It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all. Or so they say.

An alphabetical seating chart on the first day of medical school at MMCI initiated a cascade of events that changed the lives of Isaac Britlyn and Jo Carello forever. Through the ups and downs of their first year, their friendship prevailed. That is, until Jo squandered an opportunity and Isaac’s trust.

——

After 12 years of trying to forget the possibility of what could’ve been, researcher and professor Dr. Jo Carello has given up on love. Coming back to her alma mater to shape the minds of future physicians proves more difficult than she ever imagined, especially when her friend turned enemy, Dr. Isaac Britlyn, shows up on campus for the fall semester. Surrounded by the memories of her feelings for Isaac, Jo is determined to maintain her focus and make a name for herself in neuroscience research.

After finding out that Jo "the one that got away" Carello is back at MMCI, Dr. Isaac Britlyn changes all his plans. Be it the universe, a twist of fate, or Isaac’s pure determination, he sets his sights on repairing the relationship that he let fizzle. Even after incredible love and loss, the spark that brought them together starts to rekindle. Can Isaac prove that this time is different?

✨️Woo! What a great debut novel this is! I absolutely ate this book up. This book put me on an emotional rollercoaster from the very beginning. You will laugh, cry, swoon, and everything in between. Not only did I love the main characters, but I also loved Carmen (Jo's best friend) and Liam (Isaac’s brother)! I hope we get more of their stories! If you love a slow-burn and/or second chance love story, definitely give this a read!

Well this mystery thriller girly usually has a strict “no books from the pink-purple section of the color spectrum” rule, but obviously I’ll make an exception thanks to receiving an ARC copy straight from the author. This is the coolest I’ve felt in a minute, so thank you.

The story was engaging, with characters and a plot that balanced lighthearted moments with deeper emotional moments. These characters are real and flawed and had me both rooting for them and screaming at them as if I was watching Sunday Night Football. Leonard's writing is smooth and accessible, making it easy to connect with the main characters as they navigate life, whether we agree with their choices or not.

Although the genre shift gave me whiplash (if the author is reading this, it’s not you, it’s me), I enjoyed the way the author crafted realistic relationships and life experiences, and I appreciated the moments of humor and sarcasm that kept the story engaging for a cynic like me. The world is ready for Jo and Isaac (and Carmen, obviously).

Thank you KC for the eARC! Peer Reviewed is out on 9/5!

I absolutely LOVED this story. I read it in two sittings in less than 24 hours. I could not put it down!!

This was a beautiful and emotional story. I think a lot of times people perceive romance novels as being fluffy and sometimes shallow. While those stories can be absolutely enjoyable, I find myself yearning for stories with more depth. This one did not disappoint!

Peer Reviewed really surprised me and while the relationship between the main characters was the primary focus, there was so much more here. The characters’ families and friendships were a huge part of this story as well. I loved the dual POV’s and time jumps. I find that I’m drawn to books written this way because it gives me a better sense of the characters and how they grow and develop over different seasons.

The only part of the story I struggled with was the constant miscommunication. I do think that this functioned well as far as furthering the plot line and sometimes in real life miscommunication happens! As a reader it can be frustrating to read through, but I know both of the MC’s at different points were struggling to be vulnerable and I can see how in real life that’s something that just happens.

I loved how the author portrayed these characters with real life struggles such as grief and anxiety. She wrote them in such a relatable way that I hope other readers also find parts of themselves in these pages.

Beautifully written, hilarious dialogue and super relatable! This is her first book and gosh what a great debut novel. Truly can’t wait for KC’s next one!

I have never read such a perfect romance novel.

Jo and Isaac have known each other for twelve years - in the most epic of miscommunication tropes, this book follows these two through medical school, residency, and back to medical school as instructors. The ups and downs of this story, including so much love, loss, friendship and ultimately (spoiler alert) a beautiful happily ever after. You will laugh, you will cry and you will absolutely fall in love with Campustown and the community KC Leonard has made come to life with her incredible words.

