About the author

Rafael Sabatini (1875 - 1950) was an Italian/British writer of novels of romance and adventure. At a young age, Rafael was exposed to many languages. By the time he was seventeen, he was the master of five languages. He quickly added a sixth language - English - to his linguistic collection. After a brief stint in the business world, Sabatini went to work as a writer. He wrote short stories in the 1890s, and his first novel came out in 1902. Sabatini was a prolific writer; he produced a new book approximately every year. He consciously chose to write in his adopted language, because, he said, "all the best stories are written in English. " In all, he produced thirty one novels, eight short story collections, six nonfiction books, numerous uncollected short stories, and a play. He is best known for his world-wide bestsellers: The Sea Hawk (1915), Scaramouche (1921), Captain Blood (1922) and Bellarion the Fortunate (1926). Other famous works by Sabatini are The Lion's Skin (1911), The Strolling Saint (1913) and The Snare (1917).

বইটা মোটামুটি ভালোই লাগলো, কিন্তু আরেকটু বড় পরিসরে হলে আরো ভালো লাগতো, একটু অতৃপ্তি থেকে গেল। আর যেখানে শাহেদ জামান ভাইয়ের অনুবাদ, সেখানে অনুবাদ নিয়ে কোন কথা হবেনা। বরাবরের মতই দুর্দান্ত।♥️

শাহেদ জামান সাহেবের অনুবাদ আগে পড়িনি, এই প্রথম পড়লাম। সাম্প্রতিক কিছু অখাদ্য অনুবাদ পড়ার পর এই বইটা পড়ে মনে হলো, নাহ, সেবা আগের মতোই আছে!
র‍্যাফায়েল স্যাবাটিনির বই আমার খুব ভালো লাগে নি কখনোই, দ্য ব্ল্যাক সোয়ান বইটা খুব ভালো লেগেছিলো। এই বইটার কাহিনীও মোটামুটি রকমের। তবে অনুবাদ খুব ঝরঝরে। তাই এক বসায় শেষ করে ফেলেছি।
রুথ মেয়েটারে দুটা থাপ্পড় দিতে পারলে ভালো লাগতো। অ্যান্থনিটাও বেশি নাটুকে, ফাজিল একটা। -_-

This is how the internal thinking and dialogue goes between Master Wilding and his wife. We get dropped into this over-the-top romance after all the build up which usually goes into carrying the reader along with the characters' feelings and perhaps that is why I found a lot of it tiring.

I also didn't care much about the Monmouth rebellion, except for being interested in the historical prequel to why Sabatini's Captain Blood had rebels being punished by the government for a failed rebellion. Yes, they are both halves of the same historical event.

I did love Wilding's friend Trenchant who was just wonderful in his cynicism, quick thinking, and acting abilities. However, it wasn't enough to overcome my other problems in reading the book. I'm not sorry I read it but I can't imagine reading it again.

গল্পের পটভূমি সপ্তদশ শতকের ইংল্যাণ্ড। সে সময়ে ইংল্যাণ্ডের রাজনৈতিক পরিস্থিতি খুব একটা ভালো ছিলো না। পরপর কয়েকটি গৃহযুদ্ধ, রাজা প্রথম চার্লসের মৃত্যু, দ্বিতীয় চার্লসের নির্বাসন প্রভৃত মিলিয়ে একটি গোঁজামিল অবস্থা। এই গল্পের পটভূমি মূলত ক্যাথলিক রাজা দ্বিতীয় চার্লসের বিরুদ্ধে প্রটেস্ট্যাণ্ট পক্ষের নেতা ডিউক অভ মনমাথের বিদ্রোহ। এমন একটা সময় যখন সবাই যুদ্ধের প্রস্তুতি নিচ্ছে। যুদ্ধ শুরু হবে যেকোনো সময়।

