like to harp on grammar in a review but this is what lowered my rating from 3 to 2 stars.
This story was not quite what I had expected from the cover. I didn't expect a romance; it looked more like a book on trouble teens with alcohol problems. The story is quite good, however. A plot that keeps you on your toes as you wonder if Lola and Greg will work their issues out, and then what is the dashing Troy up to? There are some touching moments and hilarious ones. The characters were well written and their imperfections made them endearing. I'm giving it 4 1/2 stars (and rounding up) because of punctuation problems and issues with lay vs. lie. But overall these were not too distracting. It was a great read. I love the segue into the next book. It is enough to tie up the loose end of Troy and enough to pique interest in finding out what happens next.
Ugh I could not get enough of Professor Greyson and Lola. Great great story. Now please release Bad Together now lol.
Lola Hannigan is trying to finish college but has a huge spending problem. When she spends all of her college money she would rather try escorting than ask her parents for help. Then there is Professor Greyson. Lola has a huge crush on him but has no idea he feels the same. He will not act on it because of fear of losing his job and an ex that has left him damaged. Will they be able to work through their feelings and make it work or will the past keep them apart. I loved it and can not wait to read more.
Positives: A fairly good chick-lit type plot, humorous at times, well written sex scenes.
Very poor proof-reading and spelling which really detracted from the story -it was hard to take Lola seriously as an Oxford English undergrad when she continually used "of" instead of "have". Running the script through a simple spellcheck would have omitted some of the errors.
Overall I think the author could show promise as an author in the chick-lit genre. The plot was there, its just a real shame about the spelling and grammatical errors which were on every page.