I am BEGGING KC Leonard to PLEASE give a HEA to Carmen and Victoria. I am dying for those stories!!

ARC REVIEW!

4⭐️!
I loved the story, the main characters, the side characters, the families of the main characters.
To be honest, I didn't expect much. I thought this was a cheesy romantic story between two people but so much more happened in this book. I fell in love with Jo and Isaac and the rollercoaster dynamic between them over the years. But for the love of god, why did it take them so long?

A very emotional read, please check the trigger warnings!

Thank you so much for the opportunity to read your book in advance, KC Leonard!
I'm excited for more!

“We fit together like two puzzle pieces that have been lost for years under the couch cushions in a basement, the puzzle left unfinished but still hopelessly beautiful just the same.” 🧩 ♥️ 🍕 🏥

I first off want to say thank you SO much to @authorkcleonard for my first ever ARC and writing such a wonderful book with such engaging characters that now feel like friends 🥹. For being her debut novel she blew me out of the water!

You know the feeling after you finish a wonderful season of your favorite comfort show and you just sit there with a full heart and reveal in the journey it took you on? 🥹 That’s how I felt after I read Jo and Isaac’s second chance romance in this book! Talk about SLOW burn and wrong time wrong place but oh so worth the wait l, this book had me swooning, tearing up, wanting to yell “please just talk this out!” 🗣️😆 and smiling all at once!

The book did a wonderful job covering more than just romance and tackled grief and anxiety and mental health. As someone who has struggled with anxiety, since I was a child and navigated how to live without as an adult, it was neat and ways to see how that played out and Isaac and Jocelyn’s lives, and how they work through that together.

I thought that the side characters were really well written. I absolutely adored the relationship that Jocelyn had with her father and the strong bonds that Isaac hard with his father and his brothers. As a mom of three boys, I can only hope that my sons have that strong of a connection, especially when you go through such a hard time like they were going through. ♥️

Overall this book was pretty much perfection in my book for a Stem Romance 💘 and will hold a special place in my heart as my first ARC 🥰. It’s out now on Kindle Unlimited and as a physical book and you should deff run 🏃‍♀️ to add to your TBR!

I was given the amazing privilege to receive an ARC of this debut and I am completely and utterly floored by how amazing this read was. There was some very heart felt emotion that had me in tears, good laughs and the characters were so genuine.

Medical terminology, longer timeline, missed connections. Ugh I’m just so happy for this author!

I received this book and an ARC and I cannot tell you how excited I am to have received it!!

I really enjoyed this book the whole time. I loved Jo and Isaac. I loved Carm and Chloe and Liam and my baby Sam 🥲 I just had so many “hehehehe” moments and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole book. My only “complaint” if you will, was how long the miscommunication was, but I 100% can’t see any of it being cut out; everything was just so important to their story. But also why wasn’t Jo mad at Carm 🤣

I was really feeling Abby Jimenez/Lucy Score vibes while I was reading. I just enjoyed every page!

Overall, I really enjoyed Peer Reviewed and I truly cannot wait to continue the series!! 💖

KC wrote a heart felt STEM romance novel that also tied in themes of grief and trauma from illnesses. I can’t get over how much I love Isaac and Jo and how angry they made me by not just being together the first time! However, I guess that’s what makes this book so perfect. I’m not always a fan of spicy romances, but I think KC executed this seamlessly and beautifully. The slow burn romance, the ache, the need, the desire, it was all so fun to watch grow throughout the novel. I resonate with losing someone due to cancer so the parts about grief were rough but It pulled me in even more…

Thank you KC for choosing me to be an ARC reader ♥️

I had the immense honor of editing and proofreading this story, and I am waiting on the edge of my seat for everyone else to meet and fall in love with Jo and Isaac.

If you had asked me before reading Peer Reviewed if I liked second-chance romance, I would've told you it wasn't my favorite to read. But this pining?? The tension?? The "it's always been you" vibes?? It had me rooting for them and wanting to smack them at the same time.

