Hillary: Retribution

Rate this book
After sustaining years of sexual abuse by the father she had once loved and trusted, Hillary Greyson finally confides in her mother, only to be called a liar. Just when all seems hopeless and Hillary has no one to turn to, she discovers an ally, a voice within her that promises to make everything all better. Relying on her one and only friend--the voice of reason, Hillary puts an end to the sexual abuse and those she deemed blameworthy for her suffering. Fueled by rage, Hillary lashes out against everyone who hurt her until she is apprehended in the woods. For months, Hillary is left alone in an empty room, tied naked to a bed in the home of a man claiming to be her doctor...a man who says that she is there for her own good. Hillary finds a way to escape and discovers that she has been delivered to the doctor by a military man, Lieutenant Alan Langford, for the sole purpose of being used as a test subject in an unauthorized and unethical biomedical research experiment. Hillary knows there’s just one thing left to do. With the voice of reason now silent, she has found her own voice, along with the strength and resolve to find this man—-this military lieutenant who prolonged her suffering—-and make him pay. Hillary just wants revenge….

Wow! A very nice wrap up to this trilogy!

The last book in the trilogy does a very good job of not only wrapping up loose ends, but bringing Hillary's revenge crusade to a shocking end!

A small backstory:

Everyone thinks Hillary is dead when in fact she is very much alive and she has it in her mind that she is going to take revenge on everyone that had anything to do with her being tortured from the past, but what she doesn't know is she ends up meeting an old woman (Miss Billie) that feels sorry for her and wants to show her the good side of life through acts of kindness.

Hillary doesn't know quite what to make of this woman, but she decides that she will use Miss Billie as an advantage and might kill her off in the end once she serves no purpose, but things do not always go as planned and in this case Hillary sort of becomes attached to Miss Billie as she still tries to pursue her revenge goals.

Thoughts:

The whole story was completely different than the other two books as there was more of a "softer" tone within the story when the character, Miss Billie was introduced into the storyline. I didn't see much of the crazy stuff I have seen in the other two books and though the story was toned down more, it still kept my interest.

There are other characters that were involved in the storyline that contribute to Hillary wanting to go on her revenge streak, but no spoilers here as you will just have to read the book to find out more about them and what plans they have to see Hillary dead.

The last half of the book took off like a rocket, but what really was a shocker was near the end of the book as author, Angel Gelique threw a major twist into the storyline which sent this book ratcheting up into high gear as I was flying through the story wanting to see what would happen next!

The "major twist" was so unexpected that I was flipping through the pages at lightning speed to see what road the author was taking me down! I truly was not ready for the "twisted reveal" and after having read this unexpected revelation it made perfect sense of why the first two books were loaded with the violence from this young girl! Giving this book five "twisted" stars!

I have been on a Hillary reading marathon! Holy mother of pearl, is this trilogy intense, insanely dark and nightmarish in quality. Angel Gelique went above and beyond with, her five star villain. She's monstrous, the truest definition of evil.
 photo Hillary 01.jpg
There are no redeeming qualities or hint of mercy or humanity. Her soul is blacker than tar, Hillary is the freak you'd love to hate, not silently cheer for! Any empathy I might have had flew out the widow a long...long time ago. So I'm glad the demon she bitch got her dues. If you want an amazing dark read, one that will gross you out, fill you with disgust but leave you glued to the pages, then this is for you.
 photo Hillary 2.jpg
But keep in mind, this isn't for the feint of heart or those with triggers. Highly recommended to all dark read lovers, who don't care about HEA's or romance but loves incredible story telling and complicated plot lines. Accept now the out come may not be what you want! Enjoy...enjoy!

WOW, Angel you sure can write!

To say I was surprised by the turn of events this book ended up taking, is an understatement.

I agree with Jahy, more on Jake would be great ( she totally didn't put me up to it, Angel)

I loved this series with all it darkness.

A proper review to come later!

2 Total decepción STARS

SPOILERT ALERT

Hillary: Retribution or Hillary 3marks the end of a very bravely written trilogy. It takes damn near every idea and taboo subject and blasts it right past your eyeballs and into your brain like a literary injection from hell.

