About the author

Lisa Mangum has loved and worked with books ever since elementary school, when she volunteered at the school library during recess. Her first paying job was shelving books at the Sandy Library. She worked for five years at Waldenbooks while she attended the University of Utah, graduating with honors with a degree in English. An avid reader of all genres, she has worked in the publishing department for Deseret Book since 1997.
Besides books, Lisa loves movies, sunsets, spending time with her family, trips to Disneyland, and vanilla ice cream topped with fresh raspberries. She lives in Taylorsville, Utah, with her husband, Tracy. She is the author of the Hourglass Door trilogy and After Hello.

Mangum’s craft book is filled with useful tips for the novice and more tried author alike, but what really stands out is the message of hope and encouragement. Mangum’s words will encourage you to reach until you feel as though you can touch the sky.

The cheerful and encouraging tone of this book is enough to make me recommend it to anyone seeking publication, but then there's also the excellent advice, the pearls of wisdom from the literal trenches (Lisa is well known editor and author AND writing coach), and the clear and fun examples! This is just an overall great book for every stage of writing from getting your story down to getting it out there for publication. I really liked the anecdotes from her own experiences, paired with examples from popular media (TV shows, movies, books), both of which helped to illustrate her points and make them memorable!

This was packed with information for writers and editors but I'd like to add to that. I'm neither of those, but I read a lot and I liked the way she divided everything up into little bites. Even though I don't like every book I read, I can always find something I do like and this book points a lot of those things out.

Such a great all-in-one craft book. I assumed it was only about editing and getting published but found more gems in the advice about crafting and building stories than any other section. Listened on audiobook through the library and needed my own copy to go back and reference. Highly recommended for any writer but especially for those still learning and honing their craft!

Write Fearless. Edit Smart. Get Published. By Lisa Mangum is one of the most engaging, approachable, and encouraging book on writer that I’ve ever read. She is somehow able to balance honesty about the difficulties you may face in the process with an unflinching optimism that makes the reader feel like the world could stand to benefit from your words in print.

I got this book because I was very interested in the process but haven’t thought about writing as a career since middle school when I dreamed of writing books I loved to read. I’m not sure where along the way I decided to give up on that dream, but this book had me going back time and time again to that smaller version of myself and asking “why not me?” This book is written so full of hope and encouragement, and it is the perfect companion to any and every aspiring writer (and maybe even those who might have once been an aspiring author). Lisa, if I ever get around to writing my book, I hope my editor is someone who carries your passion for the written word, your optimism that the world is big enough for everyone to have a voice, and your skillful pen thats both compassionate and direct. This book is fantastic, and I’m grateful to the 26 days you took to summarize 26 years in the industry.

This is by far one of the best writing books I've ever come across. Mangum's relatable voice, personal examples, and entertaining prose kept me engaged throughout the book. I've already reread several of the sections and I have a feeling that I'll be coming back to this book over and over again for some "Storytime with Lisa" mini coaching sessions.

I've been lucky enough to attend classes from Lisa at writing conferences and I've come to appreciate her vast knowledge of not only the publishing industry but of writing and storytelling in general. It's so wonderful to have a book I can hold in my hands that contains a portion of her knowledge and encouragement. Every amateur writer--and established writer--needs a resource and a cheerleader like this one.

Write Fearless. Edit Smart. Get Published is a gift to both writers & readers alike! I devoured this book. It’s one I’ll read again & again. Why? Because I think deep down in every reader loving heart is a writer wanting to share their story.

Imposter syndrome is real, & for every person like me who would like to write a book, the first thing you think is “I can’t.” This book made achieving a writing dream seem possible. And, even if I don’t ever pick up the pen, it’s made me a better reader. Lisa Mangum shares her fantastic advice, heartfelt experiences, & wisdom in a personal, easy to understand way with practical tips every avid reader/writer will appreciate.

I loved the structure of the book beginning with the writing process. In this section, she uses easy to understand mathematical formulas & charts for everything from themes & character triangles to not writing a disappointing ending. I loved examples of Star Wars, Mr. Potato Head, & popular TV series to illustrate her points.

The next section is all about editing. I loved the technical examples including the good old Oxford comma, the difference between “which” & “that,” & other common writing mistakes. (I’m going to die if she reads this & finds it riddled with grammatical errors.) She also discusses fixing plot holes, character arcs, & finally sharing your manuscript.

The final section was an eye opening look inside the publishing world. From crafting the “elevator pitch” to effective tips on submission, this helpful section explains the ins & outs from an expert. I also loved examples from authors I love & are familiar with. Rejection is a real fear & she explains how to handle it without giving up. And, if you want help with a specific problem, she has references!

Perhaps my favorite part is “Story Time With Lisa.” We get a real glimpse of the author’s generous, honest reflection of her experiences as a reader, writer, & editor. Sharing her personal triumphs, grief, & fears made me feel like we were instant friends & her advice all the more meaningful. I’ll never look at a paper clip quite the same.