গল্পের নায়ক অ্যান্থনি ওয়াইল্ডিং মনমাথের সহযোগী ও সমর্থক। সুদর্শন ও সাহসী যুবক এই ওয়াইল্ডিং। কিন্তু ভালোবাসার মানুষ রুথ ওয়েস্টমাকটের কাছে সে ব্যার্থ। রুথও কি অ্যান্থনিকে ভালোবাসতো না!
বাসতো। কিন্তু সমাজে অ্যান্থনির নামে প্রচলিত কিছু গুজব ও নারী মনের সন্দেহের কারনে ধীরেধীরে অ্যান্থনির প্রতি ঘৃণা তৈরি হয় তার মনে। কিন্তু অ্যান্থনি নিপাট ভদ্রলোক। একই সাথে বীর ও সাহসীও বটে। কিন্তু ভালোবাসা কি জোর করে পাওয়া যায়? রুথের ভাই রিচার্ডের সাথে ডুয়েল লড়তে গিয়েও রুথের অনুরোধে ডুয়েল থেকে সরে আসে অ্যান্থনি। আর যাদের ডুয়েল সম্পর্কে ধারনা আছে তারা নিশ্চয়ই জানেন যে, ডুয়েলে না গিয়ে হার মানা কতটা অসম্মানের কাজ ছিলো সেই সমাজে। এদিকে আবার আছে রুথের বর্তমান পাণিপ্রার্থী স্যার রোনাল্ড ব্লেক। যেহেতু ব্লেক ও রুথের মধ্যে একমাত্র বাধা অ্যান্থনি, সেহেতু সব সময় অ্যান্থনি কে সরিয়া দেওয়ার একেকটা ফন্দি আটতে থাকে ব্লেক।
অ্যান্থনি-রুথ-ব্লেক থাকুক, ওদিকে বেজে উঠছে যুদ্ধের দামামা। কে জিতবে?
অ্যান্থনির একদিকে ভালোবাসা অপরদিকে দায়িত্ববোধ। রুথের একদিকে ভালোবাসা অপরদিকে দোটানা। এক যুদ্ধের মধ্যে আরেক যুদ্ধ চলছে অ্যান্থনি, রুথ আর ব্লেকের মধ্যে।

লেখকের অনেক বইয়ের অনুবাদ থাকলেও লেখক সম্পর্কে কোনো তথ্য পেলাম না অনলাইনে। আর যদি অনুবাদকের কথা বলতে হয় তাহলে বলবো সেবার অনুবাদ নতুন করে কিছু বলার নাই। তাছাড়া শাহেদ জামানের অনুবাদের অনেক প্রশংসা শুনেছি। এবারই প্রথম পড়লাম। সেবা থেকে এটা ওনার প্রথম অনুবাদ সম্ভবতঃ। সব মিলিয়ে প্যাকেজটা দারুন!

In the days just before England’s Monmouth Rebellion, Anthony Wilding takes advantage of an insult to force a marriage with the woman he loves. Wilding regrets his rash action after his commitment to the Duke of Monmouth separates him from his new bride, but the botched military campaign threatens to make the new Mistress Wilding a widow — unless a rival suitor manages it first.

There was a good amount of action and humor, along with a running theme of schemes that backfire against their plotters. The Monmouth Rebellion setting gave things a great sense of tension, and it seemed well-researched. The historical details were occasionally a bit of a drag on the pace during the middle third of the story. Still, it was great to watch the main characters progress from personal intrigues to small acts of defiance to full-on rebellion.

Sabatini stories aren’t subtle. His leading men are bold and roguish, but they’re magnetic despite their mistakes. It’s true that his women are thinly written. It’s hard for any of the side characters to match the larger than life protagonists, though. And at least the heroine acted with far more spirit (and far more understandable reasons) than that annoying brat that I kept hoping The Sea-Hawk would maroon somewhere.

The ending, with Wilding finally able to turn his attention to personal matters while his best friend dealt with Wilding’s one final obstacle, was perfect.