So, first I have a few comments about Hillary Greyson herself, as a character. Hillary is a deceptively complex character created by Angel Gelique’s dark, dark, DARK imagination. And that is a lot of the appeal. If you look at Hillary a certain way, she’s a tragic figure. She’s been created in a horrific way that no one should ever have to endure. Retribution helps us delve further into what seems like part survival mechanism, part transformation into a monster, and part just plain evil. The violence she commits starts out being compartmentalized or used as a tool. There are some who actually deserve retribution, which makes Hillary’s motivations richer and thoughtful. And all the while, as this one developed, you wonder if the chance encounter Hillary has with a kindly old woman will be just the antidote to give Hillary some measure of redemption. All of this is overlaid onto teenage girl that one minute you feel sorry for, one minute you hate. That is some pretty masterful characterization and development, if you ask me.

What I like most about this installment is that it is not formulaic. I loved that. I confess I came into it thinking it would involve Hillary getting captured or pursued and she needs to use her raw wits, determination, and absolute willingness (and sometimes joyfully willing) to use shocking violence to get what she wants or needs. There is some of that, but that is not the direction this story takes. It introduces some parallel storylines, such as Jake and his own descent into a personal hell. You will get many good passages and ideas that detail the descent into madness.

The characterizations are well done and convincing. This book goes back to a scene where Angel Gelique is also very good at conveying the sensation of fear, such as

As with all of Angel Gelique’s work, you’ll want to go in with full knowledge that it’s extreme horror and know that it has a lot of dark, dark stuff in it. That being said, of the three, this had the least of that and, candidly, you could make the argument it lacks the sort of violence that made the first two Hillary books what they are. But at the end of the day, you’ve got a serial killer as a protagonist and when Hillary feels the need for a snack, she ain’t reaching for the potato chips, I can tell you that.

Oh, and toward the end there is a twist in a MILLION YEARS I would never have seen coming. It made me think about the events of the whole series. I think you’ll like it too, if you’ve read the first two books.

If you haven't read this series or if you're planning on reading it, you need to know

description

***This review contains spoilers from this point on!***
If you haven't read books one or two you may want want to stop reading.
**************************************************************

This book picks up right where book one left off. Here's a quick character update:

Dr. Jake Bently is no longer a "man" but has become a shell of his former self.
description

Patty has no idea how to mend her marriage and faces possible jail time.

Hillary is still a crazy, psycho killing machine. In book one I kept thinking
description
but in Book three readers are treated to a different "softer", yet still scary side of Hillary.

Hillary meets Miss Billie, a kindly old black lady, who befriends her and wants to help her. She sees something dark inside of Hillary and she wants to help her get rid of it. Hillary makes a plan and decides to use Miss Billie to gain revenge on the man she believes is responsible for her imprisonment and torture at the hands of the doctors in Book one.

Many characters in this book were seeking retribution, in one way or another they all had an agenda. There was much less gore and bloodshed in this book compared to the previous two in the series. Even though I didn't read book two I was provided with a vivid description of what it entailed and I'm sure I would not have been able to handle it.

This is a genre I've hardly explored and usually shy away from, but I found myself really enjoying this book. I was guessing right up to the very end, and the author wrapped it all up with a very satisfying conclusion.

I must applaud the talents of Angel Gelique for writing a series so addictive that a scaredy cat like myself was sucked into it.

Wow ! One of the best trilogy I've ever read if not the best. My favorite by far was the second book, the first one being more of a thriller and becoming more and more brutal, but the second book is absolutely savage! The third one was great I was very interested in knowing how it ended. But the only reason I didn't give 5 stars was the ending, that possession story at the end, I was almost angry I just loved that story, very down to earth at 99% and then this... I just didn't know why it ended that way. There's no way Miss Billy would become a monster like this. Unless a surnatural plot twist. Overall amazing story, amazing writing, I'm a big fan of Angel Gelique.

How much can you cram into such a sort life?

When there are so many people to blame, where does the blame begin?

Wow this series had me on a roller-coaster ride. When I first read the blurb on book one I thought the book was gonna be something else, boy was I wrong. This series turned into so much more and any review I could write would never do it justice.
I found myself having different opinions of Hilary throughout the book (series) and even went as far as thinking some of the things she did were justified (I know bad right?).