First, no judging my grammar or punctuation or holding it against the book. While I have highlighted practically all of the editing guidelines in the book, it hasn’t all sunk in yet.

I wasn’t even through the forward by a bestselling author before I pulled out my burgeoning story that has been the opposite of burgeoning for several years. The most I have done with it in ages is imagine my future acclaim.

This is a soup-to-nuts guidebook that you’ll want to reference often. As the title suggests, this book is more about just writing fearlessly and less about the initial planning stages, but it is encouraging and who am I to know? This is my first book about writing, let alone my first time writing or publishing my own book. I get the sense that this is probably more helpful than many of the other books out there.

I do feel bad for all the NaNoWriMos out there who could have used this a couple of months ago. I don’t know why the publisher waited until late November to release it but keep it in mind for next year.

If I had to come up with another complaint, it’s that the author is possibly too nice. She uses herself as the example in many of the scenarios, but I don’t think most editors are nearly as accommodating as she is. Unless she wants to read all of our submissions, I would recommend some jolts of reality with input from a variety of editors at different types of publishing houses and of varying sizes. If she wasn’t nice, though, she probably would not have written this book which is probably the bigger win for us!

Write Fearless, Edit Smart, Get Published is a wonderful little book on the craft of writing and the journey to publication. Lisa Mangum uses her years of editing experience — and experience publishing books of her own — to walk writers through the writing process, simplify the editing process, and inspire hope for the publishing process. I would recommend this book for beginning writers who want to be published, but Lisa has plenty of tips that seasoned writers will benefit from. Lisa is very well-read and draws examples from her own 25 years in publishing and from a host of books she’s enjoyed over the years. She has an incredible list of Recommended Resources at the end, too.

Although the wisdom Lisa shares is wonderful (and I took copious notes), my favorite part about this book is how warmly she shares her thoughts. Reading this book, I felt like I was having a nice coffee with a publishing superstar. I happily soaked up Lisa’s warmth and encouragement alongside her wisdom and experience. It was delightful to read, and I will be sharing this book with all of my writer friends.

I don't write fiction, so I don't know the real mechanics behind creating good copy. I've been a newspaper and magazine writer for the past 40 years or so. The techniques used for both fiction and reporting --building conflict, story-telling, etc., may overlap somewhat, but they are generally two competing types of discipline. So, I don't know real fiction writing. But I do read novels

Lisa Mangum has written a very uplifting, encouraging book on how to write good fiction. She goes from gathering the idea, writing vs. editing first drafts, grammar, character building, continuity and avoiding distractions. She admits writing is hard, but she remains upbeat and cheerful about the process. That's where this book sings, I think. After a section on the formulas of fiction that may seem quite complex, she urges the reader to be okay if overwhelmed at first.

She also includes "Story Time With Lisa," that includes some of her personal stories as an editor or writer that give the readers hope about their own successes. Overall, this has a "we're all in this together" feel.

It's a very good, entertaining read and for someone wanting to really get into fiction, this should be must-reading.

If you've been thinking to yourself, "I think I want to buy a book that will tell me how to dive in and write what's in my heart, how to edit so that my book is professional, and how to get published." Well.... I'm going to save you a whole bunch of time searching and scrolling. Here it is!!

This author holds a special place in my heart because she was also the editor of my very first published novel, The Lemonade Year. Lisa Mangum took me from aspiring novelist to publish novelist! I would say she knows what she's doing!

This book is the perfect mix of instruction and encouragement and real industry information. It is visually appealing and fun to read. Lisa shares her most valuable instruction and real stories from her life as an editor and the authors that she has worked with. I am incredibly honored to be mentioned in this book!! How amazing is that!

This book goes from idea to publication with practical information every step of the way! Not just theories but actual how to! It's a book about how to be brave, how to be professional, and how to get your work published! Buy this book!!

“Quit…But if you can’t— do the work!”

Five stars you guys. This book is five stars. I could not put it down. A masterclass book meant for fiction writers and I could not put it down. Excellent read. Whether you are an author, and aspiring author, a reader with the tiniest inkling to write, or just a reader who loves fiction and is curious about writing, pick up this book.

Lisa Mangum is a fiction writer herself but also works in the publishing world. She has so much to teach and so many stories. The way she has this book laid out is fantastic. It draws you in, helps her get her tips and stories across in a masterful way. The story time sections were my favorite. This is where Mangum is able to really connect with readers and help goals seem achievable. Whether it was a story about herself, or her interactions with an other author, I was drawn in and found so much insight.

Can a book be cool? I think so. This book is so cool. I seriously can’t say enough good things about it. I love it. I’ve already reread sections of it. Highly recommend it.