সপ্তদশ শতকের ইংল্যান্ড। সিংহাসনে রাজা দ্বিতীয় চার্লস। ক্যাথলিক রাজার একজন শক্ত প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী রয়েছে। রাজার ভাই ( অবৈধ) প্রটেস্ট্যান্টদের নেতা ডিউক অব মনমাথ নিজেও সিংহাসনের দাবিদার। দুসরা চার্লসের বিরুদ্ধে বিদ্রোহের অপরাধে ডিউক মনমাথ হল্যান্ডে নির্বাসিত। সেখানে বসেই চেষ্টা করছেন নিজের সমর্থকগোষ্ঠী বাড়াতে। অপরদিকে, ডিউকের কোনো অনুসারীর খোঁজ পেলেই তাকে রাজদ্রোহিতার দায়ে দেওয়া হচ্ছে কঠোর সাজা। এমন একটি প্রতিকূল রাজনৈতিক আবহে ত্রিকোণ প্রেম, প্রতিহিংসা এবং নানা নাটকীয় ঘটনায় মোড়া রাফায়েল সাবাতিনির চমৎকার উপন্যাস 'মিস্ট্রেস ওয়াইল্ডিং'। শাহেদ জামান বেশ ভালো রূপান্তর করেছেন।

ডিউক মনমাথের অনুসারী সাহসী এবং সুদর্শন যুবক ওয়াইল্ডিং। সে রুথ ওয়েস্টমাকেটকে ভীষণ ভালোবাসে। কিন্তু রুথ বারবার প্রত্যাখান করেছে ওয়াইল্ডিংকে। এই প্রত্যাখানের পেছনে রুথের ভাই রিচার্ডেরও ভূমিকা আছে। সে কখনোই চায় না রুথের সাথে ওয়াইল্ডিংয়ের বিয়ে হোক। কেননা তাতে রুথের বিশাল সম্পত্তির মালিক হবে ওয়াইল্ডিং। উল্লেখ্য, সপ্তদশ শতকের আইন অনুযায়ী স্ত্রীর সকল সম্পদের সত্ত্বাধিকারী হতো স্বামী। ওয়াইল্ডিং সবকিছু পেয়ে গেলে রিচার্ডকে পথে বসতে হবে। তাই রুথের স্বামী হিসেবে এমন কাউকে পছন্দ রিচার্ডের যে সম্পত্তির ভাগ মাতাল রিচার্ডকেও দেবে।

স্যার ব্লেক নামের আরেক যুবক মিস রুথের প্রণয়াকাঙ্ক্ষি। ব্লেক একসময় ধনবান ছিল। নিজের স্বভাবের দরুন ঋণগ্রস্ত হয়ে সে পালিয়ে এ��েছে। রিচার্ড এবং ব্লেকের সন্ধি হলো। দু'জনই পথের কাঁটা ভাবে ওয়াইল্ডিংকে।

মদের সাধক রিচার্ড মাতাল হয়ে এক পার্টিতে ওয়াইল্ডিংকে আচ্��ামতো অপমান করলো। সে ভেবেছিল রুথের ভাই বলে ওয়াইল্ডিং তাকে কিচ্ছুটি বলতে সাহস পাবে না। ওয়াইল্ডিংয়ের মাথায় চলছিল ভিন্ন কিছু। সে রিচার্ডকে ডুয়েল লড়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে বাধ্য করলো। ডুয়েল লড়বার কথা হতেই হুঁশ ফিরে এলো রিচার্ডের। কেননা তার মতো আনাড়ি ওয়াইল্ডিংয়ের মতো দক্ষ তলোয়ারবাজের ডুয়েল লড়া মানে মৃত্যু!