Some romances are just fun, fluffy reads (and I love them for that), but this book had me on a roller coaster of emotion. We had a running cry count (I think I hit 7), and Kim was regularly accosted by me screeching in her DMs at some of her best one-liners.

I have recommended this book to every single one of my friends, and I encourage you to read it too. I hope this story of love and loss and friendship touches you as deeply as it did me.

Congratulations on your debut, Kim! I can't wait to see where you go from here <3

I had the pleasure of reading an ARC (my first ARC too) of Peer Reviewed by KC Leonard, and I have to say, this book took me on a heartfelt and trope-filled journey that reminded me a lot of *Yours Truly* by Abby Jimenez.

It follows the story of two doctors, Jo and Isaaic, who meet during their early residency years. The book is split into two timelines and duo POVs, with the first half exploring their past, where they develop a close friendship with hints of something more. As you can imagine, things don’t go smoothly, and we see plenty of miscommunication and missed opportunities, setting up the second chance romance that blossoms in the present-day timeline of the second half of the book.

It has the perfect balance of tension between Jo and Isaac, creating a slow burn that’s heavy on the tropes: friends to lovers, second chance, miscommunication, and he falls first (which I always love!). Their chemistry is palpable from the start. Watching their relationship evolve over time felt realistic and emotional, and I found myself rooting for them to finally get things right.

Overall, Peer Reviewed is a great story of love, friendship, and second chances. It releases on September 5th, and I highly recommend adding it to your TBR.

Thank you so much to the author for sending me an eARC in exchange for a honest review!
This book caught my attention because of the beautiful cover (I’ve been following the illustrator for a while and I love her work) and also the fact that it is a STEM romance, which is one of my favorite types of romance! Moreover, it is a second chance romance, which my hopeless romantic heart LOVES! The book also features some heavy topics like cancer and death, so please be aware of that before picking it up!
I really enjoyed the book at the beginning - I thought the two MCs were so sweet with each other and I was really swooning and rooting for them! I also loved reading about their journey through medical school, I thought it was really interesting! Since the book also talked about the cancer journey of a side character throughout the years, it was sometimes quite heavy and sad to read, but at the same time it gave the story some emotional depth.
The story is told over 12 years, so naturally there are sometimes big time gaps in-between chapters, but nevertheless I felt like as a reader I could connect with the characters well even if I “missed” some parts of their lives.
However, the fact that this book is told over such a long period of time makes it drag a bit at times, and there was a lot of repetition of the MCs getting closer, then some miscommunication happened, then they don’t talk to each other for a long time, then they get closer again, same thing happens again. I don’t necessarily hate the miscommunication trope if it is used reasonably, but here I feel like the fact that it was used so many times and it was this constant state of “will they end up together or will they not talk to each other again for months” kind of ruined the romance that I really loved at the beginning - so unfortunately towards the end I didn’t really feel their love for each other anymore, which was very unfortunate. However, overall I still really enjoyed the writing style and the setting so if you are not too bothered by the miscommunication trope I think you might still really enjoy this book & I recommend checking it out!

ARC review- This book really had me feeling the whole range of emotions from falling in love with Jo and Isaac and rooting for them to be together to crying over loss to laughing at the countless witty one liners KC Leonard has written and so much more. I don’t usually have the attention span to finish reading books but this one had me hooked from the very beginning, so eager to know how everything played out. I also appreciated the small details woven into the story that just made it even more relatable.

I truly loved this book and it is a real privilege to have read this in advance of the official release date. Bravo and well done, KC Leonard! This is a real winner!

Peer Reviewed follows Jo and Issac, two people who met in medical school and follows them up through their schooling journeys into residencies, fellowships and beyond.

The book is well written and definitely gets makes you feel a range of emotions. I cried with the characters at certain points, the topic of grief is well explored.

I was a bit over the miscommunication by the end, 12 years is a long time to have this back and forth which definitely could've been resolved earlier. It would've been nice to see more of their relationship when they were actually together.