Book 3 was an awesome round up of the story and tied all the pieces together in a neat little package, although there are a few things I'm left wondering like what became of Jake and the outcome of Miss Billie (book 4? *grin*).

Angel Gelique is a fantastic writer with a major talent of taking you into her world and making you question your own morals and judgements she is also one sick puppy and can map out the gore scenes to make you feel like your there and once you dive in you'll never forget her characters (you would'nt dare).

So if you love horror and can handle the gore I implore you to come on in.

This book... by itself.. was just ok..

It was as if.. this one book tried to add 'plot' to the entire series.. and it sort of fizzled

It didn't have what we all wanted it to have. and that was a bummer... it all happened 'to quick'

the first two books.. were pure psychological abuse/dark while this book was more demonic focused.. and eh... just not for me.. This is why traditional horror tends to bore me..

Overall though, The entire series was just awesome. Well done.. VERY VERY different.. and that means the world to me..

This one absolutely threw me for a loop. Was not expecting this ending at all, and that's a good thing. I like when a book is unpredictable, keeps me hooked.
I don't know what I could possibly say about this series that I haven't already said in my other two reviews.
So I'll go with this...
If your looking for something sadistic, twisted and gory, this one's for you. If your looking to be mind@#%, this one's for you. Again, not for the faint at heart or for those with queasy stomachs, you will feel it all and then some with this series.
I look forward to other works by this author, for she is AWESOME!

I found the conclusion to Hillary's story riveting!
I was engrossed in the story unfolding before me and in the changes Hillary and Jake were undergoing.
I equally enjoyed all the new characters and their back stories. Each one so well written that I was able to relate to them immediately.
I felt each & every emotion the characters were feeling because they were genuine.

In my humble opinion, Hillary: Retribution and Angel Gelique are magnificent!!

5 Satisfyingly vile stars! ; )

Retribution is the conclusion to the #HillaryTrilogy, and could have been the best story of all three.
The first one is twisted & sick. Nice.
The second one is a prequel, also twisted and sick - but with more meat. Very good. BUT - even gore-gals have limits, and mine is in the second book. I could have done without the details re: Hillary's little brother. That's just one girls opinion - don't let it influence your 'to read or not to read' decision. Minus that - it's my fav in the #HillaryTrilogy.
Hillary: Retribution brought more depth to the entire story, and I really loved it - until the end. I'm not a writer, or a professional anything, so I hate saying things like 'you can see how the author's style has grown as the trilogy progressed', but... yeah... that.
THEN... the ending...

description

It's like my rants on Stephen King.

I might have been less angry with an "...and then she woke up" conclusion.

So... all in all... I'm happy I found Angel Gelique, (LOVE the name btw), and that I've started reading her books. (No hard feelings on this review, K?)
I've got Mother qued up on the Kindle for when I'm ready.

This book has to be read in order to have closure on the other 2. Actually, this could be a stand-alone. most of it is recapping good old Hillary's escapades and "fun" times without as much gore and description.

The end was the end, but the end goes on. Sort of bummed about the supernatural element out of the blue, the whole "Mother Abigail" with a twist, the quickly wrapped up suicide, and what the fuck happened to vagina boy?

So, now after reading all three of these messed up books, I need to cleanse my mental palate. Seriously. I am going to read Pippi Longstocking or Velveteen Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh, anything.

Kudos Ms Angel, I thought I could not be disturbed anymore, and yet I was. Just sorta kinda wished you could have not thrown the demon stuff in. Evil in the world is evil in the world and sickness is a resultant of generations of people being fucked up, albeit in different levels. Every once in awhile, the sore will fester and society pukes a Dahmer, a Albert Fish, A Dennis Rader, a Bundy, A Son of Sam, a Hitler, from its infected, gangrenous womb. The primordial ooze of fuked-up-ness that is the human race breeds evil all on its own without the need for demons. What's more frightening than evil for no other reason than the fact that it was bred from nature and nurture. It's easier to pin the cause on an external sentient being that is the heart of malevolence rather than look at a society that breeds creatures capable of the atrocities we see every day.