রুথ তার ভাই রিচার্ডকে খুব স্নেহ করে। ডুয়েলে রিচার্ড মারা যাবে এটা সে কোনোভাবেই মানতে পারছিল না। তাই বাধ্য হয়ে ভাইয়ের প্রাণভিক্ষা চাইতে ওয়াইল্ডিংয়ের বাড়িতে গেল রুথ। ভালোবাসায় অন্ধ ওয়াইল্ডিং রাজি হলো রিচার্ডকে ক্ষমা করতে। বিনিময়ে রুথকে বিয়ে করতে হবে ওয়াইল্ডিংকে।

ওয়াইল্ডিংয়ের সাথে রুথের বিয়ে সইতে পারার মতো মানসিক অবস্থা ব্লেক কিংবা রিচার্ড কারোই ছিল না। ধুরন্ধর ব্লেক, রিচার্ডকে নিয়ে পরিকল্পনা করলো ওয়াইল্ডিংকে শেষ করে দেওয়ার। সরাসরি তা অসম্ভব। উপায় হবে ভিন্ন। এদিকে ডিউক মনমাথ হঠাৎ হল্যান্ড থেকে ফেরার সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন। গোপন চিঠি পাঠালেন ওয়াইল্ডিংয়ের কাছে। কিন্তু সেই চিঠি পড়ে গেল ব্লেক এবং রিচার্ডের হাতে।

এই চিঠি পুরো কাহিনিকে বদলে দিল। ওলট-পালট হয়ে গেল ওয়াইল্ডিংয়ের জীবন। অন্যদিকে, নির্বোধ ডিউক তার ততোধিক নির্বোধ পরামর্শক লড গ্রে'র পরামর্শ শুনে একেরপর এক ভুল করতে লাগলেন। ডিউকের এই বিদ্রোহের সাথে জড়িয়ে গেল রিচার্ড, ব্লেক, রুথ এবং আ্যন্টনি ওয়াইল্ডিং।

সাবাতিনির লেখায় একটা জাদু থাকে। টানটান উত্তেজনা এবং টুইস্ট তাঁর রচনার অন্যতম বৈশিষ্ট্য। এই টুইস্ট নিয়ে দু'চার কথা বলার আছে। বাংলা সিনেমায় কাহিনির জোড়াতালি দিতে যেমন অলৌকিক কিছু ঘটনা ঘটে, তেমনি সাবাতিনির বইতে যুক্তির বাইরে কিছু টুইস্টের সন্ধান পাওয়া যায়। এই টুইস্ট লেখাকে এক্সসাইটিং করে বটে তবে তার যৌক্তিকতা নিয়ে বরাবরই প্রশ্ন তোলা যায়।

মোটামুটি সুন্দর প্লট, চলনসই অনুবাদ 'মিস্ট্রেস ওয়াইল্ডিং'-কে সুখপাঠ্য গ্রন্থে পরিণত করেছে। বেশি আশা না রেখে সময়কে উপভোগ করতে চাইলে অবশ্যই বইটি পড়তে পারেন।

Mistress Wilding by Rafael Sabatini is the story of Ruth Westmacott and Anthony Wilding. Wilding is a partisan of the rebellious Duke of Monmouth in 1680s England. Ruth is his reluctant lady-love, whom he kind of tricks into marrying. Other characters include:

Richard, Ruth’s cowardly brother.
Sir Rowland Drake, gambler and opportunist who wants to marry Ruth.
Nick Trenchard, Wilding’s stalwart friend.
Diana, Ruth’s cousin and Wilding supporter, who wants to marry Sir Rowland.

This romance is played against a backdrop of the stratagems and battles between the Catholic King James II and his illegitimate nephew, the Protestant Duke of Monmouth. As such, it illuminates a little corner of history that doesn’t get much play today.

Sabatini took the genre of historical fiction and filled it in with shades of gray. His heroes (while clearly heroes) don’t always behave unselfishly. His villains often have mixed motivations. The Duke of Monmouth is neither a pristine Protestant champion nor a black-hearted villain rebelling against the king.

He represents a step up from older historical fiction with its clear morals and a step towards a modern, cynical style. (An exception relates to his heroines, who are usually as pure as anything Dickens wrote).

Still, I did not find Mistress Wilding as interesting as other Sabatini novels. The late 17th century is not an era I find especially fascinating. The story and characters were fine, but nothing special.