Overall a good book and I did love the STEM setting.

5 stars!⭐️

I was lucky enough to read this book early and it is so so special and near and dear to my heart; an easy 5 star read and one of my favorite books of the year!

The book follows main characters, Jo and Isaac through the trials and tribulations of medical school, residency, and beyond - spanning over 12 years. The story of their slow burn, second chance romance is told through both past and present timelines and you’ll be rooting for them to get it right every step of the way!

KC’s writing is raw, authentic, moving, funny, heartfelt…I could go on and on. Her voice shines throughout the novel. I especially admire how she handled the topic of grief with such care and genuine emotion. You will laugh and cry, and feel all of the emotions right alongside her characters.

This is such a highly impressive debut novel and I cannot wait to see what’s next for KC Leonard and the rest of the characters!

I absolutely loved the rollercoaster story about Issac and Jo.
A second chance romance of two doctor professors at MMCI medical school, surrounded by memories of their time as students and the friendship they had.

It was such an emotional story, not just about them but also their families. Each member of the Jo and Isaac’s families leaving a great impression on everyone.

Just the right amount of plot and spice. Which I can’t wait for the next book KC writes 😁

3.5 stars. It pains me to not be able to rate this higher (why I rounded up) because there were parts I enjoyed but overall as the story went on it was a tad too disjointed and so. many. miscommunications. I’m not even an outspoken miscommunication hater but this was next level. Especially around 60-70% it was like they were purposefully misunderstanding each other for the sake of the plot/angst.

The constant time jumps were pretty unique and I actually found most of them fun. The blurb/premise may suggest it’s dual timeline but half the book is actually every 2-3 chapters skipping ahead a year or 2 until you get the last 50% in current time. If I were to make editing suggestions it would be to have one timeline be one chapter instead of the mental hoops to have to remember like “okay August 5 years but it’s his POV so really it’s only 5 seconds after the last chapter that was her POV but the next chapter very well could be a 2 year time jump so pay attention”.

I went into this also expecting more “STEM romance” vibes but really it’s like a soap opera between 2 people who happen to have MDs including CW more than one side character’s very tragic death. This is very character emotions/feelings peaks and valleys driven rather than the work life of a doctor or professor or researcher. For once I wanted Jo to talk to her BFF about science rather than just constantly Isaac and the 2 sets of THREE years she “got over him” (yes 3 year time chunk twice). I don’t mind a book that is only romance but constant debrief about will they/won’t they feelings between not the main characters gets old after a while without other side plots. Also, the queer rep with Jo’s BFF Carmen was slightly questionable to me, her queerness was veering on caricature but I’m choosing to give the benefit of the doubt.

I appreciate the eARC I received from the author. Some things I loved were the scenes with the FMC Jo’s dad, like I mentioned the time jumps, the very beginning budding friendship and mutual crush of their romance, found family aspects, and the college town setting. I would try this author’s next book even though this wasn’t a total winner for me.

2stars ⭐️⭐️

I so wanted to love this, having a background as a scientist and just loving science in general I wanted this to be amazing. But it just wasn’t. Even though it was only 390 pages, it felt way longer. Everything was threw into this book which in some ways I loved but in other ways just felt too intense.

I loved the banter, as I loved the characters and their clear chemistry from the outset. I was so excited for the spice to hit and then it just fell flat and I found myself cringing at the spice :(

Disappointing but not terrible

DNF at 30%. No rating because I only rate books if I’ve gotten past the halfway mark. But some comments:

- I don’t understand the point of starting the book in the past, when you’re basically taking us through their story line and there isn’t a flip to the present between chapters. Each chapter continues in the past, ie, “8 years ago, med school”, without a switch to present day. Isn’t that just the storyline at this point?

- The main characters were underdeveloped and their connection seemed more implied than actually stated. I didn’t feel a thing for them.

Overall, I was disinterested from the start and it was difficult for me to get into the story. I typically love romance, so it’s not a genre thing — I think it ultimately felt like it was dragging and there was no hook to really get me invested.