I saw the ad for this writing book through Shadow Mountain's email list. I'm always interested in another writing book, especially since I am currently floundering in the middle of a novel revision. When I perused the table of contents, I thought, "Meh, I won't seek this one out," and relegated it to my Goodreads list of thousands. The conspiracy theorists are right because less than a week later it appeared on my library app recommendations. One click later and I was glued to the page, taking notes every few paragraphs. Every point seemed to spark possibilities in my brain and after each reading session I would scurry to my work in progress to iron out the plot wrinkles. So concise. So easy to absorb. Everything a good editor should be. I know how I'm spending my birthday gift card. In addition there's a dummy's guide to punctuation and a couple of chapters to encourage even the most beaten down would-be author who's languishing on submission. The perfect book at the perfect time. Try it.

I approached this book hoping to find guidance and tips to improve my general writing skills. However, I quickly realized that the content is primarily focused on the process of writing and publishing a book. While that's certainly valuable for aspiring authors looking to go through the entire publishing process, it wasn't aligned with what I was seeking.

For someone like me, who isn’t looking to write a book but simply improve their craft, the material didn’t provide the practical advice I had hoped for. That said, I can see how this book could be an excellent resource for those who are ready to take the leap toward authorship. It offers structured insights and strategies for navigating the often daunting path of writing, editing, and publishing.

Unfortunately, it just wasn't the right fit for my needs. If your goal is to write and publish a book, then Write Fearless, Edit Smart. Get Published. could definitely be the guide you're looking for.

This book is fabulous! I would love to go to an in person class taught by Lisa Mangum and to just sit and learn and ask all the questions. But until that is able to happen, then I will be content reading this book full of the knowledge she has learned and gained through many years of experience. I'm so grateful for those who are knowledgable in different fields, when they decide to share and want to help others!

I loved the personal touches added throughout as well. I'm an avid reader, but I also do some freelance editing and this book was very helpful in that regard. I will definitely be referencing it many times to come. And not only is it a great resource for editing but for writing as well! Definitely a go-to book for both writers, aspiring writers, and editors!

This is the book you'll want on your desk as a go to if you have questions about some of the basics of writing. I enjoyed getting some background on the author's past and qualifications on this topic.

No one writer has the same weaknesses or strengths and this one addresses so many situations that we face. I loved how there are examples showing not just telling me the rules of puncuation. As everyone knows commas can be especially pesky depending on how they are used. Though this for fiction writers I don't think it needs be limited, but would be a handy guide to anyone who writes in any manner.

Yesterday I finished reading WRITE FEARLESS, EDIT SMART, GET PUBLISHED by my friend Lisa Mangum. Many of you have never heard of her. She has nearly 30 years in publishing and not only understands what make a great story AND how to get that information to writers in a way that makes it very usable. From Mr. Potato Head to triangles to Supernatural, Lisa happily shares her knowledge and becomes your cheerleader even if you aren't publishing with her employer.

I have the honor of attending a writing retreat with Lisa once or twice a year. I've met 1:1 to talk about my work. I've sat in her classes. And now, you can get her terrific advice in her new book. One of the BEST books on writing that I've read.

Lisa Mangum has written a valuable guide for writers at all stages of development. With a wealth of experience in editing and a published author, Mangum provides actionable advice on everything from creating compelling characters and tightening plots to demystifying the editing process. One of the techniques she suggested which I found useful was "increasing conflict by triangulating character relationships." She used an example from Star Wars and then one from her novel to illustrate how to implement her advice.

The author uses practical tips, personal anecdotes, and inspiring insights about the writing universe. I consider this book a must-read for anyone serious about writing and publishing their work.

This is not the type of book I normally read. Honestly, sometimes nonfiction is hard for me. But this book is so good! It kept me wanting to read more from the very beginning.

I love the way Lisa Mangum includes stories from her own publishing life in this one. It feels like you're sitting down one on one with her and she's giving you answers to all of your questions about writing, editing and publishing. I love that so much!

I love that there are sections for each different topic. So Write Fearless, Edit Smart, and Get Published are all discussed during the book. And each section has a story from the author.

This book is one you should definitely read if you're wanting to write a book!

I’m someone who wants a career as an author. However, I’ve felt discouraged and like I can’t do this. That I would be another cringe book to laugh at like Coleen Hoover. Then, I read this book. Sure, yeah it’s about the writing process and how to improve, but it’s also about not giving up on your dream despite that fear and imposter syndrome. This book is an absolute inspiration to me! Not only have I stopped holding myself back, I’ve been working harder on my novel, AND I’ve found that spark again. The one I first had when all I was doing was sharing my stories with a few friends. I find inspiration everywhere again and it makes me want to be a better writer. Genuinely so glad I read this book! 🖤

Fascinating and helpful guide.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to write and wants to write better. I also recommend it to those who don’t write but love to read and want to understand more about the process. What a great resource. It's a broad overview of writing, editing, and querying/pitching with very practical tips and real-life examples and stories that tie in. Lisa doesn't get too deep into any one topic but presents a list of additional resources for anyone who wants to dive deeper. It's easy to read and helps you to focus on the most important things, so you don't feel overwhelmed with information. Grateful for Lisa sharing her years of experience with us all through this book.