সুইট একটা বই।
প্রিয় লেখক, প্রিয় অনুবাদক, প্রিয় প্রকাশনী... এই তিনের যখন সমন্বয় হয় নিজেকে ধরে রাখার কোন উপায় থাকে কি না জানি না। যাই হোক, গল্পের পটভুমি সপ্তদশ শতকের ইংল্যান্ড। কাহিনীও যে খুব প্যাঁচালো তাও না আবার খুব যে সহজ সরল তাও না। গল্পের নায়ক এ্যন্থনি ওয়াইল্ডিং। সচরাচর নায়ক যেমন হয় ঠিক তেমনি নায়কোচিত চেহারা প্লাস চরিত্র। সবই ঠিকঠাক কিন্তু বেচারার মনে শান্তি নাই। কেন? কারন সে যাকে পছন্দ করে সেই মেয়ের কান অন্যান্যরা রীতিমতো তার বিরুদ্ধে বিষিয়ে রেখেছে। এখন নিশ্চয়ই সবার পেটে প্রশ্ন গিজগিজ করছে, বইয়ের নাম তবে মিস্টার ওয়াইল্ডিং না হয়ে মিস্ট্রেস ওয়াইল্ডিং হল কেন? রাফা কি তবে ভুল করলেন?

মোটেও না, সে প্রশ্নের উত্তর পাবার জন্য পড়ে ফেলতে হবে বইটা। রাফায়েলের বই সাধারনট হ্যাপি এন্ডিং থাকে। আর থাকে চরম হাস্যরস। এই বইটাও ঠিক এরকমই । আর অনুবাদের মান নিয়ে কিছু বললাম না। শাহেদ জামান নিজেকে ছাড়িয়ে যাচ্ছেন প্রতিনিয়ত।

Anthony Wilding is not one of Sabatini's most sympathetic characters, but I like that a lot of his troubles are rooted in his biggest moment of personal weakness. I ended up feeling a lot more sympathetic towards Ruth this time around, and that last thing Nick does still makes for one of my all-time favorite Sabatini endings.

This book was a short and sweet, old fashioned (with a twist) romance novel set in the time period during the Duke of Monmouth’s Protestant uprising, in England. The writing (like all Sabatini’s works) was superb with a definite emphasis on old English and a wide array of vocabulary, which I always enjoy. I would personally have enjoyed more dialogue between the lovers as opposed to the information on battles and conspiracies (Sabatini is better suited to romance dialogue and wit than to describing battle scenes) but the story overall was engaging, if not a little far fetched, most definitely entertaining. I personally liked Sabatini’s “Captain Blood” much better than this, but it was a nice little one time read.

4.5 stars. How I love Rafael Sabatini! I was apprehensive that this book, which I had only recently heard of, would not be as good a story as I expect from Sabatini. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. Another masterful creation of a cunning, calm under pressure, somewhat villainous hero. The story takes place in the 1600s with the characters immersed in the Duke of Monmouth rebellion. A quick Wikipedia search, which I had already done during my reading of Captain Blood, and you’ll understand the basics of the Rebellion to get you through the story. If you are a fan of Sabatini and his knack for historical romance, then I highly recommend.

From what I can work out, this novel also appears in other editions as 'Mistress Wilding'. Anthony Wilding takes advantage of a lady's weakness to coerce her into marrying, largely do to the antics of her cowardly brother, so behaves like a scoundrel. As the 1685 Monmouth Rebellion unfolds , a genuine romance develops, as double dealing and self serving opportunism emerge amongst the local Somerset gentry. Rafael Sabatini seems to have had no illusions about the Monmouth Rebellion . It is portrayed as being ill timed at best, and generally a foolish undertaking . Monmouth himself appears as being insipid and easily manipulated. It is no literary classic, but jolly good fun to read.

Middle shelf Sabatini: a competent, more than mildly entertaining swashbuckler set against the backdrop of the Monmouth rebellion: late seventeenth century England as perceived through the romantic filter of the early twentieth. To me, Mistress Wilding was most memorable for one of the cleverest, and most convincing, last-second-escape-from-imminent-death sequences I've encountered in fiction. I don't know if it's ever been ripped off, but it deserves to be.

