If you like or can stomach a cheating trope, this was done SO FUCKING WELL. Both characters are in unhappy, unhealthy marriages and don't know what to do right away. The flirting, the flashbacks, the longing, the forbidden romance... oof, it was so well done. It's been a while since I’ve read anything that had my heart squeezing and zinging in every single chapter. The friendships (Padma and Blaise, and their meddling) were great, and I loved the fact that there are kids but they ARE NOT the focal point of the story. The plot goes back and forth in time and it’s so engaging. It does start at 100%, so don't be fooled by the author's notes saying that it's a slow burn. It is a slow burn chronologically speaking, but not in the way the book is paced. There is also miscommunication, which I usually HATE, but I didn't mind it here. I actually liked it. Yes to this one. Everyone read it.
🚨 Story (hopefully I got it right but who knows)
For Draco, his feelings start all the way back in third year. Blaise accidentally uses Legilimens on Draco without meaning to and sees his mind is completely full of Hermione. This happens several times throughout the school years, leaving Draco annoyed and Blaise worried that Draco will out him since he is an unregistered Legilimens. Later, Draco punches McLaggen when he claims that Hermione is easy. In sixth year, Draco asks Blaise to help train him to become a better Occlumens, and Blaise tells him he needs to bury Hermione better because her presence is everywhere in his mind. Draco decides to place his thoughts of her inside a mental garden filled with roses because of a connection between her name and the name of a specific rose. During the Battle of Hogwarts, Draco secretly saves Hermione by stunning Dolohov, and no one notices.
Years later, Draco marries Astoria purely out of a mutual sense of contract and commitment. They don't talk and only sleep together to fulfill the terms of their marriage contract- making an heir. Once she gives birth to Scorpius, she lives the Malfoy lifestyle and avoids Draco and Scorpius at all costs. Meanwhile, Hermione marries Ron at a young age, and they have Rose and Hugo. Ron takes a job working for a Quidditch team and becomes increasingly absent from his family’s life. It gets to a point where Hermione stops caring entirely. Ron constantly tells Hermione he doesn't have time to come home, yet he is regularly plastered on the front page of the Daily Prophet celebrating with friends and other women in bars. It becomes widely known, though never officially confirmed, that he is having affairs on the side.
Hermione creates a new filing system for the Ministry, and Blaise jokes, though he does it entirely on purpose to meddle and improve Draco's life, that she should come work in the Auror department alongside Draco and himself. She actually wants the change. Draco has become an amazing Auror since his service was made mandatory to avoid Azkaban, so when he proposes the hiring move, she gets the job. Draco starts getting much more involved with the daily team operations just to be closer to Hermione, but he avoids doing anything direct because he doesn't want to make her uncomfortable or expose his feelings. Draco eventually gets promoted. Padma, the executive assistant of the department and a good friend of Hermione, notices Blaise meddling and sees how Draco watches Hermione. She decides to help because she is tired of seeing Hermione unhappy. Blaise and Padma become closer through their matchmaking scheme. Padma starts pointing out Draco's behavior to Hermione and telling her how smitten he is, basically planting the seed of attraction in her mind.
So the chronological story is:
* January 2008: Padma tells Blaise she knows he is meddling between Draco and Hermione, and she wants in on the plan. Meanwhile, Seamus asks Draco if he thinks Hermione is hot, and Draco responds that she is perfectly lovely just as she is. Blaise realizes during this time that Hermione might actually be attracted to Draco too. * March 2008: Draco and Hermione keep casting glances at each other, and Blaise notices that Draco has started intentionally rolling up his sleeves to show off his arms more. Draco experiences intense jealousy when he learns she is throwing a birthday party for Ron. * April 2008: During one of their Friday team outings, people start talking about Hermione’s beauty. Draco openly states that he would look at her twice, but adds that it is inappropriate since he is her boss and his morally grey past means Hermione would never see him any other way. Later, they flirt in the office about an upcoming Ministry Gala, and he tells her to save a dance for him. She attends the gala wearing a green dress specifically to get his attention, and she directly tells him she wore it for him. She later visits his office during the workday and they dry hump. * May 2008: He tells her he has been noticing her way before she thinks he did, emphasizing that he was focused on her mind rather than just her body. During a Quidditch charity match, he hints that he was only annoying to her at school because he secretly liked her. She suddenly realizes that Draco was the one choosing the department's charities this year, and they are all causes she actively champions. During the game, a Gryffindor handkerchief Hermione is holding blows away. He tells her to meet him for a drink after the match to get it back, but it gets too late and she has to rush home to Hugo and Rose. On Monday morning, he returns the handkerchief at the office, and they discuss introducing their kids to each other. Soon after, Ron is splashed across the Prophet surrounded by women after his team wins a tournament. Padma tells Hermione that she deserves to be happy with someone who isn't Ron. Draco and Hermione admit to each other that they can't easily divorce their partners without entirely upending their lives. Later, Draco gets introduced to the children’s book Silly Little Goose. He tells her she is amazing, and Hermione starts realizing she shouldn't have to settle for being second best to anyone. * June 2008: Hermione invites Draco and Scorpius to the beach. They have a great time, marking Draco's first real trip to the ocean. He tells her that unlike her, he will be finding sand in his trousers for weeks. He mentions he brought sunglasses so she couldn't see where his eyes were looking, and she admits she did the exact same thing, basically confessing their mutual attraction. They talk about the past and how it shaped them, and Hermione notes she wouldn't change the past version of Draco because she likes his present self too much. Later, Blaise confronts Hermione and warns her not to hurt Draco, telling her she needs to set boundaries and rules. Soon after, Hermione absentmindedly votes for herself and Malfoy to attend an out-of-town conference to give a joint speech over the weekend. Padma intentionally books just one hotel room for the two of them. They decide to share the space and the bed. Their speech goes amazingly