Thank you KC Leonard for an e-ARC of the book in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you to KC Leanoard for giving me the opportunity to be an arc reader for this & providing me with this advanced reader copy of Peer Reviewed in exchange for an honest review! 🤍

Overall Rating: 3.75/5 ⭐️
Spice Rating: 1.5/5🌶️

As a debut novel from Leonard, this book was done wonderfully! I don’t read many books where the characters, or one character or another are in STEM & it was great to read something like this again where the characters are in the med field — something i feel like is so far beyond my reach of capabilities in a career that it’s just nice to put myself in their shoes for a little bit!

I really enjoyed the dual timeline aspect of the book as well with this one - sometimes they’re either a hit or miss for me in weather i’m gonna enjoy a book broken up told in the past & in the present but Peer Reveiwed was so well done with this & i think it just made it even more special and emotional and really just showed us the true nature and build up of Isaac & Jo as individuals and as a couple.

The book felt not only so sweet & intimate at times with their romance & focus on the relationship with the two main characters, but dealt with so much more and just felt so realistic when it came to the characters being vulnerable and dealing with things like anxiety, grief and overall mental health that are a very real thing that people have to live with everyday. I didn’t expect the book to be so emotional, but books that bring that side out of me are always ones i enjoy more than I realize.

💜 second chance
💜 stem academia
💜 it’s always been you / secret mutual yearning
💜 workplace
💜 grief processing
💜 friends to “enemies” to lovers
💜 right person, wrong time

dual timelines • dual pov • open door spice • women in stem • mental health rep

So, I just wrapped up this book during my commute, and let me tell you, I was so engrossed that I almost missed my stop! I’d give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars. It had the potential to hit the 4-star mark, but the ending? Oh boy, it was like getting a soggy sandwich at a gourmet restaurant.😐

Let’s start with the good vibes! The first 70% of this novel was a total emotional ride. The angst was real, and the character dynamics had me hooked. I mean, I was crying in front of strangers—definitely not my proudest moment! The characters’ struggles and desires were so relatable that I felt like I was living through their drama. ❤️‍🩹

But then we hit the finale, and it felt like the author just ran out of gas. The male lead? Major indecisiveness! Instead of focusing on his own feelings, he kept checking in with everyone else’s opinions. Meanwhile, the female lead was left waiting for him. She ended up in an abusive relationship while still holding onto hope for him to return. Talk about frustrating!🤦🏽‍♀️She had so much strength earlier in the story; it felt like she took a nap right when things got interesting.🙄😫

Then there’s the friend who decided to play relationship referee. While I get that she meant well, her meddling just added more drama than necessary and contributed to the couple's misery!😡😡

In short, this book had me feeling all sorts of emotions and showcased some fantastic character development—until it didn’t. If you’re into angst-filled stories that make you cry (and don’t mind an ending that leaves you scratching your head), then dive in! Just be prepared for some unresolved romantic chaos at the end.💛

You can call me biased but I loved reading this book. When I got the paperback in the mail, my inner child was jumping for joy (okay yes current me was jumping too). I expressed to my boyfriend how surreal it must have felt for K.C. Leonard to receive the first box, filled with copies of her book. When he looked at me like I had three heads, I realized not everyone shares this dream. As time has gone on, and school has taken over my life, I have let this dream flicker on like a lone candle. But seeing this author weave her own grief and love and passions into this work? It has doused my flickering candle with gasoline and lit a hundred matches. Leonard’s description of anxiety (yes I am talking about the wedgie) and of love (yes I am talking about the sudden realization that true love is found in the absence of butterflies). I felt so seen. It made me realize that my passions can coexist. I can help people in both the ways I love; through written word and with my hands. I will absolutely be recommending this book to anyone who is navigating grief, the impending sense of doom experienced by all 20-30 year olds, and those who look for love anywhere, everywhere. I will get off my soapbox now…but thank you K.C. Leonard for sharing this story with us.