While not of the same class as Scaramouche (which I liked the best) and Captain Blood, this book still kept me engrossed, and had the usual Sabatini twist at the end. Though I was annoyed at the wishy washy heroine, Sabatini's treatment of the plucky hero made up for everything. Some awareness of the Monmouth rebellion and it's aftermath, will be helpful to enjoy the book.

ঐতিহাসিক ঘটনার ওপর ভিত্তি করে বানানো উপন্যাস আমার বরাবরই ভাল লাগে। ষাথে যুক্ত হয়েছে প্রিয় লেখক রাফায়েল সাবাতিনি, আর সেবার অনুবাদ। মোটের উপর ভাল একটা বই। যদিও প্রধান চরিত্র অ্যান্থনির বেকুবি দেখে মাঝে মাঝেই খুব বিরক্ত লেগেছে 😣 তার এসব বোকামি আবার কাহিনীর জন্যই প্রয়োজন ছিল! তার চরিত্রকে আরেকটু স্ট্রং দেখিয়ে যদি একই ধরণের কাহিনী বানানো যেত, তাহলে আরো ভালো লাগত।

This was no Captain Blood, although the hero may bear some resemblance. This was an interesting historical novel, set during the ill-advised Monmouth Rebellion. Although I enjoy Sabatini's writing in general, the novel suffered from a somewhat loose plot and some unsympathetic characters. Although Anthony Wilding and his friend Nick were likable and clever characters, most of the other characters were weak and annoying, particularly the heroine Ruth, or Mistress Wilding. She was far too easily influenced by those she should not have been, primarily her useless, scheming brother. At least her jealous and self-serving cousin Diana had some backbone.

I found it somewhat ironic that Wilding is so enamored of the wishy-washy Ruth, when he becomes disillusioned with the Duke of Monmouth for some of the same character flaws. Although Ruth does display courage at times, it is often too little, too late. Furthermore, these acts of courage usually come after the urging of some other character rather than due to her own initiative.

My favorite quote: "All time is love's time, all places are love's place, and of all time and places the present ever preferable to the wise-for life is uncertain and short at best. I bring you worship, and you answer me with scorn. But I shall prevail, and you shall come to love me in very spite of your own self."

If you haven't read Sabatini, start with Captain Blood or Scaramouche, two of my favorite books. This one didn't quite measure up to those standards.

There were a few good comic scenes buried in this, but the story could have benefited from heavy editing. The main character is rather unsympathetic at the beginning, motivated by a hatred of the woman who spurned him. While many supporting characters are even more unlikeable, I could read those as deliberate satirical choices and I entertained myself by mentally casting the roles with whichever British actor I thought could best pull off the humor. (Can anyone else imagine Stephen Fry in a long wig as the sarcastic old Nick Trenchard?)

The greatest flaw with the story was that Sabatini seemed to assume that the reader would be as versed in, and as fascinated by, British history as he was. I spent a lot of time Googling details about the Monmouth Rebellion in order to sort out the fictional characters from the dozen or so historical figures who show up halfway through the book. The first five or six chapters of the story focus on a trivial argument that gets blown out of proportion. By contrast, an entire battle is later mentioned almost in passing in less than a paragraph. Sabatini takes it for granted that the reader is already acquainted with "the Bridport affair."

Two stars feels harsh, but "It was okay," is really the best I can say for the story.

Mistress Wilding isn't Rafael Sabatini's best work, but he is on comfortable turf as he returns to explore a different aspect of familiar territory, England's Monmouth Rebellion of 1685, that set in motion one of his best works, Captain Blood. In short, a man who may or may not be a good guy forces the woman he loves - but has spurned him based on gossip - to marry him in order to save her brother's life. There are the usual misunderstandings, miscommunications, and happy resolutions that mark Sabatini's work. The villains are only moderately compelling, and there are times when you want to drill some sense into the title character for her unwavering belief in her unworthy brother, but the final twists and turns make the whole adventure quite satisfying.

If you start to read the book and get lost in the medias res opening scene, stick with it. The jumble of characters will eventually make sense.