well, so they go out to celebrate with drinks. They open up much more about their physical attraction: she admits her fixation on his hands and tattoos, while he details his desires regarding control, dirty talk, breath play, and spanking, stating it out loud so she knows exactly what she is getting herself into. Overwhelmed, Hermione freaks out and retreats to the room alone. When they talk it out later, she admits she felt embarrassed because she thought he was making fun of her. Draco counters by explaining he noticed her attraction to his hands, which is why he started wearing rings and showing his arms to get her attention. She admits to a small attraction but notes she knows it is wrong and stupid. They talk about the last time either of them got laid, revealing it has been one year for her and three years for him. They fall asleep, and she wakes up as the little spoon against a waking Malfoy. He heads to the shower to masturbate, and she gets excited knowing he is doing it because of her. She later tells him she knows what he did and begins avoiding him at work. He refuses to let her distance herself, and when she insists they can't have real feelings for each other, he tells her to just let him have her in any way she will allow. She tells him she will think about it. * July 2008: She finally tells Draco her conditions: no feelings, no kissing, and it can only happen just once. They finally give in to months of sexual tension and have their first physical encounter inside a car. * January 2009: Draco and Hermione finally talk out their distance after going six full months without talking. The gap happened because Draco saw a picture of Hermione and Ron looking happy in the Daily Prophet two weeks after their car encounter, and he assumed she was content in her marriage. Taking the first step, Hermione heads straight into his private office and goes down on him. * June 2009: They share an intense kiss inside the Ministry elevator. * July 2009: He tells her he has specific plans for her next month. He reveals that he has only ever been with Astoria a couple of times, and the last time was three years ago. She notes it has been a year for her. She reminds him that they need to ensure this doesn't become messy. * October 2009: She dresses up as a Slytherin for a Halloween party. Padma volunteers to take Hermione's kids home so she can stay longer at the party with Draco. Draco begs her to stay the night with him, but she refuses because she is terrified of getting emotionally attached by sleeping in his bed. As she leaves, she stumbles and gives him a quick peck on the lips. He gives her his old Malfoy Slytherin Quidditch jersey to take with her. * November 09: The news officially breaks that Ron has been cheating on Hermione with another man. The Daily Prophet had agreed to hold the story until Ron was ready to give them the exclusive. Due to the massive media fallout and work chaos, she is unable to see Draco for weeks. * December 2009: She hasn't communicated with Ron in weeks, and everyone in the Ministry knows her marriage is completely over. Cormac McLaggen joins one of their Friday team outings and tells Hermione that the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures wants to hire her. She confronts Malfoy about it, and he confesses he deliberately kept her in his department to keep her close, but promises he will talk to the other department soon to facilitate her move. On December 23rd, she invites Draco over while wearing nothing but his Quidditch jersey. She tells him she is officially divorcing Ron. Draco doesn't really react, and they finally have full sex. Afterward, she mentions that while she isn't actively seeing anyone else, she is open to the possibility of dating in the future. Draco misinterprets this as her wanting to see other men, gets upset, and leaves her alone in the bed immediately after they finish. * January 2010: She starts her new position in the new department. Ron and Hermione have officially broken up and are living entirely apart. Draco spots Hermione and McLaggen talking together at the Ministry and assumes the worst. * February 2010: McLaggen joins another team outing. Hermione gets drunk, and Draco trails safely behind her as she walks home in the dark. They get into an argument about him abandoning her in bed and her feeling used. * March 2010: They officially agree to try being regular friends. * April 2010: Draco appears in the Prophet out on the town with another woman, making Hermione intensely jealous. In reality, the woman is just Draco’s legal case worker; he is actively trying to figure out how to divorce Astoria, completely unbothered by how much wealth he will lose because he believes he deserves better. Draco also secretly uses a portion of his wealth to hire specialists to fully reinstate Hermione’s parents' lost memories without ever telling her. Later, Draco spots Hermione having breakfast with Cormac. He visits her at her office afterward, and they share a conversation about the pain of her parents not remembering her. * May 2010: Hermione throws a housewarming party for her new place. Draco goes with Scorpius, but they leave early the moment Cormac arrives. Cormac later asks Hermione out on an official date, and she declines, choosing to remain just friends. She tells Blaise that she would never date Cormac but notes that she and Draco are completely finished. Blaise tells her he can prove they aren't done and shares his own memories of Draco's long-standing devotion. Hermione admits she is terrified that a relationship with her will destroy all the good progress Draco has made to reform his name, but Blaise tells her to stop worrying and just go get him. * June 2010: A year after their original presentation, the Ministry throws a grand gala in honor of Hermione and Draco's project. They are forced to dance together. During the dance, she tells Draco that she never actually dated Cormac and reveals that she saw Blaise's memories. Panicked by the exposure, Draco freaks out and flees the gala. Hermione follows him and invites him to talk things out at their beach spot. * July 2010: They finally clear the air completely at the beach. He reveals that Scorpius and he are no longer part of the official Malfoy estate trust and that he is officially filing for divorce. She confesses that she really, truly likes him. He smiles and shows her a new rose tattoo on his chest, the exact place he had previously told Blaise he would only ever get for someone he couldn't bear living without.
Two years later, Hermione has lost a few of her old Gryffindor friendships due to the messy breakup, and Draco is living without the backing of his parents, but they are completely happy together. They don't care about getting a legal marriage, and she is happily pregnant with their child.
i would have rated this so much higher if the chapter timeline were cohesive but it got really confusing trying to keep note on what happened before and after each chapter as it would jump between months and years.