This was an ARC given to me by the author in exchange of an honest review:

I loved this book. For a debut, it's so well done.
The emotions, the characters, the dialogues, the monologues, everything was so good.
Isaac had been on love with Jo for more than a decade and their timing was always off. It was both of their faults that they kept missing their chance but they finally got it at the end.
Jo had also been in love with him for a decade and she was afraid to try one more time and get her heart broken again. But she managed to overcame it and opened her heart fully to the possibilities.
The emotional parts in this book killed me. I cried, I'll admit fully. My heart just broke for Jo and Isaac. I felt what they felt and I wanted to help them heal. But I was glad that they helped each other move on, in a way.
I just loved how everyone was always rooting for them to be together, it was hilarious. The only knuckleheads that didn't get the memo of their feelings were themselves.
They were very good together and I really liked them

Cute! Excited to see what comes next for the author 🫶🏻

This book is a romance but there is a heavy dose of loss and grief in this. It’s very somber a lot of times so check trigger warnings if you happen to have any.

This book is definitely one where if they had just had a conversation they could have worked it out a lot sooner. I do feel like their life circumstances (family health issues, self confidence, and med school) were genuine reasons for the lack of communication though. It’s a second chance/sloooooow burn but I loved the way they were best friends first. I was immediately hooked while reading this. Something about the author’s writing and the whole ‘will they, won’t they’ aspect really had me binge reading this book.

I liked both MCs a lot. I really appreciated the dual pov in this because you got to understand why there was so much push and pull with them. Both of their families were perfect. Jo’s dad and Sam were amazing.
Recommended if you love second chance romance and don’t mind a miscommunication trope. ☺️

Thank you to KC for the eARC of your debut novel that releases 09.05.2024!

Peer Review is a dual-perspective novel that follows the journey of Dr. Jo Carello and Dr. Isaac Britlyn over twelve years and moves between flashbacks to their days as medical school colleagues and their current lives as professional peers. As they navigate complicated history and rekindle a past connection, this novel explores how time and experiences have impacted their relationship.

I absolutely loved this story—it’s a beautifully written, fun yet emotional read that will make you feel every emotion. I usually don’t enjoy the miscommunication trope but in this novel, it was excepted so well that I actually felt it enhanced Jo and Isaac’s overall story by adding depth to the characters and contributing to their development as individuals. I also have to mention the “dicktionary” at the beginning of the book is super creative and is something I’ve never seen done before. I loved it and thought it was incredibly thoughtful to add for those readers who prefer to skip the spicy scenes.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves:
🩺 slow burn
💟 second chance
🩺 workplace romance
💟 friends to “enemies” to lovers

This is such a fantastic debut novel, and I can’t wait to see what KC comes up with next for the Peers and Players series! I’m especially hoping for a story focused on Carmen because I loved her firecracker personality.

I completely forgot to add my honorable mentions for some of my favorite quotes!!

"She's the physical manifestation of every dream I've ever had."
"There's something about being with him. Seeing how much of her lives within him." (This one hits so hard because I am SUCH a daddy's girl myself)
"Death is. not an emergency. Once someone is gone, there is no rush. No need to call an ambulance or decide what happens right away."
"You are a direct reflection of the man he was." (This one also hits different)
"You've spent the last four years focusing on information that the most brilliant minds in medicine have cultivated for us, but remember somethings, like love, can't be peer reviewed." THIS ONE IS TOP TIER -- IT HONESTLY IS SO GOOD, THE TITLE MENTION R U KIDDING?!?!

ok thanks xoxo

WOW WOW WOW!!!

I honestly don’t even know if I have the words to describe how much I loved Jo and Isaac’s story and I am so grateful to have been given an ARC. I’m not normally one to go for more “serious” romance books but the way KC threaded their careers, love, friendships, and serious topics (don’t want to go into details so I don’t spoil it) into such a beautiful story is going to stick with me for a long time.

This is one giant miscommunication book! It is super frustrating because you want to yell … JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER!