So what happened to Jake is my big question???
So after reading book 1 & 2 I was ready for more..... Well you get answers and meet so many new people along the way, but book 3 was like reading a fairy princess book after what went on in the other books. But the ending for Eliza was kidda weird?! Jake just, well, I don't know really? His family? The outcome to the last scene in the motel?
Just some open ended little things that kinda feel apart but otherwise a good series.

***I received a free copy from Paranormal and Horror Lovers in exchange for a review***

I enjoyed this book. The opening held my interest right away and had me sitting on the edge of my seat. My mind raced with questions. Was Hillary the bad guy? Did Dr. Jake hurt her?

Hillary was considered dead by the public. They thought she was killed while resisting arrest in the woods. However, Dr. Morrison and Dr. Jake held her captive for military testing. When she escaped, Dr. Jake was afraid she would kill and torture his family.

My favorite lines: 1) The blame would be passed down the ranks. Shit always rolled downhill. 2) There they were…two ghosts, together again. 3) “So it’s true then,” she said angrily. “Your whore is on her way over.” 4) But he knew the truth. And the truth would set him free…

There was some headhopping and it almost seemed like every other word was an adverb. But, there was nothing distracting about the story. I will admit–I was a little confused by the ending. Did Hillary torture those people? Was she responsible? Or something else? This was the last book of the series. Maybe the first ones explained more.

Overall, this story had a great plot. I liked that Hillary met Miss Billie because she needed an ally to help escape/hide (Miss Billie had her suspicions but helped anyway). Dr. Jake and Detective Eliza were on the hunt for Hillary–both for different motives. I loved the tension and conflict in the story.

I RECOMMEND this book to read.

You know what, when Hillary met Miss Billie i had a feeling this book would be the best horror book i've ever read. i expected Hillary would be cured by Miss Billie and she would be back to the innocent-Hillary again and they lived happily ever after.

But I know something's wrong, really really wrong when Miss Billie had blood all over her hands.

and the worst part i couldn't resist was that Hillary was dead and Eliza killed herself and Miss Billie turned into a monster.

I wanted to give this book 5 stars but after reading the ending, and especially the epilogue it's as if the writer really ruined her masterpiece. The ending could have been better, really.

I.JUST.HATE.THE.ENDING. and the epilogue. that's it.

This was such an amazing finale to two great books. I couldn't think of a better ending to this story than the one the author chose to write. For those of you who are familiar with the Hillary books, you are in for one wild ride. While reading these three books, I experienced such a wide range of emotions, from feelings of compassion to actually closing the book and putting it down thinking I couldn't read anymore ( because of gruesomeness ), then going back to it twenty minutes later because I had to find out what was going to happen! This final book ties everything up for you in a neat little package. For those of you who have never read these books, I consider you guys very lucky to be able to read them back to back without having to wait for the next release date. I find myself unable to review just this final book without giving away one of the many surprises, twist and turns, and answers to many unanswered questions about Hillary. Must read for all who love true horror. Keep writing Ms. Gelique I anxiously await your next book!

Wow, this series is one of the few that was wrapped up perfectly by the author in three books while still keeping the reader on the edge of their seat the entire time. This final book in the series left me constantly wondering if and when Miss Billie would meet a gruesome fate like several other previous victims of Hillary's wrath.

Angel does an amazing job of character development so you can't help but empathize with the emotional turmoil each individual is experiencing throughout the story. It is very hard to say much about this book without giving away the plot, but what I will say is that this last book in particular will show Hillary in a much different light, where you will finally understand the true reality which drives her thoughts and actions. I kind of suspected it all along, which made it even creepier as the storyline revealed itself ;)

I won this book from the recent giveaway and loved it. I haven't
read the first 2 in the trilogy but was able to follow the Hillary's story just fine. The moment I opened it up I couldn't think of anything else until I was done and even still, I think about the story often. I will be ordering the other books soon so I can read Hillary's story from the beginning.

I enjoyed the last part of this extremely hard trilogy. It was as hard hitting as the previous books, and had all the damaged people back. Poor Jake. What a mess he and his family were left in. And nothing gets better for anyone. The chase for Hilary is on. Addictive reading!

This amazingly horrific series should not have ended that way! I see many loved it but I wish it had stayed on the path it was on from the start. I did still like it....just minus the last 15 pages.
